@ZergJunO: Technically correct. Just as in the african qualifier there are sub-regions within the larger regions. Each region gets a certain amount of spots, so it's not like the top 16 in Asia-Pacific will be all Korean.

This event is organised by Alibaba, a Chinese online sale giant (more than ebay+amazon). There's no doubt that they indeed have a LOT of money, and the players will get paid, but don't expect that they know anything about esports. In their website, they even treated "Starcraft 2" and "Legacy of the Void" as two separate games for some time.

Likely there will be something like 2 spots for Korea, 1 for Australia, 1 for NZ, 1 for Japan etc... in the Asia-Pacific qualifier.

To be fair that region needs a big influx of cash a lot more than SEA

Wow, this looks great!! I wonder how the 8 slots for Europe + CIS will be distributed, like 2 for west, north, east and south or something like that?

...and yeah, great to see some action for Africa + ME, sadly neglected regions!

Lots of national/local-regional qualifiers -> EU finals -> TOP 8 gets slots. Much like WCS 2012.

It's clear they have a lot of money for them to not even bother researching the regions and identifying where relevant players reside. I mean, I'm not against supporting those scenes -- I'm sure they need it, but it's really just sort of ridiculous.

The first place prize alone would make this the 8th biggest SC2 tournament of all time, and whoever wins would be 24th all time for prize money if they started with nothing. Very cool stuff.

Hey, just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I love this announcement. Thank you for the massive infusion into the SC2 scene. It was necessary and needed.

I have one concern though: why is this event not a WCS Global event? It's surely got a big enough prize pool to have WCS points on the line. Is it just that you guys didn't want to have to work with the requirements and control that Blizzard wants in order to make your event a WCS global event or was it not something that you guys even thought about while planning?

Only asking because inclusion inside of an existing system always makes the scene stronger. Doing something unique, which this certainly is, but also allowing that unique thing to be done inside of the context of an existing system makes the system bigger and more inclusive as well as giving more press and legitimacy to the unique event.

I agree and disagree with you. I think that their intention was to establish something that the SC2 scene, and in eSports in genera, are both lacking currently: regions that are deeper and allow for more player diversity and inclusion, similar to that of the International Olympic Committee.

Say what you want about the IOC, the rules that were set up for the Olympics and the way in which countries and regions compete with one another is incredibly inclusive and allows the greatest number of excellent performers to rise to the top, despite not being from one of the more powerful or prominent regions. It provides a more level playing field for anyone that wants to participate, I feel.

Not to be overly critical of you Blargh, but the impact of what you were saying, from my perspective was "I don't want to see those regions compete, I want to see my favorite regions and players competing, despite the fact that I acknowledge that the regions that don't get attention need the attention." I'm sure that wasn't your intent with what you said, but it sounds like you're playing favorites when this tournament doesn't just want the typical players to come out and play, they want everyone that plays StarCraft to come out of the woodwork and try their best to reach that giant prize pool.

What doesn't make sense about them? Do you mean that you wouldn't organize the slots that way because you're asserting that some regions perform better than others and as such those regions should be allowed more slots because you want to see more of those players? Or are you saying that it doesn't make logical sense deriving from some other reason?

China, being the host of the tournament gets 1 slot that their players won't have to compete with the rest of Asia-Pacific group in order to get to the main event (there are 15 different regional qualifiers for the regional LAN that has only 1 spot feeding into the main event http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/World_Electronic_Sports_Games_2016/Asia-Pacific/China/Shanghai)

If the other regional qualifiers are as DEEP as the China ones are, there's no way we won't get an absolutely amazing main event. It's not like there are going to be 50 scrubs and 1 good player at the event.

I'm guessing if they were to make it a WCS event, Koreans wouldn't be allowed. So it's a good thing that it's not a WCS event

They have the money to make it a WCS Global event (one with Koreans and non-Koreans). I reckon the reason it's not is that the main event is after Blizzcon.

1. Not entirely sure yet, the asia-pacific qualifiers will be run by imbatv while we run NA/Africa/EU.
2. We will try to stream as many quali's as we can, but can't guarantee we stream them all.
3. I think Russia is included in CIS (so Europe-CIS).

Certainly exciting to see a tournament with such a big prize pool in starcraft! Takes place 39 on the list of the largest esports prize pool tournaments among cs:go and dota 2 tournaments. It's really good to see sc2 see some popularity again!

I have one concern though: why is this event not a WCS Global event?

This question is too complex to answer it in few words, but just think about rules difference (even the most simple thing: citizenship requirement in WESG vs P1 Visa / Green Card being OK for WCS), Global Grand Finals being played after WCS season is over, and so on. It's not just a question of somebody's wish. If WESG was included into some Blizzard & Valve tournament system, there would be a lot of additional headache for organizers I feel.
However, I'm not saying that WESG being part of WCS system is impossible in future. We'll see.

It's nice seeing players from this region making it to tourneys. But really i'd rather see anther Korean than someone from here getting 3-0'd in the first round.

