Hello! My name is feardragon. I've been a Starcraft 2 caster and content producer for about two and a half years now and I've had the opportunity to cast for a lot of team leagues including the AHGL, the URTL, the UASL, and the CSL. I've also been able to cast some more regular tournaments like ZOTAC Cups, an IEM Singapore Qualifier, and the LaG Gaming $1000 Invitational. So when I say that I'm decently involved in the North American scene and want to see it grow, I mean it!
Breaking Out is a project designed to build the North American Starcraft 2 scene. Everyone knows the North American scene is lackluster to where it could be. Shoutcraft NA is a sparkling example of the interest in the North American SC2 scene, but due to unfortunate circumstances, the next Shoutcraft NA is in an uncertain situation. While we love what Genna and John Bane(Intricacy and TotalBiscuit) have done for the Starcraft 2 scene, I feel it is time for the rest of us to step it up while they refocus their efforts on team Axiom. So just what does this project entail?
Breaking Out is a weekly show with content 6 days a week. Each week we'll spend time getting to know more about a rising North American Starcraft 2 player. Even I know it's hard to watch two totally unknown SC2 players playing against each other when even the casters don't know anything about the players and their playstyle. Knowing about the players is what makes us care about watching Polt try to hit those three bases so he can become indestructable, or cheer on Jaedong because we knew ZvP was his weakest matchup and he overcame it through damn hard work. These stories EXIST in the North American scene, we just don't see them.
That is the purpose of Breaking Out. To show the stories that deserve to be shown.
Each week I'll be broadcasting the content, Monday-Saturday. Here's what the schedule will look like:
Monday 30-60 minute interview with the player! Tuesday We'll cast an XvZ to get a feel for their zerg matchup. Wednesday We'll cast an XvT to get a feel for their terran matchup. Thursday We'll cast an XvP to get a feel for their protoss matchup. Friday We've covered every matchup! Now let's just cast an awesome game! Saturday Time for some fun with the player. Think karoke, dancing, crazy fun.
Through 1 week, I hope that you will get a chance to learn a bit more about an individual and see their story lines. Who does this NA player practice with? Who do they consider a rival? Was that wonky build a one off, or is it their tried and true standard that makes them unique? Does this player have an arrogance about them that makes them so good, or are they as nice a person as Sheth? These are the things that make you care. The context behind the game is what gives us a reason to tune in day in and day out.
The Format
As stated, this will be content released over the course of 6 days every week. Each week will focus on a new player from a wide roster of teams including Xtraterrestrials, Clarity Gaming, LaG Gaming, Core Gaming, and more to come! Each video will be broadcasted live over on twitch at 8:30pm PST(to avoid conflicting with WCS America) and a video will be uploaded to youtube soon after. I hope you consider subscribing to the youtube or following the twitch channel so you get updates when the broadcast goes live or the video comes out!
If you were awesome and you clicked the youtube and twitch channels, you'll notice they went to my youtube and twitch channels. I want to note that as of right now, there are no advertisements being played, nor do I have any immediate intention of putting them on. For me, this is a passion project to boost the North American scene into being what I know it can be. That means I need YOU viewers to watch this, and then go check out some FANTASTIC tournaments with some of these players. Here are some places you can find them:
The UASL(Union of America Star League) Season 3 The Ascension Team League ZOTAC and GO4SC2 Cups Lots of others!
Beyond that, please post feedback or thoughts! This is a huge undertaking for me with a lot of moving pieces, so there's definitely going to be room for improvement. If you have an idea or suggestion, post it! If you think you know a player that would be a great fit for this or a team that would be interested, let them know to contact me or let me know so I can contact them! You can also tell them to shoot an e-mail to feardragon64@gmail.com !
I hope everyone will decide to tune in and support the North American scene! I believe one day North American players can and will rival their friends in Europe, but first we need to give them a reason to train hard! BE their audience and cheer loud when you see your favorite North American star Breaking Out!
Special thanks to Killkap for all the graphics involved in this project! Big thanks to everyone who has worked with me on it and given feedback as well! One last shoutout to http://www.youtube.com/DSCAccount for letting me use his music!
Id absolutely love this to work out for you! Props man, seriously well done for getting out there and trying to make a difference to the NA scene, evidently no one else (aside from the ever wonderful Bain family) even tries :/ Will be looking out for the shows
I think short episodic updates profiling these semi-pro players from NA is a great idea, it sounds fun especially if you're kinda pitting them all against each other. It's like what Redbull Training Grounds could have been if it were actually for low-mid tier players.
I'm sold on the concept, but I wonder if 6 days a week is a bit much depending on how long each show actually is. Remember, we're sorta saturated with content to watch, so while I see a lot of potential in this, you really want bang for your buck on the actual amount of time spent watching.. too much past 1 hour and it can be tough for people to get into or find time for.
either way, you have my follows etc, i'll watch. good luck
Nice concept, I really liked the GomTV made Yellow learns SC2 series as well as the Brood War Hyungjoon becomes a progamer. If you can make the show even remotely close to that good, I would be a regular watcher!
A few suggestions that you can incorporate given your resources (some of which you have already talked about)
-player bio (age, occupation, goals in life, what his parents think about him playing starcraft, his personality) -sc bio (ladder ranking, what race did he chose and why, how long has he been playing, what is his training regimen, things he needs to work on and strengths, other things he would need to become successful, who is his favorite player, what kind of style does he play, rivalries, his goal in sc2, a description of good team and his relationship within it) -some funny questions (give him words and all him what the first thing that comes into his head is, good insight into personality )
-it would be nice to follow up on the players some time later to see how they have progressed. Remember, the community wants to follow players, not just know about them.

