In his blog on TeamLiquid, Cloud has announced that he will retire from SC2.

Even though right now is the weirdest time to do something like this I decided I will quit being a progamer and leave eSports and gaming alltogether. This might sound weird to some people since I've been playing really well towards the end of Wings of Liberty and HotS looks like a more balanced and fun game to play. It means much to take such a big decision and even though I'm really busy at the moment I feel I owe the amazing TeamLiquid community an explaination and a final thread....

Has he ever fulfilled his dream of beating Goody?

I will miss you Cloud, you were one of the most straight up players and you were never holding back your opinion. I respect that a lot.

Never liked the guy and he never shined although everyone always had good things to say about him..

For sure a decent sc2 player, but not good enough to play it professionally imo. Gl with life and all!

Shame, it was nice to have someone always saying it like he saw it rather than the super politically correct bullshit some progamers keep spouting every fucking chance they get.

He was also the only relevant terran whiner personality out there(avilo dont count). Meanwhile Zerg and Protoss do have more than enough of whiners.

I know very well within myself I could stand above any non korean progamer if I put enough dedication into it, but what kept me from doing so in Starcraft2 was the fact I don't enjoy playing this game at all.

To paraphrase: "I know have the potential to be better than anyone(non-Korean) in the world, but I didn't like the game, so I quit"

It is close to blaming SC2 for why he didn't do well. He leaves it subjective by saying that he didn't "enjoy" the game, but he is still heaping the blame on SC2 rather than himself.

Didn't follow him too much, but whenever his name came up he seemed to always have a negative impact on the community with his poor attitude. Not a huge loss IMO, but good luck to him regardless.

Well you are reading it like you want to read it. I read it more like "I didn't enjoy the game so I didn't put as much time/effort into it as required to excel", which is basically what his whole blog is about, how he loved BW and therefor he was putting a lot more effort into developing as a player.

This is probably for the better. He never seemed to bring a lot of positive things to the table - I clearly remember when he casted with Thorzian at homestory, man ...

I do wish him the best of luck in his life, though.

This is for the best. I have seen many times about how he doesn't like SC2 and doesn't think it's a good game but he played it for his own reasons. I was wondering back then how could you force yourself to do that? The difference in his play and the player who play with passion and enjoy the game such as Life show through their game. I don't need to say which is more fun to watch.

I feel the same way. As Steve Jobs said here, you have to love what you do to do a great job. Yet I can say I really tried my best to like SC2 and this experience gave me a lot, so I am happy I did it even though I was very doubtful about SC2 from the beginning.

I think he will be happier without SC2. While many people dislike him for his exaggerated ramblings and hate comments, I can tell you that his heart is in the right place. While he is probably one of the weirdest people I have met in eSport, he is also one of the few where I can confidently say that he is a good person

Good luck with poker, I hope you can keep your calm my friend :D

I know this very well right now, still happy I did it, and I believe I did well considering my passion for the game was not there all this time. I am most proud of my growth as a person in the last 3 years and especially the last months and that could have never happened without my progaming experience.

Good riddens to be honest. Decent player but his narcistic tendencies were just annoying, constantly saying crap etc. about the game. I can agree the game sucks at some points but don't whine about it as a progamer.
He overrates his own skill by quite a bit as well imo..

Idra gets money from drawing in viewers for his sponsors, his stream etc. Why quit when you earn good money.
But obviously, not enough people care about Cloud, that this would be possible for him. So it's a dead end.

Funny that some say he's a fucking asshole and other say he's a nice guy, right next to each other. Hardly anything in between.

I don't think anyone will argue that Cloud didn't have a whole lot of character. Ever since he moved back to Italy I think some of us expected him to eventually quit. It wasn't a secret he didn't enjoy sc2 all that much. Love him or hate him, he was a noteworthy player in the EU community for a long long time.

... that's a terrible mentality

How so?

To paraphrase: "I know have the potential to be better than anyone(non-Korean) in the world, but I didn't like the game, so I quit"

It is close to blaming SC2 for why he didn't do well. He leaves it subjective by saying that he didn't "enjoy" the game, but he is still heaping the blame on SC2 rather than himself.

Well you are reading it like you want to read it. I read it more like "I didn't enjoy the game so I didn't put as much time/effort into it as required to excel", which is basically what his whole blog is about, how he loved BW and therefor he was putting a lot more effort into developing as a player.

