In the Winter Season, anyone could take a shot at making it all the way to the top by coming out to the Winter Championship and competiing through the Open Bracket. In Spring, we're giving people even more chances to progress up through the ranks and position themselves well at the Spring Championship. And that is where the Open Online Qualifiers come in.
Passes will go on sale starting at 7pm ET on Tuesday, April 3.
The Open Online Qualifiers will have three regional ladders: EU, NA, and KR/TW. Up to 128 players can compete on each ladder. The Top 8 from each Region will go on to compete in the Invite-Only Online Qualifiers. The top finishers from each Region of the Invite-Only Qualifiers (Top 8 from NA, Top 10 from EU, and Top 10 from KR/TW) then go straight to Arena 2, and it's just a short jump from Arena 2 straight into Pool Play at the Spring Championship. So this is your chance.
Want to know more about the Open Online Qualfiiers? Here's the Map Pool, Competition Format, and full info about the Event.
How to Compete
KR/TW
Registration for this region is already complete.
NA/EU Regions
- 32 players from each of the NA and EU Blizzard Grandmaster ladders will be invited to participate in the Open Online Qualifiers. This will be the Top 32 on each Regional ladder as of 5pm Pacific time on Monday, April 2.
- If you are in the Top 32 of NA or EU at that point, you will receive an email from Blizzard, sent to the email associated with your bnet account, telling you that you have been selected and inviting you to participate. Please follow the instructions in that email to register.
Anyone in the NA or EU regions who wishes to participate but does not qualify through the above system can simply purchase an Open Online Qualifer Pass in ourstore for $10.
Passes will go on sale starting at 7pm ET on Tuesday, April 3.
Regional Play Schedules
Please note: these schedules are for players only. The Open Online Qualifier portion of the Spring Season will not be broadcast.
- Korea/Taiwain: March 30, April 2
- North America: April 10-12
- Europe: April 13-15
Check your email on Monday for your Blizzard invitations, or buy a pass in the store on Tuesday! Either way, this is your chance to be a part of the all-new Season of MLG StarCraft II.

Automatic invitations through Blizzard. Pretty cool!

ladder warriors aren't typically the top professionals and defintelty play more orthodox styles so it should be fun seeing new faces and good play.
empire happy :>

Agreed. It's great to see Blizzard becoming involved with competitions. Maybe sooner or later they'll figure out a way to use LAN at competitions. Or maybe that's hopeful thinking.

Can't wait to watch the ladder over the weekend
|
|
What i like is that these kind of thigns you know will get the ladder way more competitive and people will fight harder to get the spots if the system is not too flawed obviously. Still its a wodnerful idea GJ!
|
I missed the part where they explained why its Top 8 NA but Top 10 EU/KR. Is it due to smaller talent pool in NA?

Or maybe it's because European and Korean players are going to have a harder time to participate.
|
Ohh this is awesome! Too bad I am not in GM yet. T_T
|
This is pretty awesome ^^. GL to all that choose to compete

I'm glad they are doing the ladder thing, makes ladder points a bit more valuable

This will be great, and the map pool does't seem too bad, a few poor maps but all in all great!
|
wow on NA it starts right when my spring break ends
|
Hmm interesting with top 32 invite
|
What about people from different server qualifying for the ladder system? For example, there are many Koreans and Europeans with their own NA account and are placed in top 32 NA server. Are they still qualified for NA server qualifier?
|
I like this, gives new ladder heroes chances to become pro. Good luck everyone.
|
This is awesome news! GL to everyone who will be playing in the open tournament! I'll be submitting my casting resume so maybe i'll get lucky and can co-cast some matches
|
How do you deal with people with multiple accounts in high ladder positions?
|
maybe we will get to see deezer and combat ex in a lan xD

GL Taiwain players! I don't think there's more than 2-3 GM's from Taiwan on the TW/KR ladder. with Sen being one of them :D

I'm so confused.. up to 128 players. what if 90 bronze league players buy passes before anyone else? I think there will be alot more demand than mlg predict, simply because MLG will financially back them if they qualify. Some people may just buy passes so they can play good players and have the chance to go to an mlg event if their cheese pays off.

CombatEX apparently quit, and Deezer doesn't play enough to make it into the top 32.

That's why it is "open" anyone can join. Typically only a handful of ransoms join these, it isn't worth the money for some bronze player to pay just to lose to a pro. At that point just pay for lessons you'd get more out of it.
I'm sure if the demand for spots was there mlg would open it up beyond 128 but I doubt it will fill anyway outside Korea perhaps.

