Hello TL,
I'm curious if anyone in our community who's fluent in Korean can give us some indication of:
How HOTS is being received overall in Korea? Are people starting to see it as a true BW successor? Is it being played in PC Bangs? (More so than WOL?) What do they have to say about MLG Winter?
Thanks, it's always interesting to see what the KR perspective on things is.
EDIT- I just realized I didn't include a ? in my title, which will mislead some people. I apologize if that's the case. EDIT 2-Thanks mods for putting the button hook in my title. =D

Im actually really interested in this as well. I read that HotS went back to the top 10 of most played PC games in PC Bangs from a reddit source i believe
|
Dam misleading title! Now I'm curious too D:

It's out of the top 10 currently.
But MLG was one of the most searched items on Naver yesterday. I think we'll see how big HotS is or the excitement for it is on the night the Gangnam GOM studios open. See how many people show up for that.

While I can't recall any specifics, on SoTG Artosis/Wolf gave the impression that the korean launch went well with lots of people lined up to get copies.

and #6 is broodwar. i would have never expected such ranking actually, i always thought sc2 was quite big in korea, but it doesn't seem to be the case?

6 being Brood War and 10 being Frozen Throne is well..
Interesting haha.

Starcraft 1 still holding Strong at 6 while HOTS is out of top 10.....I don't like the sound of that....

Wait, Warcraft 3 is 10th? I feel like that came out of nowhere.

SC2 was never big in Korea. Yes there's a fanbase and a following, but in a sense, it's fueled by die hard fans of KESPA players and some eSF players. Main reason why older games like BW and others are high on that list is their availability, they are cheaper if not free, also explains why free games like LoL do so well. More casual friendly too.
The only way Blizzard can really make SC2 stay as a very popular game in Korea is to make a MP version of it free, adding LAN support wouldn't hurt either (dare I say, it should be required). That would make it very popular in PC Bangs, and many more casuals will come into the game that way. But they won't - it affects the bottom line too much.

SC2:WoL i.e. blizzard killed itself in the korean market even before it launched mainly due to the Kespa vs Blizzard/GOM deal. If they worked out the differences and OGN + co naturally transitioned into SC2 without the factions (it would've been on national TV also), the impact it would've been huge in a positive way especially when nada and boxer was still active players. The broadcasting deal to GOM along with blizzard pulling the plug off BW out of nowhere and hence the negative press killed the potential korean market. It pretty much gave way for LoL.
I don't know about HOTS but the traction is slowly building.. although its no where near popular as LoL.
I also tend to think that they should of retained the english names for the units instead of the korean ones because it also alienated alot of the original fanbase (even the casters have a hard time getting accustomed to the new korean names even now).
Blizzard loyally screwed up here and simply did not have the right "vision".

thank god this is not a global ranking thingy, its only in Korea, It would be really sad otherwise, LONG LIVE BROODWAR ^^

We all know Kespa is one frustrating organisation but they are one of the reasons why BW lived for so long. Theres always pros next to cons.
I'm sorry but Blizzard's stance to the situation is what killed the SC2 momentum in Korea even before the game took off especially when Blizzard came outta no where with the whole legal action on BW when they could have done this FAR sooner.
Yes and I am Korean and this was the general view of why SC2 just didn't work out and why people were disinterested from the beginning. I swear a smooth transition could have reaped great results.. but they shot their own foot by entering the korean market with the wrong mindset.

This is a really good point-- A lot of people make a lot out of the PC Bangs stats, but it's true-- it isn't a typical PC Bang game. The numbers mean something, but they aren't indicative of most time spent on the games overall.
Plus the stream numbers were higher for HotS than for LoL during MLG afaik.

A lack of respect towards the chaebol oligarchs that run the country?
Getting shades of Milkis :p
That probably hurt the marketing to a degree but it's hard to see that as the dominant reason.
There's a story to be made about system compatibility, lan center availability and the unique circumstances surrounding BW's success.
Then ofc the actual game play was definitely inferior for the first few months. We had babybit and balance bugs from the beta. It was natural it was going to take time for that to sort out...
Best way to answer the question would be to figure out why LoL dominated. To do that though, it would require knowledge about WC3 and MOBA in korea pre-LoL.

PC bang gaming is a form of social activity that is representative of how strong a game is for the casual base.

I think the LoL event at MLG was some sort of exhibition with college teams and a small tourney for 4 professional teams or something, cannot really compare them. All I know is KT Rolster did win the LoL pro event :-) (disclaimer: I obviously don't play LoL or watch streams, just occasionally checking out results now some Korean teams are also competing).

You're right about knowing better in 5-6 months. But Stream numbers across the board for SC2 are up. Just looking now, Idra has over 10k and WhiteRa just under 5k. The thread on stream numbers hasn't shown 10k in a pretty long time. (not to derail the thread) I'm really curious to see an update to those numbers in a month or two.

Aside from the availability of BW versus SC2, I think that Koreans enjoy the gameplay of BW more. It involves more individual micro instead of mass versus mass. Basically, most people who have been around the BW age love their mechanical play. Furthermore, it is very easy for spectators to see this individual micro that happens in BW games; this is considerably less so in SC2.
It is kind of like American style baseball (homeruns etc) versus Asian/Japanese baseball ("smallball", more technical).

The problem with the PC Bang demographic is that it's a group that's already paying fees just to use the machine, and the PC Bangs themselves don't want to pay more than they have to when installing games.
Hence why the most popular games will always be F2P (like LoL) or require a single disc for install and no further payments.
The exception being MMORPGs, namely the ones that have the "addictive" gameplay mechanics and require almost daily interaction from players.

