Sheep might be in an appendix of the PHB?

Or maybe the DMG?

I'm currently playing through Assassin's Creed 2: Brotherhood and it's making me consider getting a new PC because I'm not able to run it at 96 fps/1440p consistently and I have a mITX case/mobo so I can't just add a 2nd GPU :<

I've been on PC for a while, I just still have a PS4 because there are some things I prefer to play on console, or are poorly optimized on PC.

I never stopped using tap jump in older versions of Smash and now I'm too used to it :\ Like, I turned it off and rebound some of the other buttons, only to constantly fail in the air because I was trying to tap up.

I also keep rebinding buttons to what I think is a normal action game keybinding (Jump on B, attack on A, special on X), but then can't remember how I bound it and mess up. I can't brain good.

I'm still used to tap jump from Melee, and it does mess me up sometimes with Peach, but not that much. But with the 3ds stick the way it is, I don't think I could play with tap jump on.

Yeah, I feel ya there, I struggled the same way. It's some brain confusion between knowing how it feels to play smash on a controller vs 3ds button config muscle memory.

It's not the button mapping that he's trying to mirror, but the button placement. The 3ds buttons are a 90 degree counterclockwise rotations from what the GC buttons are, so B is where X was.

Or, more accurately, they match the SNES button placement.

And pretty much every sane SNES platformer put jump on B after they realized how awkward jump on A would be with that button placement.

All work motivation is currently sapped, so let’s do a write up!

Thus far, I don’t think I’ve actually clued you guys into what the party consists of.
+ Show Spoiler [The Party] +

Li-amne-sun – Li is your classic half-orc Barbarian. He’s big, strong, quick to anger, and often annoys his traveling companions by often having an “act first, think rarely” way of doing things. He sports no armor, taking advantage of his barbarian toughness to protect him; and he wields a beautiful battleaxe that he won from an ice wolf-riding gnoll. Li has +5 STR mod – when he starts raging, he rages. I need to kill Li.

Strife – Wielding an ornate longbow that he obtained in the same fight the Li got his battleaxe, Strife spends as much of his time as possible in the trees – scouting or raining death upon his foes. He tends to go on some crazy streaks of beautifully accurate shots, and then not landing a single arrow for an entire adventure. He recently had his leg injured when the party had a run in with some wolves, slowing down the party’s travel somewhat and limiting his ability to get where he needs to.

Merric (aka The Grey Fox) – Merric is the schemer of the group. A thief and the ex-leader of the since disbanded Vulpine Syndicate, he is using the party as a means to an end. He has periodically sent communications to his second hand man in Strangnas – Griff – and is instructing him to gather as many past members of the VS as he can. What Merric intends to do once he reaches Strangnas, I have no idea, but I have a feeling it will cause some contention within the group.

Agoroth the Five-Fingered – A generally quiet member of the group, Agoroth has proven to be an incredibly useful, albeit occasionally idiotic, member of the party. His clerical heals have saved his companions on many occasions, and he can take quite a beating himself. He hasn’t done anything too noteworthy himself (aside from almost blowing up the party by stomping on a flaming bag of bombs), but he has taken the critical support role that this party desperately needs.

Harris – Short. Chunky. Asian. Paladin. Harris’s swagger is challenged by none; he walks around like he owns every single place he’s ever been. His first thought in a confrontation is to charge in with his shield held high, always ready to quickly jab his diamond-tipped trident (given to him by sirens along with 1000g) into any foe that crosses him. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and will always back them up, even if it probably isn’t for the best. Note – Harris is the weakest player of the group. He is learning, but it’s slow, and he often forgoes using most spells to instead stab the shit out of whatever is in front of him

+ Show Spoiler [The Map] +

This adventure begins just after the party destroyed the Mohr Bridge to protect Mohr from the Southern army pushing through and taking it over fairly unimpeded. They take some time to consider their next move – should they retreat back to Startford and aid the Northern army in defending their territory, or should they venture south to continue their main quest? They opt for the latter and begin their journey into the mountains to Widow’s Peak.

Map Note – Widow’s Peak sits right in middle of where the Harmony River, coming out of the mountains to the east, splits into the Northern and Southern Nemesis Rivers, which run down the terrain northwards and westwards respectively. This makes Widow’s Peak a very convenient export area. There is one glaring flaw that I haven’t figured out how to resolve but the players fortunately haven’t noticed yet – if the trade ships come down the river exporting all these goods, and the rivers run down the mountain/hills, how do those merchant ships get back the top??

The players start their travels following the river south but keeping their distance, and it’s much slower going than it was before. They lost all of their horses in the explosion that destroyed the Mohr bridge, and with Strife’s injured leg, it’s not a quick journey. However, they don’t encounter much on their way down – most of the dangerous focal points of the war are close to AnnaValla/Startford. The river carries several merchant ships periodically coming down with all manner of trade goods. After a few days, they see a couple of small buildings sitting on each bank where the river exits the forest.

