Blizzard has gone all-out trying to get people to share content on Facebook.
Here's an excerpt from the FAQ:
How can I help advance the progress bar?
The progress bar will advance when you take the entrance exam, submit propaganda posters to the art contest, or click on any of the Facebook Like or Share buttons found throughout this website. You can Like and Share as many things as you wish; each time you Like or Share something, it advances the bar. Keep in mind that as more content is unlocked and as more propaganda poster submissions are added, there will be more and more items to Like and Share.
Edit: tweaked some wording to reflect that I am not really for or against this whole thing. After all, there are prizes for good artists, and that's always fun.

To generate hype..... Sort of is a proven tactic in business.
If you've ever used Facebook, those quiz things are all over the place. Like what color are you, what star wars character are you. It's really not a big deal nor does it take a lot of work.
Why are they crazy for doing free, effective advertising? Some PR guy probably did this, as long as they don't take up developer hours with it, it's fine by me.

Very true. You would not see shit like this is stupid people did not fall for it. I bet money that thing will have 10k shares on Facebook by tomorrow...
Don't get me wrong, I am actually a social media marketer by trade and education. Blogs, Twitter, and Facebook are a big part of my real-person job. I just feel though, as a player, that I don't need all my friends from high school and distant relatives to know that I'm playing SC2 all damn day. =P
I'd rather play with anonymous people and kill other anonymous people all day long. Facebook makes it unnecessarily personal.
Example: When casting things for iCCup I had a pretty large friends list because I had to be able to invite people to tournament games and showmatches or whatever, but when someone whispered me in a game I had no idea who they were half the time because I know them as their in-game name and not "Brian Fellows" or whatever the case may be. At least let players like me have some sort of menu option for toggling real names and in-game names.
Facebook is a great thing for people to communicate, but many people that play games don't want their friends to know they play because by most people it is looked down upon and will cause teasing.
I think it is a interesting idea to try to get gaming more of a mainstream thing by having something that is already mainstream integrated into the game and hopeing to transfer some of the people on facebook to SC2. It is also a free way to advertise just as a shirt with Nike printed on the front, people will see that their friend is playing sc2 or friends and that game will be on their mind as well as the company that made it prompting them to buy the game.
The more shares it gets the more publicity the game gets, the more publicity the game gets the more people play it. The more people that play it the more people want to watch it ... see where I'm going?
Why trash facebook if it potentially makes e-sports stronger? The whole strength in every main stream sport is that the "everyman" has probably played it at one time or another so its much more fun to watch for them.

Pack your bags, citizen! We are ready to save you from your bleak and irrelevant existence. You've proven that you have a tough-as-neosteel attitude, possess the guts to complete an assignment no matter the cost, and are about as smart as the creep I scraped off my boot this morning. A package from Augustgrad will be arriving shortly with your first set of stimpacks. Give 'em a try. But go easy, they've got a kick. We're shipping you off to the barracks for brain-panning at 0600 tomorrow morning. It's mostly harmless, and you will… well… we will prevail. Prepare for the infantry, maggot! You are hereby recruited to become a marine, the ballistic alloy shield of the emperor's expansive colonies!
I would have been happy to have gotten a firebat if this was SC1. In SC2, I'm jobless ;-;
You Have Been Chosen To Become a Firebat
Well, look who has an appetite for destruction… or self-destruction. We'd just as soon incarcerate your kind for recklessly endangering our way of life, but we trust your insatiable desire to incinerate living things will prove valuable on the battlefield after a bit of "resoc" on Korhal IV. Never heard of it? It's like a vacation for the mind. Report to the nearest barracks at 0600 tomorrow morning, as we want you to don the CMC-660 Heavy Combat Suit and go light up some bad guys. So long as you go where you're told, you'll have your chance to quench that carnal, destructive thirst of yours. Go wild. Show the enemy what happens when they denounce the emperor's authority. Your questionable ethics and lust for destruction make you the ideal candidate for the Dominion's firebats
The best part about this contest is the high resolution unit portrait gifs.
edit:
It is a 'collective' progress bar, so as players continue to share and more people enlist with the dominion, more unlockables become available...and we got some cool stuff in that vault too.
-Karune boy.
Thats kinda neat I guess. Free SC2 promotional media. I mean, it isn't a big deal, but it isn't like its being done by the b-net 2.0 team whos suppose to be workin on chat channels, probably marketting.
I think it's funny that it's a collective progress bar supposedly based on 'likes' and 'shares,' when really it's more likely just set to a timer and the last unlockable goody gets released the same week that the retail version comes out.

Yeah this is most likely the case. If the progress was based on the likes and shares, we'll probably unlock that baby in just 2-3 days flat. Does anyone know what the unlockables are? Perhaps just pictures?

Its not that people are anti-facebook integration necessarily, but more that blizzard invested time and resources into a feature that the competitive community aren't in dire need of, while neglecting useful features that will make b.net2.0 working and functional for high-level tournaments and competitive play.

