This is checkmate, Ryung lost a lot of bases and now Polt has the big strategic position over him.
The decisive moment was when Ryung lost a good portion of his Marines when trying to counterattack Polt. Once he lost all those Marines, it gave Polt the opportunity to destroy two of Ryung's bases unopposed besides Orbital Commands, and secured him the better position by destroying a few Tanks as well.

I'm guessing polt was so cost efficient due to having like 10 more medivacs? I'm a bit confused about it, since if anything I felt Polt kept loosing more rines to tanks and at the start he wasn't really getting many tank snipes...

This for me is what started Polt's march to victory.
Marine-tank vs marine-tank still makes for some really entertaining games! Interesting to see their different approaches to the game, Ryung trying harder to deny bases with drops while keeping a high SCV count while Polt went for a bigger army and stronger map prescence.

Polt's mistake was taking the long way around into the third base allowing reinforcements easily to defend the third base. Ryung demonstrated the better attack path is the one that targets units attempting to reinforce from the natural and if the player is out of position it is terribly punishing.
that was a pretty sick match! somehow they were able to produce some kind of dynamic map split situation with shifting control of the two main pathways on the map...
The game was lost for polt for the last 15 minutes, but somehow they only played chess always threatening the bases of each other. but never really trading army for army
I know MLG have made some screw-ups with WCS, and I understand the frustration that there aren't more Americans (however defined), but with Ax n' Ax casting, with these two players duking out live tens of floors above New Yawk, I just can't fault them.

as long as there is no air control you can reinforce the gold quiet easily and use the middle force to flank if they wanna go for your other bases. You need an advantage to take it though, but so do you if you wanna take the corner expansions. I guess the biggest thing for me is that I can get a key sensor tower position and deny doom drops directly in front of the natural. But pros avoid this area in each matchup as if you catch a disease there.

I expected more from Polt in game three, but he made bad mistakes and his build became unoptimized against Ryung's. Still, good series from both players.

Was about to rag on Polt for not having a turret or two in that spot, but in that situation I'm not sure even a few turrets would have stopped the tanks from unloading, Polt was just too far away from his main base when Ryung loaded up...but maybe Ryung would have hesitated

A little off topic, but shouldn't they play this group round robin since one player dropped out? Assuming all players have equal skill (50% chance to beat each other), the player that gets the walkover has a 75% chance to finish in the top 2, and a 50% chance to finish first out of the three players.

Something that comes into play in a long game is the total mental fatigue though. Ryung just came out of a ~2 hr series and if he loses this series he'll have to play 3 TvT bo3's back to back. I can't imagine he'd be playing at his best if he has to do that.

Is not that ryung cheese failed but rather he got super greedy with his cheese. The camera didnt focus too much on it but all his army at the natural of Alive was focusing the CC down rather than fighting off the 10 marines of Alive. Ryung had a tank and 10 marines of his own if he would of fought the army and then went in for the SCVs plus CC he would of won but instead he thought he could get the CC with all his focus fire. He also had his viking there and threw it away rather than sent it home when he decided to focus down Alive's CC
GSL group format is so broken when someone forfeits... They should just have it in their rules that if someone forfeits it switches to a round robin format
Polts master plan. Wear out Ryung but let him win. Let him fight against fit Alive while taking a PoltNap and then play against Ryung who just played a marathon.

I really dont get why those high level terrans dont just build a turret per mineral line and be done with all that harass. That looks like a more cost effective way to deal with it than constantly scanning..
Ofc ideally you could be better off if you dont invest in static d and just defend perfectly but than you cant move out and the other ones gonna micro too...

If you build even a single turret, that's guaranteed damage dealt by the banshee. If you build 2, or more, obviously that's even more damage. It's possible to take zero damage with vigilante play (which is obviously preferable).
Im not sure it is if he has cloak and goes to both bases, you will inevitably lose something since you dont have the gas to have 2 ravens and vikings at that stage. (without severely gimping your own build, and losing because you have no fighting units)
But even if you could defend it perfectly, which is highly unlikely, its not like 200 minerals will put you out of the game, in those builds they were using marines as a mineral sink. 4 marines wont lose you the game. Its still way better to build a turret IMO

Yeah but ryung is abusing the fact that you dont build a turret. First with widow mines then with banshees. The amount of scans needed for that or rather the saved energy for mules is just not worth it i think...

Well zero damage is an exaggeration of course - especially at the level guys like Ryung play at. The issue is that cloaked banshee is a build that needs to do damage to put the players on an equal footing. The more you invest in static defense, the easier you're making it for the cloaked banshee player; you're guaranteeing that the build does some noteworthy damage (rather than, say, picking off a couple of marines).
I obviously agree that it's better to invest in static defense than straight up lose the game. But you've got to consider that at the level these guys play at, they're playing for every advantage they can get - they're not merely trying to equalise the game (which is effectively what building static defense does).

At times I feel Polt should have been more aggressive with his drops to really abuse the immobility of Mech against Bio. Even though he had a few good engagements, aLive's infrastructure was ultimately undamaged, and Polt didn't exploit his moment of weakness.

Well, Polt was in the hardest group, and he lost 1-2 twice, so he wasn't really crushed one-sided.
Do we know if they're doing round robin to decide that or?
Pretty sure WCS EU is doing a consolation bracket instead of round robin so probably the same thing for WCS America. I guess we'll have to wait and see the draw

Both Moonglade and Snute got the best R8 draw possible (except against each other). Moonglade wanted ZvT and he got ZvT against Ryung who hates TvZ. Snute, who 4:0'ed Symbol not that long ago, got a ZvZ against Revival who has looked shaky against non-Korean Zergs recently.
not really surprising to me, polt tvt seems weak when watching his stream compared to other terrans, would ve been a better group for him if violet was there (as strange as that sounds lol)