Hey! Thanks for the reply.
I definitely agree with the "redbull training grounds" idea. I don't mean to announce things ahead of time but as per a suggestion by DJWheat when I pitched this idea to him, he actually recommended doing something like a 8 or 16 person invitational with the first 8 or 16 players I do this project with! It's definitely something I'm interested in doing, but for now I'm just making sure I get my feet off the ground!
And I 300000% agree about oversaturation right now. That's actually Why I've broken it up over 6 days. I didn't want to have one or two blocks where I'm doing this for 2 or 3 hours. Instead, this project is going to focus on short, 30ish minute segments. The interview is expected to be 20-30 minutes, each game cast is just a single game, and the fun time might be the longest at an expected 30 to 45 minutes. The goal is, a manageable amount of Starcraft on a consistent basis, with vods available for those who are busy on particular days. =]
Hope that helps! Thanks for the feedback! =D Please be sure to let me know if you think any segments are too long once the actual launch happens!

nope, that's the perfect amount of time. The kind of thing you can squeeze in easily between two tournaments if you had to. You'll have my eyes, anyhow, gl.
I don't get it... you cast three vZ and claim to have covered all matchups? When you cover a TvP for example? Anyways, I probably won't watch it because of time zone difference and such, but good luck with your event. NA lacks some regular events, imo.

edit: ah, not I get it.
Oh man that's embarassing. Thanks for the catch! Was supposed to be XvZ, XvP and XvT!
Not sure how much I'll be able to watch (got an early job and usually have to go to bed around that time) but I like the idea and I hope it works out well. With all the kind of negativity surrounding the NA scene and failed projects in general this one definitely seems like something that shouldn't be too difficult to pull off while giving some hard working players (and yourself) some good attention. Good luck!
Great idea, and a big step in the right direction. Seems like a lot of work but if this is successful, will definitely pay off! Good luck to all players involved and feardragon for organizing it, and hope this helps relatively unknown NA talent and the NA scene as a whole.

this guy doesn't get enough attention he deserves...sick player with his own sick builds
This sounds like a very cool idea and I hope it really takes off! It's great to see people doing what they can to boost the North American scene. Two players you may want to take a look at are Eternity Gaming's Kalinov and NuBrGNi. Both are relatively unknown despite being very talented. Love the concept of the show and can't wait for the first episode.
For those asking where to sign up/suggest someone for the program, e-mail "feardragon64@gmail.com" or tell that party to e-mail me! You can recommend yourself but I will ask that you be a high masters/GM player. =]