I'm pretty sure LoL is more popular because it's free and that's it. Reading into stuff like the KeSPA vs. GOM thing or Koreans apparently hating SC2's gameplay is silly, putting words into people's mouths, and overcomplicating it.
Korea is one of the capitals of free to play. Why else do you think hundreds of those FTP anime MMOs come out of Korea each year, specifically? They just lap it up. LoL is good and free, therefore it's extremely successful. SC2 is good but not free, so it's not. It's also cheaper for the PC Bangs as well, so it's more widely available.
Can you name any other non-FTP e-sports that are massive in korea? I can't. The cost is a much bigger issue than the gameplay, and it always will be to koreans.

Just based on what I've observed here I'd say HotS has been definitely better-received than WoL. These are a couple pictures I took at the launch party here in Seoul. I've seen more people playing it in PC Bangs recently and although it is true that PC Bang stats might not be the best litmus test for gauging popularity, it's still something to pay attention to. The real test is going to be seeing how many fans show up to events once the GSL, etc start rolling again. I personally think the scene is in for some good times with HotS.

![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/sM569VM.jpg)
Ultimately though I doubt that SC2 is ever going to be as popular as BW was here in Korea. The initial SC2 launch was rough due to various reasons and in that chaos other games stepped in and filled the gaps that were missing in terms of esports popularity. I'm not just talking LoL either. Other games like Sudden Attack, etc have their fan bases too.
I do think though that people care too much about SC2's popularity in Korea. Think about how MLG did this last weekend in viewer numbers. We've had huge turnouts for EU events recently too. At the end of the day we need to realize that Korea's a pretty small part of the SC2 fan base overall and we don't necessarily need the game to be wildly popular here to have it be successful elsewhere. So don't worry about it too much.
TLDR: SC2 isn't as huge in Korea as we'd like yet, but it actually doesn't matter as much as people think it does in the grand scheme of things.

It doesn't have to be discussed in a non-constructive way. E.G. -We know that LoL is huge based on a lot of different evidence. -We know that MLG was huge in S.Korea because of web search rankings -We know that LoL and SC2 received comparable stream numbers in Korea we can be reasonably sure then that sc2 is at least right now, receiving at least a comparable amount of hype as LoL -- that's interesting.
There are lots of reasons this line of reasoning may be flawed in specifics, but it paints a broad picture, and that's fine.

I'm kind of surprised. D3 in South Korea doesn't even have RMAH either (so there isn't much point to grind or farm once you completed Inferno IMO compared to versions with RMAH where you can make a few dollars while playing).

so that's whats with all the sudden attack commercials on the korean streams I was watching. Interesting. Also BW#6!

Does sudden attack have a e-sports scene? Looks like CS to me, just from looking at a few youtube videos.

Proleague/OSL is on OnGameNet, 2 times a week, cable television.

Playing a lot in PCbang myself, I would confirm that it is still rare to see any Korean playing SC2 at all. It is even hard to find computers fully updated with sc2/wol/hots patch at times, just to say how low the frequency is.
From multiple discussion with my Korean coworkers playing BW, i'd say that they are interested mildly in SC2, that Hots bringing new units makes it's cool but not as attractive (and they still want the lurker back! by the way). Maybe they are just not eager to learn the game again. Korean players of SC2 Hots/wol are a new generations apparently...
|
Maybe someone can correct me, but I don't believe SC1 was really popular in Korea until years after its release. Perhaps the same will happen with SC2. Once all the Kespa pros fully migrate over and hit their full form, with everyone on sc2 the popularity might increase.
Everything Destiny said is still true. Some of the problems he talked about have been fixed, and consequently more people are interested. Hopefully they continue to improve.

If you're going to buy HotS, I see no advantages for people to go out to be PC Bangs and play. It's not like LoL where you and your friends can go to a PC Bangs, set up some team games and play right next to each other.

My Canadian friends and I go out to the local internet cafe to play SC2 together fairly often. It is a little expensive but it turns it into a far more fun social experience.

Games are social activities. You want games that you can play with as many friends as possible especially if you go together with your friends to a PC Bang after school.
SC2 doesn't really offer that because the main attraction of SC2 is the 1v1. Let's say you go as a group of 5 to a PC Bang or so, you would want to play a game where everyone can play with each other together at the same time. SC2 can't offer that while LoL, Sudden Attack, MMOs can.
In wc3 and bw, this problem was alleviated because of the good custom games. But now these custom games have become a fully supported game with developers supports. Not sure if SC2 can still make a comeback even if the custom games are improved. The map editor, bnet and map creators really have to make something very engaging for SC2 to ever be popular in PC Bangs imo.

People should really stop suggesting the cause of SC2's unpopularity is not good custom game system. And people need to stop suggesting BW's rise is because of its awesome custom game system
10 years ago, there were just not that many options for gaming while now you really don't need to play the SC2 custom games for causality.
Even if the SC2's custom game system is more awesome than BW, it still will not generate its popularity from custom games.

SC2 is not a PC Bangs-type game. First real HotS Tournaments. and it was just another random day for LoL and HotS could barely beat it sometimes. not even for long. If they keep the numbers in like 5 6 months u could say it's going well but so far just expansion hype.
You guys also have to remember that so many more people play LoL. The fact the we can beat it or even be even in numbers should be considered incredible in my opinion.
|
Look at the jump between first and second on the chart- LOL is just crushing at the moment.
|
"Winning" in popularity against LoL is not really a worthwhile expectation to have. What's the stake in it, anyway? Heart of the Swarm can be very successful without being as successful as LoL. For instance the NFL is vastly, VASTLY more popular than other sports here in the USA, but that has nothing to do with whether those sports are successful or cool or anything else.
League of Legends is probably the single biggest game in existence outside of maybe some Facebook games, by the way. If you believe Riot, it's bigger than Call of Duty worldwide by quite a bit. Why bother yourself with how it's doing compared to Heart of the Swarm?
|
Seeing Sudden Attack on that list is cool. I love that game. Favorite FPS by a mile! And like Turgid said. Who cares if SC2 beats LoL viewership. I watch both, and enjoy both. I couldn't care less about which is beating which.
Also, I think HotS will increase SC2 playership by quite a bit in Korea. Who knows by how much though.

