they are fun to watch.. doesn't mean they are "better". Raptors defense is not as good as last year. their offense is about the same. this comment takes into account that scoring is up across the NBA.
retrospectively, the Raptors in 2016-2017 are worse because they have less wins. they used a lot younger players throughout the year much more often than last year. It seemed Casey//Management is sacrificing "win now" for the long term upside of their young, still-developing players.
guys with almost no NBA experience got lots of playing time this year. Last year the Raptors handed out ~ 1000 minutes to guys with almost no NBA experience. This year that # went up to ~3200 minutes and climbing. And, i'm not talking about some #1 overall pick getting time. I'm talking long term project guys. Nogeira, Wright, VanVleet, Siakam, Poetl. all guys finding their way. it was just Powell last year.
prospectively, the Raptors long term future looks solid. Short term prospects: a lot depends on whether or not Lowry and Carroll can come back and when they do come back how close to 100% they will be.
in the unlikely possibility that Lowry and Carroll can come back at 90%+ of their normal competency the Raptors will do better in the playoffs this year than last year. The only time i've seen Lowry healthy at the end of the year was the year they played Brooklyn. Every other year he is battling something that is hampering him noticeably. Carroll? who knows man.. i don't own a crystal ball.
Chances are, Lowry will be much less than 100% when he comes back and they'll win less than 10 playoff games this year. i don't think this team can withstand Lowry shooting like total garbage in the playoffs the way last year's team did because their defense is not as good.
less regular season wins.. less playoff wins.... = worse team than 2015-2016.

Joseph's defense is terrible this year. Solid last year. JV and Powell are not playing as well last year as they did this year. You don't watch them so you would not know who is doing what.
Getting back to the Eastern Conference in general. The top 4 teams are going to want to avoid Miami if Waiters comes back. Miami is very tough to beat with him playing. I think Miami has the best shot of upsetting a top 4 team.

that's why teams trying to "win now" try to get as high a seed as possible in the regular season by winning more games. unless they don't have the "win now" mentality and they play a bunch of 21 year olds with little NBA experience for 3200+ minutes in order to help their long term development and sacrifice this year. the 2015-2016 team was in "win now" mode.

going in circles?  the Raptors didn't rest any one until they secured the 2nd seed.
if you are not basing a team's quality on wins and losses in the regular season and playoffs there is not much more to discuss. especially if ur claim is the team in question is in "win now" mode. i think the Lakers are the best team in the NBA they just don't feel like playing in June. That's when they all want to go golfing. Wins don't matter.
onto some other news. Joel Embiid had cartilage removed and no repairing and sewing of cartilage so his recovery should be fast. No repair/heal phase. full weight bearing in 2 weeks.

no, i am comparing the 2016 Raptors to the 2017 Raptors. 2 teams that do not rest their players. my comment is the Raptors are worse based on their performance and my evidence is their win totals in the regular season and playoffs. You stated regular season and playoff wins are invalid in comparing the 2 teams.

Well GS are closing out really hard on the 3 pt line to try and shut that down (which worked), so it's not that surprising they gave up a lot more shooting fouls on drives, especially on guys like Lou and Harden.

It depends. IMO he's one of the 100% useful players, in other words, on no team would he be redundant. However, I don't see the Pacers getting a great haul for him because of the rumors surrounding him moving on.

He's pretty close to checking out. I don't see much improvement the pacers can make to that roster either. McMillan was a terrible choice as coach too.

just to add to this:
many major defense metrics places Paul as substantially better than Harden. Defensive Real Plus/Minus, Defensive Points Saved,Field-Goal Percentage Differential,On/Off Differential all have Harden as a bad defender and Paul as a good and sometimes elite defender.
i think the author loses information by factoring out of pace of play by going on "per 100 possesions" for offense. high pace of play can be an offensive weapon. Don't know how to fix that problem though. So I think his conclusions about Harden/Paul on offense are based on incomplete info.
