Nice, Aligulac puts the two Protosses through :D, due to them having apparently favorable vZ to Life's apparently unfavorable vP. Ali was off in its WCS EU and AM predictions, albeit pretty close...so this time I'll guess Yonghwa in second and Life barely in first!
I think Yonghwa goes through easily. For second place, Dear and Life have both shown trouble lately so I'm not sure. Maybe Dark can pull through, maybe one of the two worked on fixing what needed to be fixed.

For Life that wouldn't be that big of a problem. Basically he should just use Swarmhosts, I mean... He was pretty good at it when he used them, but decided to play other stuff lately :-/

Negative, Maru to win it with mass Mines and a sprinkling of Marines!
Is anyone else having trouble with twitch logging them out? I log in so I can watch the stream in HQ, but the moment I click on the stream it logs me back out and I can't select anything higher than medium quality.

Can only happen if he doesn't hit a Zerg. Maru is going to lose against any Zerg that has the skill to make it through the Ro32.

I get it but ive never bothered to change it. My stream was always stuttering on anything other than medium, so i leave it on that - i dont have an issue with that quality

I don't have problem with lag normally, I'm in the US. Medium looks like crap.

There's enough weakness in the build that if you -know- your opponent is going to go for it that there should be some build that will counter it. Maybe proxy hatch the gold? ; )

cool mind games from Dark. i love players who go for the same thing twice, it usually throws the other player off, and puts him in a good position for the next game. Dear has to play safer, because that may be the only build Dark prepared. so Dark just plays greedy and gains an early lead.
As a terran I dont really care about this group enough to watch but I hope Dark gets trough. I remember him looking like he had some nice potential back on SlayerS.

Well when he was contract-less on Soul he had something to play and train for, now he's got his payday I wouldn't be surprised if he's relaxed his regimen a bit. Really doesn't seem like the same player as last year.

yeah, right. He blink microed. But anything else... messed up FFs, losing oracles to queens, getting half of his probes killed by mutas before reacting. Engaging mass roach with a few zealot/sentry.

Winning 2 of the most prestigious tournaments of the year in a row can't have been a fluke... can it?
Some people call it "momentum". One good player manages to pull really good results, and pile them up a bit thanks to "something" (confidence... ?)
skill
but it's totally understandable to see his results decline sharply after a significant environment change
Skill is a prerequisite I'd say, not "the reason", but that doesn't explain everything indeed (otherwise, we'd have an obvious best player in the world, but we don't).

PvZ on Alterzim is actually pretty damn hard. I don't know why Protoss always pick that map. sOs picked that map vs soO and got wrecked as well. It's quite confusing why, but hey I'm not a pro so I could be wrong, just seems Zergs have so much freedom on that map with so many bases so far away from everything. I think Dear will still come in 2nd, he just needed to warm up some more

Honestly momentum is a totally understandable explanation though no matter what it is, its very odd. Its really hard to chalk up his amazing play to momentum and then say this is his norm. Momentum really shouldn't affect his play so much he goes from someone that doesn't look like they should be in code S to a guy that crushes code s and the season finals. Especially when his bad play is coming when his race is arguably the strongest it has ever been. I gotta assume his team change is a big cause of it personally.
Ironically, Dear was one of the best Protoss at defending multi-prong attacks and harassment, like nobody could even touch him. Now he can't micro even in one fight, and if opponents attack him at multiple places at once, he completely falls apart. I just hope that he has a bad period and that he will get over it.

maybe they're expecting a game like San vs Life where protoss just gets so much money and such a good army that zerg cant beat it and even when zerg tries to trade vs it and remax on 45 mutas the protoss can just do a 5 stargate phoenix transition and hold it

Well to be fair he had to do blink micro to clean up the army at front. I dont think it is possible for a protoss without splash to be able to micro enough to get out of the situation he was in.

Ya I guess, but then why do some kind of low-tech push with Blink Stalkers and zealot sentry off 3base? Would've made more sense if he would've teched up but he literally just went with Gateway units.

YongHwa read that game pretty poorly. Maybe he felt he had to do an all in after the failed 4gate. But doing that attack without a +1 seems rather silly. Life sat +1 lings and +1 armor on roaches and lings with queens creep and spines. He should never of lost that and he didn't even look close too.

