It is unclear what this will mean for the IPL, but IGN is a fairly well established giant.
That it was purchased for substantially more worries me about its business in general and that whoever will pick it up may make massive cuts.
"Unable to find a buyer, News Corp. expecting to sell gaming and entertainment sites for around $100 million.
IGN is going up for auction, according to a Wall Street Journal report. After a year of fruitless talks with potential bidders, parent company News Corp. is working with investment bank Allen & Co. to auction off the group of entertainment and video game websites.
News Corp purchased IGN in 2005 for $650 million. Last year, the company also acquired online gaming network UGO and folded its properties (including 1Up.com) into its one-time rival. IGN has also sold a handful of businesses in recent years, including Rotten Tomatoes, Direct2Drive, and GameSpy Technologies. The Wall Street Journal (another News Corp. publication) reports that IGN is expected to sell for about $100 million now.
The paper reports that a number of companies have expressed "at least some interest" in picking up IGN, including Break Media and SAY Media. Recent turnover in IGN management, including president Roy Bahat and News Corp. chief digital officer Jon Miller, was said to have hampered the sales process.
GamesIndustry International contacted IGN for comment, but was referred to a News Corp. representative. This story will be updated should they respond."

Wait IGN was purchased in 2005 for $650 million and is up for sale for $100mill now? Have they really done that bad as a business overall? Hoping I'm just reading that wrong or something.

This is purely speculation but I feel the internet is the cause. What do I mean? Well I think people have so much freedom with how they investigate games before they purchase them now that just wasn't available 10-15 years ago when companies similar to IGN thrived. You can use youtube to watch gameplay, reviews, first impressions, talk shows, let's plays, etc. Then you have fansites and forums much like teamliquid, etc. Companies like IGN have a lot more competition and have a lot less power over representing the gaming community now. Competition also is popping up quite rapidly thanks to the relative ease of creating a website today.

I think this is the closest to an answer we can get without delving too hard into the business of gaming websites. IGN is no longer a monopoly in the world, there are literally thousands of gaming websites just like IGN who offer similar services. IGN is only really different from the others in being more respected, established and wealthier (IPL is a unique venture amongst videogame websites I think).

I have 3k, but we are a little short.

Sales of console hardware and game software are FAR down from their ~2006-07 peaks with Wii and DS. If it wasn't for CoD the HD consoles wouldn't be doing so well either. It makes sense that the value of coverage of games is correspondingly down. Also we know what the hardware is capable of now, so it's hard to get excited about new games being better when they could have been made 5 years ago the same. IGN lives on hype and coverage and previews.

pretty much. I remember when i use to use gamespot and IGN to check out up coming games and reviews. Not so much anymore.
Also, to people who are saying they bought it for 650 mil and now selling 100 and wondering why; you should take note that they sold gamespy, rotten tomato, and other brands before this. the 650 mil included the purchasing of those sites. the 100 mil is just IGN. It probably still lost alot of value, just not the 650m to 100m the articles states.

If EG decides to drop Huk and Stephano they would be able to buy IGN a million times over.

Hmm, IGN must pissed off some companies by giving them some shit review score, ... oh wait, I think the game company themselves are all closing.
It's not surprising that hardcore gamers are decreasing, I don't know the reason but I think I only play 2-3 xbox game and 1-2 PS games per year now, no need to mention my Wii has been in the shelf for at least 2 years. Even have no motivation to buy a ps vita coz I dont know what to play on it. Back in ten years I was a really hardcore gamer and spend like 75% of my spare time on games. I dont know why but I am so sick of nowadays games and there are so few worthy games to play I guess.

The $650 million included Rotten Tomatoes, Direct2Drive, and GameSpy Technologies as far as I can tell since they were part of IGN back then and those have alerady been sold, that explains some of the reson for the huge drop.

on a serious note, this is certainly worrying for IPL. They aren't exactly profitable so to whomever buys them, if they aren't familiar with esports, they could be cut very easily.

