Now that it seems JulyZerg really is FantaPrime and it looks like he's transitioning into SC2 fulltime, it got me thinking. This really mirrors Beckham's move to MLS. I remember before Beckham landed at MLS, the league was still sputtering, littered with tons of aging Europrean/Latin players (Carlos Valderrama anyone?). As we saw in SC2 beta, tons of older BW players played as well. As MLS became more mature, we started developing American talent, specifically one Landon Donovan (ie. IdrA).

Fastforward a few years, there were rumors that Beckham wanted to move Stateside. He was a little older, got a little slower, but thought he could still play. When he finally announced the move, MLS really picked up the pace. There were rumblings of more high profile signings, until Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez both signed for Red Bulls.

With JulyZerg, I really think the floodgates will open. Sure there have been current progamers who switched to SC2, but it's because they were benchwarmers. No one up until now has JulyZerg's resume. JulyZerg has singlehandedly given GSL legitimacy. I can now see progamers who might not be at the top of their game anymore, but still can play, contemplate the move. We will wait and see, but I it's now not inconceivable to have someone like Bisu (who has lost his form) take a shot at SC2.

Of course, Beckham eventually went on loan to AC Milan, so JulyZerg may switch back as well, but at least the possibilities remain.

And besides, both JulyZerg and David Beckham are super sexy, it's no surprise they have so much in common.

I have to say that pretty weird analogy :o But whatever works for you.
It's nice to see JulyZerg playing SC2, hopes he does SauronZerg strat, loved that. Also I kinda doubt he will go back to bw. I think that path is over for him.

I don't think your analogy works at all. July isn't even in this first tournament, so how can he give GSL legitimacy? I am sure a lot of BW players would switch to SC2 but can't because the teams don't want/are not allowed to switch.

or they don't want to learn a "new" game when they're already making a bunch of money on BW

This analogy is depressing. The MLS is a mere shadow of its competitors and is still awaiting profitability in what has so far been a lackluster moneysink.

Though actually now that I think about it, probably an apt comparison...

I can definitely see the comparison between Julyzerg's move and David Beckham's move. Problem is that in this case, FIFA is trying to kill off all the European Leagues and force all players to play in the MLS because it can have a wider audience maybe...

July is still young though.. Like 24? His career started when he was 16 and that was 2002 or 2003

beckham is a celebrity, not a footballer, it's only housewives who think he's good at soccer.

i'd like to think that julyzerg will be a good player, not a prestige old fart.

I wish the best for JulyZerg. Him dominating Best 3-0 in EVER OSL 2008 was what got me watching Professional BW, but unfortunately, JulyZerg hasn't done much in OSL since winning the Golden Mouse. That's 2 years....I hope he shows the new players what Tushin is all about!

Insightful post, but I entered this thread thinking this would be a parody of a "JulyZerg = Fantaprime?" thread based on the fact that there's no proof that he is, indeed, Fantaprime. (Or, if there is proof, it only emerged recently and I missed it :x)

I think the "manager" for Prime himself said that Fantaprime is JulyZerg :T

With all due respect, MLS still a league with aging latin/european players with low worldwide level. So i hope Julyzerg is not like Beckham.

Doesn't this analogy rely on the fact that MLS isnt complete crap and like the worlds 10th best league.

there's no comparison. MLS is such a bad league. Beckham signing to Galaxy was one hell of lolcoaster too, with the multi million dollar signing actually turning out to be 'normal pay', then leaving, then coming back, then leaving again, lol.

beckham is a good player, always has been, but julyzerg saw a serious slump that we didnt see him recover out of for BW. we've even seen cella beat him a couple times on cella's stream (if indeed, july is fanta).

I think his three OSL championships bring more legitimacy to the tournament than every other player combined x1000 He is by far the most accomplished player, and the only BW pro who has accomplished anything and transfered games while still active.

Out of all gamers,
Tushin is my favorite.
Jaedong is second.

I hope July wins.
JULY VS IDRA REMATCH?!
That would be too sick.
A build is not a guess, an estimation or a hunch, a feeling, or a foolish intuition. A build is a dependable, unwavering, unarguably accurate, portrayer of your ambition.

Beckham played the same game in a different country.
It would be like JulyZerg flying to Europe to compete in BW ESL.

Plus JulyZerg is one of the greatest BW players ever.
Beckham is closer to Tossgirl.

I don't know what more is needed for SC2 to be taken seriously than freaking July playing it competitively, and NaDa giving a showmatch with TLO. It doesn't get any better than that.
