MLG just released brackets for Dallas on their website here.

As usual you can find more information about the qualifiers and players on Liquipedia.

The spots with 2 names listed are qualifiers that will be broadcast through the next week at MLG

Kind of weird we have some extra matches to go through before the RO32.

The slashes in the bracket in round 1 are because the North American matches are finishing next week so the winner of each match up will get those spots

Looks great, super excited for this.

I wonder how much HOTS Flash (other Kespa guys) will actually play before this, he said he hadn't played any really in his code A interview and with traveling to MLG after release I doubt he will get a lot of time.

Pretty good bracket imo. The stage is set for both early upsets and big time matchups later in the tournament.

Single elimination means this is gonna be extra painful. No open bracket and they have to fly out for only one shot at it. : (

I love MLG and I know the last MLG Dallas was killer on some of the players, but there has to be a happy middle ground.

Don't know if this was randomized, but it looks like they want Flash to stay in as long as possible - not a bad thing if it's the case

So, since these qualifiers have already been played, and you've made the brackets like this to avoid spoilers for the games you haven't cast yet, do the players themselves at least know who their 1st round opponents will be?

It seems like it would be unfair, if some of the players know their opponents the moment the brackets are announced, while the rest have to wait until they're revealed.

They didn't know who they were facing when they played the match.

I'm still very interested to see exactly how bad the games will be after no one except the IEM players will have been able to play/practice the actual game for two weeks.

Ah? So it's "herO", not "HerO". I see. I guess Liquid's HerO didn't qualify, ok.

Would be good, but to be honest I doubt Life cares much whether he faces IdrA or Minigun, seeing how we won't be able to train the matchups anyway. The good thing is that there are only NA players left to be announced and all of the players who are facing an undetermined NA opponent should just be glad they don't have to play a Korean and be happy with what they got.

Of course it happened, the beta is down and no one can play anymore. All the games already happened. No, you can't see the results because MLG hasn't broadcasted the matches yet, will happen this week.

99% sure they have played, in their match history I saw 1 game played (only 1, don't know if they hid the others? warm up? idk), but official results wont be up til next week's broadcast

Yes, we are in the process of reaching out to Players like Life, Thorzain, and Bomber to let them know of their Round 1 opponents.

Oh wow. Minigun vs. Life. That could be huge. And with how strong Skytoss can be against zerg, it wouldn't be impossible. But first he needs to beat Idra and hopefully keep his sickness at bay while in Dallas.

It's okay my reaction was pretty similar.

Will we get a map pool soon? I don't have high hopes but it would be nice to see anyway.

31 matches over three days and two streams should be eminently doable, even as BO5s. So yeah, expect it for non subscribers.

Best case scenario: Life vs. Flash grand finals. I'm really worried for Life, though - Zerg's in (kind of - put down your pitchforks) a tough spot, and Polt's been practising his ass off in HoTS.

Every single match will be streamed across Red and Blue in free 720p. We will have a moderate upgrade package available for $9.99 that will have 1080p, emoticons, etc. Yes it is not as much as you got before but it truly is the best way to directly support the event.

I hope you guys enjoy the ungated streams and free HD Should be a sick event.

LOL wouldn't be surprised if these brackets were fixed for max viewers. Flash and Parting are essentially guaranteed to meet in Ro8 and one will make the semis for sure. An they put polt close enough to stephano for a famous rematch.

Sad to see Jjakji vs MKP sooo early =(

We are working VERY hard to minimize downtime for this event. Both streams will have on deck stations where players will be queued up ready to roll when a match ends. Also, we know every single match up already, so we plan to have some great assets ready to roll.

We're expecting a lot of ourselves for this event, and we're very excited to share with you guys.

You know, a lot of people bitched about no open bracket, but this bracket is stacked. Polt/Life in the Ro16 would be amazing. Would love to see HotS Polt take on the best WoL Zerg currently. Him and Creator should be a fun rematch too if Creator gets to practice with HotS some more. He pretty much did five out of six cheeses in the series he lost to Polt

If you mean about the implication that it was rigged, yeah I'm joking, that'd be stupid, they wouldn't rig that.

It's mainly just annoying because Flash will probably just get straight through to the quarter/semifinals off of it, and people will go on and on and on about how he's the greatest thing ever, when he beat such terrors like... Bly and Ret (where as if almost any other korean did it nobody would care). While elsewhere in the bracket we have clusters like (Life vs. ?) vs. (Polt vs. Creator) and (MKP vs. Jjakji) vs. (Seed vs. Rain)...

