Update 3/16/12: This past Wednesday I was on Live On Three to talk about the book with djWHEAT, SirScoots, and Slasher. It was a really fun interview, and they all had a lot of positive remarks about the project. Check out the VOD of the interview on the book's site (I come in at roughly the 1:47:45 mark).
Update 4/16/12: I've been out of town for a week, so I'm a little late posting this, but I also recently co-hosted StarCast to talk about the week in SC2 as well as to discuss the book. The guys at SCast had some very nice things to say about TYISC2, and even called it an "untrollable" work--a pretty big compliment for anything produced in the gaming community, for sure. You can listen to the episode here, and if you don't already, you should subscribe to the show on iTunes.
About the Book
As some of you may know, I have been working on a StarCraft II book for about eight months. Now, I'm extremely excited to announce, the book is complete, and it goes on sale today on Amazon and Amazon Kindle (Update: Now available on iBooks and NOOK as well). Additionally, if you can't afford the $12.50 for the printed book or the $5.99 for the ebook, you can download the 100% complete PDF for pay-what-you-want (even if "what you want" is $0.00). It is my goal to make this book as accessible to as many fans as possible, so if those prices don't work for you, pay whatever you're comfortable paying.
The Year in StarCraft II: 2011 is an almanac-style celebration of the story of professional StarCraft II in 2011, and it is the first of what I hope to make an annual publication. At its core, it is a recap of the elements that defined professional SC2 during the year and includes the following:
- Performance and play style discussions of 50 of 2011's most important StarCraft II players, from Bomber to IdrA to TLO to White-Ra
- Total win/loss statistics (combined as well as broken down by each major league) for every one of the 280+ players who competed in any post-qualifying DreamHack, GSL, GSTL, IEM, IPL, MLG, NASL, or TSL event throughout the year
- Discussions of the evolution of the game itself, via patches and ladder/tournament map pool changes throughout the year (remember Blistering Sands??)
- Overview of the metagame and its development throughout the year for each matchup
- Miscellaneous statistics highlighting players with the highest win rates, win counts, games played, and other metrics throughout the year
- Co-edited by Liquid`Sheth!
The Year in StarCraft II: 2011 is written for StarCraft II fans of any caliber. For those who are already well-versed in the scene, this is a telling of the way the year played out. For those who follow the scene more casually, it's a great introduction to the most important aspects of the pro circuit. Finally, while TL and Liquipedia obviously do a great job of recording tournament results and players' performance, The Year in StarCraft II: 2011 is also a quick and easy reference for players' total records per league for the year alone.
I firmly believe in the value of recording the history of professional StarCraft II as it happens, and if this first volume is successful, I promise that not only will I continue publishing subsequent editions but that they will continue to get better and better (even though it's off to a pretty awesome start to begin with!). I wrote this book because this is the kind of work that I wanted to read as a fan of this game. This is the book that I feel StarCraft II deserves.
For more information, please check out the book's website at yearinsc2.com. And again, if nothing else, check out the pay-what-you-want PDF. I honestly believe you will love The Year in StarCraft II.
If you have any questions whatsoever, just leave them below, and I'll be happy to answer. And thank you very much to those who have supported me so far. This could be the beginning of something great.
About Me
I'm KingOctavious, otherwise known as Robert C. Ring in the place people tend to call "real life." I am a writer, a StarCraft II enthusiast, a Zerg player, a life-long gamer, and a sci-fi film expert. My first book, Sci-Fi Movie Freak was published by Krause Publications last year. Within the SC2 community, I am a web content developer for Evil Geniuses, I contribute segments regularly to the StarCast podcast, and I have also contributed to the Good Game esports documentary as an interview transcriber. Naturally, I tend to write on the topics about which I am most passionate. StarCraft II is one of those topics. Over the past eight months, I have poured everything into this book, and I could hardly be happier with the outcome. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
But enough about me. Check out The Year in StarCraft II now!

thanks, I'll check it out right away and buy it, if I like what I see. ;-)

I love having a physical copy of a book so I think I'll buy it off amazon. Thank you very much for doing this and I'll be sure to write a review when I can. Good luck in the future and I look forward to the next installment already

