I would like to add that this isn't even that major of an event, if anything, this should be free and the Championships should be 10-15$

So I guess Blizzard's official "video policy" doesn't pertain to MLG?

http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/legal/videopolicy.html

I could be way off...can anyone explain this to me?
Or do the freed vods one week later do the trick?

I am a college student who is currently has a gold membership with MLG - 30 dollars for hundreds of hours of high quality gameplay and casting is worth it to me, but one weekend for 20 dollars is way too much. MLG should have either Gold's get arena for free or discounted for Gold membership (seriously what are you going to do with a gold membership :| if ur viewing online only)

My slow connection (and no, I can't get a better one for my address) handles HD rather poorly, not to mention 5 streams. Also, 1 dollar = 3.5 of my currency, which is not that cheap anymore, and why would I even sit and watch it all non-stop for the entire weekend? I'm not 15 anymore, I've got a son, lots of work to do. Paying that amount - even if it's not a problem for me - feels just unfair. It's like I have to buy a Ferrari Enzo or no car at all. I don't need THAT MUCH content and I can't be sure if I'll be able to watch all of it if I pay (and I never have time for VODs). The beauty of the Internet is all about having a choice, about flexibility and you've got the technology and resources to provide that, Sundance. One fixed option? Really? Is that what your marketing 'experts' advised you? There should at least be another, cheaper ($5 ?) option for 2 standard streams, HD or not. I would pay. $20 for tons of stuff I won't be able to absorb and take full advantage of - sorry. I'm sure you'd make much more with micropayment / modular model than with an all-or-nothing strategy like that. At least I'd advise you that as a web-developer / e-marketer. You'd have my $5 for basic features right away, but you'll get zero - now multiply that by the amount of people with different needs you've just ignored.

Going to go out on a limb and say Blizzards ESPORTS team has know about this plan for a lot longer than we have.

I don't have paypal or a credit card, there is a big timezone difference and Assembly is free and on at a better time.

Apart from that I would consider purchasing it.

It doesn't look like a bad deal. Unfortunately I can't afford it right now and I am still salty about the Assembly thing. Next time MLG.

The quality is always there with MLG, but for 20 $ for only a weekend, it's expensive.

Come on MLG, you can do better....

Sorry MLG, your asking price for such a short time period is unacceptably high. Better value can be found on GOM's website - and they still show their tournament for free.

I pay GOMTV for access to english commentary and VODs. If it wasn't for these services, I wouldn't pay AT ALL. I'm not comfortable paying to watch starcraft 2, especially considering the fact that Brood War content is free.

That being said, I'm not going to pay to watch grubby vs merz or whatever (no offense)

Really? people are complaining about 20 fucking dollars?
People pay more for UFC Pay Per Views and they are only like 3-5 hours max
Meanwhile MLG offers PPV for 20 Dollars and you get 5 streams for 20 hours with all the people you've watched fight through the qualifiers.

MLG has my 20 bucks and anyone that thinks that 20 dollars USD is outrageous then you are spoiled because what you are getting is worth way the hell more than what you are paying for it.

don't even try and compare the quality of not only the sport being presented but the quality of the production, the magnitude of the events and the hype, media, and quantifiable size of the two sports. Esports isn't anywhere close to MMA, I wish we'd drop the comparisons by now.

$20 for 3 days isn't A LOT by any means, but wasn't it previously $30 for an MLG Pro Circuit GOLD 1 year pass? I just don't think MLG or sc2 content is at the level where $20 is a deal. Especially with all the downtime (that's always promised to be fixed) and other quirks that always seem to happen at every event. They say 20 hours of content but really only 3-4 is highly valuable, meaning high quality play or content. MLG is by far my favorite tournament (yes even moreso then GSL) but it feels like half the event is watching crowd shots waiting for the next game (this is coming from a gold member, with quad stream).

$30 for a year becomes $20 for an event? Nope.

You are quite correct, I read more into the thread did quick research and found out that Companies like ESL are offering way better deals, as such I retract all dumb statements I've made, sorry to all for my ignorance

What a ridiculous idea, why would you even attempt this at this stage of community growth?

If this is going to be a reoccuring trend, Assembly please schedule all tournaments ontop of MLG dates

I'd consider paying for an event like this (although I'm super cheap)... especially if I could get some friends over for part/all of it. Ironically, this is probably going to motivate me towards being more likely to buy a GSL subscription

FYI, I consider myself super cheap as well, and I FINALLY got a GSL season 1 pass (of course the cheapest one $15...I would recommend it I don't know if it's because of my ad-block but the only "ads" I get are a few logos that appear briefly at the beginning then vanish) and it was the best decision I've made in a while. There have been some unbelievable games this season, so maybe I just lucked out. There is just no comparison to the entire GSL season 1 for $15 vs. $20 for a weekend of MLG.

Anyway try it out! I was pleasantly surprised.

The price is too high. GSL is cheaper than this and lasts longer. I won't be giving my money to MLG anymore apparently. Double your price for half the content. Sorry.

I do not like posts like this, "lol you're poor it's easy to pay $20". Sure, it's not much, but for the same amount of money you can get yourself a seasons worth of the massively better GSL. Maybe people might buy 3 days of MLG alongside it, or maybe they double down and get the GSTL too which again is probably going to be all round better. Then perhaps they decide that a subscription to the KSL and FXO streams allows them to support other people putting on great productions for a low cost if they want to chuck around a bit more money.

There's plenty of competition, if the majority of people feel they can spend their money better elsewhere (especially within the same kind of areas) then they're going to spend it there.

---

On the general PPV note, I'm pretty sure the whole PPV model didn't really take off nearly as much outside the states? I wonder how many viewers from Europe are really accustomed to the idea of dropping cash on a standalone event.

Wow, what a terrible TERRIBLE decision. Sundance seemed to me like a guy with some common sense, can't believe he would approve of this.

Do these guys realize that a ticket for GSL, the premium and best SC2 tournament since the end of 2010, an almost TWO MONTH tournament, costs 15$? Please take a moment and read that sentence again.

GSL, 2 months - 15$.
MLG Winter Arena (not even the main MLG event), 3 days - 20$.

Do MLG even realize that there are other tournaments people can choose from? You're not the only ones!!! People that cannot afford to purchase tickets for all the tournaments will have to make a choice, and you can bet your ass MLG will not be the top choice with 20$ for 3 days.

Also, good job trying to promote SC2 to new players/fans by not providing a free stream for the event, even in low quality.

TLDR: Disappointment