At least we have Flash vs. PartinG potentially!

Wow, brackets look super stacked. Potential match-ups are Polt vs Life, Polt vs Stephano, Flash vs PartinG, and MKP/jjakji vs Seed/Rain. I think Polt has a good chance of making it to the finals provided he can beat Life, which should be on more even footing in HotS and with Life not being an invincible monster anymore while Polt improved.

I didn't give that any consideration but you're right, that is kind of nice.

Wait what. You mean they actually stream games? Here's me thinking they just periodically update the results so they come in at a more reasonable rate.

Also that bracket is crazy stacked. By the end of round two only one of Seed, jjakji, MKP and Rain will still be in the tournament.

Anyone else think Blizzard is kinda ruining this MLG by closing the beta? Most of the Koreans are gonna have like 1 day to practice HotS before this. There's really no technical reason to be closing the beta this early, they should just close it on March 11th.
Didn't Flash say in his Code A interview that he hasn't even touched HotS yet?

I would agree with that list completely if it was WoL. I think right now as HotS is Zerg is struggling way too much for those results to hold up. I think a Terran wins it, maybe Flash?

Life vs Leenock in Grand Finals of MLG once again :D Seriously, I think with the tournament being HotS there is room for huge upsets, like the level of Life going home at the first round or so.

I'm sure there are reasons, technical or otherwise, they wouldn't just go "LOL WE CLOSE BETA NAO xDD" for no reason but to annoy pros and casuals alike.

Yes, Flash said two days ago he hadn't played a single game and would prefer not to attend at all if it was up to him.

You just have to see it as a fun exhibition tournament and not a serious competitition, that's how I got over the IEM switch to HotS, it's the same with some players only having a week or two of HotS practice because they committed to WoL vs others who weren't ambitious in WoL anymore and got a huge headstart.

It'll be incredibly lopsided in terms of preparation but most if not all Koreans should still be able to overcome that deficit through sheer skill.

At least once you get to top 8, the matches should be quite good no matter who plays in them.

I mean, this is something Blizzard does every time before release...this should have easily been foreseen by MLG, but at the same time, because of this, there will be some really great matches. Everyone will be trying to figure out what works well and how to counter this or that. It is going to be brilliant!

I feel bad for idra though =( hope he does well! Glad to see herO of CJ Entus outside of Korea!

I don't see any explanation anywhere for the following:

How were the brackets decided?

I agree, some round 1 matches seem crazy stacked. Was this just random?

Polt to take it. I truly think he's the best Hots terran at the moment and elephants didn't practice hots so i don't see them doing really well.

Flash to stomp face and win....

Oh wait, its HoTS, anyone can take it. I expect big things from Mvp though, he's been able to just focus on hots while he heals his wrists. Mvp is always a great player and many think Terran is the strongest race in Hots right now. Go Mvp!!

So is it going to be Bo3 until the Ro8, which then becomes Bo5, and Bo7 in the finals? Being single-elimination, a Bo3 in the Ro32 is pretty unforgiving because of how easy it is to be knocked out in two games. Without even a loser's bracket, comebacks are impossible.

no it's Bo5 all the way, and then Bo7 in finals

UGH: Hero vs MC, Feast vs MVP, Polt vs Creator, Seed vs Rain etc etc.. OMG.

I feel like Flash has relatively easy route to Ro8. Parting should be the one advancing there, so Flash vs Parting could be tough for both.

Thanks for confirming, it would be ridiculous if MLG decided to do a Bo3 in the Ro32, but a Bo5 makes things so much more fair.

I think MarineKing got a tough but reasonable bracket. Definitely easier ones but not impossible. Top left quarter is bracket of death imo. Polt Creator Life all right there

He also has two GM HotS accounts. Was something like 93-13 on his TSLPolt account, then he's currently on a new one that's something around 123-22. It usually takes him five minutes to find a game when he streams.

Creator is still a tough first round opponent, but Life/Polt would be amazing.

maybe but MKP is statistically the better TvT player. I'd be happy for jjakji, though. Would kind of suck to have his first MLG be 1 series. Also has anyone else noticed that this would have been another MKP vs DRG MLG rematch had DRG beaten jjakji?

