![]() secondly I don't think mouse accuracy would be better with your left hand, not nearly as much as having a decent mouse with proper settings would. i don't think your body can be wired specifically so that you have a better "mouse movement" with your left hand than your right evne if you are left handed, handedness just represents a tendency that your body feels more comfortable with initially doing things with, and you can be trained against your own handedness if you put enough effort into it. however with a system as complex as a computer i don't think the body has a "handedness" for that, but i could be wrong. in the end though i think just mass gaming is a more effective way to train your brain to be efficient at something than whichever tendency you happen to have *shrug*

As for catching back up, I would say it would take quite a while. If you've been playing Starcraft for say 10 years, It would probably take you around a year or so to get fully back to comfortable. Its probably gotten quite normal to play with your wrong hand. This is only my natural thought on this subject though. I know nothing about Biology.

On the other hand, you're still pretty damn good, even with using your weaker hand. So unless you have the spare time to switch hands, might as well stick with right handed mousing.

i decided to just stick with what's comfortable to me because not only do you have to learn to use a mouse with your left hand, you have to use a keyboard with your right which just seems so foreign and awkward to me. and yes, everything that involves dexterity has a 'handedness' which includes mouse and keyboard.

Your hands have programmed themselves to work the keyboard with one and the mouse with the other. Of course, you definitely should give it a try.

I can't say I know too much about brain development, but when you're learning and training something, your brain develops extra neurons. Since you're effectively switching sides, you're switching to the different side of the brain for those functions (since the right side of the brain controls the left side of your body and vice versa), which would explain the need for extra practising. I do recall Artosis mentioning in a comment on one of his FPVoDs on Youtube a while back that his mouse accuracy comes from years of gaming. I'm also left handed but I've stuck to the conventional right handed mouse and quite frankly the thought of switching hasn't really occurred to me.

I did that to improve my personality and myself in general , so i think you can do this for perfomance too but this canbe , at first, somethin to feel about yourself. Anyway now you got this in mind, you can never know if you don't switch and it will haunt you forever... but stay on touch with us about that, it's could be cool ![]()

I can kinda relate this to the sport I play. I play golf, at a fairly high level high school wise. I golf right handed despite being left handed because when I was young manufacturers rarely sold left handed clubs and if they did, they were much more expensive, especially for juniors, so I just learned how to golf right handed. However, professionals I see now tell me it was a good move because obviously the left hand if the leading hand in the golf swing on the way down which can lead to a forward shaft lean at impact. This causes me to have more consistent above average ball-striking because I have less of a tendency to "scoop" at the ball. In terms of Starcraft, playing "right handed" may actually be more beneficial because the keyboard hand aka your left and dominant hand could be seen as the more important of the two and the "leading" hand in Starcraft.

I have tried switching to a lefty mouse a few weeks back, and proceeded to drop 10 games. Yeah I probably didn't give it enough time to develop lefty mouse memory, but it was really the right hand that was messing me up. If you game with a left hand mouse, your right has to take over the keyboard, and lets face it, you don't know how to hotkey with your right hand. The keyboard is hand-specific more than the mouse. Yeah you could create custom hotkeys to fit your right hand, but i dont know if you could switch the control button. In order to assign a control group with your right hand, you need to press control with your thumb instead of pinky (or at least I always using pinky). This was the most confusing thing when I first switched, and I just could not deal with it. Besides I always take pride in my hotkeying ability. I figure what I lose in mouse control, I gain in keyboard control. To be honest my lefty trust in the keyboard over the mouse is what made me into the macro player I am today.

And i've been experimenting with switching hands for everything else besides SC2 so my right hand doesn't get too tired in the day.. anyways, the results: my leftie got used to the mouse pretty fast and now i feel pretty comfortable working that way.. the problem is my right hand. It just does not wanna get used to the keyboard shorcuts (that i use a lot, btw). I just keep using both mouse and keyboard with the right hand (releasing the mouse, pressing ctrl+V,going back to the mouse, for example) and it's driving me crazy. (I've been doing that for 2 weeks already and still..) yeah this. ur left hand might get used to the mouse pretty fast, but it will certainly take a ton of time to get your right hand to handle the keyboard as fast and smooth as necessary. also, i think it might actually be an advantage to have the stronger hand on the keyboard, where you usually spend most of your apm. sc2 is not a shooter after all, where aiming is like everything.

The bottom line is that your CNS learns through constant and repetitive practice. Movement patterns (muscle memory) are hardwired into your brain. It will not be simply a matter of weeks, or months before you BEGIN to play normally again.. it will be much, much longer. Infact, I'm pretty willing to believe that since you have used a computer (and played SC2) for so long right handed, achieving the same level of manual dexterity if you switch will be pretty much impossible. There is no reason for your right hand dexterity ceiling to be hindered simply due to you being left handed. If nothing else, your left hand is actually more dexterous than your right, and thus you should technically be able to use the keyboard faster and more accurately than right handed players.