After some observation, they see some guards stationed at the posts stopping ships as they come through and decide that it is some sort of toll station. They slowly approach, and they’re soon confronted by a Southern guard. The party decides to try and sweet talk him, saying they’re sent from AnnaValla to retrieve reinforcements for the war. After a bit of consideration (and some really shitty rolls on my part), the guard believes their story and lets them continue on unhindered. I decided to be fairly lenient here and reward the players for deviating from their usual “steamroll anything in our way” plan.

They continue into the forest, and night falls shortly thereafter, so they must rest. The next day, they notice some weirdness going on – Harris’s huge money pouch ends up in Strife’s bag, Strife’s arrows are in Li’s bag, etc. They shrug it off and trek onwards, stopping only once night falls again. That night, while Agoroth is on watch, he notices a faint, glowing red light through the thick of the trees. He wakes up Li to go check it out with him, but notices that the light is approaching. They scramble to get the party up and get ready for what they assume is something dangerous.

Li helps Strife into a tree, Merric climbs another tree himself, and the other three ready themselves on the ground. Harris casts Detect Good and Evil and knows something evil is behind one of the nearby trees and starts moving that way. As he does, a Hellhound leaps out and chaos ensues. One more Hellhound comes from out of the trees nearby, and a Helmed Horror follows shortly after. Flames and battle pour out over the party’s camp, and eventually the small hunting party falls, but not before bringing Harris, Agoroth, and Merric dangerously close to death. Li with his damage resistance in Rage form and Strife with a few timely crits clean things up.

As things settle down, and Li and Merric begin skinning the Hellhounds, they here a soft female giggle from a nearby branch. Li launches a dart in that direction, but the dart flies off into the darkness. A yellow faerie dragon introduces herself (Lyn) and explains that she has been following the group knowing that this fiendish hunting party was coming. She wanted to assess their abilities with her own eyes, because something dark is looming in the world. The war that is being fought by the people is only a symptom, not the illness. To find out what this Dark Threat is and where it is looming, she instructs the party to find the king of the southern kingdom. After some discussion, she decides to accompany the party provided they don’t do anything she would disprove of, and she will advise them occasionally. Tl;dr – party acquires Mushu.

Apart from Li raging and demolishing a passing deer with a dart, the rest of the journey to Widow’s Peak is quiet. Upon arriving, the group notes that this is a much more diverse town than what they’re used to. Most of the population they’ve encountered thus far has mostly been Human and Half-Elf, with some elves and dwarves scattered here and there. In Widow’s Peak, there are orcs, goblins, gnomes, etc – it’s considered the cultural hub of this area. They go off to run some errands – Strife looks for a healer to look at his leg, Merric finds a tanner that will make a fox-like hood out of the Hellhound hide, Harris and Li go to get some horses for the party. While Strife is out, he arranges passage with a river merchant to bring them down to Strangnas in a few days.

The party meets up in the evening and they head to a tavern. The one they find is particularly crowded, very rowdy – a definite party place. When they walk in, a few go to the bar and Li spots a table of orcs that he walks over towards. As he does, the 4 orcs at the table stand up, towering over the rest of the crowd, and as they’re departing the largest and clear leader of them all intentionally walks into/through Li. A few insults get thrown Li’s way for traveling with non-orcs, Li lashes out, and a brawl starts between the two of them.

A few rounds of punches and grappling occur, Harris steps in and “Command: Flee”s the chief orc. This causes things to get bad in two ways. 1) The chief fails his save and books it out of the inn – however, it’s incredibly crowded and many innocent bystanders get trampled/thrown in the process. 2) Seeing Harris interrupt the scuffle, the other orcs get mad and jump in as well. A couple of them tackle Harris, while the other tries to take on Li. Li rips one off of Harris, Harris starts brawling with the other one, and Li is overpowering two orcs that are trying to tackle/hang on/grapple him. The fight causes quite a bit of destruction in the bar, both in human and material casualties. Harris takes out his shield and bashes the orc he’s fighting, casting Wrathful Smite upon impact (he’s violated literally every rule in the Bar Brawl Ettiquite handbook at this point), causing that orc to run in fear as well.

Once the fight has escalated to this point, 10 guards and a knight come into the bar to detain the fighters. All members involved resist for a second, but then submit once they realize what is going on. The five of them (Li, Harris, 3 orcs) are hauled off to jail, have their personal affects taken, and are tossed into cells.

This session was hilariously fun, and I never intended or expected them to end up in jail, or even really spend much time at all in Widow’s Peak.

Jump on B attack on A?
IIn what bizzaro world is that a normal keyboarding for a game?

And yeah I never turned off tap up for melee/brawl.

It's not the button mapping that he's trying to mirror, but the button placement. The 3ds buttons are a 90 degree counterclockwise rotations from what the GC buttons are, so B is where X was.

Yeah totes. Jump on the bottom button always feels the best for me, when a game has it on something else it takes me a long time to get acclimated.

Or, more accurately, they match the SNES button placement.

And pretty much every sane SNES platformer put jump on B after they realized how awkward jump on A would be with that button placement.

Fuck your newfangled game systems. In my day we has NES and we were content with our button configurations the way they were consarnit