I wish. T_T

Poor Jjakji, always those TvTs, now that Zerg is eminently beatable for him once again, he gets the matchup he never did well in (apart from that one IPL tournament of champions where he only one-base all-inned).

One Part of the bracket has Stephano, Last, QXC, Thorzain, while another part has MKP, Jjakji, Seed, Rain. Heh. Seems like Stephano got the best end of the stick there, though if Last has been playing HotS then I expect him to have some pretty solid builds prepared so he could just as easily advance there. Flash also got a really easy part of the bracket, relatively speaking of course.

Can't wait.

Poor Kespa players, if it is really true that no one touched HotS and now they can't even train it. Its not just a saying that WoL style doesn't work in HotS, especially against Zerg you are doomed, but without HotS experience you are more then doomed as Zerg.
Guess Polt has this then or a reincarnation of Fruit Dealer.

Oh boy, March Madness Brackets already! MLG should really consider trying to get people to make their own brackets online ala NCAA, and give prizes for those who get the bracket correct (or most correct). It would be a great way to get hype

There s so much more hype with a single elimination bracket and all matches streamed. WP for that MLG.
Players will have their life at stake at every game really really exciting, 2011 style. Also straightforward format, better to drag the casual viewers in.
No calculation about who get first place in his pool, who goes into LB who has a better chance because he avoids his weakest MU in LB etc.
and no constant f5 on liquipedia...
Just basic instincts. I like it.

As one of the people who "bitched" about no open bracket, isn't every MLG bracket pretty much stacked? We always end up with an amazing championship bracket and lots of great players playing, with usually a few people greatly exceeding expectations.

That said, this should be a good event, just wish it had an open bracket too. I also think we're going to see some really short games meaning Zerg will greatly under perform at this event, and Terran will dominate. Will be fun.

Huge amount of skill, garnished with a few foreigners. I expect that none of them reaches the Ro8. This tournament will certainly show aspects of the game which may be imbalanced, helping to make Blizz the game better for all of us.

9.5/10 for MLG, awesome start for hots indeed!

I dont think it means much to have very talented players like Flash, Life, Rain, herO in this tournament if they havent gotten any time practicing HotS yet. Some foreigner who has spent hundreds of ours of HotS streaming will probably take it.

Is it double Elim?

Single elimination this time. Bo5 up until the finals though, so players won't be eliminated in a Bo3.

Props to MLG for going single elimination bo5 and streaming all the matches, that's how you build hype from A to Z. With double-elimination, there are just way too many matches, in bo3, and most of them are not streamed and not that important in the early rounds. And it's harder to follow, and the rules for the grand final are always weird. Plus it takes more time and watching a sc2 event consumes enough time already. Now with single elimination all the players will start from 0 and will have to win 3 maps, that's fair.

No way. The foreigners will get slaughtered with basic pressure when they show they have more experience in HotS. No amount of streaming is gonna save you when you play against somebody who has better mechanics and game sense.

Can the OP use this updated bracket? We changed Hero to CJ Hero so people are not confused over and over.

(not sure who the proper person to ask for this change, thank you for any help)

HerO and herO need to have a showmatch, and the winner gets to change their name to SuperherO.

He should win with his mechanics alone. But I'm slightly worried, with the beta now closed and having to play in Ro24 code A andhis PL schedule he could get caught off guard a lot by HotS strategies, I'm assuming he is going to study what little vods of HotS matches are available at least. But if I was Bly I'd come out swinging with some cheesy as fuck brand new HotS strats.

I can see flash trying to go for a macro game with Bio/tank. And Bly will build Vipers and take the games. Flash is not the type that likes to copy, so I assume he will do WoL fundamental training, which doesn't work against Zerg once they hit hive or Protoss right from the start.

Awesome bracket! Cant wait for the rest of those qualifiers to finish.

My top 4 prediction (aka winners of each group):
Top-Left: (T)Polt
Bottom-Left: (T)Bomber
Top-Right: (Z)Sen
Bottom-Right: (T)INnoVation

Polt will win the whole thing, doe.
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

So what about the showdown matches that haven't been played yet ? Since there is no beta how is MLG gonna be dealing with those matches?

or have they already been played and they will just cast the replays ?

Everything was cast from replays. I wonder if they had to record the casts though with the beta down, or can they still run the replays somehow?

Just like all the other previous showdown matches, the final week will be broadcasts of replays with commentary. At least the event will be live matches.