I am pretty sure you would get a faster mouse hand if you switched, however!: Your right hand should have plenty precission for playing, and doing wise mouse movements the extra speed won't really help that much imo. As I see it, starcraft, more than most RTS, rely on short keys and your control of the keyboard, hence having your best hand on the keyboard is not a bad thing at all!! I would not switch, but if you feel you lack mousespeed you should watch how you move your mouse when playing and maximize its effeciency. If you need precission, just do alot of precission exercises - I personally play Minesweeper.

I have thought about creating a guide for this setup with a picture of my desk following on how I have such high APM, but I figured since the reader audience would be so low, there wouldn't really be a point. The only downside is that when you want to use the backspace method to inject or something on the other side of the keyboard, you have to move your hand further to the right or use your pinky/middle fingers which is a little more awkward. But of course it really isn't a disadvantage once you get used to it. Overall, us left-handed witches are way cooler ![]() If you guys have any questions about using your left hand just shoot me a PM.

Lefty deathadder rules. I would suggest at least trying switching your mouse position for a few days to see if there's a major difference. Honestly, switch up your keyboard and mouse hand might actually effect the keyboard hand more for a game like SC then it will effect your mouse hand (but then again, my right hand mouse use is almost on par with my left hand).

To switch hands is very difficult. I tried to play Xbox on Southpaw setting once, and it was ridiculous. It will be very time consuming and frustrating to learn another way to use your hands. The Microsoft 1.1 is a GREAT mouse for left handers (and right), and was the staple mouse in the CS community for years. I recommend it for any lefties. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826105122

So if you were to try to switch to using a mouse left handed it would be extremely difficult and not worth the time or effort. You've probably spent your whole life using mouse with right hand, and keyboard on left while gaming, so a switch would require a whole new set of skills for you to learn and master plus you would have to fight what you've trained yourself to learn.

The right hand (dominant hand) on your mouse protocol existed way before anyone could have even imagined the simultaneous use of mouse/keyboard that would go into what is modern day gaming. There is no reason to assume that dominant hand on the mouse is ideal for Starcraft. It should also be noted that handedness is not nearly as binary as people would like to believe. I write, eat, bat, bowl and play guitar lefty. I pitch/throw and play tennis right-handed. Then there are certain things you just can't make yourself do with the other hand. It is much more cost-effective to learn guitar righty (more instruments, you can play other people's etc.) but I hit a mental block when trying to learn right handed. It felt wrong and I could not make any progress. When I picked up a left handed instrument it just made more sense to me mechanically. I imagine people hit that same block with using a mouse. I think that if you were playing a FPS professionally, it might be something worth looking into. Since you play an RTS and have never had any sort of block chances are you get more benefit out of your setup than a righty.

I am right handed and use my left hand for the mouse, because that's the way I used it as a kid. I've actually felt the same way as you at one point but ultimately am too lazy to switch to my right hand. I feel like my left hand has been trained so much (I started using the computer at around age 7... and I'm 22 now) that it's not worth it to put the effort to make the switch.

Since you already play righty, keep doing so. You've formed the muscle memory needed to play, and switching would mean rebuilding those patterns starting from 0.

I started thinking about it, is it possible that it is hindering my Starcraft skills? Would I have better mouse accuracy if I used my left hand all this time? Also, if I decided to switch hands, how long do you think it would take to catch up to where I am now. I have no idea how the brain works and if both hands are equal or if one side is inherently better than the other :S. So what do you other lefties do, and does anyone know anything about this subject? The deciding point is which hand you wank with. I'm left handed too, using right hand for mouse control as I've learned to use that hand. I doubt it would be any benefit to learn to use the left hand.

Meditate for a little. Like, chill in a chair or on your bed and start feeling your body. Fell everything about it - pulse, breath, what is going on. This is a very common exercise for people related to sports, especially swimming or running. Now start to feel the differences that occurs to your body. Chances are that your body is nearly symmetrical and you won't feel much difference. Some people, however, have a real different feeling for their right or left side - these are the called true lefties or righties. Usually the most used part of the body is the most active one and also weighs more and "are felt" more than the other, less used, part. I am a true righty. I cannot use my left side for absolutely nothing. If I could have two rights, I'd probably play better on my keyboard. My left side of the body feels like a feather to me, I barely can feel it like the right side. Unless you are a true lefty - that is, you can feel your left side much better, and your right side is nearly useless for most activities - there is no reason to try and use the lefty configuration for your computer. You could try it out for a week, and if you feel any comfort, you continue trying. Obviously you won't be doing things as fast or accurate as with your right hand right off the bat, but if you feel you are getting better faster than you'd expect, continue on it. If you don't feel comfort, just give up on it. You probably are more used to the right side when on computer and changing hands won't make any difference. But give it a shot, it is always worth the try ![]()

For me micro mechanics aren't hardwired in my head. I hear a subconsciously hear a clicking beat before I need to do an action, so the timing still perfect. The only thing I see different right now is my right hand is terrible at typing and I have the urge to bring my left hand to the keyboard, and my left wrist is much weaker. Also, it appears tilting my body slightly to the right helps accuracy. Edit: even after five minutes I can feel my clicks becoming more accurate and fluent.

This is an article on true left-handed gaming I wrote not too long ago. If you have any questions please post them in the thread. I've been gaming as a true lefty all my life. The topic doesn't get much attention, but the audience is very low so it is expected.
