If I had any of the skills required for an actual job I'd apply right away. I hope people who are passionate about E-Sports and SC2 get those positions and bring some good content to everyone.
I don't currently live in the states but own a green card... - don't think they'd want to pay the flight cost though, even though I'm a perfect candidate of some of the harder to fill roles

Please go ahead and purchase your spectator tickets right away, if you hired we will totally reimburse you for the price of your spectator package and we will work with the hotel to fix any reservations that are affected.
I will NOT be using the college excuse. This seems like an awesome opportunity. Are we allowed to apply for many jobs? My subject line literally has like every position minus 5.
Also, some of the positions are repeated for different days. For example:
Seating Planner/Announcer - 2 total (1 per shift) - Main Stage Seating Planner/Announcer - 4 total (2 per shift) - Qualifier
If we are indifferent (and want to apply to both), should we make that clear in the subject line, or should we just note it in the application?

Heck yes, sir. Surely it must be worth missing two days of classes for this opportunity.

What a great opportunity! This just happens to be exactly within my fall break from university. Best of luck to everyone who applies, hope to see you there.
wow this is amazing. I love how you guys are reaching out to the community like this. I'm from Canada and i just applied. Hopefully i get hired because i know I can do an amazing job :D ♥ Also, i can speak/translate french. I know there are quite a few french pro gamers
On September 01 2011 12:59 Shilliwippen wrote: I'm just curius, when you're saying resident in america, that means you only have live there right?
If so, why is it limited to only north american ppl? If an outsider, for example european would pay his own flight ticket over to the states? :>
I'd imagine it would get complicated handling many peoples visas etc. I don't have any knowledge of how it works, but hiring people without the proper documents can land people in jail afaik.
Anyways, I applied, I really hope i get the chance to help you guys out :D
I would love to do this so bad, I tried for MLG, but unfortunately wasn't accepted. The only thing conflicting this is my school schedule and the uncertainty of me being able to attend due to classes.
I know it says we can continue to stay until Sunday if we receive jobs in the qualifier portion, but is our hotel covered until Sunday as well, or is it only covered until the 7th?
Applied! So great you guys are doing this. I love when people reach out to the community like this. +1 IPL, and good luck to all who applied. This is gonna be awesome!
Edit: When could we expect to hear something back, either way? I'd have to take some vacation time from work and I like to schedule those kinda things as far in advance as I can, thanks!
I too am concerned about the age nonsense, but it seems that since players are able to get exceptions for being under 21, possibly staff would be too? I would think the age would be too big of a thing to be overlooked for this post, plus IPL wouldn't want to rule out anyone who happened to be really amazingly qualified if they were 20 or something.
A flight from Vancouver to Atlantic city is pretty expensive. I doubt they would fly someone a little more qualified then someone closer that has less qualifications. At least I live in a beautiful city :D
Sent in my app. Good luck to everyone else! This is pretty awesome of the IPL guys, opening up a little more, and getting a bunch of nerds the chance to work such a large event.
I would apply if I thought I could do it. As it turns out, freelancing always finds a way to shit all over what you actually want to do (got a job until mid-late October)
Sent in an application. Would be absolutely awesome if I got selected for the position as I think it would be great fun and the experience would be very valuable.
Just applied! I have done camera work for sports events, and been a live director at a university sports stadium! OMG I would flip my shit if this works out... IGN deserves some mad props for coming to the community for jobs, and not just outsourcing to a production team that doesn't care about Starcraft.
I'm like a five year old on Christmas eve right now!
Its really sad that u have to be from US or Canada. These jobs look like WoW raid leaders playground. THE BEST JOBS EVER. Uploading and saving replays is my specialization. 8 USD / h ? I would do such a job for free. GL to everyone.
BTW its a really nice idea to ask on TL.net. thumbs up
Hopefully I hear back from IGN eSports soon, I have a pretty decent background in Live Event work, and I'd love to slide this in between MLG Raleigh and MLG Orlando.
This seems more like a lottery/giveaway contest than an application process to be honest. I mean, staff badge, not working 24/7, get to watch the event when you're not busy, get to see some real ballers, etc. Not to mention flight/food being compensated for. Pretty sick way to run events, hopefully it will prove successful and be done by others.
well this sucks. I'm on holidays right now and i can't send my application because i don't have my resume on my laptop. Boo
when is the cut off date for applying? Also, i'm not 100% sure i would even get hired because my airfare to newark is like 1500 return... that's a bit much isn't it?