Like the single-player?
If it gets people into Starcraft, it's a good thing. If you think Facebook integration is the thing keeping Blizzard from implementing X feature you want, you're crazy.
All in all its a nifty idea to help their hype marketing campaign. There should be an explanation at the end of your profile test that says "ps you will not be able to chat with any of your other soldiers"

take out the writing on the left, and the terran symbol (or do a decent PS job on it) and this would actually look pretty good.
Not bad for a five-minute photoshop job, eh?
The writing on the left stays, since that was more of the purpose of the thing, rather then the words 'Security' and 'Trust in Mengsk', both of which were afterthoughts. I'm thinking several of these, but I'll work on placing the Mengsk quotes better.
As for the symbol, yeah it kinda detracts, don't it. For the next one, I'll whip up a more symplistic version using the official one as a base.

wow.
Just because someone people do it doesn't make it easy. Killing yourself, no matter how sucky your life is, is pretty hard.
The Dominion military is always in search of brilliant individuals capable of formulating complex battle strategies. You are not one of these people. But if there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's that sometimes you just need someone who likes to smash things. From your test results, you're a perfect fit for this role. What better way to satisfy your borderline psychotic thirst for destruction than in the comfy pilot seat of one of the Dominion's most powerful weapons to date: the Thor! With this neosteel behemoth at your command, you'll be given free rein to obliterate as many of our enemies' air and ground forces as your uncaring little heart desires. Leave any notions of finesse behind you -- if you had any in the first place -- and report to the nearest recruitment center on Korhal IV immediately.
Wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?
No. I believe the biggest factor that prevents humans from being entirely good is a lack of reason to.
Scenario: two guys stranded on some piece of land (LIKE MY NEW MAP OR SOMETHING lul jk), there is only enough food in one hidden location for one person to survive until help comes. Sharing will make you both die before help comes. One guy finds the food first and keeps it for himself. Meanwhile, the second guy knows that the first guy already found the food, but the first guy refuses to give food to the second guy.
The second guy has two options: steal the food, or not steal the food. If he chooses to steal the food, he has done something wrong and will "get whats coming to him" (die or w/e). If he chooses to simply starve, he has done the "good" thing and will "get whats coming to him" (more food would mysteriously show up, OR the first guy will give the food to the second guy, in which case he is also doing the right thing and will also not starve (in a world where everything is fair)).
Unless, of course, being sent to this piece of land was a "consequence" of previously misdeeds, in which case you are either extremely stupid or utterly ignorant of the governing dynamics of your existence, in which case it would only be "fair" if you had everything you need to begin with, since you are at an inherent disadvantage.
Reality: same two guys, same scenario. Have you ever been in a life-and-death situation? Well, actually, I have. Trust me, IT IS EXCRUTIATINGLY DIFFICULT TO DECIDE TO DIE, it takes more will power than most people on this plant have to spare for such a cause Period. My point being, the second guy WILL DO WHAT IT TAKES to secure the food and his survival *Points to the lack of reason to be a perfectly good person*, including stealing and killing (stealing would be killing in this scenario). So the second guy who killed the first guy just to survive, should be killed by the massive Polar Bear that's been watching him... 'cause the Polar Bear needs to survive too. It's only fair.

You can do that on any decent forum, but apparently its too complicated for Blizzard to implement OR they just want to force their vision on their customers. Giving out personal information over the internet is done too much already, so we should do our utmost to stop it with this game we all love. The customers should be king and they should be protected from harm as much as possible. Not only hackers are trying to harm us, but information-gathering companies as well ...

Have you ever dreamt of exploring distant planets and then working overtime there for minimum wage? Well, your dreams have been answered, pardner! It just so happens that the Dominion has a use for your undying loyalty and pathetic fear of the battlefield frontlines. You're ordered to report to the command center on Mar Sara at 0600 tomorrow morning, as we're strapping you into one of our T-280 Space Construction Vehicles! The only exotic planets you'll be seeing are the ones we need to establish a stronghold on and wipe the enemy from. You'll serve your emperor well by becoming a glorified construction worker. You are hereby recruited as an SCV pilot to maintain the infrastructure of our military outposts, supply trains, and support buildings. Now go get 'em!
ehhh this is just helping Blizzard, honestly I would if I had the time, but I'm really busy right now, so I can't. Sorry Blizzard =( EDIT: And FFS no one cares if you have a firebat, especially if the majority has one too.
It's just hype. No harm, no foul. I got Viking in the entrance exam. The propaganda contest sounds like a good way to kill some time while waiting for the beta to come back up.

