The party was tasked with escorting a large shipment of explosives (along with the engineer that created them) to a city near the front lines of the war which will soon be under siege. Around sunset the day after they leave, they get ambushed by a small group of southern forces coming over a large hill overlooking the road. This group consisted of 3 archers (one with fire arrows), 2 mounted fighers, and a knight on his war horse. The battle ended up being really spread out, which made it really interesting. The fire archer was raining flames onto the shipment of explosives. Battle was being waged all over the hill. A couple party members tried to reach the archers at the top of the hill as the knight and the other two riders rushed down onto the rest of the party. The caravan started taking some damage, and the engineer tried to maneuver it away from the fight, but the knight charged straight for it, and his warhorse would quickly overtake it. The rogue, cleric, and paladin of the party start swinging over to try and intercept the knight. The rogue arrives first, and as he is trying to run interference, a fire arrow lands in a canvas bag (contents unknown), lighting the bag on fire. Panicking, the rogue tries to grab the bag and throw it at the knight, but it slips through his fingers and lands on the ground just behind the cart. Seeing what may soon happen, he tries to retreat. The cleric, arriving soon after the rogue, runs over and tries to stomp on the fire to put it out (these guys are idiots). Cue massive explosion - All 5 horses in the radius die outright. The engineer dies, the knight and cleric are just barely alive, the paladin is knocked out, and the rogue was 1 damage away from being instakilled. The barbarian and range manage to clean up the archers at the top of the hill just after the explosion, and somehow everyone in the party manages to survive. But this was one of those things where I was like "ok, there will be explosives and there will be fire - I have no idea where this will go", so it was a ton of fun for me as well. | ||
