Howdy there and welcome to the top 50 streamers list thread for this month!

Huh? What's this?

For those of you who don't already know what this is about: I'm gathering various data from all the streams that are presented on teamliquid.net (viewers, game, events, etc.) and use that data to produce the pretty tables you see below. The tables only contain SC2 players (that is, people streaming games of Starcraft 2 being played by themselves) and not casters, teams or other streams. The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities, a SC2 streamer streaming Dota2 or other games is not being taken into account.

For current stream data, go and visit soiii's site http://sc2streamnumbers.com/ where you can check out detailed graphs of stream viewers of every stream. (Thread here). Please check it out, it's pretty awesome. I thought about doing something like that at some point, but soiii did it way better and prettier than I could've ever done.

The beta

Last month saw the start of the much anticipated Heart of the Swarm beta (And I still gots no key. ), and practically every pro gamer who streamed started streaming HotS right away. At first I planned to create a separate ranking for streamers streaming the beta, but that quickly turned out to be a near identical version of the current table (which now includes both Wings of Liberty and HotS streams). So, instead, I've added a new column to the usual tables showing the percentage of HotS being played.

The percentages are not as big as you might think, though. A lot of streamers played the beta only for a short while before returning back to WoL. That's quite understandable, considering that - for now - they make most, if not all of their money with WoL. I'm curious to see the change in these percentages the closer HotS reaches its release date.

Also note that the HotS percentages are not always 100% exact. It's up to the streamers to declare whether they're playing WoL or HotS, and especially in the first few days of the beta there was still some confusion about this. Dragon streamed HotS days before he actually changed his streaming infos from WoL to HotS, and other streamers forgot to switch back to WoL after trying out the beta. So if you see a streamer who supposedly did or did not play HotS in the last month and you could swear that the information is not correct, that's the most likely reason.

The list

Now, without further ado, here's this month's tables:
(The HTML versions contain some more information due to space reasons.)

Some stray observations

  • My prediction from last month didn't quite turn out to be true. But still: Evil Geniuses take the top three spots in average viewers. You guys sure as hell know how to build a fanbase. Congrats!
  • The HotS numbers are interesting. Already popular streamers like Idra or Stephano did not suffer all that much from not streaming too much HotS. On the other hand, those who streamed a lot of HotS gained more viewers than those who didn't on average. Players like White-Ra, Nerchio, Sheth and NonY did better than last month, while Grubby, Demuslim, Hero and Incontrol (who barely streamed any HotS) lost some viewers. Still, it's not so simple as to declare "HotS=Viewers".
  • Some notable absentees for this month: DRG, Select, Seed, Bling, Happy, VINES. This lowers the number of streamers from Korean teams to just one.
  • If you find a player with the wrong team associated with him, let me know! It's getting harder and harder to keep that part of the database up to date. Also, if any streamer on the list isn't just playing games but also uses his stream for casting SC2 games, let me know as well.
That's all I can think of for now. Hope you guys enjoyed!

streaming right now would be certain death for most GSL players

Kespa players will take anything they can to win and GSL players already have enough information out there about them as it is so it's not too surprising

Technically speaking, Violet is teamless and is sponsored by AZUBU. But then again, White-Ra is also teamless and under a personal sponsorship, so you're right to point this out. I'll update this either later today or tomrrow.

Edit: Similarly, Elfi also has a personal sponsorship. But he has multiple sponsors, and I'm not yet sure how to display this.

Thanks you for the HOTS% o_o. Destiny kind of lost viewers due to the zone change + lack of streaming becuase of moving around.

As usual, it's funny how i am somehow able to hit 666 at so many things, well i guess at twitter it wasn't so hard but then i also had 1666 points on ladder so i guess it isnt a coincidence.

Haha!

By the way, you are the only one out of all the players on the list who did not set his race for his stream. So I always have to manually add it when creating the rankings. That's, like, 30 seconds of extra work once every month!

I'd love to watch some pro zergs streaming HOTS but for some reason every time I check streams I never see any. Kinda curious why when HOTS beta first started there were so many pros streaming it, and now it feels like there are almost never any pros streaming HOTS. I guess the novelty of it wore off after a week or so and they went back to WoL which they need to practice until HOTS actually comes out?