The Dominion military secret ops is constantly looking for those individuals who can fit into a life size hydralisk suit. Your big shoulders and ability to spit far distances were key deciding factors in this role. You will go around town slaughtering families and leaving children as orphans so that they will feel safe when we come to defend and protect them. What better way to serve The Dominion? I'm a gamer, and I love gaming. I want to take part in most of the stuff Blizzard creates, for entertainment purposes.
I don't think there's any need for me going around sharing "I Liek SC2" on facebook, gamers will find out about it anyway.
I'm proud of being a gamer, too, but people I barely know might not understand what gaming is, and I think explaining it to them in person is much better. They may even be prejudiced towards gamers, and why should I suffer from that when all I want to do is take part in some content on Blizzards site?
Everyone knows that creating a viral experience NEVER works if your in the customers faces. Do something cool, fun, different or plain crazy, and it will spread like wildfire!
E.g. Googles commercial about Chrome: Cool, new, different: And Operas response was Crazy and fun:
That's why those two worked, not because they had a million progress bars and "link to facebook" button.

It is lame because we now have fanboys "jump the bandwagon" and blindly follow wherever Blizzard is leading them. Its like in the old tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and no one (well hardly anyone) has the willpower to resist the propaganda. They even shove the obvious propaganda into your face and you like it ... and all the while they delay answering the concerns which were raised about the state of Battlenet 2.0 ...
Its the same thing as when the whole thing about the identifier being bad (because it was not shown, even in the replay) came up and it got replaced by Facebook and email friends. Blizzard is again NOT addressing / fixing the most pressing problem OR they arent telling us, which would be a PR blunder of epic proportions. The technology for LAN already exists in the game, but it is locked and unlocking the regions shouldnt be hard either, so only chat channels might require some larger amount of programming, so until these important things are fixed / corrected all cutesy fancy stuff is lame, because they are simply diversions from the issue that is the quality of the game and the gaming experience.
Not really sure what they want for the poster contest, but since there's no limit on the number of submissions I'll probably send a bunch in, already submitted like 6 that I made today. Working on this totally sick poster that will take a while, but I expect to be awesome :D

Honestly I am liking this change int he story setting up the 1984-esque society for the Terran Dominion it is pretty perfect for an already pretty awesome story.
Thinking of joining the art competition, I’ve got a ton old of generic male and female 3d models I can recycle. They need re texturing though, also need to make some armor and weapons.
A few days to maybe a week of work, though since I’m way out of practice it will probably take more time than that. If I manage to turn out something half decent I’ll post the pictures here

I reccomend everyone go listen to the liberty radio piece, i know you've heard it a billion times in the beta, but thats only the first minute or so! Just listen to this epic piece of music, and remember that SC2 is just around the corner.
I think I recognize the Sara System Blues "We Weren't Angels" from ingame too. I absolutely love how it has that Cowboy Bebop/Firefly sound to it. In fact, I think most of the Terran game-play music must be based on Firefly to some degree.
whatever. good on blizzard finding a way to get more pre-release hype and free advertising. I quit face book months ago though, so this effects me not.
I got a ghost :D And regarding Blizzards implementation of facebook, I think it is a good thing for the most part. I'm pretty bad at SC2, and the more bad people facebook can convince to get SC2 the better it will be for me in the long run.
Reasoning: This thing has unlocked 1 new thing a day recently, if it continutes the last one will be released July 6th. Blizzard has said the best thing will be last. Blizzard has also said beta will back early July and last 2 weeks. July 6th is clearly early July and if it were to start on July 6th and last 2 weeks that would leave 1 week before release which seems like good timing. Therefore I think unlockable 20 is the beta is back, and it will be released on July 6th.

the beta being back doesn't benefit everyone? i think if i was a die hard sc2 fan that didn't have the beta and tried as hard as i could to unlock stuff on a sc dominion website, i'd be pretty ticked unlocking a beta for everybody but myself. i'm leaning more towards a video that has some spoilers or some sort of announcement like how the top 8 ranks in each division will play out. idk we'll see though. gawd i want the beta back up

I'm not sure all my relatives, random people who are researching the family name or people I once went to school with could give two shits about SC2 cross site promotional spam. I don't blame them, I like the game but I don't want more spam to my email reminding me of Facebook crap.
By the looks of it.. Looks like they made a full cinematic about it.. Cause we see scenes of the SC1 recap video in the commercial, which is fully animated.
lol, in that video it says 'no trace of her remained' meanwhile showing on the screen, a drawing of her busted c-10 canister rifle and a footprint. and damn, too bad this picture has that shit written on it, would be a cool desktop or something if it wasn't. http://us.media.blizzard.com/starcraft2/dominion/unlockables/raynors-raiders.jpg

It makes a lovely wallpaper, the text just gives it a lovely nostalgic feel.
when I did my thing there were 31k people liking it on sc2 and it was at 49%, now there are 36k and it's at 57%, so it's like every 1500 people or so we get another unlock.

Hello StarCraft fan! Welcome to 12 years ago! Enjoy your stay.
I really hope 100% is some super amazingly pimp video. i really liked how they pretty thoroughly covered the sc terran campaign, kinda annoying they 'rushed' thru the other 5 campaigns tho, they atleast coulda separated the last two vanilla campaigns and the 3 broodwar ones :\
