Some of you may have saw my announcement on Twitter, but I will be covering the MLG NY Winter Arena in-depth for GameSpot. Over the past few weeks I have been pitching mainstream editorial gaming sites to cover the world of eSports and professional gaming, and GameSpot was one that aligned with the same thinking that I had. My goal is to expand the audience and exposure of eSports to those who don't understand it so far, don't like it, or don't even know what it is. I want to expose those people to the community, industry, and sport that I've loved for nearly half my life. This weekend is an experiment to see the how things will go, so I implore everyone to at least check it out. The more views, comments and discussion around my coverage, the better chance I will have to continue to do this, and I appreciate any and all support from the community.
I will be providing interviews, recaps, previews and live coverage on http://www.gamespot.com/features/starcraft-ii-pros-converge-at-mlg-winter-arena-2012-6350914 and through Twitter and Facebook (http://www.Twitter.com/Slasher, http://www.Twitter.com/GameSpot, http://www.Facebook.com/GameSpot)
The first article that went up is actually a more general article titled 'The state of eSports: 2012' - http://www.gamespot.com/features/the-state-of-esports-2012-6350990/

Slasher is secretly inside the offices, hiding in the bathroom. He only comes out when Sundance is distracted, ambushing players during their bathroom breaks to get that sweet, sweet exclusive content.

It's so bizarre to me that on -gaming websites- like ign and gamespot, the hostility towards e-sports is so huge. I don't get it, are they jealous or something? Is it a classist thing where they think gaming too much crosses some border that makes you a nerd?

Just did interviews with DRG, PartinG, Leenock, GanZi, SjoW, Drewbie, Sheth, and CatZ. Got interviewed by Hot Bid. Will be up on http://www.GameSpot.com
This is definitely a good thing, both for e-sports and Slasher.
I just posted on GameSpot about some of the early comments I've seen, as they are down right stupid. Luckily these people are the minority and probably only play Call of Duty every other week with no real insight into anything else.

Thanks for these =) Feel like there haven't been enough interviews for such a stacked tourney. Can't wait to watch them all.
Great work Slasher, keep it up man !
These are the growing pains we have to push through... if anything this should be encouraging because we have to see it and move past it.
I had some thoughts but I moved them into a blog post... just got to long winded

Good job! More content is always appreciated, "pro gaming caster Rod Breslau".
Just as a little aside: You could have dressed a little snappier.

the number of comments on that site calling people who play games "no life losers" on gamespot hurts my head

really interested in hearing how gamespot brass felt the weekend went

Pre-Day 1 interviews with Huk, Leenock, MC, viOLet and DeMusliM, and post-Day 1 interviews with Sheth and Socke are up. Post-Day 1/Pre-Day 2 interviews with DRG, PartinG, Oz, Huk, Grubby, Thorzain, SjoW will be up shortly. Interviews with DRG, PartinG, Oz, and IdrA (before he lost to NesTea) are now up.

Awesome content as always Slasher!

Love these interviews thanks man. DRG fighting!
Good questions, good interviews, terrible camera man. He's almost doing what the camera man at NASL was doing. Constantly zooming in and out, in and out. Tell him to pick and shot a stay with it for the entire interview. A tripod wouldn't hurt either.
hahaha huk at the start of his interview
Please interview Grubby! :D
Good to know one can still become an e-sports journalist with a phrase such as 'you may have saw'.
Great work Slasher, but sad to see all the negative comments on the GameSpot article. Didn't expect casual gamers to still be so stuck in the past.
Nice interviews!
Looking forward to more stuff Slasher!
LOL @ so many people upset at the gamespot users comments.
If youtube never existed gamespot could easily take their place in dumbest comments. I wish there was a transcript for all of this, the content is awesome but I feel I can read it faster than waiting for each video

Good work, slasher.
I hope other sites will follow suit with this kind of stuff.