We all can read what we want to read, that is why it is call interpretation and we have the phrase “reading between the lines”. But the attitude that “I didn’t do well because the game wasn’t as good as BW, that I loved”, while also claiming to be capable of being one of the best in the world, is a little hard to swallow. With players like Flash coming into the scene, who would accept the challenge of becoming the best at any RTS you put in front of them and Nanwai, who just wants to become the best no matter what, I have grown tired of people blaming SC2 for their woes.

bleh, the little i do know of him was from homestory and his feud with Goody. About his skill level and passion for the game. Dont really care. Anybody that is getting stomped in sc2 would say the same thing, "dont have passion for the game etc etc".

well adios.

Everyone who followed the german scene know him and what I know from him was always entertaining.
Sometimes in bad ways, sometimes in good ways.
None the less, due to all this negativity, i felt obligated to post that I will miss him.

Good luck in your future endavors.

I'll be waiting for Idra's retirement announcement then.

I think that IdrA - actually - would make pretty good coach. It's maybe a long shot but he seems to be very analytical about the game, has the best background among foreigners for that kind of job plus he nerve issues wouldn't be his issues.

I saw Cloud as a guy who wasn't afraid to say how hard it was to play as a foreigner terran in 2012. Calling it how he sees it is the way to go, so many pros give statements where they don't want to piss anyone off and everybody's tired of those.

Never stops surprising me to see all this negativity of people jumping in on someone they barely know because of one or two posts they read that they didn't like. Why do you feel the need to share "I never liked him but gl" in a retirement thread? It boggles the mind.

Shame to see you go, Carlo. Good luck with Poker. I eagerly await your bad beat stories.

hahaha more like he watched the Flash v Innovation matches... and realized a foreigner will never win a single TvT ever again, as there is not a single foreigner alive who can match the APM/multitasking of Flash/Innovation.

You are right, but he also admits that - in his point of view - his lack of motivation and therefore lack of effort was the only factor that kept him from being a top player, since - apparently to him - his talent was out of question.

There are plenty of people who try to - at least partially - blame their lack of success to factors that were out of their control, personal issues and whatnot. It is refreshing to see somebody who takes the blame solely on himself.

Seriously, the nerve of people not liking him!

It's as if he made a very controversial statement and instead of backing it up with actions he conveniently finds better opportunities.
It's as if he insulted a whole lot of people.
It's as if he referred to his fans that disagreed as "nobodies".

I seriously don't understand how people think Cloud is a saint in this regard. He had some rather unsavory opinions and pissed a lot of people off. He won't be missed by some, he will be missed by others. Can't always please everyone especially with the attitude he had.

Weell, that's not really solely on himself. When you say you failed to become passionate about the game, you're deflecting the issue onto the game, at least partially. :p Or am I completely wrong?

Anyway good luck in whatever you do, Cloud. I wasn't really a fan in any way imagineable, and the negative posts in this thread shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone, but live and let live I guess.

Possibly but it's a very common perception among top players. If you don't think you have it in you to be better than your competition then it would make the whole thing kind of pointless.

Other progamers don't answer this kind of stuff but it can piss you off when random people just come and make statements about stuff they know nothing about. And that's also what I expressed at the end of my blog. It's fine though, doing this you learn the haters are just more vocal, and you either pull a completely politically correct persona or you ignore them. The other option is not giving a fuck, but that's not as easy to market right now, and that's why most progamers choose the other two options.

Sounds like this guy had his share of haters. I started reading some of the post and I think he was coming from the same place as most of us (nerd uses game as form of escape)

IDK who he is but people posting troll rage twitter comments about him doesn't seem like u can blame the guy too much..

Its never good to see a player leave the scene, althought he didnt get much in regards to placement in premier tournys he was still a somewhat solid terran and streamer.

Its a shame you didn't want to give HOTS a shot with Terran. With Widow mines, Ravens and Ferarri-vacs your good mechanics would have shone through and perhaps you could've exceeded your WoL results.

Always enjoyed you at HSC - especially those casts with Fuzer.
I wish you luck with whatever you plan on doing post-esports. Hopefully we get to see you doing a cameo appearance on the ladder sometime.

