Watched the Nellie clip. Pretty ridiculous by the refs to have injured players come out and play.

Yeah, you can say it's not the best to field "8" players and only 5 capable of playing, but hey it's the NBA. Gotta do what you gotta do.

After everything that has gone down with the Knicks recently I actually think Melo has become somewhat underrated across the league. He's still a top tier second option type guy. He's too black-holey to ever take a team all the way but if he somehow landed in the right spot I think he'd be awesome.

I know this isn't a great comparison but whenever I see him play the beta-dog type role in team USA games he looks so lethal. But he's a guy that definitely has an over inflated sense of his ability. I'm not sure there are too many guys he'd play with where he respected them as the no.1 guy. I think it'd be pretty interesting to see him play with CP3.

EPV sounds incredible, but how useful will it be really? I feel like us armchair statisticians will just grab the "total points added" and use it like ORTG, past that EPV goes incredibly in depth with fluctuating values every single moment of every single play. That's a bit unwieldy to say the least.

An issue that I'm having with it is how current coaches are so opposed to the current analytics when we're already moving past that and into something as complicated as EPV. I could see it as a good coaching tool to show where to make the pass etc. but I don't even think we're to the level of acceptance we'd need to be. Perhaps with a new wave of analytical coaches (thinking Stevens and perhaps some assistants), they could sit down with players and "watch tape" with the EPV system to explain their flaws.

I actually don't think EPV adds much to the stats debate, but that could be because it already seems so obvious to me. A big problem with analytic approaches is translating them into actual game strategies. Sometimes teams don't have the players able to do the "best" thing at any given time. Players get tired and can't 100% do things over and over, some strategies are absurdly dumb even if they are +EV on paper because they are high variance and easily exploited.

All in all the best coaches really need a strategic and tactical mind to beat inferior teams. Stats obviously aid in quickly highlighting where you need to look, and some stats are extremely important no matter what you do. But we are getting to the point with so many stats that actually don't tell us anything I can understand why coaches get upset. The stats revolution of the NBA has a lot of noise attached to it.

This is a big thing because it can tell you so many things that have not been translated into numbers before. But there is noise but mostly comes from people who can't properly analyze it. Stats are most useful for GM's, not coaches. The author's thoughts on statistics and analysis in the article are probably some of the more important things to get out of it for majority of people in a way.

It is also a lot of noise because it is a buzzword that has picked up lately and articles are popping up all over the place about it, but the majority of things that will come from it are yet to be seen, so it is more than noise. I can see some cool things coming out in the future. Will predict the future (how some ppl perceive it)? No, that's not the point of it either.

I come from a statistics background though(operational), and have been thinking basketball shit all my life so I am of a somewhat unique perspective on how things could be headed (nothing like this author though). Nothing that might not have been though about before, just stuff that has not been possible because of the data needed (like the author mentions). That's the main revolution. What is to come of it is what nobody really knows completely yet tbh.

And I meant Stevie Blake from the Lakers =P. Instantly makes Lakers that much more rootable after coming back.