Definitely! Check your TL inbox! I'd love to talk! =D
Best of luck, this is really awesome idea, to help support the NA scene & up & comers. Boy, the NA scene surely needs any support it can get at the moment
Event is on the Team Liquid Calendar for every day of the first week! HUGE shoutout to TL for being awesome and supporting this by approving the calendar event!
As for quick update(though I don't think anyone's expressed concern), the content IS coming monday. =] I finished the interview with JowJ and will be finishing up video rendering and such for that and the casts tomorrow. Please make sure you post any feedback about the content as soon as you have it! Thanks all!
With all the negative doom and gloom posts in the community lately, its tremendous to see someone taking initiative and putting out content like this. Especially for the NA scene. Will be watching and supporting !
The first episode of the show will be airing in about 30 minutes! I hope you guys are excited! Please be sure to post feedback in the thread after you check it out! The episode itself is only about 30 minutes long. =]
Gasp! We're back on once again tonight! This time we're jumping into XT JowJ's ZvZ with an actual game! And this time, we're not overlapping with GSTL! Yay unoverlap!
Glad to see this kind of shows. This along with tournaments like shoutcraft america really helped bring out a lot of new names that I just haven't heard about before. A lot of really good upcoming players out there that you just don't know about. Really like the format also with having it spread over an entire weak. I often don't feel i have time to watch an entire 1-2hour show bc i know I will have to interupt it in the middle and start later so having these 20-30 min vods is really nice where i can just check them out when i got some time.
Thanks for the input! The first interview ended up running a bit over what I wanted it to(about 35 minutes). I'll be sure to try and keep content shorter in general. You definitely hit the nail on the head for part of my idea with this. There's certainly a LOT of content out there. This was made to be consistent, easy to consume content that you can easily catch in vod format if you miss the twitch broadcast.
The timing of it is another reason why I'm trying to keep the episodes short. I'll speak of it in terms of PDT and EDT since it's an NA focused event. The broadcast begins at 9pm PDT, which is midnight on the east coast on a weeknight. Obviously this isn't 100% ideal but I don't want to overlap with WCS EU, WCS NA or the Day[9] Daily. That pretty much leaves me with the given time 9PM PDT.
Would love to get more feedback guys! Also be sure to tune in again tonight for a ZvT! I totally understand yesterday's ZvZ is not everyone's cup of tea, but this was an EPIC game. =]
Also we'll be going live in about 40 minutes with the Friday cast. If you were to tune in for one of the casted games this week, make it this one because it's the AWESOME game of the week! I can tell you...it's pretty awesome. http://www.twitch.tv/feardragon64
Also big shout out tonight to @KurenTV for broadcasting tonight's show as I am going to be preoccupied during it. Cheers all! =D
And of course if you can't catch the show live, feel free to check out the vods as always, uploaded at 10pm PST the night of the broadcast over at: http://www.youtube.com/feardragon64
Really cool idea, and I'll definitely be watching it live when I can. One piece of feedback, and I'm not being rude here, you should work on your casting. It felt rather bland. Not being an expert on the subject, I can't think of any more constructive feedback than that. Maybe if you could get in touch with some of the professional casters for their feedback? Or even get some guest casters?
It strikes me that since much of the show will be you casting, making your skill at it stand out would help the program a great deal.
Hope you read this, I'm glad to see some support for the NA scene, good luck!
On September 30 2013 07:20 opterown wrote: hi feardragon, can you make sure to link your stream on TL to the event whenever it starts? otherwise the event will have to be closed thanks!
Hi opterown! Sorry about Saturday! The stream went down for a minute and it detatched from TL. I wasn't actually streaming so the person streaming had to contact me and reattach to the TL event, which took 5-10 min. I'll be more careful about it in the future!
And bohemond, no offense taken! If you can narrow down what you thought made my casting bland, I'd be glad to hear it!
I think this is a good idea, but as you are doing reviews of the game you are doing it more in the style that a caster would. This should be an analytical cast, with the player on skype during the broadcast, while you are asking questions to them about what's happening in the game. Not you casting the replay of a NA semi-pro.
@aka_star: I actually do not have a glass eye. That would be super cool though. That sounds like an amazing way to hide a ring if you were ever going to propose to someone though.
@dream: In a lot of ways I agree with you. When I was initially thinking about the series, I wanted to have the player with me and kinda co-casting the game alongside me, explaining it to myself and the audience. However, the unfortunate limitation of working fulltime and players being very busy(between working fulltime/school and playing) made scheduling not only the interview and funday time but the time to cast 4 games(totaling to approx 3-4 hours) became a bit too unreliable. I really do agree with what you're saying though. So let me just ask, do you think a good substitute for having the player on during the cast would be to spend some time from Sunday's "fun event" going over their thoughts on each of the games? It wouldn't be in the extreme level of detail but it's certainly something I'd be open to doing. I would love to hear any other suggestions you might have to improve this though. In the meanwhile, I will definitely try to do a better job asking the right questions during the interview so I can be better equipped to pick apart and analyze their play during the casts!
Ok! 2 more hours until the start of week 2 with Clarity Gaming's SaroVati! This guy is amazingly awesome and today we're covering the interview with him so come check it out for sure! I've taken a bunch of suggestions and improved the show a bit so tune in and give your feedback on the new opening and formatting of the interview! Looking forward to seeing you all there http://www.twitch.tv/feardragon64
Got another episode in about 30 minutes! Tonight we're watching Clarity Gaming's SaroVati take on Evil Genius' Suppy! Recently these two encountered each other in the Collegiate Starleague Finals where Suppy beat him 4-0! Let's find out what SaroVati can do today or if this will be a repeat of the CSL tournament finals!
Hey Shatter. I totally agree with you(though it's 9pm pst, 12am est), but this is an unfortunate side effect of WCS taking up most of the day. Between WCS EU happening in the morning, WCS NA in the afternoon-evening, and the Day[9] Daily right after WCS NA, this is the best time I could find. Daily usually ends around 8:30ish PM pst, so I start at 9pm pst.
Sorry for the timing. I agree with you! You can always catch the vod that comes out at 10pm pst, 1am est(1 hour after the live airing). Hopefully I can figure out a solution in the future. =]
Time for another episode in about 30 minutes! We're moving onto the next matchup: PvT! Definitely my favorite matchup to watch and Clarity Gaming's SaroVati makes it more fun with some awesome control! Watch tonight's game as he takes on Denial's KawaiiRice in a sick PvT!
But we're back with PvP Thursday! tonight SaroVati takes on the young protoss from team .SCA, Astrea! This PvP is pretty micro intensive so don't blink! Or maybe you should if you're SaroVati. What do I mean? Come watch now and find out! http://www.twitch.tv/feardragon64
I think you should try an earlier time, just as a test, some people might watch this over day 9 and WCS, which have been going on forever, this could be a nice break
Edit: Also for very selfish reasons. I cant stay up that late ;p, and I wanna watch!!!
I'm actually thinking about trying for 8:30PST, 11:30PST instead. It might overlap with a tiny bit of the daily and it's only 30 minutes earlier but since most episodes are only about 30 minutes long, ending before/right around midnight would be really nice for the east coast. Any earlier and I'm usually at work or something on Tues/Thurs. T_T
Anyways, I might try for this starting next week. The changes will be reflected in the OP, Liquidpedia and the TL calendar if I decide to do so. =]
P.S. Glad you think so Theory! Vods for the first 4 are up on youtube already. =D
We're live with the AWESOME game of the week! It's Clarity Gaming's SaroVati with another game vs EG's Suppy! This game is seriously awesome so come check it out now! http://www.twitch.tv/feardragon64