I will just politely disagree with that. Playing in PCBang with friends, either 1v1, 2v2 3v3, is a lot of fun. Even laddering next to each other is fun since you can: complain and rage, get advise, be coached live, and just reduce the hard-feeling of it being with your friends.
It is just one way to look at it. Korean like online/social game more (in comparison to let's say japanes players). PCBang however, is not primarily for social interaction, it is a 24h/7 service access to internet and any online game (even if you didnt buy an official character from bliz for example), that is cheap and let you play as much as you want.
Most people going there are just transferring their life into the internet games, just like older range of people would spend their time in bars or gambling saloon. Now we need real stats to talk more about trends and why would Koreans not be interested in playing more SC2 yet.

Actually, custom games are exactly why BW is still being played so much in PC bang.
Back on topic, the general consensus seems to be very positive. They like the fact that the game now seems to be more open and dynamic. But, HOTS will never challenge the likes of LOL or Sudden Attack in the PC bang rankings because these are team play games.

I don't buy the whole it was just a regular LCS day/exhibition tournament thing and that it doesn't mean much SC2 beat it.
I'm sure a regular TSM game would get more viewers than a major final with two Korean LoL teams.

All you people comparing the LoL stream and Sc2 streams....stop.
It's like comparing the popularity of Facebook games with console games.
And I don't say that to say LoL is similar gameplay-wise to FarmVille I am referring to its popularity. It's just an accepted fact that ATM it is a worldwide phenomenon, in large part due to it being F2P. At the end of the day, lol may have had 100k+ viewers on average, but Sc2 still had 2 streams which had nice big viewer counts too(I watched Friday/sat, red averaged 50-70 while blue was pretty consistent between 18-30k). LoL being more popular doesnt kill sc2. in fact We should be thanking LoL because all those viewers mean success for MLG and esports in general; besides during downtime I ended up watching some LoL and some CoD so I'm sure some people experiencienced Starcraft the same way. I'm more than happy for sc2 to be the nhl of the esports world. I don't need to be the #1 esport as long as sc doesn't disappear and realistically I don't think lizard will let that happen!
Tl;dr being pro-sc is no better than being an ignorant racist. Defending your game while hating all others is horrible, there is room for everyone just like there is room for many genres of sport at olympics(which is how esports is marketed, because it makes the most sense). Enjoy the fact that we can have MLGs with millions of viewers to increase the success of esports. We ride together we die together.

The only reason SC2 is up from #21 to #11 is the novelty-newness factor and people playing the campaign. It will go down soon when people realize the gameplay is still about ball vs ball and gimmicky drops. I see HOTS popularity falling faster than even WOL in Korea and possibly worldwide.
The worst part is, tanks are now even more useless than they were in WOL and "MECH TERRAN" == make widow mines from factory lol.

BW had a dedicated section in major websites with eSport articles and news coming out weekly or on gameday. View counts were pretty high within the sports section and considering how wildly baseball and European soccer are popular in Korea, it said something. Naver also had an online streaming on proleague game days with dedicated eSports section.
With the release of SC2, those are all gone. I have never ever seen a single article related to SC2 on web portals. Simply said, SC2 is not popular in Korea, with or without HotS. 11th in PC Bang ranking means pretty much no one plays it.
Oh and Koreans don't play DOTA they play Kaos and LoL
|
I think its important to realize, that, how popular a game is and how many people actually buy and play the game is 2 different things. Of course there's some connection there... But there are so many sports out there that are popular and people watch them on a regular basis, and still there are only a few that play them often. For example Snooker, was picked up by Eurosport, and it has a really big viewer audience the last few years, but I'm pretty sure very few people play it. The same can be said about other games as well. Just because a lot of people don't play SC2 often, doesn't mean they don't enjoy watching it. I'd like to add, that this comparison "Sc2 vs LoL", is completely pointless, and people should not be annoyed by the fact that another game is growing, or is already bigger. We shouldn't aim to get huge numbers or everyone watching the game. Instead we should aim on people watching the game regularly and not having people leave the game for whatever reason. Stability is much more important than %growth. For example look at a game like Chess... It doesn't have huge viewer numbers, very few people play chess regularly and still there's a ton of money in that "industry", and they have a stabilized audience, big enough to sustain the game. I know there are differences, but I don't think we should expect Sc2 to be the most popular game, because of it's nature. It's still a great game, a ton of people still care a lot about it, and there's a lot of money invested into it and a lot more money is gonna enter in the future. Lastly recall that a lot of people in the early days of Sc2, said that a lot of companies weren't ready to invest in Sc2 and e-Sports in general because it was a new game-industry. So you never know where the game will head after 3-4 years, when companies see that investing in a game like Sc2 is a lot safer than it was in the past.

BW is popular because it actually has custom games. Starcraft 2 will never match it because the custom game system or "Arcade" is still so terrible in HotS.
|
Let's admit it. The fun factor just isn't there when you play the game.
A game only becomes popular when lots of people feel it's fun and thus want to play it more. The problem of SC2 is just that there aren't 'lots' of people feel it's fun to play.
And that's pretty much about it.