They reached out to teams and offered them advance entry of two players, free of charge.
Also, players qualified for the Invite-Only qualifiers are NOT allowed to play in the the Open Qualifiers.
MLG really has thought this out pretty well.

Yeah I'm pretty curious too as to what happens to eg Koreans in the top 32 on NA, as well as people with multiple accounts. It's not like Blizzard know who each account belongs to.

I assume that the players are exepcted to disclose if they received two invites and Blizzard resolves it by asking which server they would prefer to play on and going from there.

This is the "MLG Online Qualifiers", so no travel necessary. They simply sign on to their account and deal with the lag if there is any.

so just for clarification, will people still be able to sign up into the open bracket for the Spring Championship without going through these online qualifiers?

The title is a bit misleading. I thought this was going to be a playhem style thing where anyone could try. Also, is inviting GM players that good of an idea? Top 1 masters are where most of the pros sit.

It seems like it would take pressure and responsibility off the players. you would think that is a good thing. Not sure why you are so angry about it. I think that it is fine as long as all players do get contacted.

We extend the professional courtesy of contacting managers first for players that have management. For those that do not, we contact directly.
Please check your junk folder, @mlgpro.com or @majorleaguegaming.com email accounts some times do not make it through filters.

The numbers may change again for the Summer Season, based on Spring results.

If a Player is invited to participate in the NA Open Online Qualifier for being top 32 in the NA GM League, they have Free Entry into the NA Open Online Qualifier. They may decline that invitation and participate in one of the other Open Online Qualifiers by purchasing pass.
Just like in the Winter Season, if a Player qualifies for Spring Arena #2, their travel will be paid for from their qualifying region. If, for example, a Player wins the NA Invite-Only Online Qualifier and needs to fly to the Arena in New York from Korea, Sweden, or another place outside of the North American Region, their flight won't be purchased by MLG and they will instead receive a $400 Travel Stipend.

Players may not participate in more than one Spring Open Online Qualifier.

In the end, roughly half of each region's 128 Open Online Qualifier spots went to GM Players and top Teams, with the other half available for public purchase.

Our "Open" Brackets will always have registration that is open to everyone.
You don't need to play in a Spring Open Online Qualifier, Spring Invite-Only Online Qualifier, or Spring Arena in order to compete in the Open Bracket at the Spring Championship in Anaheim, but doing so can improve your Seed and provide you with a starting spot in Open Bracket Winners Round 5 or Pool Play.

On April 04 2012 07:59 mrRoflpwn wrote: Why is taldarim and shakuras still in the map pool...
Several factors influenced our Spring Open Online Qualifier Map Pool.
First, we need seven Maps for our Tournament Format. Second, as long as Blizzard's Season 7 Map Pool included at least seven reasonably balanced/sufficiently tested Maps, we wanted to include only Maps from that Pool. We believe that their Season 7 Map Pool meets those requirements.
This means that we chose not to use Ohana, Korhal Compound, and Metalopolis. There is very little statistical data for Ohana, so we don't consider it to be sufficiently tested at this time. We don't consider Korhal Compound to be sufficiently tested either and the statistical data that we do have points to some potentially large balance issues. We did not think that our Map Pool should include both Metalopolis and Metropolis, so we choose Metropolis as what we believe to be the better of the two Maps.
We believe Tal'darim Altar and Shakuras Plateau are proven, tournament-worthy Maps. Given our own statistical data and this TLPD data (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/sc2-international/maps/448_Tal%27Darim_Altar_LE), we believe Ta'ldarim Altar to be one of the most statisticly balanced Maps in Starcraft 2. While some balance issues exist with Shakuras Plateau, it is included because we believe that it is reasonably balanced and sufficiently tested.
A Map's age does not factor into our decision process.

Players, like you, who finished in the top 80 in Columbus are invited to participate in the Spring Invite-Only Online Qualifier of their choice (NA, EU, or KR/TW). If your Team Manager hasn't already contacted you about this, don't worry. Expect an email today or tomorrow requesting your Region choice.
Players who are invited to participate in a Spring Invite-Only Online Qualifier are not allowed to participate in a Spring Open Online Qualifier.

I am just finding out about some serious errors with SC2battles. This is not acceptable. Every single person that paid for the NA qualifier will receive free entry to the next online tournament, or receive a full refund.
Sincere apologies. The tournament will continue and will still yield proper qualification results, but this is not the user experience we pride ourselves on with our tournaments. Again, this is not okay and we will address the errors immediatley tomorrow.