I've switched Elfi and Violet from teamless to their personal sponsorships, and will add those in general from now on. Personal sponsorships seem to get more and more common these days, after all. Also fixed desrow's team.

Thanks for all your support, guys!

Hmm, I have put him as a caster in my list some months ago, which means he's excluded from the rankings. I cannot differentiate between a caster and a player from the data I have, so I have to manually exclude casters. Some players also cast events on their streams, which usually gives them way more viewers than they'd usually get.

In this case, however, I couldn't find any specific events that Neytpoh casted, and my memory fails me as well. So if anyone has any information on this, please let me know. Especially if he's really just streaming his own games.

His average viewers for last month were 630, so if he's just a player he'd definitely make it into the ranking.

Hmm, I independently kept some stats (although not as comprehensive) and I have TaeJa somewhere between Ret and Sheth, with a single stream period on the early morning of September 13th averaging around 2180 viewers. Not saying anything is inaccurate because everything else looks great

2188 viewers, yes. But he only streamed for about 2 hours this month, and my list has a minimum requirement of 5 streaming hours. I mentioned that in the last couple of threads, but not this time. Hmm, it's probably a good idea to include all my requirements for the rankings in the OP every month to avoid confusion.

Because there aren't nearly enough amazing Protoss streamers compared to all the Terrans and Zergs who constantly stream -.-' Makes me sad when I want to watch high level Protoss play. Good thing I love White-Ra lol, but that's about it.

Anyways, we all know EG wins

Any thought to including entities with stream numbers like NASL or other weekly/daily programs?

It would just be interesting to see how they do compared to individuals.

Just a thought.

Honestly he must not have a lot of things to do in Marseille besides training. His life must be 1/3 streaming, 1/3 tournaments, 1/3 sleep. I find that quite sad honestly but not speaking french in Marseille is preventing him from doing anything.

He's a professional player for team Virtus.Pro (the same team Slivko is on)

He is not a caster

I know that. But some players do cast games on their streams in their spare time, so to speak. Pomi did so recently, for instance.

The problem is that, while I do record the events the streams are running under, it's not easily possible to determine whether a stream is being used to cast or to play. Player X streaming the event "Playhem Daily" is most likely playing the game. Player Y streaming the event "WCS Europe finals" is most likely casting. But you cannot say for certain without actually watching the stream. I'm planning on changing my approach for this, though, and I'll either create a white-list of regular events or a black-list of events where players were casting games, instead of blacklisting the players entirely when I find out they were casting some games.

Apollo is on there though.

Hmm, did he cast games on his stream lately? He started the stream to ladder, and I figured that's what he's still using his stream for. If that's not the case, please let me know.

Just a thought.

That's definitely possible, and I might get around to this next time. It's the lack of time for the most part that keeps me from doing interesting statistics like that. It's often more complicated than it sounds, though. Sometimes the restreams (which haf far less viewers, obviously) have the same event name as the original stream, or there are different streams for the same regular event (Playhem Daily with their various casters), or there are multiple streams for the same event. But this is definitely something I want to do.

And then of course there are the big events like GSL, MLG or IPL, which do not publish their live viewing numbers at all.

EG stream team! Climbing those leader boards. It is getting kinda crazy though. Forgg spent 31% of the month streaming. The lack of Koreans streaming now is scary. Private practice mode with GSTL and elephants running around I guess.

Yeah Apollo plays, I just wasn't sure if you meant that you don't put casters on the list, or you don't put people who only cast on the list. Difference =]

Hmm. I can't for the life of me figure out why I defined him as a caster some months ago. Most likely he used his account to stream some small tournament or something. Anyhow, I've moved him back to the player category for the time being and will keep an eye on it. Thanks for letting me know.

Good to see Idra has been putting in the streaming hours recently.

'tis a shame to not have Grubby streaming as often as he used to at the moment. Learn so much from his stream!

Scarlett has a stream? did it work? I think I read she couldn't stream because of poor internet connection? I'm confused.

Anyway, really interesting list. Thanks.
