Thank you GOM!
That's right, everyone's favorite Terran genius has been diagnosed with that disease many of us fondly remember from childhood. It's unsure how this will affect his GSL bid, as chickenpox can be fairly contagious if you aren't already immune to it. It also tends to be worse the later you get it in life (sorry Dario ). It's all up to GOM and the doctors now on whether or not he continues to play.
The good news is that Korean pros have gotten chickenpox before and have still been allowed to play while wearing a stylish mask. Bisu himself played a match a few years ago while fighting off the need to itch those annoying spots. This is definitely a good precedent in TLO's case.
Needless to say, the entire TL community is very sad to hear this. As one of the few foreigners left in the tournament, anything that could potentially end his run at the top prize short of a loss to another player is disappointing. We all wish him the very best and hope he gets well soon! TLO fighting!
I was hoping to use this thread as a sort of giant "Get Well Soon" card for TLO.
Source: TLO's facebook fan page.
Edit: Here's the confirmation from Nazgul. It sounds like it certainly is not as bad as it could be, which is definitely good news.

That is today we came home from the hospital a few hours ago and Dario was diagnosed with chickenpox. I look forward to receiving full medical records from every pro gamer in the starcraft 2 scene.
PS: Get better TLO. I want to see you destroy korea in a bloody inferno of destruction.

Oh noes : (
I am rather surprised he never got the Chicken Pox. I remember back in elementary school that when one kid got it, a bunch of kids quickly catch it soon after.
I hope he gets better soon though.
|
|
|
He got Chicken pox?! LOL! I'm surprised he got it now though. I only hear it's a lot worse when you get older, not sure, but yes. That sucks. Oh well. He'll just be itchy for the next few days.
|
But at least it's just chicken pox, and not the adult version? (called Belt rose over here) Because let me tell you that's a bitch and a half to deal with. Never got chicken pox as a child, got the other one at 21 and I'm going to rub my childrens face into the first chicken poxy face I see at daycare because that's awful. Took me almost 2 weeks before I could think straight again, at least if it's chicken pox it will hopefully be a short incubation and he should be aböe to get back to nerding asap.

just adding to the legacy imagine if he grinds through this w/ practice and stellar performances
|
dang that sucks, if they think he's still contagious I don't see why he couldn't just play from home though maybe? I mean, it'd still affect his play but hopefully he could still do well enough to advance.
|
Ye it really sucks that he gets it now, since of what I heard when you get older it generally manifests itself "harder" then when your young.
Does anyone know how long it actually takes for a person of his age to get rid of it?
Well anyway, I hope he gets well soon, and he can finish the gsl.
|
...WHAT?! I don't know if I want to laugh or cry. This was totally unexpected, slightly hilarious, and quite unfortunate.
|
So instead you want your kids to get shingles later in life?
|
That's pretty bad. Even if he can somehow play his match, it'll be difficult for him to practice as well for the next week-and-a-half.
|
Very unfortunate *insert super sad face here* I hope that he gets better soon and GOM lets him play.

Yeah, I honestly laughed out loud when I saw this thread, just at the sheer unexpectedness of it.
But really, that sucks. Get better soon, TLO!

Wow that sucks. Hope it doesn't affect his performance to much =\

It's a plot to infect the other pro gamers and have a competitive edge.. totally kidding. This sucks and I wish Dario the best in his recovery.

that sucks I haven't had it either and hope to never get it xD.
Hopefully this doesn't interfere with sc2 too much!

As an adult that can put you in the hospital.
|
Ah this is horrible news! I really hope it isn't too severe as it can be as you get older. I thought most people get immunization shots for this now, I guess I was wrong.
Get well soon TLO! I hope to see you fighting in the RO32.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but pics?

Wow what are the odds! Truly sucks getting chickenpox at any stage but when you think you won't have to worry about it any longer it is the absolute worst. Hope your symptoms are mild and you recover quickly. Hopefully GSL doesn't pull you out of the tourney but if so you'll definitely own it up next time.

It's really good to hear that he is able to practice. I'd have a hard time believing that he would not be allowed to compete in the GSL because of chickenpox, but I would question how productive his practice will be since it's quite hard to focus when you are sick like that, not to mention that you are so exhausted that you begin suffering diminishing returns very quickly.
I'm surprised he didn't get an immunity shot for that though before you guys went to Korea. I remember when I went to China we had to get every shot in the book, and my sister had to get a shot for chickenpox, even though she already got a similar shot as an infant.
|
Oh shit :/ he's done awesome in the GSL so far and it would be a shame to see it ruined by chickenpox. Nice to hear that at least he isn't affected by the symptoms too severely. Hope you get better soon!

aww that sucks so much hfor him, hopefully he'll get better soon.

Did anyone see the southpark episode where the Native Americans tried to buy the town to make a super highway to their casino? And they gave all the townspeople blankets, Then the townspeople got small pox?
Also notice how all the Koreans gave TLO blankets before he played to keep himself warm?