I'm sure a regular TSM game would get more viewers than a major final with two Korean LoL teams. There weren't many good matches though. It's not like it was CLG vs TSM, or Curse vs TSM, or maybe Gambit Gaming vs TSM. It was TSM vs shitter teams. I think there's a significant overlap in viewers between LoL and SC2. If LoL games are going to be one-sided stomps, then might as well watch SC2.
Besides, Curse is the new TSM.

I think that in general playing a game with people is more fun than playing a game alone. Think of MMOs or online shooters, etc. Currently, SC2 isn't really there for the cooperative aspect (2v2s, 3v3s, 4v4s, or customs). The competitive scene focuses on 1v1s and the custom game scene isn't what it was in BW. I'd argue that's why SC2 doesn't "feel" as fun to play--the social aspect is just not there. Contrast that with League of Legends where you can play as a group of 5 people all on TeamSpeak or Skype and well.. that's probably why a casual player might be more attracted to that game.

See how many people show up for that. Could you link to the site that has the top 25 games? I'd like to revisit in the future http://gametrics.com/ #10 is Frozen Thrones? O.o and #6 is broodwar. i would have never expected such ranking actually, i always thought sc2 was quite big in korea, but it doesn't seem to be the case? Amm fixing the arcade would probably do more. You are overestimating the korean gamers most of them are very casual and probably play UMS... With the horribly designed arcade you can't do the same...

No, it's not. the prize pool is so low, and the tournaments have a fee inscription. so few people can live of play chess.

For PC bangs:
SC2 was at around #20-21 before HOTS, after the release it went as high as 9th on the 2nd day of release..
It's fallen to 14th as of today. Will probably continue to slip a bit more until a small bump when proleague starts again. I'm guessing it will rest around #16-17 after a few months.

It's a lot easier to use and therefore better for the purpose. My brother does some simple programing and web design and he's said he'd go program for money in his free time rather than make a SC2 map. When we played Broodwar he was making bounds, tug of wars, etc and playing with our friends. When he was 9 years old he made a nice, simple, but very fun bound map with ~20 creatively designed levels.
Now, he's 20 and the SC2 editor is too complicated for him to build maps with as a hobby. We also made a WC3 map back in the day (I hope I still have a USB with it somewhere, I was quite proud of it back then). While it was more difficult, it's nothing compared to the difficulty of a SC2 map.
Map makers could pump out great maps like EotA, ToB, enfo's, dbz, survival, tag, any arena/td map, etc in WC3 at incredible speeds. In SC2, you're essentially asking someone who is skilled enough to build quality cell phone/browser games to use your platform because of its superior graphics and processing power on the devices that will be running the maps in exchange for the $$$ you could possibly be earning from other platforms.
Just check some of the old modeling/map making sites. There were some 14 year olds on them. As far as SC2 goes, it's too difficult for the average 14 year old to jump aboard and become a useful member of your team.
It'll go a long way to bringing more people aboard. It can't be compared to say LoL as a measure of success. Many people get bored of games. LoL isn't successful because it's super-super addictive fun and nobody quits. LoL is successful because they can get people through the door, then they can replace the ones that leave with new people at a good rate. Being a free game helps.
BW was popular for different reasons. There were tons of custom games and one could just go play another. It was like a whole platform onto itself. As a child, I've bought at most 10 games. BW, D2, and WC3 took up most of my play time. Brood War never got as many people as LoL did through the door.
SC2 can't bring people through the door as fast as LoL, as it costs money. It also can't replace the ones that leave nearly anywhere near as well because the customs are extremely limited and people get bored of the de facto game mode faster than new buyers trickle into an old game.
SC2/BW relies on player retention, LoL relies more on broadening its audience. Helping custom games would increase SC2's player retention.
My attention wasn't caught nearly as much by SC2 as it was by BW. I never needed a new game when I was playing BW. I could always play customs. When I finally got bored of years of customs I switched to Diablo 2. I switched back about 1.5 years later and found tons of new customs.

Snaps someone gets it. The same maps you play today in Arcade are the same games that you played 2 years ago in WoL.

Something I have noticed is that those who do play SC2 in pc bangs now seem to be a lot younger. Also, a lot of my friends who followed pro-gaming (generally more casual than the avg TL.netter) lost interest in e-sports after kespa made the switch to SC2. None of them knew about MLG winter, let alone the fact that flash was playing in the finals lol.
2. I see it being played rarely, as was the case with WOL. LoL, D3 and mmorpg's are definitely the most popular games being played still.
Not entirely sure why so many people are interested in what Koreans think of the game. For the sake of the growth of e-sports, I'd rather see the rest of the world view it as a competitive e-sports game instead of it just being a niche thing a small country and a handful of "foreigners" enjoy.

I just don't think RTS will ever score big again, the genre is dying out compared to more relaxed MOBA, MMORPGs etc. BW is still having it's loyal following because of it's legendary status but any other RTS just won't do well.. Perhaps if sc2 was just an updated clone of bw it would have done better in Korea but awful in the rest of the world. Still can't really deny BW is just the better design and sc2 will probably won't get close because of blizzard's lack of design talent for it's latest games

Considering StarCraft 2 is probably 5 times more popular outside of Korea than Broodwar was, I'd say even though the Korean market may be smaller, as long as viewer numbers keep up like they have been there will always be tournaments for the pros to play and show their skill and earn some money. That's what matters to me atleast, where the tournaments are hosted means pretty much nothing.
Especially when you look at the skill levels of the players at MLG. As long as Kespa let their players play outside of Korea from now on, there's always going to be added viewers for tournaments like MLG, Dreamhack etc. etc.