To be honest he holds that without MSC anyway. He had a zealot and 10 probes vs 4 drones and 6 lings? Easy hold, but for some reason YongHwa chose to block his wall with the zealot? Could of fought with it and his probes and would of been fine. There were going to be no other units coming in from Life he had pulled all his drones so i don't know why he would be blocking his wall? Unless he was scared Life was going to just run away? But even if he did just run out 2 Nexus + 2 chrono boost > 1 base zerg with like 5 drones.
Life is always gambling a lot with his builds, same thing when he made like 60 speedlings on 2 bases against Taeja, just to be deflected by 4 Hellions that were behind Supply Depots.
I wouldn't be surprised if he get back to Code A with that kind of play.

But even if he did just run out 2 Nexus + 2 chrono boost > 1 base zerg with like 5 drones.
also a MSC costs 100/100 i feel like this build can only work because of the MSC

I think it was such a rare situation that Yonghwa didn't know if more reinforcements were coming. Zealot at wall means Life couldn't cost effective break in or kill the zealot and the MsC would take care of the rest while his probes ran around. It was the 'safe' play.

It's ro32..
Yeah I know it is ro32 but a lot of guys who advanced didn't really look convincing at all so they will need to step it up quite a bit in order to go past ro16.
For example I remember WCS S1 with Soulkey vs. Inno finals was overall much better, even in the early rounds
01:00 - Probe scout from YH Gateway first He denies the hatchery from going down Life goes pool first
02:00 - Pylon block at the natural gas from Yonghwa Life takes the 3rd base as his expansion
03:00 - Lings coming out now and will clean up the pylon Nexus and Cyber core for YH Zealot from YH A probe comes out from YH
04:00 - Life expands to his natural now he didn't see the probe apparently lings get to the natural and see the nexus MSC completes so he wont get much done YH sees the 3rd base with his probe
05:00 - Warp gate research begins Stargate begins for Yonghwa

Even worst could of chrono'd out another Zealot and have 2 zealots but chose an ultra safe MSC lol. Strange. But all in all vs that opening Life was never going to win :s

Life showed us something really good, something that barely any Zerg is doing, and that is constantly making Queens and I mean constantly! In the end he had like ~10 or so Queens, always transfusing everything and keep trading good with blink Stalkers.

Yeah I was making mental notes of that as well. I was like 'how is he holding this' but the queen count just kept growing. Also pretty effective way to spend money in a situation like this as they use no larva.

In the actual context, maaaaaaybe ? But I can't say that Flash or INno are bad. They are not performing exceptionally well besides team tournaments, and I'd definitely wager that at the moment, players like Zest are better than those terrans, all bitching about balance aside.
Just look at the players participating, there's less heavy talented terrans at the moment compared to the Soulkeys Partings or Classics.

... which many lesser Zerg screw up. They pull the Queens and have no Larva left afterwards because they lose the injects :-P I've seen that waaaaay too often-

My opinion though
That's totally okay, discussion ^_^
Still, counting Flash, Inno, etc as B-list Korean and implying players in Code S are really good, well, I dunno...
Protoss? Mmmh Myungsik, Paralyze, Panic, wow top tier players indeed
Zerg? Hydra, Pet, Solar, DRG in his current form? Not that bad, but I would not rank them that good compared to the terrans that didn't make it.
As for the less talented terrans, well, the Polts, Taejas, MMA, Mvp, etc are all abroad now indeed...

He didn't know that he is behind in Roaches, he doesn't see what we see. He had to attack to try and at least do something because he was on 2 bases and Life was on 3.

What does that even mean. B-list korean Terrans playing in WCS KR are not on par with either YongHwa or Life. A-list korean Terrans playing in WCS are already qualified for ro16 :o (i mean Maru).
While I disagree with SetGuitarsToKill, I must also disagree with you. Are you really implying Flash, INnoVatioN, Supernova, GuMiHo are B-list korean Terran... ?
Another thing to note is that in terms of Code S quality talent that left to other regions Terran was probably hit the hardest. MMA Polt and Taeja are almost all certainly capable of being in code S and succeeding. For toss prolly just Hero and maybe MC. Zerg really just JD
RIP First
Wait did first leave? I didn't even realize that. (I would also like to add Jjacki to my list of terrans as well especially since he gave up his spot in code S this season)
Yeah First and YoDa left IM and tried for WCS EU but didn't qualify
Oh yeah I kind of remember that now. Neither were in code s though right? It seemed like First had been falling off a bit after looking amazing in S2 last year. Are they going to try and make WCS EU again next season or what?

