I don't know a ton about it, but I kinda imagine it as if you were playing an MMO character within a world/universe like Eve. Death is semi-permanent in that your character dies, but some of his assets (and maybe experience?) goes to a benefactor, which you then assume control of, from what I gather.
My brother in law has been hyping it up for a couple years, and it seems like an awesome concept for a game. Fairly certain it's run on the Crysis engine?
In the futuristic world, ships are advertised and marketed like luxury cars would be today:
But it's also not even done and they've raised like $70 million through crowd funding by selling super expensive ships.
They've been releasing "modules" every so often as they finish developing things (not sure if it's alpha or beta level stuff) that backers can have access to. A while back they put out the hangar module, where you could walk around your hangar with your character and enter your ship and stuff. Then they released the flight module - I think there's like a time trial track and free flight mode (but pretty sure it's all still solo stuff). The fps module comes out in the next week or two, and soon after that is multi-crew flight for the bigger ships (stuff like cargo, transport, etc.)
So yes, there has been a huge crowd funding effort driving it, but the backers get access to stuff as it gets built. Also, Chris Roberts is a really passionate dude and wants to get this right. I saw him at a panel with a few other MMO developers, and he's putting everything he's got into this game.

I'm not saying the backser are getting swindled or anything, just the game still isn't "out" yet. And the amount of money they have raised is staggering considering how little content is actually out. The sheer scope of the game sounds ridiculous.

I don't know about you, but I found Sword Art Online to be a disappointment. It sucked because it started out so great too! And then I got to the mid way point and I was like "Nope".