Yep, people are over-thinking this. It has nothing to do with custom games or that you have to buy it or whatever. The game is not very fun to play and thus not very addicting. It's fun watching streams and tourneys though.

Yeah, a-lot of people are really missing the way that pc bangs work. A pc bang can buy one copy of sc/scbw and cd generator it to a bunch of computers. Same thing with wc3, because cd generators work for those games, and your cd keys aren't tied to individual accounts. Meaning that if a pc bang wants to make available sc2 to 30 players that don't have their own accounts because they haven't bought the game, they need literally 30 accounts and 30 individually bought copies of the game. It's really basic, but I'm thinking alot of people don't know how pc bangs, cd keys, and tied accounts work when you're talking about making available a game to a bunch of different people simultaneously. It's much more common to see people playing f2p mmo's at pc bangs than wow because if you haven't bought the game previously, you can still play.

Usually when looking for the defition of a word one would start in a dictionary.
den·i·zen /ˈdenəzən/ Noun An inhabitant or occupant of a particular place. Synonyms inhabitant - resident - habitant - dweller - occupant
It's unusual to use it like this and the OP probably meant netizen, but there's nothing wrong with the word or the use of it in the OP.

Well giving away things for free would effect your bottom line. Blizzard has never been one to chase the top spot, which is good. I don't think they feel the need to make the game free and are happy with their numbers right now.
Also, I think SC2 suffered from not having the BW star players travel over instantly. I am sure there were a large number of fans in Korea that were saying "when Flash(or other player) feels it is worth his time, it will be worth mine." I am interested to see how if interests increases now that the BW stars have arrived.

HoTS is not a PC-Bang-type game due to its 1v1 nature. SC:BW is an exception in PC-Bangs because it's Korea Just logged onto D3 to see how many people are online. 1500 open games... yeah, if that's worldwide... So how many ppl must be playing a game for you to enjoy it?
That isn't worldwide and that is only games that have open slots, that doesn't count games that are already full or aren't open.

SC2 is not a PC Bangs-type game. Why do you think this? I think its quite the opposite, RTS games are exactly the PC Bang type of games. Because there is no lan. That is why it isn't as good for that situation. ALSO: EDIT: Dakure, Crs is not the new TSM. That will never happen until St. Vicious gets the oddbro haircut.
LAN has nothing to do with it, just look at the top places of the ratings - only games who are not meant to be played on LAN.

Keep in mind people playing it in pc bangs =/= people being interested in the esport. Most korean fans are female and I highly doubt a lot of those actually play the game a lot. One thing is for sure: Right now hots is doing a lot better than wol did a week after release over there.

Pretty sure there are a selection of popular games installed on the computers and then people just use their own accounts to play the games with.

I doubt WCIII is Dota, while it may be a part of it Dota was never really popular there, they played Chaos(which is I believe not a WCIII custom map but its own client.) I assume WCIII itself is played(Moon, Lyn were /are really good wcIII players) and it was reasonably popular, moreover they might just play other custom maps aswell like TD or Pyramid escape or whatever they made there.
Dota 2 is not released yet in Korea and is being produced by Nexon, there is a rumor that Gom might include Dota 2 into their lineup(considering they can probably not compete with the Kespa LoL teams this is the right choice to do).

The Korean market isn't huge anyhow, Blizzard should be more concerned with the overall global figures for SC2 sales. Particularly China, that will make or break SC2.

There's a surprising amount of 4v4s going on in frozen throne every day

The original Chaos is a WC3 custom map and it is basically the same game as DOTA 1 but in Korean.
Edit: OK just tried it out and the heros and items are pretty different from original DOTA but it's still the same kind of game.

SC2 is not a PC Bangs-type game.
There were 3 LoL things happening AFAIK. 1: The NA pro teams from LCS played each other as part of their weekly game at MLG (they were supposed to do this at IPL as well). 2: An international Exhibition tournament with various teams from around the world (which KT won). 3: Smaller NA teams trying to win some cash and hopes at getting into LCS. So while this wasn't like a huge finals for anything, you had some of the best teams from around the world and ALL of the best NA teams playing matches at this MLG.

A game only becomes popular when lots of people feel it's fun and thus want to play it more. The problem of SC2 is just that there aren't 'lots' of people feel it's fun to play.
And that's pretty much about it.
Wow, are you into everyone's mind gauging their fun-o-meter? You're projecting your feeling about the game onto others.

I dont know if Im making a good point here but shouldn't it be a difference between popular esports and a popular game?
Bw was popular esports in Korea but not much in the rest of the world. It was a really popular game world wide though.
sc2 is obviously not (yet maybe) a popular game in Korea and also not a popular esports... but in the rest of the world its a esports success I think.
whats the big esports in Korea right now? lol and Bw here and there? some south Korean said here that young one enjoy the game and we can see some young peep performing really well in proleague... maybe sc2 is building up the next gen of pro players who will play lotv in some years.

Koreans do watch MLG since it was re-streamed on afreeca. But, it was not like 20k was watching or anything. Probably a total of 5k (maybe more for the finals) through the few streams that was on.

Starcraft can never be as popular as any of the other games in the top 10 (regarding pc bangs). When i am in turkey, i visit pc bangs from time to time, and they are almost always full with kids and young adults that want to have a fun time playing games together. In countries like turkey, going to the pc bang is cheap as hell, so instead of buying games, people just visit pc bangs and play the games the Pcs have to offer. If the PC has broodwar on it, they can immediately launch that shit up and play against each other (though dota 1 is more popular in turkey´s pc bangs), but when it comes to sc2... not so much. The exact same thing probably applies to pc bangs in korea. The people that go to pc bangs go there because they dont have the games themselves and the pc bangs are cheap as hell, but since they dont own a copy of sc2, they wont be able to play sc2 in the pc bang..
Thats my take on it anyways.