Can't you transfer all the info from sc2battles onto a reputable site like Z33K, Playhem, etc.? Bust through the qualifiers with all the right info and then fix the site.
I will help you with the process if needed.

There is a serious error (obviously) with the site. We are working very hard to fix it.
Again, this is completely unacceptable. I hope you all give us a chance again, and stick this out with us.

MLG will be releasing an official statement soon. All players that have paid to play in the NA Open Online Qualifier will be receiving a full refund.
The rest of tonights matches will be postponed until tomorrow at 8 PM EST (WR1). At 9:30 PM ET tomorrow, WR2 and LR1 will be played. Again, if these matches have been played, the matches will continue to stand.
We are very sorry for all the inconveniences you have experienced tonight.

For the EU qualifiers several of my players are having trouble registering for the tournament, one of my players has changed his name to add clan tag since he received his invite, so it isn't letting him accept his invite

Korean Ladder will bring new faces and a lot of smurfs of pro-gamers. A question though, how about people with many accounts? Like ForGG for example he got Raptor,oGsForGG, Apex. This is only 1 out of many progamers that have multiple accounts.

What about them having multiple accounts? Not sure what your question is.

Sorry, I don't usually post about these kinds of things, but I have to say that this MLG run event was incredibly frustrating and one of the worst tournaments I have participated in this far. Horrid, horrid experience.
On Tuesday we were supposed to begin at 5 PM PST. Due to brackets that simply would not work at all, most people had to wait at least 1.5 hours before even starting their matches. Even then, the round two matches were postponed - so we spent about 2.5 hours just to play a single match.
The following day was also filled with delays, with people confused about what time matches were and the bracket STILL not working properly. We had to send in replays via email! Incredible waste of time.
If it was just for these things I would not be complaining. It is MLG's first qualifier like this and it is understandable that they are having problems, and I think it is awesome that they are doing this. But throughout the tournament the administration proved completely inept and worthless. To top things off, I ended up being forfeited today and my opponent given a walkover, in a COMPLETELY unfair scenario in which MLG_Deimos blatantly lied.
I came on to play my match at 5 PM PST, the default time. Again, the day was filled with delays, and my opponent was still playing the previous round's matches, and so I was told to wait. Since I had an ESEA match at the same time, I took the opportunity to get the ESEA match out of the way. It had already been about 30 minutes after I left the first game of the ESEA match, and Sparticus (one of the MLG admins) had messaged me "are you there?" I responded with "is my opponent ready?" to which he did not respond. This was at 16:55ish in my stream.
Unfortunately I made the decision to put myself on busy status in my next game. By the time I came out of the 20ish minute game, there were multiple messages about how I had been forfeited due to not being able to be contacted. I messaged Sparticus and was directed to talk to MLG_Deimos, who informed me that I had been unable to be contacted for 30 minutes and so I had been forfeited. I argued that I had not been gone for 30 minutes as I was pretty sure it had not been that long. Then he said I had been unable to be contacted for 45 minutes, and so I had been forfeited.
Now I'm not saying that I'm not at fault here either. I should not have put my status as busy, and I should have given Sparticus more time to respond (only gave him about 1 minute before my game began), and I should have asked my ESEA opponent if he could wait. But I cannot help but feel that I was treated completely unfairly, especially from MLG_Deimos who either was not properly informed or just blatantly lied. I had to wait at least 30 minutes for my opponent, and I was given less than 24 minutes (which MLG_Deimos claimed was 45 minutes - which wasn't even CLOSE to the actual time). I don't think it's fair that you wait for one player, and yet don't wait for the other. And I especially don't think it's fair that you disqualify the player who DID have all his matches done on time and WAS online and ready to play at the specified time.
Now I know that these tournaments have tight schedules to run, but inconsistent administration like this made this tournament an even more horrendous experience than it already was. If MLG is looking to provide "the user experience that we pride ourselves on with our tournaments," then they have GOT to do a better job than this. In total I spent perhaps 6-7 hours for this tournament to play just THREE matches, and then only to get disqualified. That's not the kind of user experience I would pride myself on.
http://www.twitch.tv/superiorwolf/b/314793536 16:50 - received a message from Sparticus 40:40 - finish my game for ESEA
23 minutes and 50 seconds =/= 45 minutes.