In so far as the future of WESG: do you guys have any inkling of what kind of success you need in order to have a repeat of this event next year? If there's anything that I can do to contribute to this events success and to get it to happen again in the future, I'd love to lend a hand.

cool tournament though im pissed anz/sea is with korea. if korea knows about this tournament no way we can get a spot.

Looking at the qualifiers for China alone, it appears as though there will be a good number of segregated regional qualifiers before the regional LAN which is where the final spots are determined. It's likely there will be SEA/ANZ qualifiers which seed directly into the regional LAN, just like the runner up from the Chinese Regional LAN get's placed into the Asia-Pacific regional. The details are still coming out for this, don't let the "OMG KOREANS ARE GODS" mentality stop you from cheering on your favorite player/nation.

Would have been better to see a bigger price split than just top 3 to support a larger amount of progamers. With that amount of prizepool for Qualifiers there should be price for top 8 atleast - and verry atleast top 4.

also the eligible countries list does not mention israel , actually they specifically wrote State of palestine.

not buying it so far...if it was WCS global event then I'd trust the organizers but for now I'll stay sceptical.
We saw way too many of scetchy tournaments to just jump on a bandwagon.

Yeah, ever since WCG died we saw so many tournaments similiar to it. WECG, WESG, WCA, WEC, WPC. It's very weird.

Probably a lack of understanding of the demographics of esports professionals. If you just look at population alone there's about 1.5 billion people living in those regions.

Maybe because their scene is underdeveloped it is all the more important to provide some opportunities, no? Long overdue if you ask me.

Chinese tournaments never get the viewership or interest they deserve. Just look at NSL: huge prizepool, top players, barely over 2k viewers on English stream.

NSL is pretty poorly advertised, and casted by a community caster at a very bad time for NA viewers. It's sad that the viewership is low but Chinese tournaments aren't really concerned with non-Chinese viewership.

One thing that makes me wonder is whether this was known to the players in the Africa region before the announcement here - because if not, it's not very nice to just give them a week's notice to sign up for the possible biggest thing they have had ever a real chance to compete in, which then includes the prospect of travelling to Dubai etc... I really wish that in general tournaments started announcing themselves on longer notices, even with the risk of having the announcement not that bombastic and all at once.

Is it also clear how many Koreans will be in this? If there are 6 spots for the whole region, it's either 6 Koreans and bad luck for everyone who happens to be in the same region, or less than 6 Koreans. In either case, the potential for Korean-Western confrontation is quite diminished both by the small amount of Koreans and by the presence of players from irrelevant regions. The concept of "world games" simply doesn't work well with how the good players are geographically distributed.

I've got a question. Liquidpedia says winner of Chinese Qualifier advances to main tourney while 2nd advances to the Asian Pacific Qualifier. My question is does 1st in the Chinese Qualifier go to the Asian Pacific Qualifier even though they're already qualified for the main event? Wondering as the Asian Pacific Qualifier gives out a fair chunk of change.

Looks like the dates have been updated on the liquipedia page for the start dates. Jan12-15 for when the tournament is taking place. I hope there is more coverage for this then there has been. The SC2 scene could really benefit from a major tournament like this, but I'm afraid that its going to be a flop in terms of viewership outside of China.

It should pull the same kinda numbers as the other big SC2 cups on twitch. But it doesn't help only a handful of popular players are in it

One thing I noticed is that the date for the main event used to be a vague December 2016 but it seems it's been pushed back to Jan 12th-15th 2017. (source: Liquipedia)

Wonder why that is...

Yeah, one would think a tournament with such a prize pool would be a little better organized...
How come there was no official announcement?

The source for the date is a post by Scarlett on reddit by the way. I assume they pushed from December to January because they couldn't find a time slot they liked with WCA, IEM and Christmas/New Year all coming up.

I would assume they had no idea how qualifiers would play out so December was tentative and they now have an exact date.
If all men were created equal there would be no reason to declare it.

Some people say round robin is likely in group stage, winner of each group will get into Ro8 directly, runner-up of the group will fight with a 3rd place from other group to get Ro8 spot.

Let's hope this seeding does not bode ill for the overall quality of the tournament. Random seeding is quite old fashioned in esports. Hope they know what they are doing in other aspects of the event.

C has way more depth than D for sure. In D, assuming 3 players advance, TY, ShoWTimE and Kelazhur are the big favorites. While in C you can probably pick favorites too, I think any combination of Scarlett/iAsonu/Neeb/Major/Elazer taking the top spots is possible.

Well, lets see it this way:

Without groups of death, you could skip the group stage completly, because it was just clear who gets out and who not.

As we only lose 3 better players in the complete groupstage (1 in Group B, 2 in Group C), I can accept that.
Better players dont have the universal right to get easy groups, if they want to win, they have to be able to beat everyone anyway.

The playoffs wount be worse when, lets say, iA, Major and Harstem get out earlier. There would be still Namshar, XY, Stephano/DeMuslim, Nerchio, Maru, Marinelord, Scarlett, Neeb, Elazer, TY, Showtime and Jim/Kelazhur, that is still a pretty decent lineup for the nationality format.

