Doing gender for gender's sake I think doesn't solve the core problem of how a lot of games have bland uninteresting caricatures of characters and Mary Sues. Some really well done female characters like FemShep show that it's not really the gender that matters. It's about having a convincing story, dialogue and fleshed out characters. The underlying gender takes a back seat to just having an interesting character to begin with.