Not I no. But whether I get it or not, I suspect they may have quite a volume of applications to sift through... and there is probably a longer wait period before actually filling all spots than time has transpired thus far.

Best hotel option is the special rate we have with Bally's Park Place. It's probably the most inexpensive rate you'll find, short of staying at a seedy motel or inn that's not on the boardwalk.

We are looking for talented individuals for our full/part time positions. Send in your resume if you feel you meet qualifications and have the passion to work in this industry. We will definitely look at an application from someone who lives internationally for these full/part time positions.
We are ideally looking for on-site. Many of our current staff moved to California to work for us, however, working remote isn't out of our scope. As I said, we are looking for talented individuals to help grow eSports.
I forgot to ask: OP says Oct 10 but IPL schedule says Oct 9. Will there be work to be done on any of the first set of jobs (the only ones I applied for) after checkout time on the 9th? (Can't find any particular schedule atm so vOv)

Checkout time isn't the 9th. Games run until the evening of the 9th. Checkout is Monday morning (Oct 10th). We wouldn't ask our staff to work and not get a good night's rest before heading home. Plus, most of the parties happen the evening after the tournament ends...you'll need that extra night because you will be exhausted after working + partying + drinking.
Man.. I replied, but now I'm feeling like maybe I didn't represent almost any of my personality, and instead only focused on my job experience. I hope it doesn't affect their view of me. GL everyone else! HF

Yeah I wasn't sure so I figured I'd double check. And I got sick in Raleigh so I have lots to make up for
Would it be possible to get a car rental and gas coverage instead of a flight though? I'm in Ottawa, and it'd only be a ~9 hr drive, and cost about the same.
I'm working in all business related classes this semester, so I'm just straight up telling them that I'm missing class if I somehow managed to get a spot in this. Best part is they probably would approve if I applied their class to it somehow

;_; Shouldn't get my hopes up, quite sure that the competition is fierce.
wow this is very interesting, i have some extra vacation days to burn for the year, and i love playing sc2 and craps :D

I applied, it's so amazing what this company is doing for the community. It's actually jaw dropping, I hope anyone who gets one of these jobs does their best because this place deserves it.

In the words of a very famous interviewer: Excellent.
Getting your applications in within the next 24 hours would be a solid idea. I've gone through the first 400 applications and have a good idea where most of the slots will go but it's not locked in yet, but we want to book travel soon!
Since some people were asking us, working for IPL 3 does not preclude you from working for other organizations as well.

bah alright. im gonna do my best..been quite busy as of late preparing for the upcoming school year >.<
Glad to see IGN reaching out for more community support. The best people to get things running are people that not only have experience with other events in the appropriate fields, but also people who have the necessary passion. Got to applaud the people who came up with this idea since it's probably one of the best ways from a Human Resources perspective to ensure that this event runs well Here's to hoping for one heck of an awesome event!
I am the man for the job ask anyone!!!! Good luck to all And who wouldn't want a magical balloon guy at their event?
Edit: I would be someone who would be able to do many more events. I also know when to do magic and balloons and when not to just as a fyi.( Im not a slacker)
I so hope to get to do this, having my wife's permission and support feels like Ive already got it hahaha,.
I am absolutely applying. I know this account has barely any posts, I made a new one to mirror my new Battlenet name change.
But anyway I just applied, I feel like I have a pritty good chance... well at least of my application getting looked at twice. My work as a Host in a restaurant and as a manager of an Xbox Live arcade, cupped with my convenient location being 2 hours from Atlantic City, is hopefully what IGN is looking for. Being out of work is the worst, but having this job would definitely look good on a resume that needs buffing d:

