Honestly what is the point of messaging a pro for any purpose other than if they've invited you to do so because of paid coaching sessions or something else legitimate? You aren't going to get much info back from gameplay questions and if you do it's probably going to be really general and short so they can get rid of you. You aren't going to make friends with them and insert yourself into the pro scene on your wit and personality either. They have better things to do than close 30 messages every time they get out of a game.

Just exercise some self control otherwise you make yourself look really loony.
This is well below quality expected of a post in any forum. -Empyrean

As long as u don't send it in game, i'm sure most of them are indifferent about people messaging them. Pros in the sc community seem to be pretty down to earth =]

Its funny because some people don't realise how annoying it is to talk to people in a game. Should be a chat option to store all the PM's until after the game.

No, its never okay and is actually creepy. You don't know these people and they're too busy to chat with the thousands of fans that they have while they're trying to play the actual game. This is doubly true for people who have had to buy extra copies of the game to escape from internet stalkers.

I personally think that its fine to message pros on bnet just wishing them luck in a tourney or telling them amazing game blah blah blah complements basically is I would like to think alright. But messaging asking for games or annoying them to death is beyond stupid. Most of them make their emails public to ask questions people should use that ^_^

I messages IncontroL once to see if he wanted to join a group. He said thx but he was in a coaching session. Seemed like a nice guy.

I figure if anyone doesn't want to be messaged, he'll just set his status to busy. It would be nice if there were more settings, such as 'busy for everyone not on my friends list,' but the system is solid enough as it is.

Obviously you're always going to have trolls and stalkers, but the typical fan is just going to say something nice in a single message, which the pro can read or not, and respond to or not.

I would like to hear from more pros in this thread, though. Socke, thanks for your input.
Protoss is the easy race, but I'm sticking with it.

Yeh depends on situation, who it is, reason for messaging etc but generally it's ok provided you have and excercise common sense (imo).

One of my friends added a few of the 'not quite so well known but still pro' people to spectate some matches to learn how to play better and what not, turns out this doesn't seem to be particularly uncommon either.

I think it's totally based on individual, however I'd imagine for anyone it gets old after time.

Personally, I get annoyed when people randomly message me to play and I have no idea who they are.

It never hurts to share love and show some support. If they don't like or appreciate it they will tell you. But I think you should be able to talk to the people you are fans of - there's no such thing as too much love. Unless it's obsessive, and requires a restraining order. But this is just words

some of the not so well known pros might like it, because it makes them feel admired. But then most of the time it is annoying, because of the way bnet messaging works. A better way is just leave a message for them through other methods that doesn't involve a blinking alert on their screen.

Wow what a classy guy. If there were a sc2 pro-gamer worker union he would make a good president.

I would avoid messaging pros unless it was just to say something small, like good luck and I'm a fan or something similar. Don't expect an answer, these guys are very busy (which is why there's so good). I would also try to avoid messaging them during a game at all costs, this is their lively hood so disrupting their practice time could hurt more than help! Just be courteous and act how you would like to be treated. Personally I wouldn't mind a small and friendly message between games or the sort, however I can understand the other side of things, it could potentially be really annoying.

Please don't message the top players unless it's for a very good reason. Even though there are a lot of guys who are nice and will answer you, this is just because they are nice not because it is not annoying. Instead if you are really a fan just visit a live tournament sometime it is a much nicer setting to meet a player and ask him some questions.

Something I've been wondering is if tournaments enforce busy. Otherwise what is to stop somebody from messaging their favorite player during the game from watching the stream?

"Hidden exp at 12 o clock."

During MLG somebody in #teamliquid IRC claimed to have done this, and the player in question immediately went to scout for hidden expos. Seems fucking lame if that's true.
