Should be a fun season. I'm looking forward to seeing who makes it in, since those who are pre-qualified (Trap, Dream, Zoun, Zest) aren't really the normal names.
Same old boring maps (unless Pillars of Glod is a new map set in the village that was featured in Borat). I was hoping Afreeca would have picked up the slack in Blizzard's absence.
Well at least it's nice that GSL is happening soon.

They wouldn't randomly use new and untested maps in the qualifiers.

When was the last time GSL used maps that weren't part of the standard ladder pool? They had a 4 player map in a couple seasons ago didn't they?
I'm sure they'll add in at least one new map for this season. Korea has to be aware of how long it's been since the ladder map pool was updated, and their giant innovation to Starcraft in the first place was maps, so there's a lot of good reasons to be encouraged that new maps will be in soon.

This isn't brood war. Most new maps & testing was done by TL. The Korean scene is propped up by Blizzard dollars and will disappear in a year or two.

GSL literally brought their "own" map into the map pool in S1 last year (it was still made by a community member afaik, like they always have been.)

Yeah, it's not BW because there's money to be won.

there's more money in korean BW than SC2 tho
afaik
There's way more money in SC2 tournaments than BW tournaments but also far more money in BW streaming than SC2 streaming.

There's no money in BW tournaments, and there has never been. The lifetime prizepool of BW is 3 years of SC2. Korean BW players are streamers and content creators for AfreecaTV.

Nobody said anything about tourneys though. And the reality is that if you're not a top player you have harsh times getting any monies which would make this a valid long time career move.

Zoun. Thats it I think
And he was a pro-player back in 2012, I think the only truly new player since the 2012-13 switch and the last Kespa draft is Patience? (Maybe Armani too I don't remember if he switch with Samsung or joined after)
Edit: NVM I thought Zoun was a SKT/kespa player from the start, he wasn't, so Zoun it is!
Prince is a new player who qualified for the GSL last year.
Players like gyulzzing, NightMare, or Percival might be the new Korean blood, but they are still quite far from the top, and without infrastructure and the reduced number of big tournament they can participate in (or even qualify), I'm not sure they will be able to progress enough to do anything more than qualify for the first round of GSL. Maybe the new Code A will give them more chances to play big games.

But there are a ton of smaller, international events like Wardi does. Or the weeklies. I mean the "upcoming events" tab is always full of interesting stuff. Ofc there are some server issues but other than that? Can't imagine them not knowing about stuff like this

I have the feeling Team GP is actually doing a good job motivating its players to participate in a lot of qualifiers/tourneys. I saw a lot of their players in Qualifiers lately. Ryung and Tails are signed up in pretty much everything, Wardi throws out there. But some other Korean 2nd and 3rd Tier players just don t signup for a lot of stuff for some reason.
The argument, that they are probably not full time (like for example Prince) shouldn t realy matter, as pretty much the entire NA scene isn t full time either and EU Players like Kelazhur, Gerald or Gungfubanda (or Stephano when he was still at Uni) manage to maintain a decent level of play and of tournament participation, despite not beeing full time either.
Hey gang - bit of bad news. I’m afraid that there will be no broadcast of the GSL qualifiers this season. AfreecaTV staff told me it takes too much time to collect and check each replay, and of course, players are reticent to show their strategies before the season. I suspect that for these reasons, the GSL qualifiers will never again be broadcast.

Looking forward to the normal GSL season though.
Thanks for trying! It makes sense though. Any idea when the games are being played? I’m excited to see the results.

March 10th and 11th! Coming right up. Liquipedia is usually pretty good about tracking the challonge brackets, so you can usually follow along in relatively real-time.

Inno, Armani, Rogue, Solar qualify for Code S, joining Trap, Zoun, Zest and Dream from ST1. Maru, Cure, DRG and RagnaroK qualify for Code A. Tomorrow 12 more spots in Code A are up for grabs
Dark, TY, Stats, sOs, Bunny and Byun didnt even qualify for Code A yet. LOL, this is brutal. I am sure they will all qualify tomorrow, but Maru, Cure, DRG and Ragna are already waiting in Code A. Depending on the format, there is a possibility some big names might be eliminated :O
Edit: At least 2 players from this batch wont be able to make it to Code S. And that is only if the brackets are favorable and they wont get eliminated by each other
Parting, Patience, Byun, Bunny, Stats, TY, sOs, Dark, Hurricane, Special ought to be the shoeins - that's 10 players. Which leaves 2 spots for billowy/creator/younglings, maybe one or two more with upsets/bracket disparities

To be fair, the new Code A is just like Group Stage 1 of previous Code S, so he should be the player to beat in the Code A qualifers now, not in actual Code A
Dark and ByuN lost their seeding matches, which presumably means that they will be opponents of seeded players in code a. So TY, Maru, Stats could draw them and we would see some early eliminations of top players.
Qualifier Day 1 Group 1st (4 Players) -> GSL S1 Code S Day 1 Group 2nd (4 Players) -> GSL S1 Code A (Tier 1 Player) Day 2 Group 1st (4 Players) -> GSL S1 Code A (Tier 1 Player) Day 2 Group 2nd ~ 3rd (8 Players) -> GSL S1 Code A (Tier 2 Player)
Tier 1 vs Tier 2 players compete on the Bo5 in Code A and advance to Code S Ro.16.

so 8x1v1 Bo5 matches the winner of each moves on to Code S?

So... they're losing a large percentage of the viewership they used to get on Friday nights from the US now. I mean, I assume I wasn't the only one. This really sucks. I'm going to miss being able to watch GSL live
