Sure Bulbasaur gets messed up by everything, but in generation 1 at least I feel that there is less selection for solid grass type pokemon. Off the top of my head, I can only really think of Oddish, Bellsprout, Bulbasaur and I would say Paras but I don't think it's actually a grass type. But for water pokemon you have a whole slew of pokemon to choose from, so in that case I think Squirtle could be a little limiting. And then for the real plot twist, I think Charmander is my favorite generation 1 starter. Paras/Parasect, Tangela, Exeggcute/Exeggutor. Grass is a pretty poor type overall though, imo. When it comes to offensive power, it's good against Water, Rock, and Ground, and you likely already have a Water type, so grab an Electric type instead and also be covered against Flying. It's weak to Flying, Fire, and Ice, three pretty common offensive attacks.

Not to say Bulbasaur is bad. He's my favorite Grass starter of all gens, and is pretty cool overall. I just dislike Grass as a typing from a gameplay standpoint.

It's a mix of chess, shogi, Naruto's dumb (or at least badly played-out and not even relevant to the plot anymore) themes and inspirational war speeches, and a bit of Street Fighter in it too it seems.

Well, there's Water/Ground types and Storm Drain but those usually don't warrant a full Grass-type, just some coverage moves at best.