Thank you so much. Amazon reviews are extremely helpful to the success of the book.
And I got started on the 2012 volume Friday. I'm just as excited as you are!
EDIT: I'll also just add that I do think that for this book in particular, the physical book is the best version to have. Much easier to flip through, etc., and, honestly, it just looks really good.
|
That's a bit presumptuous of a subtitle.
|
thanks for this! I also say a history of starcraft book but it was for brood war and wasn't free...
your book is great, going to check it right away! <3
|
going to buy the physical book, just have to wait for it reaching France ^^ looks really nice, congratulations
|
Truly a beautiful gift both to the Community and to spread the word of Starcraft. Going to have a fine read at this. Will buy physical copy if I really enjoy :>

Yeah, I could have waited to make it free, but I wanted to do so right off the bat. I'm more interested in reaching as many people as possible than turning a quick profit off the book, and additionally, when you make a move like that (waiting and then going free), that shuns your most loyal customers who bought from you right off the bat. I didn't want to punish people for being more interested in the book than others.
EDIT: I'm also not sure you understand my pricing correctly. You mentioned something about PPV in your first post. This is in no way a PPV book. You can buy the ebook or print version, or just download the PDF for whatever price you want.

I was wishing someone would post a review so I could see if it was worth it then I realized it was available for free as a PDF so I could look it over before I buy it. All the stats towards the end sold me, thats what I was hoping for. I am going to grab the paperback book so I can leave it out when people come to visit.
I will wait to get the book to actually read it, so no review from me yet. Here is the chapter list though, if anyone is interested as I was, on the proportions of each content type. + Show Spoiler +INTRODUCTION ................................................................ 5 CH. 1: THE LANDSCAPE OF THE GAME ............................... 7 ---PATCHES ............................................................................ 7 ---LADDER MAPS .................................................................. 16 ---TOURNAMENT MAPS .......................................................... 22 CH. 2: STRATEGIES AND METAGAME .............................. 28 ---PROTOSS.......................................................................... 28 ---TERRAN ........................................................................... 38 ---ZERG ............................................................................... 44 CH. 3: THE DEFINING PLAYERS ........................................ 51 CH. 4: THE MAJOR LEAGUES ......................................... 123 APPENDIX A: PLAYER RECORDS .................................... 136 APPENDIX B: STATISTICS ............................................... 279 INDEX ........................................................................... 289
Thanks for your effort on this.

Thanks a bunch, Rastaban. A review on here (and Amazon) would be greatly appreciated so other people can get a feel for it. Also, ftr, I think that for a book like this, paperback is the better way to read it. But you all obviously go for whatever format you prefer.

Got it from Amazon, may take 18 days to get to the UK but I am sure it will be worth it. Great to see this kind of thing and I look forward to receiving it

This is awesome.
I wish something like this was made for BW, can you imagine the history retained? Builds and strategies were SO different back then, I would love to have something like this for every year since Starcraft started being played professionally haha.
Good luck with sales, looks pretty good! :D

Haha, yeah. That's actually part of what I was thinking when making this. Along with it being a good read now (IMO, of course , I really wanted us to have something that we could look back on years from now and say, "Lol what were we thinking?" etc.

This is such an awesome project u did. I hope us community could help and contribute for your next project.

Thank you! Buying it on kindle and will donate a little something also

Definitely gonna take a look, and I'm very fond of the model you chose for pricing on this first volume.

Has anyone loaded the PDF into a Kindle to see how it looks? If it works well I'll donate $6 through Paypal since you'll get more of that than the $5.99 eBook.

This is a great idea!
Personnally I followed the sc2 scene since the beginning almost, but for all those who saw their interest for starcraft 2 growing late, there was no way for them to catch back on history and get access to the same global memories that all the community shares... And of course it'll also be a great esport guide that people will be able to show to their friends family etc to try to get them involved.
Thanks for the initiative!

Is the book written in such a way that someone who doesn't know anything about Starcraft 2 could understand it? Or is it written for fans?

This is written purely for fans, and the language is geared toward fans. I do think that someone who's not familiar with SC2 can appreciate reading about the top players' performances throughout the year, but 80% of it they probably just won't understand.

great job on this. heres a 5..

I think eSports Almanac 2011: SC2 is the best way to describe it in as few words as possible. Very cool resource and if you do one every year would be an awesome way to always remember and keep track of the way this game evolves.
Imagine if BW had one of these noting specifically amazing games and showing the rise of savior in one book the fall in the next :O

I'll wait for reviews on here, if people like it and enjoy it then i'll be buying a physical copy. So please people give impressions!!