To all the people who get rubbed the wrong way by some tweets: grow a spine! Cloud isn't afraid to speak his mind, for better or for worse. A large portion of the Starcraft community can be such politically correct bleeding hearts.. I respect a person who can say a controversial statement in the public eye. Its the people who denounce it purely on the grounds that they disagee that piss me off.

Dude have you saw MLG? Widow Mines are a joke.

It's not true, whether or not Jobs said it. You do not have to love what you do to do a great job. I went to school with plenty of people who did not like school a tremendous amount but were among the best students in the nation, and I now work with professionals who are the very best in their respective fields, and very, very few of them loves what he or she does. You can be better than just about everyone simply by having and cultivating an outstanding work ethic and discipline, assuming you're at least moderately talented. Do you think all of the KESPA players who are dedicating 12 hours a day to SCII love SCII? That's preposterous. I'm sure plenty of foreign players love SCII and would still be destroyed by the current KESPA b-team (which is in fact what happened when MLG ran the MVP invitational or whatever it was called). The hardworking professional player will almost always beat the passionate (but comparatively lazy) player. In every sport this is the way it works. SCII is no exception.

As a general matter, you will be much more successful in life if you're able to work extremely hard at even the things you don't like doing. If you're the type of person who can only work hard at something when you're "passionate" about it, good luck with that.

I note that whatever you do next it's hard to imagine it won't require a great deal more time and effort than you put into SCII and will likely be extraordinarily more dull. On the bright side, at least you'll be able to make enough money to survive on.

I can't say I didn't see this coming to be honest considering how ClouD's results have been unimpressive for the last few months, but it's still almost never a good thing for someone to leave the scene, especially if they're a fairly well known player like ClouD.

Cloud doesn't sound arrogant to me at all actually... why is everyone saying this?

Clearly just a very competitive guy who didn't actually like sc2 all that much... i kinda get him tbh, sc2 ain't that great and there is no other game for competitive rts players...

Damn, it's sad there's so many people who dislike you soley because you speak your mind and there's some ridiculous taboo surrounding balance on TL. It was obvious to anyone in masters or above that the game was imbalanced for a while and that Terran took disproportionate amounts of effort and skill compared to the other 2 races. HotS is working to fix that but still don't expect to see any foreign Terrans making a mark on the scene. I don't blame him for retiring, I wouldn't be slaving away at this game either if I was beginning my 20s, with tons of other opportunities available to me. GL in the future ClouD, it was always nice to have a pro come give his input on TL.

Very understandable that he never rly liked SC2 after starting out with BW tho...

He wrote at me like a dick, I responded in the exact same manner.

You're forgetting the part where he replied to a post you wrote like a dick in the first place.

I still believe in what I said. If protoss had an higher skill ceiling in WoL in fact great players like Grubby or Titan would have shined so much more, and many other protoss players would have won less. I expected SC2 would have been a much better game but it was designed in a way that never met the standards of the old BW and WC3 players. Some adapted and some, like me, didn't. It's not a coincidence most of the great players from BW aren't playing anymore (only Ret comes to mind, and he was most likely the best non korean player ever towards the end of Starcraft). It takes a whole different skillset to play SC2 and old school players have shown several time that they could improve a lot on this.
Honestly I am not really convinced answering to people I don't know on an internet forum is the best way to spend my time, but since you have put a lot of effort in disliking me many times on this forum I thought I owed you some attention (pretty twisted thinking process, isn't it?).
When I did say stuff like that on twitter though I feel like I was being a bit of a jerk, because every time I got hate comments from people I don't know I thought it was really funny that somebody, somewhere, can get angry over trivial stuff like a troll tweet. In many instances I just came home, was bored, and posted some flame bait just to see how much people would get upset over such a trivial thing.
Either way, I don't know you but I wish you the best, it feels we have some kind of relationship right now.

Anyone who reads the statement can honestly see a lot of that in there. I don't want to sully his goodbye with attacks, but I cringed at a lot of those moments. It's like when I saw NoNy go, I was very sad (he was/is a baller and he is one of the reasons I still consider Philosophy a viable degree for me, I love that field of study, because of his well thought out blogs. They showed a strong ability to think), but what made me feel like he is gonna be fine was because his statement was honest. Yes, ClouD has not been incredibly relevant, but love for something does have a factor. The guy is a community member, he is a dick to people sometimes, but hey he is who he is. I'll be honest that if any professional doesn't love the field they are in, they will reminisce to other parts in their lives that they believed were better and make those times into golden ages. I'm not saying that is what ClouD has done here, but I can see a lot "the grass was greener" going on in here. Is it bullshit? Yeah to a large extent it is, but let's not forget that this is a personal thing and not the "objective" truth the way a collective body sees it.

