Following our award winning series of interviews with Challenger League players from the Anglosphere (Part 1, Part 2), we've decided to widen our scope and look to an oft overlooked part of the SC2 scene: China. With some help from digmouse, we tracked down the Chinese players competing WCS America and tried to find out a little more about them.
*Interview was performed a while back, so some answers could be dated.
ZOO.TOP
Please introduce yourself! Hi everyone, I'm Top from the Chinese progaming team Zenith of Origin.
How did you decide on your ID? I used a Chinese ID back when I started playing Starcraft II. After I joined an amateur clan, the captain said "you should get an English ID", so I choose this.
Most notable accomplishment/Proudest moment in SC2: WCS 2012 China Nationals 3rd place. It was my first offline major event and I was proud to make it to the Winner's Finals.
Your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player? The strength is probably that I'm in the shadows, I can't be read and prepared against. My weakness is the lack of experience.
What SC2 unit represents you best, and why? Immortal, I'm a frontal assault kinda guy.
Who is your favorite player and why? Movie from BW, and Bisu.
One thing you would change about StarCraft II. Reapers require Tech Lab.
Form a team with any other 5 players, not including those currently on your team. Jim, Loner, Infi, XiGua, XY.
Who will win Season 1 of WCS AM, EU, and KR? There are too many strong players in the KR region, can't really decide. I'm not very familiar with a lot of players in AM and EU, so I'd rather not say about that.
If you could play in WCS America or Europe without lag, which would you pick? I would choose EU if that were the case.
How many years would it take for China to become the best in the world at StarCraft II if it were an Olympic sport? At least a couple of years, the gap is simply too big.
What did you think of your last match against c.KiLLeR in WCS Challenger? My last match? Made too many mistakes in that match. I wasn't in a good shape, but luckily I stabilized in game 2. I think my opponent's mindset was messed up in game 3, so I won.
Prospects on next match against LG-IM_Fenix? Aiming to win, duh.
Who will win Season 1 of WCS AM, EU, KR? viOlet, Stephano and INnoVation.
If you could play in AM or EU without lag, which would you pick? I'm fine with both, as long I'm good enough I'll make it through.
How many years would it take for China to become the best in the world at StarCraft II if it were an Olympic sport? Should be pretty fast, China will improve quickly.
What did you think of your last match again Oz? I'm actually quite pressured playing Oz, being PvP means you lose if you are not careful for one second, so I tried to play solid in that match.
Prospects on next match against ViBE? Advance by 2-0, I like playing against Zergs.
Favorite food:Hotpot. Flash or Jaedong? Flash. Cats or dogs? Dogs. Coke or pepsi? Coke. Soap or body wash? Body wash.
They both looked pretty strong in their matches, the chinese players are doing pretty well in WCS. I would like to see a western team to pick up a chinese player to give him more opportunity to travel.

Fnatic did once with Sen. On topic: Jim is a very good player. Hope he gets sucessful in sc.

I think medicine is probably the biggest field where pagers are still used. And I think some restaurants use them to tell their guests that their food is ready.
A Better Tomorrow! Classy choice from Top there. My steelbook special edition copy of that film is one of my most cherished possessions (DVD-wise, at least).

Fnatic's Brood War team was entirely Chinese ^^
Chinese players in European teams were very common in Warcraft III.
Wish the Chinese scene would become more 'international', participating in events etc. It's a huge market, Blizzard really need to market SC2 there, and make it more accessible.
Weird that people don't know floppy's, cd players and pagers. I've never even seen a pager in my life, but it's kind of common knowledge I would think. Oh well.
Not sure top really understood the "to win agaisnt any other team" implided by the "pick 5 players" :D. Because I'm pretty sure Jim's list roll over it pretty hard .

Even if he is young, it's not like CDs are a thing of the past. I have several lying on my desk right now lol. But I guess disc mans where only popular for a few years.

To be fair I didn't think the question implied "to win against any other team" either.
I feel like this shows us more about which players have the best sense of humor than anything else, which is fine by me . Jim is kind of hilarious lol.

Yeah but he took it like "pick the 5 best players in china" instead of "pick your 5 favorites players" (well ok, it is probably his 5 favorites players, but we don't know why..). I looked at it and pretty much everyone had choices more interesting (from jim wiht the "OMG the 5 best players in the world" to tliea with the 5 gumiho team, to other guys with funny team compositions)

Jim indeed has some really funny personality. Some trivia about Jim: He always hold that humble smile on his face, and calling every elder pro 'laoshi' (which is like sensei in Japanese). And he then stomp his opponent over badly under his kind of humble smile. Jim got famous in China for his cannon rush. Jim could tell who the player is even he is playing under an alias on ladder.

cd player wasn't really popular in China. I mean, people know CD or boombox and stuff, but you rarely see a cd player. I'm 28 and I think I only saw cd players 5 times or so.

They are pretty old. It's actually not surprising that people don't know what they are especially since a lot of sc2 pros would have been like 8 years old or something when these were in use.

My brother is 18 years old, he doesn't only know what they are but he has used them all (except for pager, my dad used one though).
It would be like me not knowing what a record was.
I remember pagers being a hip thing in the early to mid nineties (outside hospitals, that is), until eventually mobile phones started to take over. Anyone remember the early mobile phones? So much heavier and bulkier than today, and I hated it whenever that external antenna broke off my Nokia ones LOL. Thankfully, my follow-up Siemens and SonyEricsson ones did not have protruding antennas anymore. xD