Yah, Parting could win that group with his feet.

Either Parting or any Terran will win the whole thing.

I think we might get a few foreigner upsets, but SC2 will always be Korean dominated, and I doubt HotS will be an outlier. Korean have always practiced better, studied the game better and know the game better, and a few misplays here and there might catch a Korean off-guard, but they will probably recuperate and comeback. I know Sen has been practicing hard for HotS and all, but PartinG probably will win either way.

Agreed. When Rain seemed unstoppable, and not many counted on MVP taking him, MVP managed to stop him and advance to the finals.

Then next two seasons, when everyone started hyping MVP, he started losing!

I do hope MVP takes the next GSL, he needs his GSL 5 time champion trophy before retiring.

TeamLiquidESPORTS, please have the graphic in the OP updated whenever possible! MLGAdam's image on page 10 clarifies herO's identity, and the results of the last remaining showdowns such as Goswser qualifying to face Bomber also ought to be reflected. Thank you for your hard work!

Goswser to beat Bomber, TaeJa, MC, Life and FlaSh to take home the championship. Crowd goes insane.

At home, people flip tables, slit their wrists, jump into the street, slam their keyboards through their monitors, spam and flame the shit out of eachother TL and Reddit to the point where the traffic becomes too much to handle... Riots, vandalism and general chaos ensue. People go on murderous rampages and mass suicides, leading to most governments banning StarCraft 2 ESPORTS for being too dangerous. RIP.

Honestly feel like this could be Polt's tournament. Still I wish it wasn't single elimination. I mean, if you look at round 1, it is possible that insanely good players like life, plot, creator, flash, etc. could have flown from Korea to Dallas to get eliminated in three games.

What MLG should do is pay only for the flight there and then have a losers bracket where you need to win a round to get your flight home.

What MLG should do is pay only for the flight there and then have a losers bracket where you need to win a round to get your flight home.

Why not kick it up a notch and loser gets their passport taken from them for a week?

Nah, to retrieve your passport, you need to progress though a torture chamber and then a series of death traps in a winding maze of a room. At the end of an exhausting maze where you are deprived of water, food and fresh air, you face Flash in BW to determine whether you can leave the country alive.

Good luck to MLG. I highly doubt you will be able to keep the promise of "minimize downtime". Lets hope you've hired an army of interviewers that wont ask the same questions every time a player appears on the stage and also have plans like having extra commentators talk about the tournament either from a stageside couch or out in the crowd. Also, lets not do something like only show koreans/KESPA players on the main stage. Show the foreigners some love too! All in all, GLHF hope it's a successful event both online and live in Dallas.

This. Now IEM WC not doing it correct, even with the Beta issue they should have better coverage. As long as there is enough streams to ensure the possibility of watching any match eveyrthing is fine.

I am with this man 100%, down time is not acceptable and anything that needs to be changed to fix the issue must be done. Removing the open bracket from the event(not on site, but held prior the event) is the first step toward what is needed. The removal of the losers bracket the correct step to fixing the production issues and keeping things moving at a brisk pace.

The players complaining about being knocked out in the first round need to get passed it. You can get knocked out in the first round of the Olympics too, and they only happen every 4 years. The NFL in the play offs is a best of one. No one said this was going to be easy or not be high risk.

I think that a tournament should make some effort to ensure the most money goes to the best players, though. From Wikipedia:
In a random knockout tournament (single-elimination without any seeding), awarding the second place to the loser of the final is unjustified: any of the competitors knocked out by the tournament winner might have been the second strongest one, but they never got the chance to play against the losing finalist. In general, it is only fair to use a single-elimination tournament to determine first place. To fairly determine lower places requires some form of round-robin in which each player/team gets the opportunity to face every other player/team.
Also, if the competitors' performance is variable, that is, it depends on a small, varying factor in addition to the actual strength of the competitors, then not only will it become less likely that the strongest competitor actually wins the tournament, in addition the seeding done by the tournament organizers will play a major part in deciding the winner. As a random factor is always present in a real world competition, this might easily cause accusations of unfairness.
Even if this is just an introductory HotS event, showings of skill should be rewarded fairly.

Just bought a pretty neat Android TV device (jellybean 4.1, dual core, 1gb RAM, dedicated GPU- $40) for this tourney, to watch streams on my 54" LED TV, instead of using my laptop. I'll let everyone know how it looks- these little micropc's could be huge in the future of esports.