I applied as well, hopefully not too late. Haven't been 24 hours yet, but I wished I applied a lot sooner.
I forgot to mention in my email. Since I'm only 2 hours away no hotel or transportation would be needed. If anything I would stay on my aunt's comp'd rooms. She has plenty >_>

GAH!!!! i'm not getting home till tuesday morning Boo, GL to all though. Guess no application for me then
I applied even though I have school. Hopefully I don't have to be in before Wednesday afternoon, since I have a test. I am totally willing to miss 2 days of school though.
Edit: Oh man, just looked through the thread and saw that HD wanted people to turn in their applications 12 hours ago T_T Wish I saw this thread earlier, but was so busy. Looks like my chances are slimmer. Oh well, hopefully they have another event next time.

Oo, looks like today is the grand revealing. If anything, I just think it's fantastic that IGN is giving people the opportunity to do something that is this damn cool. I saw the thread all delirious at 3am and was thinking "Hell yeah, this is great!". So, big thanks to IGN for helping us help you ♥
Wow this is stressful waiting. I guess that shows how great an opportunity this is. Thanks again to IPL for putting the effort into giving each application a fair overview. Looking forward to hearing back!

Take it from me. I'm active duty military and we honestly don't really get paid all that much. I average like $1800 per month then I receive another $1200 for BAH (Rent) in which 900 of it goes too. So overall I'm left with $2k-2100 which then I have bills to pay such as utilities, car insurance, etc...

Not sure that is a consideration. The 2 pay options are pretty equal. You either get $8/hr OR a free flight. Everyone will get one of these two so it doesn't matter what the picked person has the income to go or not.
I see your point, though, that without being picked you, yourself, wouldn't be able to go. That does suck no matter how you shake the stick. Hopefully an IPL/MLG will come to a town near you soon.

I was so much pointing to active military with the comment, i know that military members get paid far less than they deserve. I was talking more toward the engineers and fortune 500 company people.

Wow I am surprised that so many applications came in, but than again they did offer to fly people out. Nonetheless this is still one of the coolest things IGN has done in a while.
Good luck to everyone involved, and if you made it, post here!
All emails have been sent as of a couple minutes ago. If people end up backing out we might still need more people! Thanks again for everyone's applications, we truly do appreciate all of your interest and we hope to see you at IPL 3!

I get to be a referee, which means I only have to work 2 days, ha ha! To everyone who got a spot: I look forward to meeting you! To everyone who didn't: I will be the best goddamn referee I can just in honor of you fine people!

Whoa man, chill out. Be happy you actually had an opportunity to even possibly grab a slot. They said they would be flying people out other locations to help out.
Besides, I've been on the IGN boards since '03 and apparently didn't snag a slot. Doesn't give me a reason to be jaded about it. There will be other events if you're interested, apply for them when they happen.

And how about giving the job to people who need it working, struggling, making minimum wage. Not some high tech engineers or executives ffs
That's a shitty attitude to have, man. I didn't make it either.
got an email asking if i was still interested in this..never got another email after my response.
guess that means i didn't get in :/ - though im definitely envious, congrats to everyone that got the opportunity to work for the IPL. have fun and enjoy the experience!
EDIT: nvm. guess all the emails actually didn't go out. got a backup postition which, to me, is a-okay
I'm not happy for anyone I dont know. Why would I be glad someone else got the job I wanted? That attitude is just stupid. Be honest with yourself and stop trying to be some nice guy that you think everyone wants you to be.

What does posting on TL have to do with your qualifications?