This thread makes me wonder if PC Bang could take off in the USA but Americans love their privacy so probably not.

i've been to pc bang in the states, if you dont have your own sc2 account, you can't play. does blizzard have a pc bang sc2 version? even if pc bang bought 40 copies of the game, because how it must be logged in and such, it is not feasible for proper pc bang operations.
i think blizzard should focus on this to really make it bloom

What privacy?
Jokes aside, if this wasn't here already:
SC2 with 173% growth in Korean bangs during launch week
Despite not enjoying the same popularity in Korea as its predecessor, StarCraft 2 has seen a marginal increase in playtime in PC cafe's during the launch week of its expansion. 4,000 PC bangs (from a total of 15,817) in Korea have been sampled to extract this statistics and the results are showing a 173.48% increase in playtime for StarCraft 2. With 105,215 hours played, SC2 climbed ten spots the past week and is currently ranked 11th among the most popular games in South Korea. Despite the tremendous growth, however, SC2 still seems to be lagging behind the ranking leaders or even its predecessor, StarCraft 1 (currently ranked 7th), according to Gametrics.com table. GosuGamers
So while it may not be in Top10, people are curious.

It's mostly the small cities that are losing population. Those aren't exactly the cities that people are talking about when they pose this question. The major urban centers are gaining in population. That said, PCs aren't really considered expensive here in the US and families are likely to just buy one for every member.

pcbang used to be huge in Taiwan, then it all got wiped out except a very few after computers become cheap and labor becomes more expensive. Most pcbangs (from taiwan experience) are dirty and taiwa/Korea have cheap high end internet in the range of 25Mb/sec that you can get for $10 a month, there is no reason why you would ever go to pcbang unless you have very restricted parents.
I am willing to bet if the korea government doesn't subsidize pcbang so heavily in Korea, they would all go out of business too. Then again this is probably true for alot of their companies as Korea pretty much subsidize just about everything. That's how they are able to complete globally easily when samsung are being fed with government money

If you ask me South Korea is not the biggest priority for Blizzard. Yes, they are telling us how important SK is for them etc. etc., but at the end of the day it's just one country of the many. In order to push SC2 in the PC bangs they must change their entire business model and for what ? Country that has 50mill population. Does it really worth it ? Not really in my opinion.

Here's another set of interesting rankings that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else: the Afreeca rankings. (Google Translate says they're from "March week 2", so I guess that ended right around the HoTS launch.
1. League of Legends 2. Minecraft 3. SimCity (up 4) 4. Starcraft (down 2) 5. Sudden Attack (down 1) 6. Starcraft 2 (up 3) 7. Lineage (down 2) 8. World of Warcraft (up 8) 9. Kart Rider (down 2) 10. Warcraft (down 1) [WC3, I assume?]
http://gametv.afreeca.com/
Getting close to BW and passing Kart Rider is pretty impressive, IMO, and once SimCity inevitably takes a dive SC2 should be in the top 5 (especially because most of Week 2 probably included the days right before the HoTS launch, which were pretty dead). Also, World of Tanks is 18th and DOTA2 is AWOL... good luck to GOM with those, they'll need it...

From a viewer perspective... Why should Hots be better recieved than Wol? The only thing that makes it more fun are fast medivacs and thats about it. Z/P still seem Ball vs Ball boredom... At least thats what i got from watching a bit of MLG...

PC bangs are a cultural thing in Korea, very few go out of 'necessity'.

There is just a lot more action all around.
Reapers are much better and produce some action early game. Oracles are good and provide some more harassment options which are fun to watch. Mothership core or whatever it is called allows for some more harassment options for protoss early on Vipers allow zerg to have interesting ways to try and break a Terran mech so those games aren't as often just boring turtles Widow mines can allow for some cute micro trying to pull mines into the terrans own army Medivac buff seems to be leading to more multipronged drops which once again, are fun to watch. Between infestor nerf/viper introduction/hydra and ultra buff zerg games aren't just 100% turtle until maxed on brood infestor Protoss air buffs gives them more options so that games aren't all the same for them either...
IMO almost every change they've made makes the game more fun to watch.

Yeah but people like my won't return because units are somewhat different.
The thing the game lacks is consistency. I didn't follow the game for half a year and after returning it feels like 50% of players that matter are new/nonames I couldn't really care about.
The other 50% are 40% faceless koreans and the 10% foreigners/koreans with a character can't make up for the boredom that is 90% of the players.
I'm really sad that the game of my dreams, which it was after release of WoL, didn't manage to keep that aura of epicness I always felt ;(
Back then, when I used to watch all of Husky's / Day9's / Psy's casts, every player had a distinct style of play everyone knew about. You could literally see their progress week after week. Fun times.

The consistency you are thinking of just isn't possible with a dynamic game like Starcraft that will be constantly evolving and changing because of metagame shifts, patches, and expansions for the next half-decade or so at least.

Also, World of Tanks is 18th and DOTA2 is AWOL... good luck to GOM with those, they'll need it... Hmm, that's quite surprising. Are there any big names that stream SC2 on Afreeca (and not on, say, Twitch)?
There are a lot of VoDs at least that area being shown, so dunno if those numbers are calculated.

Then, 3 years in e-sport is quite long, you can't expect to have the same names 2 years ago still at the top. And still MC, MKP, MVP etc... are still some of the best players in the world; this is definitely consistency. There are new names which is a really great thing, new blood, new style. If you really cared about SC you would be excited as I am when new guys break through with a bang. Think jjakji leenock where ppl said "no way leenock is in form jjakji is a lucky joke" and he showed one of the smartest, most well planned series in SC history. It doesn't matter if he wasn't huge before if you are really passionate for the game andnotvjust a fairweather fanboy.