Hey Cloud
My question might be slightly offensive to you, but it really isn't meant as any kind of troll or irony - I just want a bit more selfreflection from your part.

I remember when I watched you play in the earlier stages of sc2 (say first 6-9 months post-release). It semed that you quite consistently would have trouble spending your money. Often times you would havel like 3k unspent or something ridiclous like that (admittely it wasn't over a huge sample size, but I think I watched like 5 games in a row of you I noticed very high average unspent ressources). This surprised me because I knew you were a BW gamer and I would expect former BW games to at least get the macro thing right. Later on, you improved your macro and i didn't notice anything late 2011-.

But I would like to ask you why you had trouble with macro back then? How much did you practice early post release (like average game per day?). Or do you think I am totally wrong with my claim that your macro wasn't very good?

It's a legit question and it's something I found very odd from my part aswell. I reflected on it and realized that it happened for 2 reasons. First I was so used to the Protoss building times back in Brood War that I would actually slip consinstently and remember to produce only within SC1 timings. I worked hard on this and eventually I got used to the SC2 terran timings, which are a lot faster. The second reason was that the game was new to me and I wasn't playing a lot, and good mechanics only come with lots of practice. I just had overall a very bad mentality and it took me a few months too long before adjusting my macro, but eventually I was able to fix this.

Telling how good you could have been, should you have cared is just weak.

I could also say: "I could have beaten every korean at Starcraft - but I simply wasn't interested, I rather studied got a wife and enjoy my life now, earning enough to see the world."

But wouldn't that be very arrogant even if true?

Later, Cloud. It was fun watching you play bw back in years gone by. I don't entirely agree with your assessment of sc2, but bw will always be the best game ever made.

yeah it's arrogant but it's the right mentality

Don't read too much in what I said. I just wrote how I felt about it and I wasn't bragging, but just explaining my feelings between playing SC1 and SC2 and how this didn't make me enjoy the second game. If what I said is true or not doesn't matter because in the end only facts matter, and that's also a good reason to never give words like this too much weight. What I wanted to underline were my feelings towards the game and the way they changed my approach when I became a professional player in SC2.
I was also very negative in the beginning of my SC2 career and playing this game helped me realize how important is to be positive and optimistic towards yourself and the others. This is one of the biggest changes I had in my life. I understand some people just saw some negativity some time ago but I was able to change this part of me in the last months and I'm really happy about it. In the end I consider my career good but not brilliant at all, and it proved to be way better as a life experience than as a job. I'm totally fine with this and I'm a bit confused at the people trying to say I wasn't among the top SC2 progamers when I never thought I was in the first place.

For me, this was actually a great post to read... I feel like I understand this story, even if I was never that good at SC and BW... Good luck with everything Cloud... Thanks for the games I saw and the story ending here... I appreciated it...

I'm having trouble finding major tournament achievements. Or did no one update his wins? If this is all, then sorry, he was never a top foreigner, let alone world class.

I for one will miss your brutal honesty ClouD, good luck with whatever is coming next for you.

Did you ever consider trying your hand at more casting or other non-playing roles?

His reasons are honorable. You just can't force yourself to do something you don't enjoy, day in and day out.
Also, when you get into your mid-late 20s, you really have to work on your long-term future. Sadly, professional gaming isn't that future that goes beyonds your 20s (if that) except for very few people.

It's sad to see a long-time SC player go, but he's at a time where he needs to be concentrating on his life. Can't argue with that. Good luck, Cloud!

Definitely respect a progamer quitting because he doesn't have the passion. Despite what anyone says, I feel that it would be impossible to compare to the current top players who are able to put in 12 hours of practice a day just because they love playing the game so much,

Marvelous, his "career" since the end of WoL beta was pretty much like Biot's respiration. Number of his good results are close to nil. Moreover even Idra's whining/bm/bias regarding balance was more constructive than his.
Despite the fact it's very unlikely to happen, I'd love to see his future irl work boss' face after ClouD explains him that even though he screwed up some sort of task, he's still the best @ doin' it :D:D:D:D

Well for me its sad. He had a great enviroment in Germany (maybe in his years he cauld start learning some German would maybe help). From my point of view he had in his team a great Toss and Zerg to get his TvP and TvZ to a high level. So much options given to a player and not able to use it and I dont understand why. This just makes me sad but I hope Alternate will keep their support up and give new players at least the same chances

Him leaving the community, well I dont care much.

