Firstly, I apologise if the SC2 General section isn't appropriate for this thread. But given its content, I felt this was the best location for it. Mods, you are free to move it if you feel it is necessary.

Introduction:
+ Show Spoiler +
What is LR-ing?
LR stands for Live Report. This is the act of describing an SC2 match in real time by posting about the details of the match in the Match Thread. You can think of it like commentating through posting. LR does not mean forum QQ, whining or balance posting. LR is primarily for informational purposes.

Why LR?
The first reason to LR is because sometimes people cannot watch matches live. Perhaps they are at work, have bandwidth problems, are on their iPhone, etc. A detailed LR lets them still experience that "Live" feeling and follow along a match they care about.

The second reason to LR is because it's constructive. It's also the main reason LR threads exist in the first place. If you want to QQ or whine, there is always the blogs section.

The third reason is that you both up your APM and observational abilities by LR-ing as you not only have to observe, but also comment and type.

How do I LR?
Put simply, to LR you just write what is going on in the match in an informative and meaningful manner. Fan-bias is fine so long as it's done in a playful and friendly manner. Attention to detail is also good. For instance:

IdrA makes a drone.

This may be true. But it's also not terribly useful to someone who is trying to follow. Instead:

IdrA continues making drones and forgoes zerglings despite seeing 4 warpgates.

Is much more useful to someone who is trying to follow.

Isn't that obvious?
Yes.

What if I want to make my LR prettier? How do you LR while trying to follow a match? Tips and Tricks?
Now to the main focus of this guide. Pretty LR-ing. This is how I choose to LR. LR-ing in SC2 is very different from SC:BW because there are so many special functions available and I feel it is a pity more people do not LR.

How to make LR-ing Pretty:

The preparation work:
+ Show Spoiler +
Starting off:
There's a little prep work to be done before I LR. I put a lot of effort into my LR because I want it to be as informative and useful as possible but it's not necessary in all cases. You don't have to follow everything I say here.

First off, go to the first post of the tournament thread. I choose to use the TSL Ro4 as my example. Click the Quote link at the top right, and copy and paste the section of that post with the details of the matches.

Paste this into a Notepad document and clean it up so it looks neat and pretty. Add a little formatting and you now have a template for your LR.

LR in SC2 to me seems much easier than in SC:BW because the observer's screen has so much information you can use. In particular, the timer above the minimap lets you show just how the match is progressing and give a deeper feel to the LR.

My preference for my screen set up is below.

This lets me still see what is going on as I type.

When you LR, a clear and easy format is best. My style of quoting myself was taken from LittLeD (kudos to him/her). It's good because someone just tuning in can see what they've missed as well as keep following the action now. Do note though that after about 10 embedded quotes your posts go wonky and start cutting off older embedded quotes. If this happens, once the match is over you will need to go back and edit out some quote tags in the final post.

During the early game, not much will typically be going on. I use this time to update my notepad, clean old posts to be used in a summary and other miscellaneous tasks.

Sometimes you will have situations where there is a lot of action going on and you don't know what to type. Try and focus on key points of a battle and just give the feel of it. Don't go into too much detail as you probably can't type as fast. Put as much as you can, then hit post. Scroll down, find your post, quote it and then start typing all over again. This can mean you post slightly delayed compared to the actual action, but I find it's worth it.

Feel free to add detail that the commentators miss. Sometimes they will not notice upgrade timings, the current level of upgrades, sneaky tech changes, etc. All of those are useful to mention both to people following your LR and others watching at the same time.

Sometimes you will write a lot and notice that a large amount of time has elapsed since you started. In these cases, it's sometimes useful to add a "it is now X time" at the end of the post.

My favourite player just lost and I am really mad. What should I do?
+ Show Spoiler +
Accept s/he wasn't good enough today and move on.

Any final pieces of advise about posting in general and dealing with QQ?
+ Show Spoiler +

I hope this helps anyone who is wants to get into LR-ing or is just interested in my LR in general.

