Stephano is pretty immature, judging from his sense of humor. You can't make jokes like that. It's not funny after the Penn State debacle. And to those guys posting in support of buggering 14 year olds . . . you have serious issues.

I would call this whole thing a joke but in fact it BEGAN with a joke, now it's a way for Stephano haters to bring him down...
I noticed that the pro community was really harsh with him too, like they're feeding the troll : I just watched state of the game and they were talking about the favourites for WCS World, they mentioned Nerchio and Scarlett but not even Stephano.

When ToD said "there is also Stephano" JP said "Well if he doesn't meet another 14yo girl again"...
Seriously that's all to say about Stephano and WCS World ?
Because everyone agrees on the fact that Protoss should rule the WCS world, now what would have been great to discuss is Stephano's chances given that he has the best ZvP in the world...

Honestly i'm not an american hater but this overreaction is just soooo silly.

Just because we want him to be punished with that stupid "dirty joke" doesn't make us a hater.
if he were to do it privately, then it's fine.
Surely not when his "buddy" was streaming to the public with the sponsor logo on the steram

Actually it does. Do you and your friends tell jokes? This is the same shit. He told a joke. That's it. Then the community went off crying like it always does. Complaining to sponsors and everything else trying to flame him into oblivion. The sc2 community honestly sucks. You're too quick to pull the trigger because of one little joke, event or sentence. Honestly who gives a shit how these people talk. Does it have any impact on the plays they make in the game? They are manner and everything else in tournaments. I'm just tired of seeing every little "fuck up" as you would like to call them being ridden until the player is not even recognized anymore. Everyone here makes inappropriate jokes. Stop trying to get others fired for what you do.

When you are popular like Stephano it's not just a friends talking dirty jokes if it gets out.
It is a widely recognized person with a couple huge sponsors saying he abused a 14 year old girl.
Like it or not, but stuff works differently when you are popular.

You have to consider that the Penn State-coach/molester isnt exactly world wide knowledge, so you have to excuse a frenchmen for not knowing about it and adjusting his (somewhat twisted) humour accordingly

OMG who cares ?? he didn't do it in reality, and the message completely utterly suggests that as well...

Stephano has said he is sorry for the message, life goes on.. Now please people... let it go on....

Maybe Stephano's comments are acceptable in France? But he is paid a lot of money to be on an international (US based) team. Imagine the PR nightmare that a professional sports team would incur if its young star player was caught making statements like that. Sponsors don't want to be associated with child molestation, not even in a joking way. So EG had to take some action.

re: white knight

Wasn't referring to you specifically, just similar knee-jerk reactions that lots of posters/gamers give when people start bringing political correctness discussion.

I'm not too sure what you're arguing. Are you arguing that basically the gaming community is full of immature, rude, racist, sexist, and unfunny losers, so we shouldn't try to change its image to one that is fun, open-minded, driven, and passionate group of people? Many of the popular commentators have succeed in showing the "nerd" community as what it is: a group of smart people who enjoy playing games and have fun.

Are you saying that, to you, gaming is about calling each other racial/homophobic slurs, and making sexist/inappropriate jokes? Because otherwise, I don't see why it would be wrong for the gaming community to keep these problematic behaviour in check... just like any other reasonable community.

How can you say that the community is overzealous in persecuting him? The guy only got a one month suspension. In other industries he would've been fired instantly. If anything, this is merely a symbolic gesture really, to show that EG does not condone jokes like that, and good on them. I don't want to support people who think rape jokes are cool either.

It's a simple matter; he made a stupid joke, he apologizes, he won't do it again, we move on. Him apologizing and people coming out and acknowledging the fact that it was not acceptable is an important part of moving on.

If anything, EG not punishing him would (and should) cause people to talk about this for a lot longer than they will, because they would be silently condoning his actions.

Ya, I'm sorry if my argument is coming off as vague. That's probably part of the reason you're misrepresenting it and attacking some points I never made. My arguments not really rooted around the stephano incident specifically. Its more just a rant geared towards this, and all the other similar drama events that pop up around players getting suspended/banned/criticized/ostracized. Stephano's punishment was actually rather mild when compared to the punishment others received. I'm not trying to argue against his suspension, I'm trying to argue against all the drama centered around incidents like it. Ironic, I know, because here I am contributing to it, in a way.

What my point really boils down to is this: the starcraft scene was better off before all these silly PC-campaigns started happening. That's really all I'm trying to say.

Were we really? I'm pretty sure the fighting game community is a good example of a pre-"PC Campaign" community and they're kinda gross. They are stilly heinously misogynistic and they racist/homophobic jokes are so common that you'd be hard pressed to convince any rational outside observer that it's little more than a KKK rally.

I'm honestly surprised that little incidents like these STILL spark so much objection. Time and time again community leaders have made it clear that they don't want their players/casters behaving this way. They are the ones dealing with all the money so if anyone knew how this behavior impacted business it would be them. They either don't think they can sell Starcraft to the mainstream with this behavior or these fan protests actually do financially threaten them and this change is coming internally. Either way, people who think that this is just harmless fun are in the minority (otherwise there wouldn't be action taken against players/casters).

At this point I've completely lost interest in the actual incidents and I'm genuinely fascinated by the people who, time and time again, argue that this behavior has a place in our community. Who do you really think you're going to convince?

I literally cannot agree more with this post. The naivete of some people in this community is incredible. It has been made absolutely clear that it is unacceptable, but there are still people white knighting for those doing it. You'd think people would realise that its beyond that level now; brushing it off and covering it up isn't going to work.

Eh, Stephano is getting paid to do a job and with that comes responsibility. Someone making a random post on TL have nothing to do with that.

Though you could argue EG is a bit hypocritical considering the way some of their other players have acted through the years.

i think someone joking about abusing isnt as bad as team liquid encouraging drug use on their website and imo its not professional aswell

Personally I think there is a "logic bug" in our societies, because it is "socially acceptable" (more or less depending upon your country) for two teenagers to have sex with each other while none of them is actually responsible for their actions (thats why minors have a different set of penalties from adults) and it is "not socially acceptable" (=illegal) for an adult who is responsible for his actions to have sex with a teenager who isnt. For the second case we seem to break the usual "innocent until proven guilty" rule for our laws.

So - to make a long story short - EITHER we should stop fooling ourselves and stop this abundance of sex between teenagers OR we stop the hypocrisy and allow sex between adults and teenagers as well. My choice clearly lies in the first version since teenagers in the midst of puberty are not clear enough of mind to judge carefully themselves.

kind of depressing that people don't differentiate between things that are illegal. Smoking weed, abusing a kid, murdering someone its all the same right?

you're a moron
If you can't see the difference between a public figure like Stephano talking about abusing some kid and TeamLiquid letting a thread about weed on it's forums, then I have no idea how to even begin to argue with you.

Point is, Stephano said something, on a stream, intentional or not, about something offensive. It is absolutely within EG's right (and they should) suspend him. Stephano is a public figure, like it or not. And for a e-sports team that's run on only sponsors basically, it's a huge deal.

The difference is, they know where to draw the line. Stephano has always been in a sense 'out of control' at times, like when the cops had to go get him when he got completely wasted.

Stephano should leave EG, he's better than any player in NA anyway, a move to South Korea would improve his game much more.