They both lost in the 2nd round of Code A in the last season of 2013. Yoda started in Code A and First was in Code S but dropped down idk what their plans are for next season

No idea, but if Protoss breaks the 10/16 record, they break the 66.7% as well :-P
From watching Life recently I had the impression that his ZvZ was much improved. Seems it served him well enough today. Were the games vs. Yonghwa decent? I just woke up (and have to work soon).

Yeah, sick reaction and starsense against Yonghwa's all-ins. Dropped the 2nd game because he tried some weird ling/drone all-in against a FFE that narrowly didn't work because of Yonghwa's clutch defense.

I feel Lifes style makes him vulnerable to certain counter styles while Roro is a bit more "stable" or harder to figure out in a series if you know what I mean

I cannot see how anyone could argue otherwise at this point tbh. Roro is probably the nr2 zerg in the world atm.
I think RorO looks better because of his really good Proleague record atm. So, to be frank, it's too early to conclude that he's that good because RorO and Life had their ups and down. Nonetheless, I do see RorO as a scary Zerg player.
Are people seriously trying to argue Fantasy > Life? Of one weird ass game in PL where Fantasy basically did a build no one has ever done before in Life's first game in PL? That makes less than no sense. That game honestly felt like SKT were like shit Fantasy got Life lets just make Lifes head explode with some weird ass build maybe that plus him being nervous about his first PL game will give fantasy the edge.

my top 3 is soulkey, jaedong, roro in that order.
RorO´s recent rise is just seen in PL until now and that does´nt really mean that much. The same happened last year, when PL results made TL writers put Flash, Jangbi and Fantasy in the power rankings, although none of them deserved to be placed the way they were (Flash was probably top 10 back then, but not nr.3 And the other two should´nt have been in there.) I´d say SK is number one atm. and everything else is pretty undetermined. Life, RorO, soO, maybe even Jaedong or Hyun, could all be near.

There's a difference between bantering and raging comments. One requires wit. I wonder which one is which.
Hate these 3 nexus builds ;_; They normally provide awful games. Vs reactionary zergs they just make a bunch of roach hydra and win. If not we have 10minutes of nothing happening until someone makes a mistake of the Protoss decides, ok yeah i have enough time to attack.

Life played awesome today and handled his opponents with apparent ease. The drone pull game was silly but the rest of the series was really solid play. Also having fantastic ling micro doesn't make you a gimmicky player it means you have fantastic ling micro.

Is attacking a hatchery with lots of probes worth it? I always thought a pylon, and a cannon or two was better. Cannons at about 1000 hatchery HP though so he doesn't cancel.

The build he did was based around fast +3 no? Went 14minute hive into +3 into vipers. So why not just pressure run bys and wait for the +3 to finish. Would of put him 3-2 vs 3-0. Surely would of had way better time? Would of been more storms i agree but surely wouldn't of been that critical mass. The last fight when he gg'd out was just about to finish. If he didn't force the engage at the timing he did he would of been ok/better chance?

Tell me about it
Its all rather funny, considering that Life dominated during a period when Zerg was considered extremley OP. Life Fanboys should not complain about the current state of protoss, their favourite player earned a fortune by abusing BL/Infestor.
Kinda like Mvp dominated in a period where terran was considered OP, amirite?
What is actually the most efficient way to prevent a protoss from that ramp forcefield bullshit?
- Sporecrawler at the ramp? - Probably won't help, as the protoss just can drop the units anyway. - Spinecrawler up your main? - Pretty expensive and Hatch snipe is still possible - Rush Overlords Speed+Drops? - Expensive top, but might be viable, what do you think? - Burrow+Tunneling Claws? Might be viable too, to at least get the roaches in your main, what do you think? - Play Muta every Game vs. Toss.?

