How much have you followed the game since the Japanese release? I think there are legitimate complaints with the game, particularly from series veterans (e.g. map design is significantly better than Awakening, but Awakening had by far the worst map design of any game in the series, and Fates' is still worse than the SNES/GBA Emblems especially in Hoshido/IK), but it still looks to be a far better game than Awakening. I'm just curious which part of the game bugs you.
Some of the risks they took with Fates did pan out well though. For example, archers are probably more usable than they are in pretty much any other entry in the series to date, and Javelins and Hand Axes are for once not the most efficient weapons to use for like 50%+ of the game.
I think it's a big step up for them to remove weapon durability and improve archery - these are some extremely long standing problem of the game since its conception. For this, I will give them some credits.
At the end it's "just another FE game" though. I am not sure if it's worth 40-50 dollars.

The most questionable part is it being much more than that in NA due to the lack of a bundle option to reduce cost for someone interested in all 3 routes. JP has this option and EU was confirmed to be getting it, but NA apparently isn't.

With the amount of Landfall and "ramp" into Eldrazi (not necessarily green, sometimes just Blue with a couple scion spawners/ingest into CMC 4-5 processors) that I saw in limited, I didn't see much value for -1 attack, especially as it comes late. The deeper reason for anti-fan-service is that I think the game should be more about gameplay and less about the (questionably?) sexual content. I am OK if you make a game out of an existing franchise like Fate/Extra (in fact I think the game has its redeeming values). But the way FE:if did it is very questionable.

Yanger and I have spoken about this a lot but basically from what I remember from a few years back Nintendo doesn't have that large a presence here so to get most of the games I actually have to import them. Which kind of makes it a bit harder to justify picking up as Rand is doing shitty atm.

The series in general has always been super anime-influenced, going all the way back to its inception. It's not any more anime now than it was ever before.
The difference is that in the early-mid 90s, "anime influences" were things like LoGH, GitS, and Evangelion (probably contributing to why FE4 and 5 are so dark compared to the rest of the series). Whereas now, there's more moeblob anime, so that changes the meaning of what it means to be influenced by anime.
Ketara such a moe blob that he doesn't even know LoGH! Kind of a sad statement about anime you mention there Yanger. Wouldn't mind all the moe fan service if there was more solid quality other stuff. Last good sci-fi I can recall is SSY which was years ago. Don't even get real solid fantasy either like Moribito or other stuff like 12 kingdoms. Yona was prob best in recent years but that was hardly great and rather moeish at times. Although Chiwa is a goddess so who cares.

I thought I'd actually start reading books at some point. It's been 6 weeks and I'm only 25% through treasure island. Books are so 90s.
So only watched moe anime, can't read books and lives the life of a harem MC. Ketara you may just be part of the problem! Books are so good and now with e-readers being so it's just super easy to get access to stuff. Think I've read about 60 books this year. Some of them LN though which are only like 200-250 pages so rather small.
I'm on 88 of my LoGH rewatch. Needed a bit of a break after 82-85 though.
