I mean. Racism is an issue. Firing and creating outrage at someone who manifestly doesn't have a single shred of racist agenda in his mind isn't the solution.
If you can't see how the answer is disproportionate, I'd suggest priority checks.
agenda is not the point of racist actions. no, no one thinks terry hates black people. that's irrelevant. in most ways, hidden, subtle, unconscious racism is far more damaging than the mythical overt racism that we have pretended to eradicate as a social force. if you take a racist action without knowing it, or without "intending" to marginalize or attack a marginal party, then the idea is that there are greater social forces at work, which continue marginalization far beyond the cartoon racism people still associate with the term. even from the small point of view of the esports community, do you really want to alienate people like that? people who are passionate enough about the game to show up from far away to watch starcraft with strangers? now take that idea and replace "starcraft" and "esports" with "large western society" and try to imagine how that works. even if the guy 100% brushes the encounter off, it is impossible to think that this has zero effect if you have any understanding of the subtlety of human relations. we aren't robots.
newspeak at its finest. We don't have any hard data to support that claim but let's argue it anyway. because people are made out of sugar.
what are you, an economist?
at least elaborate on your theory of sugar people, now i'm intrigued
On August 12 2013 06:55 Matta wrote: why is the ability to make that joke more important than creating a community where people feel welcome?
It's not that. it's just that often times, people DONT FEEL PUT OFF BY THAT. Not everyone is super sensitive about race, and others are. That's just the way it is.
I hate people who are super sensitive, I think it's the wrong take on it, but I respect that they have that opinion and Im not gonna be able to change that stuff or say that it's objectively/scientifically wrong or something.

Here is the low-down.
Terry the Intern called a black person black, gets fired on stream by Frodan.
Jaedong 6 pooled Scarlett out of the tournament. People think Jaedong is disrespectful and is killing esports.
I sense a heavy bias here but thanks for the information.
It's not because my name is BlackPanther.
ROFL I didn't even notice that. Am I going to be fired now?

It was SC2 related, diversity is SC2 related. I want to see different people watch starcraft, young, old, beautiful, less beautiful, male, female, black, red, white, yellow, whatever. It's all fine, sometimes someone will stand out (just like the white guys in Korea) and there is nothing wrong about it.
And when I watch the stream I want to see this happen.

Also, did anyone ask the black guy if he was offended? Or does that not matter?
no it doesn't matter. b/c teh black guy must be protected from teh evil terry.
Terry learned a harsh lesson today that all racism isn't equal. Can make fun of other races, especially asians, like incontrol has done on stage before saying all koreans look the same. However, as soon as you do the same for a black person, then the wolves come out and everyone gets butthurt.
It's a huge overreaction by nasl. In both cases of terry or incontrol, neither really meant any harm or racism, but the amount of backlash received in both cases is way disproportionate. I don't really have a prob with either cases, but the differences in reaction annoys me. People laugh at incontrol, since all asians look the same is a common joke, but people want terry to burn just because he joked about jamal being the rare black guy in the audience. Both cases were just harmless jokes.

lol you're overreacting. it far from clearly ruined that guy's day, he seemed fine. If it did offend him, he wasn't letting it show that much besides anything more than slightly skipping a beat.

Wow you know so much about that guy. Amazing tbh
"Clearly ruined that guy's day" he's the one saying he knows stuff about him. What I meant to say is that we don't know if it ruined his day, but he seemed fine.

All that matters is if the community itself is offended... OBVIOUSLY -_-
