Most people agree that you should at least read the first three books of the Horus Heresy. They're a good starting point to the series in general and should give you an idea what Warhammer 40k is like.
If you're interested they're Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames, in that order. They still publish those books I think so you should be able to find them at a local bookstore or order them from blacklibrary.com.