While those are still all better than Dark, lets be clear Taeja has done by FAR the most since leaving Slayers.
In time yes...
But MMA won a GSL/Blizzcup, that immediately puts him above any other player
Aren't we talking about post slayer's accomplishments? And really? does that mean Dear over Taeja for all time SC2 also? When was the last time MMA won a tournament? Taeja has been consistently one of the best players for 2 years and has had success in and out of korea (way more than MMA and just about anyone out and less in)
Ouch really bad engagement by Dark, really over-extended there. Dear looks much better now that he's made it to the late-game in a couple of these matches now. I think this is where he thrives.

You spot the prism coming in with an OL and then you have your army on both sides of the ramp while a queen focuses the prism. You just need a few roaches and lings to do it.

Exactly this. Also, zerg never seem to get any kind of defense in their main for things like this, which every other race eventually drops a cannon or a turret/bunker to defend certain things. Zerg is just really greedy that way.
dear should've lost after that failed immortal push but dark's mistake was game changing. after that dear had an army advantage but didn't do enough to prevent dark mining on 5+ bases. also that map favours zerg engagements a lot
Would anyone be interested in doing a march madness style bracket competition once the round of 16 is finalised. If i recall the ro8 is fixed based on groups right? So winner group A plays runner up group B etc?

You cant be serious, Taeja would be more successful than MMA, and I love MMA.
Easily more accomplished? Idk, Taeja has not won a GSL/Blizzcup/WCS Kor yet. He won more tournaments than MMA and even though they are premiers, they are no GSL´s. Nerchio has won a lot more tournaments than Taeja as well (mostly Zotacs) and I guess we can all agree on Taeja being more accomplished than Nerchio. Add to that, that MMA has won MLG/Iron Squid/IEM/WCS as well and is ahead on the money rankings, I don´t really see Taeja ahead anymore.

Go Muta or bank larva in the main for a huge round of roaches. Yes it's bullshit, but there are workarounds. I feel like stabbing my eyes with my dick whenever it happens, but the zerg has to expect it after holding off a big timing like that.

Add to that, that MMA has won MLG/Iron Squid/IEM/WCS as well and is ahead on the money rankings, I don´t really see Taeja ahead anymore.
compared to even a foreigner dense asus rog, gsl in 2011 just doesn't compare to how good players (specially koreans) are atm. i'd say that taeja's run through dreamhack winter was way harder than any tournament MMA has ever won.

People dumb down Taeja's accomplishments because he won them in other countries, but the reality is, he was smashing everyone, two years in a row - it just happened to not physically be in Korea when he was doing it.

Obviously it's true. If you took MMAs actual skill level in late 2011 and threw him at any foreigner in 2014, he would probably get smashed hard. Compared to his peers at the time, he was obviously very strong.

This is so untrue its not even funny. Taeja this summer and last summer looked basically on another level than anyone else. He would just beat players without breaking a sweat. Look at his run through IPL TAC 3 in the first summer of taeja. Or Dreamhack winter this year. Hell look at his run in the last WoL GSL where he was the last terran despite the MASSIVE balance favoring zerg then.

You can not simply compare tournaments in two different eras by listing the names in them. Fact is in 2011 GSL 2011 was the hardest tournament in thw wolrd and in 2013 the 2013 GSL was harder than DH Winter. If you look at who was´nt at DH, there is RorO, Soulkey, PartinG, Rain, Jjakji, Dear, Bomber, ..... When MMA won the GSL, the entire world calss was there and he emerged victorious.
Another example: Naniwa made top 8 in DH Winter 2013 and top 8 in GSL 2012. What do you think, he is more proud of?

This is true and I think the argument Tajea has over MMA is consistency not quality of wins. Dreamhack winter was amazing and probably the hardest non WCS event that year but Code S is still code S. Taeja however has dominated two separate time spans which is something no other player has done. Plus the amount of premier tournament wins is pretty insane. This past spree by Taeja is surpassed by only MVP IIRC. Combine that with him actually being very succesful in Korea. (2 ro4s including last terran in WoL, barely was knocked out his last season in ro16 two more ro8s) he was incredibly consistent once he switched to Liquid and made a name for himself.
TaeJa won't win a GSL because he's more of a weekend player than he's a preparation one. Most of the tournaments he wins have only been a couple of days long. I think he said in his Grilled interview with Thoorin that he struggles when he has to prepare for an opponent and as a result loses.