If im reading it correctly, it says IGN was bought as a package for 650m that included Rotten Tomatoes, Direct2Drive, and GameSpy Technologies. They have since sold it off and now just the IGN we know remains and they want to sell that for 100m.
Seems fair enough!
|
I'm not really worried for IGN. It'll probably just be a change of ownership, it's not like the company is dissolving. If Kraft were to sell Nabisco I wouldn't expect there to suddenly be an oreo cookie crisis across the world.
|
i reckon the drop in price is cos of all the subs that they've already sold off

Would love to see what the $100 million evaluation is based on, ie. what kinds of sales they do and assets.
I think we will see it being liquidated for far less.

Since IGN was bought when they owned Rotten Tomatoes, Direct2Drive, and Gamespy for 650 million.
The IGN value probably fell but you have to exclude the value of those three business as well. Rotten Tomatoes sold to Flixster who was sold to Warner Bros, D2D sold to Gamefly, Gamespy sold to Glu Mobile.
WSJ Article has a bit more detail not much than the gamesindustry.biz artile: http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20121015-712650.html It's still a large drop in value...

I can't imagine Direct2Drive or GameSpy selling for much. GameSpy things were such a friggin' pain in the ass, and Direct2Drive is totally useless when compared to Steam. And this is coming from someone who has utilized around $300 in Direct2Drive before due to tournament prize winnings (don't get me wrong, it worked absolutely fine, and the games were priced about right, it's just steam is SOOOO much better).
I wonder how much Rotten Tomatoes sold for. I would imagine it has the most value.

That entire post is much worse than this one.
And another thing, IGN hasn't been sold yet, and even when it does, it might not change anything. So dont worry so much...

650 million to 100 million equals "What the hell is going on with IGN?"

Can somebody explain this to me? Is IGN a whole thing included RT, D2D, gamespy,.... and it was sold off bit by bit over the year, now they only have $100 million piece of business left?

That doesn't mean the bits they sold off were worth $550mil, just that the bits left are now considered to be worth $100m. It wouldn't surprise me if News Corp make a big loss overall.
Apparently they own Askmen, Gamespy (website), IGN and some other sites.

they bought it for 600 million when 3-4 other subs were with it, they sold those other comppanies since thus why ign is only oging for 100 mil

$100 mil? Worth $2 million tops. Where is their revenue coming from exactly? Tiny dollars from ads?
IGN is one of many "we don't make money" internet websites out there that somehow want to value them high because, oddly enough, someone is dumb enough to think they might be worth $100 million if that's what they announce. It's a hysteria that will die in the next stock crash when people stop believing the hype and start asking "where's the profit?"

Thank you internet wunderkid investment extraordinaire cz. Now take your brilliant message to any interested party and let them know that you have to real scoop.
Its flagship gaming site IGN.com (along with GameSpy, FilePlanet, and TeamXbox) is the US's leading gaming network; IGN also operates lifestyle site AskMen.com. Together, its IGN sites attract more than 40 million unique monthly visitors globally (in the US, Australia, and Germany).
I'm sure what you meant to say was something like,
"I don't know much about IGN but I don't like the website. Easily attainable financial information on IGN that shows over 200 employees, some paid six figure salaries or higher. IGN offers an extensive selection of products over a dozen websites. I'm sure the 16 year old company has some means of income even though I'm just too lazy to look or think about it before i post"

I don't know what kind of traffic they get now, but in 2005 IGN was hugely popular. They operated one of the busiest message boards on the internet and actually made rather large dollars in ad revenue.

Come on guys, we can take like $400k in real money and just convert it into $50M in eSports money, give it to Scoots, let him match it with another $50M in dirty money, give Nazgul the web site, Scoots IPL, my players (see the bidding ware earlier in the thread between State and Illusion) can put in their $3.5k, which once again would be like $5M eSports dollars, so we could likely get the TeSPA guys on board, and run the entire IPL with that budget for a few years, my co-owner Chuckie from Google can run the network and servers, and I'll be the janitor, which in eSports is an important job, since we tend to have a few messes to clean up on occasion. Ha!

