[GSL] Kim Young Jin, “Thought they were joking when I heard about the groupings”
“Very pleased to have broken through a really difficult group”
Translated by dearyuna / @dearyuna

“The national representative Terran” Kim Young Jin (SuperNoVa of oGs) has placed first in Group B and will advance to the round of 16.

SuperNoVa defeated fellow teammate oGsMC, and previous season runner-up FXOLeenock. oGsSuperNoVa, who defeated both oGsMC and FXOLeenock 2:1, has garnered respect due to his strong mentality even in the most disadvantageous situations.

You’ve successfully defeated strong competition in order to advance to the round of 16. How do you feel advancing as first in your group?
I anticipated a lot of hardship, but was able to advance as first in my group. As much as it was difficult, I’m very pleased.

We are curious as to how you spent your time post WCG 2011?

Prior to 2012, I focused on resting. With my renewed energy, I focused on preparing and focusing towards today’s match after New Years.

You must have been frustrated during the reveal of the round of 32 groups.

The team manager, Park Sang Ik, informed me via phone and I thought he was joking. To be honest, I wasn’t feeling too great. However I decided to think of it as a gathering between the best players of their respective ladder placements, and told myself that it would be an opportunity to really test myself.

How did you prepare for your first match against oGsMC?

I rarely practiced with my teammates. I practiced in a ladder-oriented fashion. Because all my teammates know my IDs, I made a new one to practice. I took caution with my privacy.

In your game against oGsMC, you used Banshees in every match.

That is how I established my concept. I pressed on in that sense because oGsMC uses a build that often excludes accounting for concealed banshees. I think it went according the planned scenario.

I think you practiced with a possible game against fOrGG in mind.

If we came head to head, I didn’t want to lose because he is in our team, and he is also a Terran player. If we played against each other, I really wanted to win. I practiced a lot of TvT.

You defeated FXOLeenock in the last match, but it was a hard win.

I was insistent on keeping a check on my opponent and advanced with small gains, which secured my win. All three sets were difficult. He played very well. It was a match fitting of a runner-up.

What do you think about the new structure for this season’s round of 32?

Because of the increase in number of matches, it became more difficult for players. However, a lot of prior placements have been based on luck, but with this structure, all matches will be based truly on skill versus skill. It’s difficult to prepare for, and on competition day, it’s also physically exhausting.

You’ve been able to break through this difficult group; we think it’ll be a shame if you become eliminated during the round of 16. What is your goal?

As difficult as it was, I also gained that much more confidence. I can’t fall back after advancing past this kind of group. [Laughs]. Ultimately, it was a win, but for now I’ll prepare for future matches.

Do you have anything more to say?

I follow through on communities a lot, and there were a lot of people who predicted a 2-loss elimination. I wanted to prove that I was strong, and I’m glad because I think I was able to do so. Thank you to my teammates who helped me practice, and to Momstouch for the boost, and I also want to thank Corsair.

[GSL] Jang Min Chul, “Goal is to win 500 million won this year (~433.5k U.S. dollars)”
Homestory Cup-GSL, tiring but worth it
Translated by dearyuna / @dearyuna
Original Link

President Protoss Jang Min Chul (oGsMC) has broken through a really hard group and has succeeded in advancing to the round of 16.

During the 2012 Hot6ix GSL Season 1 Code S Round of 32 on January 10th, oGsMC has placed second in Group B after defeating fellow teammate fOrGG, and previous season runner-up Leenock (FXO). oGsMC, who also participated in the Homestory Cup in Germany, has shrugged off the burden of physical exhaustion in a “President Protoss”-esque fashion to start off the new year on good footing.

It was a very difficult group, especially to the oGs players. How do you feel about advancing to the round of 16?

I came right here because I returned today. To be honest, I simply hoped not to place fourth, but the Homestory Win helped a lot psychologically. The fact that I survived an extremely difficult group is very satisfying.

When you participated in the Homestory Cup, you must’ve considered the GSL schedule.

I hoped that the GSL schedule wouldn’t fall on the 9th or the 10th. However, it fell right on the 10th. I originally attributed this to bad luck, but the results all worked out.

Isn’t it physically burdening?

I really want to eat and sleep. I was less focused on my first match rather than the last. [Laughs]. I warmed up by the time I played the loser’s match and final match, so it was alright.

When you heard that three members of oGs were part of one group, what did you think?

To be honest, I was annoyed. On top of that, it happened to be the three top players in one group. I don’t know how it felt like in the team house because I felt for Germany as soon as the brackets were confirmed. If I were also training in the house, the atmosphere would have been intense. I hope they consider picks better next time.

In your first game against SuperNoVa, you kept falling victim to Banshees every match.

In the first set I fell victim to his Hellion/Banshee strategy. I thought I would be okay because I have a lot of experience against Thor, Banshee mechanics. On the third set, I should’ve predicted Banshees, but I doubted he would go for Banshees again. However, he went for Banshees.

It must have been burdening to face fOrGG in the Loser’s match.