You can now swap, lets say, Stephano/Demuslim with Harstem or Jim/Kelazhur with iAsonu/MajOr, but the overall quality of the playoffs wouldnt be harmed by that, while the quality of the groupstage games gets much bigger with how Group B and C rolled out.

I mean you can look at it two ways. Either you think everyone is equal and no matter what results you had in the past you have to qualify again and get no special seeding.
Or you think that you can truly say that some players are better and you wanna have a higher chance of having these players in the later rounds of the tournament because it produces better games later on.
While the first solution might be more fair technically it's imo flawed because we have the evidence that in fact not everybody is equal skill wise and having two S class players meet early in a tournament is extremely unfair to those guys (Zest vs Maru comes to mind)

Hmmm I guess group B in the GOD. Although Nerch/Maru/MLord are the favourates for sure. Beasty and Harstem can caused upsets, but I guess it will come down to who has this patch on lock.

Groups C gonna be close I guess. I can see scarlett/Elazer getting out dunno about the 3rd player. There isn't even PvP potential for me to favour Neeb in

If each of them ends first in his group they cannot meet untill the semis.
3 out of each group go on, the first straight to the quarter finals, the other 2 will play for a spot in the quarter final with others who ends 2nd and 3rd.

Group B the group of death? It looks most straightforward with Maru, Nerchio and Marinlord advancing. Harstem and Beasty could advance from group A, they would have huge problems in C and D.. In group C anything can happen, even Neeb could drop out. However most likely Neeb, Elazer and Major/Scarlett will advance.Group D - TY, Showtime and Kelazhur are clear favorites. Group A - It would be hard to create a weaker group on purpose, Stephano, Namshar and DeMuslim should take it, if they don't drink too much ;-)

I wouldn't say Harstem doesn't have a shoot there. He beats Uthermal quite often, and I guess with Uthermal there in Harstems place there is no 3 players you can say will advance for sure (apart for Maru, and may be Nerchio has an edge).
So its either Uthermals TvP isn't that strong, or Harstems PvT is quite strong. With 3 Terrans there Harstem has a fair chance. Maru advances probably Nerchio as well, but I don't know if its Marinlord or Harstem. Beasty can surprise us, but I don't think he will advance (although Demuslim advanced instead of Snute in the qualifier, so who knows).

Harstem is good, I just do not think he has a chance in this configuration. Marinlord plays different PvT and I would say T has a balance advantage right now. Especially if new map pool will be in progress and David Kim does not pull his things together.

15 games in each group, for groups of 6 players, mean Round Robin format...
...since the groups are of 6 players I would have preferred the "four 1st places directly in the Quarters and 2nd and 3rd places battle for the 4 remaining spots" kind of bracket... :/

According to their updated schedule, there are supposed to be 15 games in each group to be played over two days. Can anybody figure out the format for that??

knock out stage will start from quarter finals so top 2 from each group will progress.

15 games in each group, for groups of 6 players, mean Round Robin format...
...since the groups are of 6 players I would have preferred the "four 1st places directly in the Quarters and 2nd and 3rd places battle for the 4 remaining spots" kind of bracket... :/

yup round robin for sure but how?? even if they play everyone twice that will be ten games. sorry long day at work, brain isn't functioning well.

...take for example group A:
Stephano will play with the 5 players below him (5).
Drager will play with the 4 players below him (not with Stephano, they "already played" - meaning their match is already counted on the Stephano's one) (4)
Namshar will play with the 3 players below him (not with Stephano and Drager, they "already played") (3)
DeMusliM will play with the 2 players below him (not with players above him) (2)
XY will play with Erik (the only player he hasn't "already played") (1)
...in total they are 15 games...

2 sample combination out of 6, 6×5/2 = 15.

Hi,
On their website, playoff stage is like this, I suppose each group has 3 spots for playoff.

4 groups, 8 playoffs spots, so top 2 advance, not 3.

3 people have to advance. The bracket starts with 8 players and in the next round still has 8 players.

Hm just found out it is a 12 man bracket, I guess the 4 group winners are seeded into RO8, 2nd and 3rd place finishers are put into Ro12.

...official schedule looks weird, with no info on when Ro12 matches will be played and quarterfinals and semis played all at the same time (13:00 for qf and 15:00 for sf)...

EDIT: moreover, groups stage matches will be played 3 by 3 at the same time... I hope at least 2 of them will be streamed or it would really be a pity...

So apparently the prize pool for the SC2 main event went down by over 100,000$ (bottom of the page) from the original announcement.

About $100k was given away in the regional events. Maybe that's where it went

Original announcement from the OP has the prize money for the main event and qualifiers listed separately.

Although the original Hearthstone prize pool is exactly what it shows for SC2 on the site and the other way around. Maybe whoever is in charge of the site messed up and accidentally switched the numbers?

Hopefully, would be sad if TY only wins 150k

You're right, in the latest announcement, the prize pool for SC2 and Hearthstone are switched around as compared to the original announcement.
