On the contrary, I find sc2 to be more fun the more I ladder. The higher up on the ladder you go, the more you have to up your game, and that really gives me a rush of adrenaline. Whenever I lose 8 lings to a single baneling within the first 7 minutes of a game, I kick myself over and over and it makes me want to become the best damn ling microer in the entire world.

I think you're wasting your time. Being competitive and taking challenge is all good, but whats the point of being on top of the ladder or having best micro of lings? Game is all about having fun and relaxation. If you want a real adrenaline then go do some real sport, boxing, tennis or smth. At least they're useful for health. But spending your time to get better at video-game... I don't know, it's pointless.

may I ask what the fuck are you doing on teamliquid then?

I know TL is mostly about starcraft, but that doesn't mean everyone should walk around and pretend sc2 is good and all. The game failed (at least for me). laddering has become stressful for me ever since i returned during s5

often i get frustrated when i lose, much more than when i played during season 1.. i'm a calm person too, sc2 is the only thing that frustrates me

also having been demoted to diamond is really discouraging as well. i really wanted to get masters again but still have not been able to achieve it, until then i'll continue laddering a few times a day

Who are you to tell him what is wasting his time and what should give him an adrenaline rush?? This is the website of TEAM LIQUID, a very successful sc2 team.
If ladder is fun for people, and sc2 is fun, why would you want other people to go take up boxing because YOU dont enjoy the game? Everyone is just "pretending" that sc2 is good?
And yes, TL has a great community, it amazes me every day :D

Like i said awhile ago NA ladder is an elitist crew and it stems from the top and what's even more funny they aren't exactly elitist, u rarely go into a ladder game and see a legit gg, so much whining between races and imba instead of self reflection ( god forbid u look at a replay and see how slow u actually play). If you look at ladder as a meaningless way to improve while clenching ur competitive thirst, you might start enjoying it and not caring what others think or do!

Broodwar was more social, having a better chat interface that allowed for the formation of clans and teams and such within the game. If you're part of a clan, and you're playing and winning clan wars every weekend, and there's some camraderie and competition between individual players, it's more like playing a real sport at your school, or university, or on a city team or what have you. The social aspect was important to making broodwar big.

The ladder (iccup) wasn't automated in broodwar, and the ranking/matchmaking was much more plain and easy to see. YOu knew going into a game who you were going to be up against, and you got to pick that.

Broodwar was a more slowly paced game (games take more than 13 minutes and army control was harder, giving you more time to react) and broodwar took years and years to become as "solved" as SC2 is right now, with the advent of all the analysis and tools we have available now. Broodwar was more forgiving on low level players (I'm talking a D+ vs a C-) than sc2 is.

Finally, there is a little of the rose tinted glasses when we compare to BW. Sure, the number of players online on B.net was bigger for BW in 2001 than it was in 2007... but many of us grew up playing the game, and it would be impossible to say that there was something "wrong" with it, when that's your standard for comparison.

Before sc2 teamliquid was made for broodwar so yeah I think it's pretty legitimate to be here even though you don't like sc2 and I am one of those who is in the " Sc2 is not so good camp" .

This is something I cannot agree with. SC was as unforgiving as it's possible on any level of play and that was a major part of its charm.

Happens on EU also when u hit mid masters you see more frustration out of people, sometimes when im on good streak i can get 10 "fuck you" "gay" "imba zerg" messages per day

Yes and no, if you were mechanically improving player BW was giving much more satisfaction, in SC2 you can be fucked because your opponent did something blindly that didnt necesserily require any mechanic background, in zvz you can lose because your opponent chose to do 15 drones or zvp protoss managed to sneak close pylon. Or even simple cannon rush you missed mean you already lost the game(in most cases), there is really nothing to say about it, you say oh nice i fucked up gg. In bw there are much wider boundries of winning (in lower levels amateur play)because the game will force mistakes on both players, giving them both chances even if someone makes a small blunder. In SC2 since diamond even if you have Macro/micro/multitasking flaws you play decision making game, and if you dont address what your opponent is doing you lose, you dont really have that big leway of exploiting your opponents lack of mechanics.

What if this game had something like all of the F2P games out there? Something to 'buy' with your earned points just from playing? I dont know what that something would be, but I know for a fact that F2P games live off of that sort of thing and it is a big reason why people play those kinds of games.

I think Blizzard should take a look at something along these lines; the achievement system is great, and it drives some people, but a system for purchasing portraits, unit decals, maybe even some optional campaign material, and perhaps some other stuff seems like it'd be an incentive for some people to grind out a few games. And maybe enough that they get over the "fear" of losing...they'd get better simply by playing. I'd love it if more people were playing, infuse some people back into the game with HotS.

I left playing SC2 1v1 in season 5, but after a month or so, I have discovered that I miss the adrenaline spike I had while playing the games, so here I am, back to SC2 1v1 games.

And I'm enjoying it much more than 2 months ago.

I think the main problem is to get burned about getting your "objective" which is or should be to promote to the next league. You get blindfolded and just curses every race against you lose (while doesn't matter if the game before you won against the same race) and rages in desperation.

Now I'm really enjoying the game again, like when I first started playing it.