Wait... LR threads are supposed to contain this? I thought they were for complaining about lag and cheeze and for balance whine! How would I know...

Ah, I see, last 2 sections of your post cover it greatly.

Very good write-up, big thank you for keeping on posting actual live reports in LR threads! (Even though it keeps getting buried in chatter and drowned in torrents of QQ) Link to this post should be stickied above every LR thread

Nice! Your contributions to the LR threads are absolutely outstanding! Keep up the good work, I'll give this a try next time I have time to fully watch a few games.

The people who are interested enough to follow a LR thread, but not interested enough to not prefer watching the VOD are very sparse.
Visual representation:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc

a = I don't give a shit about this match, I won't watch the VOD and I cba to read the LR thread.
b = I kinda care about this game and I'm really bored and should really do something else, ..., fuck I can't watch the stream, oh yeah there's this guy that does pretty LRs. Should I really wade through the piles of shit in the LR thread to find them F5ing all the time? After all it's pretty boring to read about the game in text-format and I really should do something else:/ ... okay fuck it
c = This game is really interesting, if I can't watch it live I'll make sure to watch the VOD, I really wanna know how it went down!

Uh... If you don't like people posting off-topic information in LR threads, ask the mods to make a discussion topic for that series of games. Out of the thousands that post in GSL LR threads, only like 3 of them live report, the rest are just discussing the games, there should be no problem with this.

I dont read live report threads, it's a mess, I prefer irc for that.
But from the past what I've seen as a way is where it's like a blog and then the people comment, but the live reporter just constantly updates the original post.
That way you can do a lot of neat things with the layout, seperate lines, headers for maps, people who just want to read your information can stay on the page and just F5.
Might be something to think about, I've heard your name from other people so I'l take it you are doing great reporting, keep it up!

YES. I <3 this thread very much.

Too often have I walked into an LR thread where there is little to no actual LR-ing going on. Too often have more obscure tournaments in the SC2 Tournaments section gone unloved with no actual LRs.

I look up to the heroes of the BW section to see the golden standard of LR, and I really hope that more people try their hand at actual LR-ing.

Doing an LR makes watching games much more fun and engaging.

We definitely need more live reporting in the LR threads, its hard to actually find the LR posts in that mess. I don't use the LR for every tournament but I can only watch so much, I like LR for when I just don't have time and im just looking for a quick summary of how things went/are going. From there its much easier to decide which vods to watch, the recommended games polls are not always a good representation of what I like.

Nice! Thanks for this, I always wondered how you had some of that extra stuff up so fast (player's name with symbols etc.) I'm always watching on low quality streams so I have a hard time reading the times, but I certainly love seeing them in your live reports.

Good post, some of the garbage posted in LR threads is pretty annoying too read, even more-so if you aren't able to view the games!

Remember, you are entitled to your opinion but there are good ways to get it across and there are bad ways to get it across. Just breathe, and take a minute or two to properly think about how you want to post.

I don't understand the mentality of some people who basically think, hey I didn't like that, so I'm going to go ahead and berate the player and anyone who disagrees with me! Which leads to pointless arguments that aren't needed in LR threads.

TL mods have a hard enough time with people making silly posts, don't be one of the people making them!

I follow the LR threads because I am at work and unable to watch streams, so in the case of GSL etc I am unable to watch VODs either if I'm not paying (which I'm not).

Having to wade through the dross that is 95% of LR threads is really very annoying so it's good to see someone trying to raise the standard of posting.

I personally think it should be fine to discuss particular strategies and their pros/cons/power in LR thread, and sometimes people view that wrongly as balance QQing. There is a difference between "Roach ling all-in is so powerful against protoss, Alicia had no chance by the time he scouted it", and "Zerg is so OP LOL", and sometimes people group those together blindly.

Perfect example is when I commented last night in the Sen Mana match about how the new ling bling infestor style and its variations against protoss are ridiculously powerful and it was good that zergs found something that destroys the current protoss metagame, and everyone jumped on me as a whiner for no reason, which hurts the LR thread just as much as a real whiner.
