An Open Letter About Female Coachesby Pau Gasol
In 37 years, I can honestly say, I’ve never once thought of my mom as a “female” doctor.
To me, she has always just been … a doctor.
And a great one, too. But if you think I’m writing this to argue why Becky is qualified to be an NBA head coach … well, you’re mistaken. That part is obvious: One, she was an accomplished player — with an elite point guard’s mind for the game. And two, she has been a successful assistant for arguably the greatest coach in the game. What more do you need? But like I said — I’m not here to make that argument. Arguing on Coach Hammon’s behalf would feel patronizing. To me, it would be strange if NBA teams were not interested in her as a head coach. “But the NBA? The NBA is different.”
First, I’ve just gotta tell you: If you’re making that argument to anyone who’s actually played any high-level basketball, you’re going to seem really ignorant. But I also have a simple response to it — which is that I’ve been in the NBA for 17 years. I’ve won two championships … I’ve played with some of the best players of this generation … and I’ve played under two of the sharpest minds in the history of sports, in Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich. And I’m telling you: Becky Hammon can coach. I’m not saying she can coach pretty well. I’m not saying she can coach enough to get by. I’m not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA’s male coaches. I’m saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period.

Fans are more than ready (assuming she's any good), but players are not, and might never be (because their idiocy regarding basketball knowledge is encouraged by the media). We see this with every basketball head coach search. Ex-players are constantly floated and given multiple chances. The Mark Jackson should be hired song never seems to end. Kenny from TNT got an interview for the Knicks job. An objectively pretty good coach was forced out of CLE in favor of Lue.
The examples go on and on. And its because, most NBA players think only other NBA players actually know anything about basketball. The opposite is, of course, true, and if we only elevated scouts and coaches based on some magical objective standard there would probably be only like 1-2 GMs and Coaches with NBA experience. NFL coaching and management has already trended in that direction.

Kenny Smith has no actual coaching experience. He's be a worse and less player-friendly Jason Kidd. If he gets any gig (I think Fiz got the NY one), it will be because of some exNBA player clout than anything.

Its not like Woj is getting interviews to be the a GM even though he already knows all of them and what they do.
And that's not even taking into account how so many of the worst broadcasters and analysts got the job just from being players.

The Celtics are for real. Regardless of this year's results, I'm excited about next year.

Dang I totally missed it. Stevens coached this team to perfection. The Celtics just have barely enough firepower to be at most a decent playoffs, but they are quick, athletic, disciplined, AND HUNGRY! Stevens is the power stone that unlocked their potential. They played like 2014 Spurs without the superstars.
Although Cavs still have Lebron and lopsided game 1 victories do not guarantee series victory. But goddamn this team with Kyrie and Gordon.

I mean those who hate him really don't get it at all. This is a character. This is a self-conscious wink-wink performance art of pure unadulterated excess with faux righteous indignation. It is hella fun. It generates money and viewership. And it makes the community alive.
Damn I love him.
Nick Wright beta chin guy on the other hand is just plain cringelord unlettered unsophisticated pomp.

Well, I found a replay and damn it was a bad game for the Cavs. One thing I really noticed, and maybe just because of the recent Windy article about how "genius" Lebron is at resting on the court, but hot damn he was not engaged this game. His engagement on defense was atrocious, he rarely got back on fast breaks, and he just kinda stood around looking grumpy a lot on offense.
Now, I don't remember this as much from the Toronto series, but I wasn't LOOKING because I hadn't read the article. But if he played anything like that, Masai was right to fire Casey. If he was playing like this against the Raps, they should have just put him into every offensive possession.

Nah, Nick Wright is cool. And he seems like a good dude too. I enjoy his commentary on most issues, even if he's uber pro Lebron