It’s actually more comforting than burdening to go for team kills. The first set was disappointing but the second set was okay, and luckily during the third set, I was able to foresee his strategy, thus securing my win.

You’re off to a good start in 2012, what are your goals for this year?

MVPDongRaeGu said 300 million won (~260k U.S. dollars), IMMvp said 200 million won (~173k U.S. dollars). I will set a goal for 500 million won (~433.5k U.S. Dollars) so that both of them can’t get that money. [Laughs]. I want to win as much as I can because with wins, comes the cash flow. I don’t want to simply shine early on like last year.

Is there anything more you would like to say?

Because of last year’s GSL point rank 3, I was seeded in the round of 16 selections. Zerg and Terran players should be cautious of my nomination. [Laughs]. I won the Homestory Cup, and I would like to thank those who supported me. The scoreboard isn’t that great for Protoss players, but even if I have to do it alone, I would really like to try and win this season. I’m thankful towards my parents, girlfriend, and manager. I’m also thankful for the people who work hard for eSports. Happy New Years to all.

Thanks for the translation, but could I request that if you translate one you would translate all of them, really sucks to have random individual groups translated. Like yesterday's group was a lot more interesting than today's thanks to Sen and Boxer being in it.

I didn't translate Group A's. The way that the interviews are published on TIG is by group. That's out of my control sorry. They don't interview everyone.

EDIT

There are interviews with a lot of players from the GSL preliminaries, but those are a LOT. If you would like a specific person's interview, please contact me and I will translate it for you.

I have no other suggestions considering I don't speak korean, it just seems like a strange nickname to give a player, considering both of korea's WCG representatives were terran and supernova got third in that. Am I missing something? Maybe he doesn't have a real nickname in korea yet and the interviewers had to stretch to find one?

It's not a nickname, the writer was probably just referring to his participation in WCG.

I believe you're mistaken, Korea had three representatives in the last WCG Mvp, MKP and Supernova. So they probably nicknamed him that because the WCG representation being his career's peak in SC2.

Not quite sure why they named him that because there's no English translation on that nickname. One possible insight to that nickname is based off his character, not solely off his skills. The way he carries himself as a Terran player and his comebacks may be the reason why they gave him that kind of nickname, a "exemplary Terran model" if you will. I only got this insight because of what they say within the same paragraph, talking about his mentality and such. Hope this helps.

I also agree with Namste's comment. lol

MVPDongRaeGu said 300 million won (~260k U.S. dollars), IMMvp said 200 million won (~173k U.S. dollars). I will set a goal for 500 million won (~433.5k U.S. Dollars) so that both of them can’t get that money.

Korea sent 3 representatives to WCG - (T)SuperNoVa was the 3rd one.
He was upset by (P)TitaN in the Round of 8.

I believe you're mistaken, Korea had three representatives in the last WCG Mvp, MKP and Supernova. So they probably nicknamed him that because the WCG representation being his career's peak in SC2.

Oh I didn't know mkp was a WCG representative, thought it was only 2 per country. I guess that makes sense.

MVP was off by a zero... when he said 200 million won, he meant 2000...

MC has so much personality. Of all the dominant Koreans, he's the only one who truly seems to grasp how to entertain beyond the game itself and establish a more human connection with fans.

The one thing I dont get is that I thought GSL had a policy where they would delay a match for up to 3 days if the player is traveling? Didnt they do something like that for HuK a couple times when he was traveling around the world.

They work that out way ahead of time with the tournaments. They probably don't have any kind of relationship with Homestory Cup, and they can't move groups for just any tournament.

Weird that people aren't able to search for the group A interviews lol. Anyway, will you be translating most of the interviews? In that case I'll just leave you to it and busy myself with other things hehe

If MVP makes it through, he will be number 1 seed (MC will be number 2 or 3 depending on if Nestea also makes it) so they cannot pick each other.

Didn't know that DRG and MVP had set goals. But this means we will see more of the top koreans at international events since Code S prize pool is actually less since we only have 5 this year (and maybe something like Blizz Cup at the end). Having only 5 Code S season also means the Code S players will have more time in their schedule.

I hope Nestea, MC, & MVP all continue to dominate this year, the way they were on fire in 2011, but there's a lot of new-guns nibbling at their feet. I must say, as cocky as the guy is at times, MC is one hell of a guy to cheer for, and a GREAT personality for e-Sports momentum. Hate him or love him, fucking entertaining personality.

Yea I have bias for the 3 that started it all, FD can be forgotten in these discussions (what fluke should?).

Ahaha what a boss pose by MC. Not sure if anyone remembers this but 500 million won is actually a step down for MC because he once said a long time ago that he wanted to win 1 billion won. I guess his 6 month slump tempered his expectations a little.

Wow. Supernova with a cold, murderous, regimented plan for his matches. That's what Code S is about. With that attitude I would not be surprised to see him in the semifinals this season.

MC is quite the interesting character.
I wish these interviews and translations are better advertised, I only found them for the first time today through the liquipedia tournament page.
These are some of the consistently best interviews in eSports!