I am willing to bet if the korea government doesn't subsidize pcbang so heavily in Korea, they would all go out of business too. Then again this is probably true for alot of their companies as Korea pretty much subsidize just about everything. That's how they are able to complete globally easily when samsung are being fed with government money Name a country that doesn't subsidize everything. PC bangs are a cultural thing in Korea, very few go out of 'necessity'.
Most countries don't subsidize everything... I don't think you understand how easy it is to get grants in Korea. The government would literally pay 50% of R&D if you request for it. Its stupidly easy to make money when you barely have to invest anything and just export all your products.
They can keep up this practice because they are competing with foreign companies and not among themselves, but it really undermines spirit of free trades when your private company is up against another that is sponsored by the government.

See this is simply not true and whenever i read this i feel like people are just looking for something to bag out. How many championships do MVP, MC, nestea, life etc have to win before people stop saying stuff like this?
If anything the top players have remained extremely similar and the only reason that there would be so many unfamiliar faces is because of the huge influx of kespa players.
Let's just look at MLG (which btw is a whole new game so you should expect different faces) and i'm assuming that's what you're basing your comment off. Life, polt, creator, MC, hero, MVP, taeja, bomber, parting, jjakji, marineking, seed and leenock were the ESF players and they have all been around for AGES. So i don't see how they can be used to prove anything. The rest are kespa players and they only just switched over so of course that was going to bring in a temporary change at the top. Other than that it's a bunch of foreigners who have also mostly been around since the beginning.
There is no truth to what you're posting. Further i don't even see how it is a complaint. Isn't it a good thing to see different people winning? Like i know we don't want it to be random and requiring no skill but we also want to see different players succeeding. I thought WOL struck a really good balance. We saw plenty of different winners but we also had the likes of nestea, MVP, MC, life and DRG who saw consistent success.
If you don't want to watch SC2 then more power to you but try and come up with a better reason than that.

Go back to school instead of trying to get a taste of Dustin Browder's sphincter Umm you learned statistics in elemantry school? Thats some heavy shit yo'!
You just registered (on tlnet) to bash on SC2:HotS. I respect the core of your opinion but you shouldn't wonder people won't reply in a serious way to you. Maybe go back to school and learn how to properly forumlate an argument to present a - maybe - valid point. Kthxbai.
Of course trends are downward. People played trough the campaign, They ranked in ladder and went 50%-50%. Now they go back to what they did before. LoL, DotA, Smite, PoE whatever...
Same goes for me, ranked with every race on different server and now I just occasionally hop on if I really feel like playing.
edit: to set it in relation, the first week of HotS there were about ~150% more people online in my friendslist than before. From those +150% some are still playing. We are not expierencing a loss in players. Just a normal huge increase and then a decline to where it will normalize. Even as the Xfire graph suggests(was there something about learning stats and stuff? =)).

On March 19 2013 09:49 DoA wrote:Just based on what I've observed here I'd say HotS has been definitely better-received than WoL. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/iGLGFKp.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/sM569VM.jpg) Ultimately though I doubt that SC2 is ever going to be as popular as BW was here in Korea.
I find it interesting that DoA sees it this way. Yes Korea is small in terms of numbers but they have unprecedented culture and infrastructure, big reason why they have such a successful pro scenes and English casters find jobs there.
In BW the big corporations came in and sponsored the pro teams, this was unprecedented for eSports in anywhere else in the world and BW at its peak was undoubtedly a professional sport. Unfortunately SC2 never lived up to that due to the reasons already discussed but with the infrastructure and culture in place Korean pros still came out far far ahead of their foreign counterparts. This is something that is quite important and is also why a lot of people wish it'd be big in Korea because they will provide the top level pro scene, just like how everybody watches the NBA for basketball and UEFA Champions League + various European top leagues for football, people will watch Korean SC2.
Ultimately the foreign scene has failed to show they can usurp Korean dominance regardless of spectator/player numbers. We are also yet to see the same level of sponsorship though events-wise we're seeing big events like MLG, Dreamhack, IEM etc doing loads of catch up, they're kinda different as they're not ongoing year long tournaments but rather short, one-few day tournaments where Koreans can fly over and snatch all the top spots. In conclusion I'm saying the foreign scene need high level pro tournaments and high level pro players who can match up.
I still see Korea as vital for SC2 for the reasons above and think that Blizz shouldd really focus their efforts there. I'm not too sure if the SC2 community in general focus on the Korean scene as much as I do though, so I may be completely wrong but we will see how the foreign scene develops compared to the Korean scene.

I played sc2 pretty hardcore and was high, mid, low masters throughout the first 5 seasons or so. Played all the races. But I stopped playing because the game balance and gameplay was not enjoyable. Boring repetitive and frustrating. Whilst it was fun to cane noobs on multiplayer single player ladder was a dull grind. Not much variety in strategy for a "RTS" game imho.
On the other hand i have played dota for around 10 years and it is still a really fun game. I dont play computer games much anymore but I can enjoy the occasional dota session at pc.
If i was still playing pc games id be playing LOL or Dota2. Heres why: More interactive and team orientated, more open to casual players so i can play with friends, more variety in strategy, and more balanced than sc2 considering the immense variety of strats. Basically way more fun team games.
Anyway noticed that HOTS came out so came on here to see if there was any buzz. Was considering watching a season of gsl to check out the new units. But the overall poor game play, lack of variety and balance really kinda sc2 for me.
Just wondering why do you guys prefer sc2 over LOL or dota?

