Okay I know that this is a heavy question for a Tuesday morning, but if any of you guys had any advice it would be much appreciated.

How many of you guys have a Master's Degree? What was the experience like? Why did you get your Master's? Why didn't you get a Masters's?

Also, how many of you are Code Monkeys? That is, how many of you do coding for a job? I know there are a few of you, but I'd like to hear from you. How'd you get the job? Anything you guys would recommend if I wanted to pursue the avenue of being a Code Monkey? Any tips that would make me more qualified?

If you guys could be brutally honest with me that'd be fantastic. And I know that there are better places to ask this question, but frankly I'm looking for all of the feedback that I can get. This is my future that we're talking about so I want all the advice I can get.

Thanks!

I've got a bachelor's in Business and in Math. I currently use neither of these degrees. I am a business analyst for the business intelligence team of a software company in the farm credit industry. Over the last year, I've become very intimate with BusinessObjects, and we're currently working on upgrading our version of BO.

I've considered getting my Master's, but it's not going to happen in the next couple of years. I don't feel like wasting any more time, energy, or money right now for a[nother] piece of paper that will be marginally useful. My current employer would reimburse my class costs, but that still leaves time and energy to be wasted.

I have no idea where I want my career to go in the future, but I know for sure that I'm much happier gathering work experience than I am sitting through classes.

Quit partway through my Master's for....reasons.
Let me say you should be damn sure you are not only extremely interested in your field to do so, but you enjoy learning for learning's sake even if it may not go anywhere. There are other things I'd offer but Master's in you guys' nerdy fields are different from mine I think.

I do web and java development fulltime. My current job is meh because the company I work for has a lot of bureaucracy and the product is uninteresting. If you do get into software development, try to find something to want to make or help improve, instead of just a generic programming job (although sometimes beggars can't be choosers).

I got the job because I went to a good school and had a good resume. If you lack that, then you have to show that you're actually capable. This means programming up stuff that you can demo.

What Req said about specializing is important (but a little less so if you're going for entry level jobs). Additionally you can specialize in "areas" instead of specific technologies. "Areas" are stuff like cloud computing, big data, web services, UI/UX, etc.

If you have time, I'd recommend you find out what type of software you want to make (games, websites, mobile apps, etc) and learn how to make that. Some jobs like game development require specific programming knowledge that's not very cross compatible with others.

As for masters, I'm considering applying to business school for a MBA. Very uncertain though.

As far as Master's programs go, I'm pretty sure MBA is the most meaningless. They're pretty much a dime a dozen in the business world, and I'm not sure how much you actually get out of the program that's applicable (unless you're specialized somehow).

Pretty sure an MBA program is just an easy way to get networking in, which is probably more valuable than the MBA itself.

yea, there's a bunch of shitty MBA programs out there. I wouldnt even consider it unless it's top tier.

Supposedly, 5e PHB is available in some LGSs already even though it's official release is next Monday. I need to try and find a store with it tonight.

Hm, I'm heading to my game store tonight, I'll take a look when I'm there. I don't have an inclination to buy it any time soon, but I might want to flip through it and see what it's all about.

Pretty much what Req said. I did an engineer's degree because I wanted to know as much as possible about the field (I decided to do it a few months before the closing of submissions because coding on calculators was fun, so deep), but I went the technical route for the first 2 years because I was too lazy for the harsh preparatory class and I preferred to get my hands on stuff asap anyway.

When it came to getting recruited, I used the APEC's website (Association Pour l'Emploi des Cadres, basically "association for executives' employment") to put my CV there, and I ended up getting contacted by companies I didn't know existed. I did it after applying by myself bore no fruits whatsoever (and only one guy was polite enough to call back and tell me it was a no, out of 7-8), and found pretty quickly. Did it again after I changed jobs.

I'm doing mostly coding, with some design depending on the project, there's also testing on this one, first time I do some. Haven't really been in contact with the client except for one so far, and she was a stupid and obnoxious self-entitled client, so...
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.

No Master's degree here. In my opinion, there are only a few things for which a Master is necessary. 1) A field for which it is required (obviously, but programming is definitely not one of them), 2) A promotion/job that you can't without extra paper, 3) A way to stay at school for a little longer (by which you're far better served by a Doctorate), or 4) A deeper dive into a subject you love (which is also better served by a Doctorate). I'm sure someone will come in here and tell me differently, but I get the sense that some people get Master's out of habit rather than need or desire. Either way, I don't have one (and the idea of doing more school is nauseating).

I've had two programming jobs since I left school, each involving Java, SQL, and some specific/proprietary technology of the company's (Pegasystems BPMS and webMethods Integration, specifically). There's always some other miscellaneous stuff in there, such as XML, JSON, and other web development stuff. I'm hoping to get a chance to do more AngularJS and Groovy soon, since web dev is preeeeetttttyyyyy.

I got my jobs just by going through a few/a bunch of interviews. At the risk of excessive self-promotion, I'm clever and well-spoken, which is rare for a programmer (I remember writing my 90-day feedback for my first job and the IT HR director looking at it and going "... wait... you're a programmer who can write?" and that was at a company with many people that I thought were intelligent). This is likely what got me my job since I don't actually think I'm a very good programmer. I'm certainly not one of those savants who started on their TI-83 in elementary school, but I get by. I think my main selling points (other than the above) are my desire and ability to learn. As other have already mentioned, technology is a swiftly changing field, so you have to be on top of things, even at companies that are fairly set in their ways (of which there are a lot).

As far as enjoying a coding job, I think there's a fairly simple formula that you can follow to determine if it'll be a good experience. This probably applies to many careers. You should try and get a job with either a product you care about or day-to-day work that is fulfilling. If you are invested in the product and want to make it better (like say... a video game you love), then you'll probably (not certainly) have a better workday. If you can't find a product you support, there's always the fulfillment of solving coding puzzles, learning new technologies, and exploring previously unexplored territories of functionality. Those make a job worthwhile even if the product you sell does not. Barring those, there are still ways to find worth in a job (people, services rendered, etc.), but it might be harder not to just grit your teeth and push through the day. I was having a tough time with my current job for a while, but I'm starting to find some worthwhile elements within (such as learning Agile training techniques, of which I'm a huge proponent).

Anyone will tell you that the best way to get a programming job is to program. If you like doing it and you make stuff, people will want to hire you. Some people I know make a distinction between "programmers" and "coders." Programmers go to work every day, make basic things work/solve IT issues, then go home. Coders live and breathe programming and spend their free time figuring out new ways to make things on/with a computer. It helps to figure out which you are (or where you are in between), then use that to determine what positions you want to seek.

The other way to figure out what you want is to just try it. If you don't like something, figure that out as quickly as possible (while still making sure you put as much effort into making it worthwhile) then jump to the next thing. Fail-fast is a good way to go because it means you have time to move on to something else and you've learned by experience what you don't like.

I believe a PDF version will be available, but don't quote me on that. I'd like a physical copy though.