And what if I have been platinum since day 1 :D At least i'm above the average player.

Casual games with low skill caps and easy rewards are always popular with the masses. SC2 offers none of this. It's a hard game, it doesn't forgive, it doesn't pad your losses. You think you do well, but then before you know it your opponent shows up in your base with an army twice yours, with upgrades yelling at you that no, you are not good. A lot of people don't like this so they either play something easier or abandon games altogether. I come from a fighting game background, and I cannot make any of my friends retain any interest in fighting games after their mashing doesn't seem to get them anywhere.

As for the people who DO want to stay and play some more, I think SC2 is just hugely lacking in the social component. There are so many things Blizzard could do to make people play or at least log in.

Why not talk to Twitch and Owned and all those streaming sites and have streams integrated into Battle.net? You log in, maybe you don't necessarily want to play, but while in there you have a one stop shop to watch all the streams you want. Multi-view, fancy flashy stuff (Teevox?) where you can just immerse yourself in the streams.

Have a chat, a proper chat. A place where there is just a stream of conversation with people. Divide chats by league, or whatever you want. Combine this with integrated streams and logging into Battle.net becomes this place where there's people watching, chatting, and jumping right into games if they feel like it.

Another thing that would be amazing in helping the whole sense of community would be clan support. Lots of people say well, that is just a matter of putting your clan tag in front, and people can just meet outside of Battle.net. While technically true I really don't think it's optimal. If any of you play WoW, you know what it's like to log in to your server and immediately be in the middle of a guild conversation. You log in and you feel like you are a part of something, a social activity, you are hanging out with friends. Why not have this in SC2? It's mind boggling that it's not there. Battle.net should be the ultimate hangout for anyone interested in SC2.

But then how do you get to meet these people? Random ladder encounters? Usually in WoW people get together to achieve certain things they can't do alone. An idea I have that might be helpful here would be to have automated tournaments. You can decide you want a tournament with X number of participants. You set it up, you decide on the rules(single elimination, group stages) and you open up the tournament. People logged in just select tournament from the 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, FFA menu and in a few seconds(or mins) they are put in a bracket in the tournament. They can spectate and chat with the other participants when not playing, you can meet new people, you can prove yourself and impress others. Maybe for the achievement enthusiasts out there we can have tourney related achievements with badges or other meaningless things to collect for your profile. Maybe the guy who opened the tournament seems like a friendly fellow and he invites you to his clan. You get an invite to the clan much like you'd get an invite to a WoW guild and there you go, suddenly I'm awesomeclan.Blues and I have a whole team of new people to meet, practice with, a team to represent in tournaments, or just have fun matches with. I log in to Battle.net and I have a net of people to ensure logging in to SC2 is a social experience whether I play, or just watch or just chat about the game with the people in there.

I dunno I think the technology is there for us to have all these cool things and much more, without it being that much trouble. If you love Starcraft, logging into the game in this day in age should provide you with absolutely everything you could possibly need to get your fix.
Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

Ladder is too depressing, i lose all the time. Losing is no fun
I have 11 days vacation starting this weekend which i plan to use to play 10+ games a day, hopefully enough to get back to diamond.

SC2 ladder is really hard on those that don't have much time for practice, everyone is improving so rapidly that you just can't keep up on 10 games a week, which results in demotivating demotions and constant loss streaks whenever you return to play because all your opponents practiced in the days you couldn't/didn't play.

Well... there are always monobattles for me

It is just a matter of stadistics. My 8 games in Season 7 has been 2 protoss 3 terran and 3 zerg, so nothing strange out there...

I think Blues touches on quite alot of good points why the number of people laddering 1v1 has dropped and I would probably say that the ones left playing now are the dedicated ones and the ones that really enjoy it.
We are over two years into the game now and though that might not seem too long to some of the 'classic' pc games, it's probably the point where players attention spans drop off a bit. It's that period of time where there needs to be a big update (ie hots) to keep people who arn't the sc2 fantics playing. Like if you look at something like cs, over the years that had quite alot of different releases and this is what kept the gameplay fresh and interesting, before it became the classic shooter it is today and even now its getting another version due soon.
Hots will bring back alot of 1v1 laddering i feel.

My personally experiance on the ladder is as many people said, its very difficult. I have weeks where I will be untouchable and feel like i've really got a grip on the game and then with a rise in who im playing the following week I can't win to save my life. I think its the reality check that prevents me from playing more than I do. I enjoy the learning and love playing the game but because its such a complex game and people are far better than me I have to spend alot of time working stuff out and concentrating hard and this can result in getting tired or feeling frustrated when I can't pick up a win. So i will often log out and do something else after a few games just to have a 'rest' as it were. I'm only a high level gold player so i doubt I play half the games most of the players here play but that's my sort of feeling to why i struggle to play as much as i'd like to.

You have to remember that theres alot of other pc games out there these days that are pretty decent, I think people will come and go regarding sc2. But i do feel the people playing sc2 are alot more commited to the game than alot of players for other games.

As mentioned by others I would also favour a ingame tournement system, i enjoy playing in tourments but i have to go outside the game to get invovled in this. Most of the time there isn't many that fit in with my time scale.
