On January 06 2015 02:20 yamato77 wrote: Is AS the game I want it to be? Sapphire was my favorite of all time. Short Answer: Yes. Long Answer: It depends. The key question here is: What is it about Pokemon games that you love? And what is it about Gen III and Hoenn that you love? ORAS has definitely made a lot of improvements, even from the recent XY games, while also not quite delivering on a lot of what the fans were desperately hungry for. The ups and downs are varied to it's important to go through each of them and understand what it is you're looking for in a Pokemon game, and whether ORAS fulfils those wants. ORAS from a story-mode is for the most part faithful to the original RS games. The differences in the story-mode are all positive and greatly contribute to the experience. For example, in the RS games, Rayquaza was sort of a Legendary Pokemon that just kinda existed and you could go catch it if you wanted to. Not so in ORAS, where it actually has some importance in the story! The Admins of the two teams (Courtney and Tabitha in Team Magma, Shelly and Matt in Team Aqua) are also now characters with their own personalities rather than just slightly more powerful regular Grunts with modified sprites. Some events are also modified slightly (I will not go into them because of spoilers) but again these are all positive additions to the game. I also recommend you turn on the 3D mode for the cutscenes. The 3DS is not a very powerful machine, but somehow Nintendo is really good at making aesthetics look damn fine on their machines. The in-game mechanics are also improved. For example, surfing on certain Pokemon will give you a special sprite which is totally cool. Surfing on some Pokemon, like Sharpedo, will also increase your surfing speed. It's like the Mach Bike for surfing. That's seriously totally cool and I hope this is kept for future games. Since we're talking about bikes, you know how it was really irritating how you had to go back to Mauville to swap between them a lot when you were exploring? Well, in the post-game you can get both bikes! Aww yisssss. The PokeNav has also been completely retooled and takes up the bottom part of your screen in a really good way that's intuitive and useful. It's like the bottom screen in XY and DPP/HGSS merged into some super useful UI. Let's go over some of the functionalities. The AreaNav is an interactable map of Hoenn. Do you remember the Trainer's Eyes features from RSE where it would show you which trainers on which routes could be rematched? Well, what if you combined that with touchscreen functionality, and then added in all sorts of data like:
The DexNav is like PokeRadar but better. Like, a million times better. Much more intuitive mechanics? Check. Funny creeping animations? Check. Pokemon on the DexNav hold special items like Lucky Eggs, Metal Coats, etc. you can farm once you level up your DexNav? Check. You can find National Dex Pokemon on the Dex Nav? Check. DexNav Pokemon have Egg Moves, Hidden Abilities, and sometimes several 31 IVs? Check, check and check. This thing is amazing. Have I mentioned you can now fly to Routes? That's right baby, you can fly to Routes directly. Why this has only come now I don't know but goddamn does it feel good. No more having to fly to Fallabor and having to bike a great distance just to get to Meteor Falls. Just fly right to the doorstep! On the topic of flying, Soaring in the Skies is a great mechanic too. You basically get a Key Item that lets you summon Lati@s anywhere in the overworld once you reach a certain point in the story. And it does what it says on the tin - you get to ride on Lati@s' back and see the Pokemon overworld below you. You can also do tricks in the air like barrel rolls, loops, etc. It's so fun it's silly. In the post-game you can also fly to Mirage Islands where you can catch National Dex Pokemon. No more Mirage Island RNG from RSE! The Soaring in the Sky mechanics is also crucial for capturing Legendaries. Wait, did I not mention that earlier? Combined with XY, you can now catch every single non-event-only Legendary. Now, think about how many Legendaries were in XY. Not a lot, right? So how many Legendaries does that leave you? (Hint: A LOT.) That's right. If you never played Gen VI and V and always wanted to pick up one of those cool Legendaries, or are unable to transfer them into Gen VI you can now go catch your own. Did I mention all Legendaries have guaranteed three 31 IVs just like in XY to make your #PerfectOrBust easier? Have fun! Oh, and after you clear the Elite 4 a few times, Professor Birch gives you a free starter Pokemon from Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova. For reals. This isn't a "my uncle at Nintendo told me" thing. This is like, super reals. And let's bring up Secret Bases for a moment. Secret Bases have now been retooled with much more functionality while bringing back the capture the flag mechanic from Gen IV DPP, which lets you can unlock new decorations and upgrade your flag. There's also the Pal mechanic which Serebii explains well. The Secret Base mechanic also lets you save up bases full of Blisseys which you can use as EXP punching bags for end-game. Totally. Awesome. Oh and you know those sales in the Lilycove Dept Store which used to be super RNG and annoying? Now just every Saturday so no more worries about never getting those planks you need to use the large bases. So what's not so great then? Yango and various others in the thread have already talked about how the Gen VI EXP mechanics are really generous. Either you like them or you don't. This is a personal thing. I like them a lot. Other people don't. It's exactly the same as in XY, so make of it what you will. If you were into Contests, they've gotten ridiculously easier. You also get a Cosplay Pikachu that's basically tailor made to smash through Contests. Pokeblocks are also much easier to make, and there's no limit to how many Pokeblocks you can force feed a Pokemon with (so evolving Feebas is so much easier if you don't have anyone to trade with). This is a mixed bag. Cosplay Pikachu is super cute, and the Pokeblock mechanics are better. But you can basically win all of the Contsts (including Master Class) with literally any Pokemon now due to the changes in the mechanics. I'm kinda sad about that, personally but your opinion might vary. But then again Gamefreak gave us Lisia and Ali who are suuuuu-*hand wave*-uuuuuuuper cute! So I forgive them. Move Tutors come back! Yay! No Battle Frontier. Awww. The post-game Battle Resort comes so close to being perfect, but is just.. so not perfect. There's an IV Checker, Pokecenter, an infinite bike loop like in Lumiose City all in one place. There are Move Tutors (Hyper Voice Eevee gettto~). A lady gives out free EV reducing berries every day. The music themes and remixes are great. But... there's a copy-paste of the Battle Maison from XY in the middle of the island. I mean, the Maison was kind of cool I guess. But I wanted the Battle Frontier. There's no Battle Frontier. There are so many references to the Battle Frontier! NPCs talk about Scott (the Battle Frontier owner), the Frontier Brains, and the Frontier itself! But there's no Battle Frontier. There are Battle Frontier theme remixes! But it's not the Battle Frontier. Can you tell I really wanted a Battle Frontier? (I really wanted a Battle Frontier.) Some additional downsides worth mentioning (I'll just list them since they don't need huge walls of text or are kind of minor):
Not going to lie, these sorts of things won't matter to you if you never cared about things like the Battle Frontier or the like. A lot of it is basically personal opinion. But for me things like the Battle Frontier really mattered. And this is kind of what I mean about the question: "What are you looking for in a Pokemon game?" If you looking for an engaging story-mode experience, that has great overall mechanics, loads of Pokemon to catch including virtually all the old Legendaries, and want an amazing experience, you will find it in ORAS. If you're looking for the Battle Frontier, you won't find it. Also, ORAS has too much water. ![]() This never gets old.

Basically instead of XP for a defeated Pokemon being split among all participants, all of them just get the full XP value, which just balloons the XP your party receives when you're training up a newly caught Pokemon. Gen VI XP changes are great though for power levelling! That's great if you want 6+ levelled Pokemon for clearing story-mode, and when you want to raise Pokemon for battling or evolving them for completing the Pokedex you life becomes so much easier. I am very much in favour of the new changes. That being said, story-mode needs to bring back the BW2 Easy/Challenge Mode. That was cool, and helped up add some difficulty. Share XP formula to give full XP when you'd always have Exp. Share on if you're trying to do any of those things.

It depends on what your normal MMR is to begin with, but 1-4 is probably not a great start; although 2k is really low, I hope you're not that low =p. My solo is really low, maybe 2-2.5k, my party is like 3-3.5k Goal currently is to win 3-4 games, which I can probably do, unless games go full duvai again. Also, holy fuck Moonbear...