One of them was against Life where until DH he has always struggled against and the other was when it was basically a miracle a terran had even made the ro4. By making the ro4 at all it kind of disproves your whole he can't do well in a preparation style tournament. He is better in the weekend ones (he honestly is probably the best player in the world at those) but he is still incredibly talented and could win a GSL for sure.

You´re avoiding my point. Was it one of the most stacked tournaments in 2013? Yes. Was in the hardest DH ever? Probably (Buchrest was also pretty crazy this season). Was it as hard as 2013 GSL? No.
The game evoloves. That´s just what sports do. Matti Nykänen set the Ski-jumping world record with 182m in 1984. In Vikersund/Planica today, that might not be enough to get into the top 30. Are all the currents worlds top 30 better Skijumpers than Matti Nykänen? Absolutely not! Ralph Craig won an olympic gold medal in 100m-sprinting in 10.8 seconds back in 1912. 100 years later, the same time would have been eliminated in round 1. Are all the people today better sprinters than him? No.

If you look at who was´nt at DH, there is RorO, Soulkey, PartinG, Rain, Jjakji, Dear, Bomber, ..... When MMA won the GSL, the entire world calss was there and he emerged victorious.

Then the question is, how highly consistency is valued. I personally can´t put him above MMA based on consistency, when he still misses the GSL title. That being said, please note, that we are not talking about Taeja vs GSL here, we are talking about Taeja vs MMA. MMA has proven multiple times as well over the years, that he is far from being a one-hit wonder. I´m happily putting Taeja above a lot of GSL champs, but MMA is just another caliber than most of them.

He's had 2 ro4 runs in GSL's, its not as though he's gate-keeping the Ro16
Yeah and notice how he got smashed in both of those RO4's
One of them was against Life where until DH he has always struggled against and the other was when it was basically a miracle a terran had even made the ro4. By making the ro4 at all it kind of disproves your whole he can't do well in a preparation style tournament. He is better in the weekend ones (he honestly is probably the best player in the world at those) but he is still incredibly talented and could win a GSL for sure.
Actually it kind of doesn't. Great preparation players overcome said disadvantages, Taeja never really has. He usually does well in Ro32 and Ro16 because they're more weekend-style than preparation style, and he has undeniably great raw skill that pulled him through the Ro8 both times. Back in GSL Season 4, Life completely smashed Taeja 3-0 while only barely beating Mvp 4-3, while Taeja was completely demolishing weekend tournaments and Mvp was trying to spare wrists (though he did win an IEM against foreign Zergs).
I know Mvp is probably the greatest preparation player, but that goes to show what kind of difference it could potentially make. Taeja definitely has the raw skill to do great in GSL when he's on point, but if he encounters someone who knows how to prepare and isn't too nervous I feel he would still have a very difficult time regardless.

The Tournaments Taeja won since 2012 were some of the hardest in the world. Dreamhack Winter he beat: Innovation, sOs, ForGG, Patience, MMA, Life and Life again.
MMA in his Code S run beat: Keen, Nada, lost to Nestea, asd, Clide, Happy and MVP.
I wouldn't say his Code S run is worth more than Taejas run.

The game is more difficult now than it was in 2011, and I think its safe to say Dreamhack Winter was one of the most stacked tournaments of 2013.
No.
This. During mma's prime, he was unquestionably the best TvZ player in the world. Only drg could compete (and still lost more often than no). In TvT it was much the same (he lost a bit more there) but I would still say top 3. He won 2(?) gal (maybe one was that blitz cup) and a couple foreign tourneys. At the time, he was playing the best there was and winning (dominating vs zerg).
When can that be said of taeja? Yes he is one hell of a player, but was there ever a time period where he was the best at something? He wins lots of stacked tournaments, but I've never seen him beat the best players. Just a collection of 5-through-20. Which is still an impressive feat for sure. I won't take that away. And has he shown to be more consistent than mma? Fuck yes. But he doesn't stand up to mma in his prime (imo)
Ps sorry for any bad grammar, from phone -_-
Pss glad dear made it through, I've almost given up on him since mouz XD. He's a shadow of his former self atm. Also nice to see life back in r16,well see if he can make someone of it now.

