Well not necessarily. If Soniv decides to have 99 sons (or daughters even) then he could name the first one "Joe Carlson I", the second one "Joe Carlson II", etc.

I suppose that's true. I think I'm one more Cathedral away from unlocking the chest but the idea of having to the The Purist challenge is also discouraging me from playing. Also I'm just a bit burnt out after playing so much before school started.

He's pretty much said some items/trinkets are just useless for the sake of being useless. Trying to figure those things out is part of the initial Roguelike experience.

2h and you're done. Play Isaac with D6, reroll shops till you get habit. Then reroll items until you get good ones (good items to increase items are guppy's tail, skeleton key etc), or you get scapular. With scapular+d6+habit you have unlimited rerolls. Reroll till you get Fate. Done.