Most people I know got chicken pox when they were a kid, so build an immunity to it, so this is kind of surprising. I hope he gets over it quickly.

A pox party is a party held by parents for the purpose of infecting their children with childhood diseases, most commonly chickenpox, thus acquiring some immunity to the disease.[1] According to the Washington Post, parents who expose their children to the virus in this manner believe that this method is "safer and more effective than using vaccines."[2] Similar ideas have been applied to other diseases such as measles. In the case of chicken pox, and also some other diseases such as mumps and hepatitis A, the course of the disease is typically less severe in children than adults.
Hopefully TLO is in tiptop shape for the next round of GSL

If he plays with the mask, it would be so awesome, we can call him the surgeon terran!

I got chicken pox at 19 and it fucking sucked. I have scars on my face and back from them. Getting them older better be worse than getting them as a kid cuz that was torture and I wouldn't wish that on any child.
Good luck TLO. Fight the urge to itch and focus on your game. I will cheer for you!

Awww.. I read this earlier in PhoenixWeRRas stream and it made me frown. TLO is such a neat guy, so I hope he gets well soon and doesn't have too much trouble with adult chicken pox. Best wishes if you see this TLO!
|
Get better soon! You need to be in top condition for ro32!
|
Get well soon, TLO!
|
Get well man, you gonna win GSL even with chickenpox!
|
TO HELL WITH YOU CHICKENS AND YOUR SILLY POX!!
gg TLO :_:
|
|
chickenpox at his age, isn't that kinda unusual? Hope you'll be able to play we all cheer on you!!!
|
I had chickenpox when i was younger, and it sucked then. With everyone saying it's worse as an adult... i just cringe.
I guess people that are now in their early 20s are in that bad situation where they just missed getting the chickenpox vaccine with the rest of the normal childhood vaccines (since it's still relatively new).
Get better soon TLO.
|
So the Koreans have to resort to Biological warfare eh? TLO Fighting!
|
Bummer news! Amazing that he never had it as a kid. Hope you can still win in the next round TLO. Gute besserung.
|
Get well soon TLO! Hope to see you dominate more in the GSL!
|
Talk about timing.
Get better man!
|
get better soon for sure. yeah i know it can be really bad for some people who get it later in life
|
Don't you usually get vaccinated if you don't get it when you're a child.
|
I got chickenpox at 18 years old when my g/f worked at a childcare center. It was horrible - it is not cute little red dots like the cartoon, very very gross - and they appear everywhere - and I mean, everywhere (inside the mouth included)
|
Get well man. Really hope you get to play!
|
Cheering up time!
|
Chickenpox fightiiiiiing ! At least I hope he will be allowed to.
|
Get well soon man... I heard its pretty bad as your older.

I got vaccinated and was exposed to it as a child and then didn't get it til I was 23.

Hope he feels better soon. I cannot really support someone playing SC2 competitively while he has some serious illness :/
This exact same thing happened to me aswell. And that even though i know the term but since i didnt expect it at all i just didnt think about it.
I seriously hope the illness takes the mildest course possible with you Dario and that you get better soon.
There is nothing worse than a disease, broken bones and bruises are things one can deal with but a disase ... there is just nothing you can do.

"TLO Contracts Chickenpox"
Anyone else first thought that TLO left Team liquid for a clan/team called "Chickenpox" or that he somehow recruited a player called "Chickenpox" to TL???

Get well soon Dario!
I had chicken pox in my teens and it was pretty annoying but I got to skip school for a few weeks, but then again I didn't have to practice for a tournament :/

I got chicken pox later in life (around the age TLO is) and it SUCKS. When you're that old and get it, you will be down and out. I will be really surprised if he plays the next round of the GSL even if GOM lets him play. He's going to be in a really bad way. He's not going to get any better any time soon unfortunatley. For me, I got them in my throught and was puking up puss. Yes, it's that bad.
|
I had chicken pox when I was 19, it kinda sucked but I could still see him playing. The only thing that would make it hard would be the high fever, but besides the fever for a few days I didn't have any other symptoms really (red itchy dots not included of course).

Did you know a late onset of chickenpox could lead to the development of the herpes-simplex-1 (cold sores) or herpes-simplex-2 (genital herpes) forming within TLO's body? The varicella virus operates in the body as either chickenpox, herpes-simplex-1 or herpes-simplex-2 and thus if the chickenpox decides to mutate into one of the herpes-simplex viruses, it could be a lot more damaging.

TLO is like the starcraft McGyver. If anyone can somehow change his fever into some kind of lethal weapon of mass destruction its this guy.

Oh noesss! Hope he can still kick some ass at the GSL!!

Unfortunately even if he is allowed to play - the chickenpox - depending on how harshly it affects him, will likely adversely affect his play. However, there may be some time till his Ro32 match giving him potentially enough time to get better and/or a special concession made to postpone his match until the end of the round, may allow him to fully recover before he even has to play again.
|
TLO has informed me that his match has been moved to Monday to allow him further time to recover.