excellent coverage. This needs to be spotlighted. This is the most videos we've seen for Arena

appreciate the coverage slasher, TL coverage is always good too, but hotbid usually stops the interviews after day 1 with most events its good to have some proper consistancy with your interviews slash, tyvm
haha the end of the socke interview was nice =)
Do you plan to post more up, Slasher?
It's great to see GameSpot getting more and more involved. We all need to back this as much as possible. Send the videos to friends and make sure these get a ton of hits!
Does anybody know which build is huk talking about? is it the 2 gate expo robo or sth?
Great interviews slasher! Wish you had been able to interview some players such as Demuslim or Ret after their upset matches!
Also I love that you cut out the segments of the translators having to repeat the question to the player. It makes the questions and answers flow better in the interviews and I think it works great here!
keep up the great work!
Definitely awesome interviews. I hope you get to do more for gamespot!
Just saw this, great job and a great effort on getting the word out to a wider audience.
I read some complaints in here about the article comments section, but I definitely wasn't expecting such hatred for progamers, as if they're absolutely disgusted by such a vile idea for a profession. Quite the audience you've got there :p (Though I'm sure it's more-so just a very vocal minority).
Thanks for the interviews.

Also congrats Slasher on a job well done. I think you did very well in your interviews and written pieces so far for gamespot. Keep up the good work.

A shining Rod in the gamespot.

hi guys, i was slasher's producer at mlg this weekend. i promise the sundance interview will be up on the gamespot mlg feature page sometime in the morning along with the wrap-up of day 3, then an overall event wrap-up should follow sometime. i really hope you guys liked the videos, and please let me know what else i can be doing to improve esports coverage.
Good job slasher and good luck. I highly reccommend people to check it out and write a comment. The more the merrier.

I really hope people get behind this content and at least go and check it out - this is a big stepping stone that I feel is necessary for eSports in general, to become much more than it is now

it's awesome to have this much content surrounding a tournament. This is exactly what I've always wanted from SC2 news. I really hope GameSpot and Slasher do this again.

I don't think it's really necessary to ask the players to state so many specifics like name/age/where they live, but nice interviews

its probably because he's working the first time with a mainstream esport media and People dont really know the players on gamesport, we obviously dont need to know stuff like that or most likely know it all already except for gaming background in a few cases.
Meeeeh, update the OP I want to see that Sundance interview! x_x
Thanks for your patience guys, as Beng said he'll be getting the Sundance interview up as soon as he can. The Sundance interview was pretty long, so you guys should get some good information going forward and such. We'll try to post here when its up.

These interviews are meant to get out to a broader audience. Slasher was trying to show pro sc2 to a new audience. Its a good idea to introduce yourself to a new audience.

I guess it is still morning somewhere? One thing you can do to improve esports coverage is post the videos when you say you are going to, or don't tweet about them until they are ready for viewing.

Just watched the Sundance interview, that was a great interview with lots of good information. I'm glad MLG has found something sustainable and will be doing more Arenas.
Finally updated the OP will all the interviews from the weekend. Several others including SaSe, Thorzain, and more post and pre-game interviews from Day 3 might be up soon, but might have to wait a little while!
I hope everyone enjoyed my coverage this weekend!
Seriously, Thanks Slasher & Gamespot. ALL of the interviews are exceptional, I must highlight the Naniwa one though. First time I've seen an interview with him go into details about his thought processes and such, when it wasn't in an apologetic/required scenario.
IdrA interview up is the last one from the weekend. There are a few others not uploaded, but not sure if they will or not. Hope everyone enjoyed my coverage this weekend. If you did, let @GameSpot know and hopefully I'll be able to do this again at an event soon!
How can we let Gamespot know? Through tweeting at them or is there a feedback link at the Gamespot website for this particular thing.
The answer to the last question in the "Post-Event Interview - Leenock" isn't translated (starts at 1:45).
Otherwise great stuff. I've enjoyed all the ones I've watched.
Was there a reason why you didn't interview neither Nestea nor Mvp?
@Slardar you can let us know in the comments section (though our anti-trolling measures make it hard for newcomers), or say something to @gamespot on twitter... we'll hear you.
@OpticalPhoton i will look into that.
thanks for the kind words and honest feedback! there were a few interviews that i wasn't able to edit and publish before leaving new york and i will try to get them up but there's all this non-esports gaming stuff happening (like gdc and mass effect 3) that i have to prioritize, so i don't want to make any promises. because of the great support from the sc2 community for this content, i have a feeling we will be doing more.