Gamespy was ass, I remember giving up on warcraft 2 multiplayer because it was so crap. Thank god for bnet 1.0, HUGE improvement. Oddly enough, bnet 2.0 proved to be worse then gamespy, at least gamespy had chat.

IPL is only a single part of IGN. This doesn't have much to do with SC2 aside from "IPL might go away if their buyer doesn't want to fund it anymore".

How did the value drop from 650m to 100m? I never felt any degrading vibes or anything from IGN, they seem to still be towards the top of the food chain in the media review site categories.

Why is this even in SC2, aside from IPL? IGN isn't just about SC2, you know. In fact, it mostly isn't about SC2. Even IPL isn't mostly about SC2 as well, come to think of it, unless you are saying that LoL is dying as well.

They definitely make more than 3 million a year. They were once a public company so its actually fairly easy to find their financials. In 2003 they had this guidance:
Upward Revision of 2003 Revenue Forecast
Given the company's first quarter performance, we are revising our estimate for FY 2003 revenue slightly upward to the $16.5 million to $17.5 million range.
Source: http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20030501005234/en/IGN-Reports-Positive-Cash-Flow-Quarter-Q1-Revenue
What's important is if they are gaining visitors since 2003. It looks like the answer is yes although only by double. They were getting around 8m uniques in 2003 and are now getting around 18m uniques.

IGN was a big deal for walkthroughs for console games back in the day when nobody, i mean nobody made any walkthroughs except them(for sick game with sick story lines, unlike these graphic games we have today with no story line). Now most people play some type of online-interactive game which doesn't exactly require a walkthrough.

I would be in disbelief if IGN made more than 3 mill a year in revenue. They definitely make more than 3 million a year. They were once a public company so its actually fairly easy to find their financials. In 2003 they had this guidance: Show nested quote +Upward Revision of 2003 Revenue Forecast
Given the company's first quarter performance, we are revising our estimate for FY 2003 revenue slightly upward to the $16.5 million to $17.5 million range. It looks like the answer is yes although only by double. They were getting around 8m uniques in 2003 and are now getting around 18m uniques. The fact that they had 3 million in revenue 9 years ago is almost meaningless. Maybe their costs are astronomical, maybe they cant generate the ad revenue anymore because google is killing them, maybe team liquid is eating their lunch.

I am not arguing any of that. Revenue has nothing to do with costs.....I was merely replying to Cranium.

Let it be known: awful game reviews = -$550m. We can finally quantify bad taste!

The price disparity is likely due to the assets they purchased as well as ign.com when they bought them. Seeing as they sold many sister sites all owned by ign.com.

Funny how IGN also bashed Wii/DS success by calling it casual and not true hardcore
Now as wii and ds died down and only the hardcore remain their hits seem to have died down as well

Ign had or maybe has stll a paid member modell, which allowed for additinal stuff... Maybe that didnt do so well in the last few years?

The Kane & Lynch thing was Gamespot, not IGN.

Even IPL isn't mostly about SC2 as well, come to think of it, unless you are saying that LoL is dying as well. because IPL is a huge part of sc2, with their Las Vegas events and IPTL. The sale of IGN could mean big changes and even the end of IPL. This absolutely belongs in the sc2 section
Yup, in fact I believe it would be one of the first things to go.

Yup and game review magazines always meant crap to me. Still cannot believe I used to buy all those Game Pro's, Nintendo Power. PC Gamer, etc. when I was young. There's way too much crap out there.

They were never worth $650m, this is just another example of News Corp failing when it comes to online acquisitions. See MySpace as another example. Bought for about $600,000,000, sold for $35,000,000.
It turns out "be a popular website" isn't on its own a business model that justifies paying $600,000,000. Who knew?

I have like 900 dollars in scholarship refunds I was going to spend on alcohol and hot pockets, but I'm willing to cut corners as long as I get a corner office =D