So you applied because of the money, not because of the opportunity to actually do something for ESPORTS?
Kinda makes me glad you didn't get a position tbh.
@Probasaur, well, if you want me to be just as frank as you seem to be with your unfortunate attitude, you didn't get in because you weren't qualified enough.

Situational. Can say a lot regarding their contribution or lack thereof. Lurkers are fine though I suppose. But you wouldn't be too happy if you found a person who snagged a slot signed up the day of this happening on TL and furthermore aren't very well qualified.
But IGN typically has their shit together so I'm not super worried about it.
I man I just was going through my sent mail and I sent in the wrong resume hahah One from 2 years ago and not even geared towards my E-sports stuff. That one is sitting in my folder wondering why it was made just to be stuck in a folder... MEHHHHH
Who ever said I applied for the money? That was just a thought. And do something FOR esports? How about work with together with it? I applied for the experience and the money would just be an added bonus and help me when I most need it now out of a job. If there was a local tournament no matter how small I would absolutely go and volunteer to help the local scene grow.
If anyone knows of anything happening in the Middlesex county area of NJ I'd love to help out any way I can. I was a host at a restaurant and a manager of an xbox arcade so I could probably be of some use at least in organizing.

Yes, contribution to TL may be somewhat tied with post count on TL, but that has absolutely nothing to do with what they have actually done for ESPORTS as a whole, as well as what skills they have.
Oh well, I didn't get in. I still pretty cool that they opened it up to everyone.
It should be an awesome experience and one that those chosen should really enjoy. Congrats! Still thinking about driving up. Anyone from DC want to carpool?
Alex, if you need any last minute backup let me know. I've worked on live sets for years and live pretty close. Oh, and BTW did you hire a Live Director? If not I'd love to chat about it.
I just hope this isn't the last action of this kind. I know my application was not the best one, and I was stupid enough to think not more than 100 people would apply. I am a sore loser, but when I know it was completely my fault I can't help but feel good for those who got it, and I trust no other applicant will perform better than the chosen ones.
Many of us feel we deserve a second chance. I hope other companies will follow in IGN's footsteps, and congratulations to those who got it, you have no idea how jealous i am.

Don't be too hard on yourself, I am also suprised so many people applied. I thought I had a good chance, but it turned out I didn't. I guess the best way to help out now for this event will be either going to the event in person or watch the stream online.
I totally agree with you we deserve a second chance, hope this kinds of opportunities pop outs in the future.
Congrats everyone, I didn't realize there would be that many applications or else I might have wrote a bit more instead of just attaching my professional resume ^.^
Its a tough time for students to make it there either way. Have fun I hope!
Bah, it's only a 9 hr drive for us Inkarnate. Indy for the CES invitational was 14, and we made it happen in April. 9 would be a piece of cake in comparison.

Everytime i see someone saying they got chosen my stomach sinks thinking it could be me. But I am confident other eSports organizations will pick up this habit, even IGN itself, cheap, enthusiastic, highly qualified manpower is something employers dream about. And when they come again, I will be waiting... or "we" I expect

Whew you just made my heart skip a beat as I only applied for the production positions.
Well now the new questions is that when will those positions be filled / notified.
I got a position as a referee, I honestly feel my experience as a past MLG volunteer referee helped with that. Sorry to anyone who didn't get a position and congrats to everyone who did.

Yes, any updates on when these positions will be filled?
Thank you for being up front and connected to the community! Don't listen to those that are unnecessarily critical, most of us really appreciate the fact that these positions were even offered!
Ok ok ok ok...So I checked me email this evening and saw a response from IPL and was like "Oh I guess they are sending rejection emails (hadn't been following this thread, had no idea about how many applicants etc) read and saw that I had been offered a positions (Information Staffer) and I literally flipped out. I jumped out of my truck (I am an EMT, was on a standby) and started freaking out. I think my partner thought I got stung by a bee or something, it was all pretty hilarious.
I never thought that I would get chosen seeing as my only real qualification I felt was a love of Starcraft. BUT HOLY CRAP SO EXCITED! Cannot wait to go to IPL 3!! Thanks so much IGN :-)
WOOOOOOT! Looks like I'll be joining you Mr Diamond on the Main Stage at some point since I also was offered and will be accepting the Main Stage Player Coordinator position. This is going to be absolutely terrific to work with these guys and make this the best event to date!