I nominate Goswser to take Clouds name because that is an annoying gamer tag to type. lol

Seriously though, I have huge respect for any foreign Terran but when you stop loving something its just good to let it go. I mean thats like living in hell isn't it, doing 12 hours a day of something you hated? I hope he can find something he really loves.

Personally, after seeing Flash and Bogus playing, I would have shit my pants as a Tier 3 foreign pro, there is no way I could ever reach that level unless I started at age 14 or something. No reason to continue as long as Koreans are coming here, taking all of our money. I could make more easily doing Magic cards, Poker, maybe joining a DoTA2 clan. Sorry off topic- just kinda getting into the heads of progamers ATM - its gotta feel bad right now.

I'll say this about ClouD, love him or hate him- he definitely stirs up a lot of passion on these forums. I personally love him, as he was a great BW player. I also like the competition he brought to the game of WOL. Maybe he wasn't winning GSL's, but no foreigner has, or is even putting much of a fight for that matter these days. Guess it was only a matter of time when the Kespa elephants transitioned over to SC2. Guess the good ol' days are over. You will be missed ClouD. Also, for all you haters out there... Don't really understand all the admiration for speaking his mind; it takes more guts to swallow your negative feelings- the former just requires disconnecting your brain from your mouth… or hands as the case may be.

Didn't really know much about him but I'm sure he provided me with an interesting match or two, so thanks for that and gl.

Its his candid nature that I respect. I disagree and think you're completely off the mark in thinking that swallowing your words and being politically correct at all times takes more guts than speaking your thoughts, however controversial they may be. "Swallowing negative feelings" is a terrible way to go about things and I have little respect for people who spout words in an effort to be PC or appease the majority. Its a dangerous type of thinking that suppresses rational thought.

Never liked players with an attitude like his. Seemed like the typical know-better personality.

Not only in regards to players but there were plenty occasions where Cloud talked shit about David Kim and how easy the job of his should be and how much better Cloud would be at it. Just ridiculous.

Well I guess turns out he didn't like the game all along, you know, one of those excuses that attempt to shine everything in a different light. If that's the case then don't compete for three years.

Just overall this has the general average angry online gamer vibe of "Yeah? Well fuck this, I didn't even try in the first place, and if I did I could easily be the best."

Disregarding best of luck in whatever you're going to do next - but players with this kind of attitude I will not miss.

Yup, some players and casters seem to jump on every chance to be PC and basically screaming "look at how great of a person I am guys everything in sc2 is great I need to work harder this time sorry for underperforming but my job is really hard". It is laughable.

You're putting a lot of negative spin on my post to support your opinion. Considering the various effects the things you say and do have is not "a dangerous type of thinking that suppresses rational thought"; it is rational thought. Whether you find a steam of thought narrative more entertaining and respect worthy or not.

Yup, some players and casters seem to jump on every chance to be PC and basically screaming "look at how great of a person I am guys everything in sc2 is great I need to work harder this time sorry for underperforming but my job is really hard". It is laughable.

Except for the fact that Cloud basically called out people who created the game saying he could do it better. He did that for just about anyone, when he lost to a player, much like what IdrA used to do, he would say it was luck. He called TLO a faggot at one point after losing at IIRC homestory cup. That attitude takes no strenght to keep up. All that is, is a wall put up to protect the ego. Then him being protected by BW vets when he was calling sc2 ezmode is pretty much people calling him out on bs and having other people who have always been particularly venomous towards sc2 protect him. I remember Cloud always saying how people were wrong and that he did have results that other pro players envied whenever a forum goer would call him out on that. Now in his blog he said he didn't have results that he obviously could have had since he could be the best non-korean if he had tried at all, that kind of change up is something you don't hear from pros, you don't hear that the game is mostly about luck or anything close to that; Cloud's attitude is upsetting, and him speaking his mind seems to be more about covering his butt from people who had called him out than it is anything to really look up to. That is what I got out of the blog. I absolutely don't hate the guy, and usually I love his blogs, but the more I look at it, the more upsetting reading that blog is.