The NA scene doesn't need publicity. It has publicity. It needs tournaments.
For Christ's sake, no more charity.
While I agree that it definitely needs more tournaments, a lot of great NA players are playing in smaller tournaments or team leagues all the time AND being casted AND listed on the TL calendar. Unfortunately, people often tune into these streams and immediately leave because they don't know the players(even though they're fantastic players that take games off of big name players sometimes!).
JonSnow is a great example of this! He was a player in team leagues like the URTL but most people didn't know about him! Even now, he's managed to qualify for WCS America(over chinese super star XiGua and korean Motok, as well as a few others), but he STILL isn't well known enough for people to stay tuned. I think it has partially to do with people not recognizing the player, which what I'm hoping to do with this series. I don't think this series is charity either. The players aren't getting anything from this outside of publicity, and I have no ads on any of my content so I'm not either.

This post is so sad.
This isn't true at all, we need tournaments and ways to get people to know the players. Both are good ways to do so not just tournaments which koreans dominate anyway.
for Christs sake at least try to make a post that makes you look semi intelligent.
Ok it is almost time for another episode! We're going to be finishing off week 2 with the funday cast as Clarity Gaming's SaroVati teaches me how to dance! After he makes me a learned man in the ways of picking up women at the club, we'll kick back and talk a bit about the games he submitted. Definitely tune in for this episode as he gives some FANTASTIC insight into his games that any protoss player can incorporate into their play! Episode starts at 9pm PST! http://www.twitch.tv/feardragon64

I actually love this concept and applaud you for what you are doing and will do for the NA community. It's close to what Day9 does, but alot more localized to NA while Day9 focuses on the higher echelons of the proscene.
I am very interested and look forward to learning Everyone should aspire to being featured here too XD
@AztecL Thanks! It's great to hear that you're interested! Hope you find it worth your time. =]

I wish you, and all the players involved, the best. I hope your project is a success, and that your life is good.
So my reasons for giving this constructive criticism are benevolent:
You should not say things like "Having said that" and "with that being said" if the next thing you say has nothing to do with what the previous thing you said.
Try to be more mindful of the words you choose. I know you can get better with practice.
Thanks vodtoast! I really appreciate it. That's actually one of my biggest habits I'm trying to break! Going to work extra hard on it to break the habit. xD <3

I tune into this and its a random, disjointed interview with someone I don't know or like some FFA custom.
I hope you find this criticism constructive because I'd like to support the NA scene but I find your program quite unappealing.
Thank you! You make a really good point! I'll definitely look to improve this as best I can for the next season!