Because MOBAs are the most boring genre I have encountered in the history of competitive gaming. That's obviously just my own personal opinion, but I would play every single FPS, Fighting game, RTS or MMO before I'd play LoL or Dota.

The main problem with SC2 in Korea is that is just did not capture the super young market that BW did (fuck, I played it against my elementary school students a lot, never got to play them in SC2.
Home Pc's are fucking terrible in general, so they play these low spec games because they can play at home and the PC room. Also, those PC room stats don't really take in people who play at home and stuff....I mean the amount is probably low but it's still there.
SC2 is pretty popular in Seoul, maybe Daegu and MAYBE Busan, but everywhere else in Korea it's impossible to find anyone who has played the game.
As for why I don't play LoL, I get excactly 0 satisfaction from a win. I play a game, I win and I sit there like 'well fuck, that was alright'. However when I play SC2 a win gives me a massive buzz, and a loss gives me a bit of a buzz too. Dota 2 is enjoyable, but LoL is like playing minesweeper on a 10x10 with 1 mine

Is that mainly a problem with the way SC2 is distributed now, i.e. linked to personal bnet account/no LAN? Or is it more a function of needing a moderately powerful PC (though let's be honest, SC2 ain't exactly Crysis 3) ?

esports in general has been in steady decline in korea for some time now (since 2008 imo), with savior being the nail in the coffin. but i'm really interested to see what the next round in proleague will bring, as they're the biggest distributor of esports content in korea
|
Koreans enjoy BW more than SC2. Even big Korean companies are still following/sponsoring BW:

SC2's popularity runs off of BW's fame. If SC2 was the first in the series and released when SC/BW was released (with corresponding graphics at that time, etc), it would definitely not have done nearly as well in Korea.

Not in popularity.

Insulated SC2 diehards don't seem to fully grasp just how underwhelming the HOTS changes are. To the people who dismissed WOL long ago, these very minor changes are not going to bring them back into the fold. It's still the same game with the same problems that lead to their losing interest in the first place.

if the showmatch at korea between Life and Flash does not convince them it is a better game, i am afraid sc2 is lost in korea

Speak for yourself. I HATE WoL but HotS made SC2 a lot more interesting, and I'm starting prefer HotS TvT & TvZ over BW TvT & TvZ. Blizzard just needs to fix SC2 protoss' boring gameplay, and maybe add some kind of scourges for ZvZ muta-bling.

I love how many people seem to be absolutely sure that unless a game is the most popular, it's dead.

I like how this thread titled "Korean Denizens reactions to HOTS/MLG Winter?" is full of non-Koreans talking about how much Koreans don't like SC2 instead of what the Koreans who did watch MLG thought of HOTS...

In 2005, Ongamenet boasted a 3.1 percent viewership rating, ranking 9th among all cable channels. However [in 2008], its ranking dropped to 16th place, and the viewership also fell to 1.9 percent, according to research firm Nielson. Source: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/tech/2008/05/133_24407.html
If the decline was smooth from 2005 to 2008, that would be 15% of the previous year's viewers lost every year.

The popularity of a game has no bearing on how good the game is! Greatest MMO I ever played (Dark Age of Camelot) never had more than like 100k subs.
That being said, this should only surprise the people who bought into all the bullshit that HOTS was somehow going to make SC2 bigger than ever. This was talked up with such hilarious frequency on the various talk shows and by pros and others who are financially invested in making this a reality that I suppose it is understandable.
This is more likely what we are observing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_cat_bounce

I blame the lack of Mutalisk and Wraith dancing/micro (and Scout too if you researched the speed upgrade).
In terms of fun stuff you can do to your opponent in SC2 (that they removed) - They removed Vortex, making me lose interest in playing Protoss (no more Archon toilets anymore? MADNESS!!).
Now I have to get my fix by going Terran and nuking (or going Zerg and NPing their Medivacs which is neat because Losira did it when I thought about it).
The great thing about HotS is that the music is really good (lots of variety).
Besides that, the lack of Vortex kind of sucks honestly (Vortex isn't even that big of a deal in HotS now that ZvP, where Vortex was cited as a problem because it's a game decider due to BL Infestor in WoL, doesn't even rely on it anymore).
I can understand making Mutalisk kind of useless in some cases though (in which case, they could add a 3 second pre cast channeling time on Vortex, and an indicator like "Nuclear Launch Detected" to make it more predictable).
(Seriously though, I do miss archon toilets. Ever since that San vs Nestea game and also ever since the Mothership rush strategy in the TL forums, I have been a fan of archon toilets >.>.)

CJ herO totally agreed with me (in an interview, he too was disappointed in lack of Archon toilets).
I think it's just the coolness factor. Originally with the Mothership, I was disappointed (after playing SC2 for the first time) it was just an Arbiter that moves slower.
Then... San vs Nestea... ARCHON TOILET!
I have always been hyped whenever I warped in the Mothership (and it made a cool sound effect too).
Vortex also has a cool sound effect.

Well you can't deny that it is good for the game. Having a whole matchup dependant on one spell isn't good. It made it so Protoss players could win games they had no business winning or lose games that they had completely won (neural).
It's only a real problem in WoL though. Eventually Zerg managed to counter it by being more careful with their BL (and that means it's only a problem for Protoss itself because it was their only way to win). With Tempest and the new Void Rays, Protoss don't need Vortex anymore.
Also a compromise situation (to keep Vortex, maybe at least let it have some occasional fun uses), is to keep Vortex but make it have a 3 second channeling/casting time (with an icon indicator and/or a sound to warn it's coming), kind of like Nukes and Nydus.

LoL is big in China also. But Dota is still the most popular MOBA in China.