I received an email setting up an appointment for round 2 of interviews yesterday, however cant say if they've all been sent out or not.

Makes me sad too. But that's how life is =P The biggest shark always wins.
I didn't make it in either. Hopefully they will do the same thing for the next event and give more people a chance. Also I hope that other events with positions like these will adopt a similar approach ... it's a great way for fans like us to be able to give back to the community we love!
GL HF to those who got it - I am jealous! Have a great time.

If the love for Starcraft was all you needed to get the job then I seriously need to re-evaluate my life.
His story of being overcome with excitement coupled with the fact he spends his days doing such a tough and necessary job (EMT) made it a happy story for me.

Given the number of nerdgasms I'll be having my risk for heart attack will probably go through the roof. Probably good that they have an EMT on staff ^^

Yeah I agree. I can honestly believe I wasn't picked because of the awkward location in Canada we are from. No direct flights (or anything convenient for that matter) to Atlanta or Atlantic City. Sigh. oh well.
I'm personally shocked at all of the rage posts as well as the "I'm better than everyone else, but wasn't picked" posts. If you honestly think it matters what kind of experience they have (or your own experience for that matter) then you are just silly. They stated the requirements quite accurately in what they were looking for "intelligent" and in some cases "knowledge of SC2". Here on TL I would have to say that a pretty large majority of the community fits this description. The only other limiting factor is the age and location description. I'm shocked that there were fewer than 1000 applicants personally all (or nearly all) are probably over qualified so choosing the staff probably came down to people recognizable in the community for some positions and possibly a random drawing for the rest.
Personally I am kind of jealous of the people who were hired and hope (and assume) they will do a fantastic job so that other live events might hire staff in a similar fashion. Grats to the winners (the people who were hired).

Your post is a little confusing First you say you are shocked people were disappointed, then you say you were disappointed.
To your first point, It is called human nature, when people try for something and fail disapointment is a typical reaction this disappointment can manifest as anger, condusion, sadness, jealousy etc... This is more pronouced in motivated high achieving people of which it seems there were quite a few who applied to help out.
From your post you state jealousy is your reaction to not being picked.
The people I know who were hired are recognizable names and have been around the starcraft and competitive scene for years. Sounds like it was an incredibly tough pool of applicants. have fun everyone who got hired!
i was offered a job not on the list (Audio Engineer), in my interview i was told i get paid $1000, flight, hotel, and food. Then the next day i get told i cannot be paid because i don't have a work visa. So i called the US Embassy//Homeland Security and i inquired, I was told IGN had to apply for the work visa.
He should have never offered me the PAID position if IGN was never going to get my work visa.

They may have assumed you were an American. I made sure in my cover letter, resume and interview that I was a Canadian citizen and if they chose to give me a monetary payment they would have to aquire a work visa for me to be eligible to work in the US.
Work visas aren't cheap. You shouldn't blame IGN because you are not eligible to work in the US.
Has anyone had a follow up email from the original job offering email yet (the one saying you are offered the spot and to choose which option)? Just want to make sure I didn't miss a response.

No, in the interview he knew that i said i was canadian. and he still offered the paid job.
Okay so I really would love to go. But right now times are so tough I can't even afford to get there and for the entrance fee. So if there's ANYTHING you can think you might need extra help with I would gladly offer up my services, my valuable skills as a Host at a fine dining restaurant and a manager of an Xbox arcade, in exchange for a bus ticket and to be able to attend. Thats it. I only live 2 hours away and I'm just praying you see this and a acknowledge it. Thanks.