With regards to the preparation thing, he was the most consistent Terran of 2012 when it came to the GSL, and last year he wasn't in Korea for WCS (mostly) - so we can speculate on how he would have gone (from both sides, good or bad) - but we wont know. What he did do, was prove, against world class competition, that he can beat anyone.
Also, I personally wouldn't call Life a 'strategist', but hes won two GSL's - and I'd base that on his brute force skill and ability, with whom I draw similarities to Taeja.
One part that surprised me though, was the bolded bit above
Taeja has been the best in the world on more than one occasion, and as recent as December last year he was the best in all 3 matchups, and has also been elite in all three categories (TvZ, TvT and TvP) at different stages in his career - especially TvP and TvZ, he was a fucking maniac last year.
Also; He was in the best game of 2013, which was against Innovation, who was apparently the best player in the world, and Taeja won that game.
P.S - as I said at the start of this, I love MMA, he's one of my favourite Terrans, I'm not bagging him at all. I think people tend to easily dismiss Taeja simply because of the lack of GSL title. Yet you have other players (Seed, Jjakji, Sniper) who have won GSL's, obviously had a moment of dominance and have since disappeared and making a counter argument to the rule (exception made for Jjakji maybe as he resurfaced recently quite strong). It's definitely "THE" tournament to win in Starcraft 2, but point being that when Taeja is at his peak, he peaks hard, and it just comes across as a bit tunnel vision to not hold him in high regard because of a singular trophy. I think Taeja has proven time and time again that he is an exception to the tunnel vision rule of "if you havent won a GSL, you cant be the best" - it's not his fault Soulkey wasn't at Dreamhack winter
I do like this back and forth though! but fuck I'm tired - so peace, see you all on Friday for Zealously's favourite group of the Ro32.
What? He was unquestionably the best TvZer 6 months ago into his dreamhack run, his TvT was arguably 1st with supernova and maru, and of course his TvP was #1. I'd say he was more dominant than MMA was in his prime

Ro2 and winning one GSL is actually more consistent than what Taeja did...
MMA won when Terran was OP, the quality of players was weak compared to now and nearly every game MMA played in GSL was a TvT. MMA also only dominated before the Kespa switch. Whereas Taeja dominated when Zerg was OP with a win rate of 80% in TvZ.
Raw skillwise, I think Taeja is probably the best player in the world, but he performs much better when he doesn't have to prepare. I'd love to see MMA almost win an entire Team league against all the top korean teams almost by himself like Taeja did.

Ah, the old 'players now are better than then so old achievements mean less'-argument. I don't think it holds up. Is Dear more impressive than Mvp because he won tournaments late 2013 compared to 2011 and early 2012? Of course not. And if you want to talk about Zerg being OP, Taeja had already fallen off by the time Zerg dominance really began to spread across all tournaments, and the next time (a year later) we could argue that he 'dominated', Zerg was hardly overpowered.
In terms of raw skill, I'll just not touch that argument. Taeja fans bring up IPL TAC and rightly so, but it's not the be all end all of achievements, especially not when much of it was played online.

Taeja never particularly dominated zergs once they reached full sync with the worst patch of all time. And his winrates (around a 67% during his GSL tenure) were inflated by less than impressive patch zergs. MMA sliced and diced the best zergs like Booby Flay while he was in his prime. His 87.6% winrate was pretty much consisted of all Code S level zergs including Nestea, DRG, and Leenock (with a sprinkle of Zenio).
In TvT they were even overall, with MMA having a seemingly more impressive hitlist.
Taeja was clearly better in TvP, especially since he had fantastic ghost usage. MMA's TvP was actually very formidable in mid-2012 though, so I wouldn't discount that as a complete loss in his favor. MMA was famously weak against P before that, but there was also the time right after the emp nerf where Taeja went full child. I still remember the iccup weekly where he met Puzzle, claimed that protoss was OP, and then played random and lost. Which was funny because he laid down an ungodly beatdown on Puzzle only a month later (with ghosts).
All in all they are very neck in neck. If we check ELO though, we can see that MMA was indeed the higher rated player... by 1 point. So how about we stop trying to burn either one of my two favorite players?