I personally think it was a good idea to release it as a free pdf. This because now I had the chance to get to know the book and it's content which would have been impossible without the pdf. I like reading real books so I was just taking a look at the pdf and thinking about buying it. Excellent work I gotta say and the whole community should be really proud of you for making such an effort and creating a book like this. High five!

Why don't you download it for free and check it out yourself?
That's what I will do. If like it, I will order the paperback. I love the idea of browsing though it in ten years and all the memories come up again
edit: I just realized the OP made me post my first reply on TL - I was a silent reader for years :D

You should've made it a minimum of 0.01, you would've ended up with more actual purchases (as in, more than 0.01).
I'll definitely give this a read.
EDIT: The Humble Indie Bundle does this and if not for it, I probably would've just gotten the games for free instead of paying the $5 or whatever I ended up paying for it.

I don't have any money right now, but I want to read it, but I would feel bad D:

Actually if you're going to pay something pay at least $1, not $0.01. There was an indie video game that used a PWYW model and they lost a lot of money cause a load a short-sighted people only payed one cent, and the cost of each transaction was more than one cent (I can't remember the game but it's been cited on TotalBiscuit's channel numerous times whenever he talks about the PWYW model).
I don't know if this guy has the same set-up but the sentiment should still be the same, don't be a douche and just pay one cent, if you do choose to pay throw in at least a dollar or two.
|
Thanks! Looking forward to buy it man! Keep it up seems like a great job there!

When can I buy a printed edition, with faults corrected?
|
On March 14 2012 01:11 Jiddra wrote: When can I buy a printed edition, with faults corrected?
Yeah, the folks on Reddit have discovered 5 typos, 3 of which are very minor, 2 of which are moderate (Machine's combined win/loss record is not accurate, and one of the digits for Polt got messed up). It may be a couple months before I can implement those changes. Like I said, these are generally pretty small things in the course of a 300-page book with over 280 players, but they of course do need to be addressed (and, like every writer, I die a little on the inside when something like this is discovered post-release TT). I just can't do that right away.
|
I browsed across the stats and read the Stephano page. It looks fairly interesting. I'll buy a physical volume next month if the price tag is below 10€ inc. shipping (car repairs this month...), but I'll send a few paypal dollars your way if I have to stick with the pdf.

Thanks! Amazon's international sites should have the book up within a month or two. I know that's a bummer, but hopefully you can find it there eventually.

This book is one amazing summary on to what happened during the course of last year. I fully enjoyed to warp myself with war memories of distant excitement. I relived those precious moments in the beginning. I remembered everything that was and compared to where we are now.
Thank you for your hard work and outstanding analyses.

This sounds really interesting. Good job making it accessible to everyone! I stopped playing for a while after release and I felt like I missed a lot. This should definately help me out .. Thank you for all the time you put into this!

I'm a little disappointed by the lack of pictures, though. Player portraits, action shots, anything? I guess that shit's expensive.

Yeah, there are a lot of issues involved in putting pictures in it, cost being just one of them. However, that's something I'm looking into for the 2012 edition, if I'm able to make one.
|
As i'm broke as hell right now, I'll gladly go for the PDF pay-what-you-will option, good stuff I'll be sure to get a hard-copy whenever i can afford it though, it'll settle itself nicely onto my shelf next to sirlins playing to win and the starcraft bible!
|
You've probably heard this like 100x already, but in case not, there's a typo on the back. I don't have it in front of me, but it's something like "it's is..." which is obviously redundant.
I bought the book and love it. Thanks!

Of course, we've still got a long way to go before I can determine that a 2012 version of the book will be viable. If you've read the pay-what-you-want PDF and haven't chipped in something yet, every little bit helps to ensure that we can have one of these for each year of the life of professional StarCraft II. Let's keep this thing rolling! I truly hope that StarCraft II can have its history recorded as it occurs, and I know most of you do, too.
Also, if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check out my interview on Live On Three. I come in at about the 1:40:00 mark. This was a really fun interview, and djWHEAT, SirScoots, and Slasher had a lot of awesome stuff to say about the book!

Hello,
My copy of the book just dropped from the mailbox Sure it took almost a month for me the get, but the wait was totally worth it. Been skimming through the book for the last 15 minutes and I have to go to work now. At least I have something to look forward to when I get home or I can enjoy the bus ride with a fantastic book.
I wish you will be able to write a book like this yearly. Muchos gracias
