The time has come for our forty-ninth IGN Pro League Fight Club! In this special edition IPL Fight Club, we've got our current Champion, Polt, facing off against our returning Champion, HyuN, in a Bo11 for $8,000 dollars and all the marbles at the Palmer Events Center in Austin, Texas. This match will be played in Wings of Liberty.
When: Friday, Mar 08 9:30pm GMT (GMT+00:00) (we will also broadcast the match repeatedly afterwards!)
Polt Polt took down one of the best Wings of Liberty players, Creator.Prime last week, and he's back to take all of HyuN's Fight Club glory. HyuN had an outstanding run last year, but Polt advanced further at IPL 5 and has proved his mettle over and over in live events. On top of that, he lives in Austin! The hometown hero doesn't have to travel at all - he's studying English at UT Austin - while HyuN will be fresh in from Korea. Note: this may be the only match-up in which IPL staff are not biased towards HyuN. We're great friends with Polt and I know I'm rooting for a 6-5, all-the way, nail-biter in favor of ... damn, I just can't decide who to root for!
VS.
Quantic.HyuN HyuN performed so well in Fight Club, we renamed it HyuN Club. The kid went 14-1 against some of the best players in the world - PartinG, Squirtle, GuMiho, Life etc. - and only lost to Leenock fresh off of a win from IPL 5 and the MLG Fall Championship. However, SXSW won't be played in HyuN's bedroom, and he'll be jet-lagged, playing on new maps, and hoping to live up to everyone's expectations. Can the HyuN reclaim his title and become the Ultimate Fight Club Champion?
The first map will be on a set rotation, and then it is loser's pick. Maps will be played twice if required.
Casters
This event will be cast by Andrew "Kibbelz" Dunne and Kevin Knocke!

Note: This is a special showmatch as part of the Fight Club series. Polt will remain HotS Fight Club Champion and HyuN will be eligible to challenge regardless of outcome.

With everyone gone at SXSW, we haven't had time to sit down and plan out how we'll address the IPTL Finals. We'll have more news next week. I know it sounds straight forward, but I don't want to promise anything and then be unable to deliver. People don't like it when you cancel things last minute...
A bit disappointed that it had to become WoL, but this should still be an epic match. Being WoL and all, and looking at their TvZ and ZvTs, I would say HyuN is favored here by a long shot, but Polt might be able to pull off some victories.
HyuN 6-3 Polt
(P.S. Does this count as an official FC, and the winner continues to next week? Or is this a standalone showmatch under the guise of a FC?)

So Creator lost his shot at $8000 in WoL by losing in HoTS after 4 win in WoL? Not sure how that works but OK.

We asked Creator if he'd like to pause his streak until he felt comfortable playing HotS. He declined and decided to continue straight into HotS. HyuN and Polt were already decided as the SXSW Showmatch, and it was just coincidence that Polt was the fight club champion at the time and we thought, hey, this would be a fun theme!
Why was HotS not available during this event? IEM got HotS servers, and if IEM can get HotS, surely IPL could, or am I just forgoing/ignorant of an important detail? People expected HotS because it would continue the trend of FC, but the sudden change to WoL did come suddenly, and it caught people off guard. Any reason why WoL was chosen? Would appreciate an answer if you can give one IPL.
Conspiracy theory: Hyun has in fact become IPL Hyun and the $5000 for winning this event is part of his salary, they are playing on WoL to ensure his victory.

My guess is that IEM is live and the HotS server is actually on site.

Polt was one of the terrans that still beat zerg in WoL. They were on the same team for so long they both know each others tvz inside out. Infact each of them is the reason the other is soo good at the matchup. I think Hyun will take it because Symbol has said Hyuns been the king of the training house even before he was doing well in tournemets.

It's a competition, not a charity, of course money goes to best players...

Seriously? The money goes to the players that people want to see. Mostly, these are the top players. Although sometimes, players will be popular for their personality or creative play.
This is awesome. But I don't understand this. How did IPL get cancelled and Fightclub still flourish, even get a 8000 price for one set of game. That's insane high. Fight Club along with the GSL final will be the final bell for WOL. Pretty cool, hmmm?

8000 is a drop in the bucket compare to something like IPL. Just the travel and board for all the players would have been costly.

SXSW is paying for this prize pool. IPL didn't have any big sponsors.
Amazing first game by Polt. This evening's gonna be good

They randomed into each other on ladder as they were practicing just before the first match started, a match which HyuN won. So 1-0 Polt in the games that count, but strictly speaking they're 1-1 for the night

Ok, I was scared that they played the wrong map first or something..
Is Hyun just trying to give us a good show, or has he played so much HotS that he's forgotten how broken the infestor broodlord combination is in WoL? He can be pushing into gg any time.
Game 3 is just being insane. Such a slugfest between these two. I never realized how much I missed HyuN Club till now that it's back, even if just for a showmatch. Give us more HyuN club!! :D

I'm not so sure that HotS has really changed THAT much about Brood / Infestor o.o ravens aren't dead weight, fungals do slightly less damage, and terran air shares armor upgrades with vehicles (which means nothing if you don't play mech)

New Seeker missile is like old fungal, just wait until you see it showcased in a pro match.

Like old fungal, except it's actually awesome to see in action. <3

I've used it, and it works amazingly, provided your opponent doesn't react at all. They honestly should leave the missile mechanic as it was in WoL, that would be awesomesause
Bad decision making from Polt. No way he should have lost from the position he was in. Just needed to go home after killing Hyun's 4th and take his own 5th.

He can't take 4th and 5th at the same time with mech vs roach on this map. Mech is terrible vs Z but it's also a terrible map for mech :D

or he could have established the top right base at some point in the game.... it was like he totally forgot about it...

Sounds like garbage to me.
Sounds garbage? You shoulden't have spent so much time with your sheeps. Late WoL Zerg is just stupid.
Edit: This post is just out of pure frustration in Me vs Zerg... because I think its not balanced. Just my opinion. Edit2: And i'm a Polt fanboy :p
Wonder why Polt is playing more Mech recently. I remember his stream yesterday when he Meched, but he seemed to have some trouble with it against Zergs.

Polt did beat him 2-0 rather easily (and put an end to HyuN's 5 win streak) in the GD Studio HotS KotH like 12 days ago.

The game is still new- to make such a blanket statement for the whole future of the game is ridiculous.

Yes it is a stupid statement. But for the moment its true

You are absolutely right. I just felt like sharing the only result (that I know of) between them so far.
It's Icarus. You either turtle/bunker or do an all-in.
I mean, he held Hyun's ling/baneling attack last time on Icarus (which he would have held again if that's what Hyun went for), but it's Icarus. Can't go super greedy.
On March 09 2013 09:32 PhoenixVoid wrote: I think the casters vastly over-exaggerated how behind HyuN was after that Ling flood. HyuN still had three bases with a good Drone count.
He was never behind really, he had 3 bases (they were acting like triple orbital on two bases was way better or something), those lings still have use later, and his worker count was good.
Pretty good series. IMO Polt was at a bit of a disadvantage having only practiced HoTs recently while Hyun was still training WoL in Korea for GSL. Also it was FC and EVERYBODY is at a disadvantage to Hyun in FC.
GG's Hyun and I hope they continue doing FC because Hyun needs the cash-money!

Hyun had to fly in from South Korea, I think that makes up for it.

HyuN has been practicing HotS too. He's been playing in numerous online HotS tournaments and played HotS exclusively on stream for a bit.
