Part of it is an ongoing joke, partly because he takes out fan favorite players, partly because he made Eve cry, and partly because he badmouthed Terrans who were complaining about balance.
His personality also isn't very interesting, so we made him a villain to fill in the holes.
esports really needs a villain. There hasn't been a really good Korean villain in a looooong time. It's good for the game, makes it more fun

Thebest is like a kids movie villain. Falling and stumbling towards evil plots that get foiled easily with laughs. Sniper is like the fucking Joker... Just creates chaos wherever he goes...
If Sniper was a villain he'd be cold, clinical, dispassionate. He'd be like a boring, faceless archetypal 'behind the scenes' villain without a kind of defining characteristic

Regardless of his popularity, it's really nice to see that he gains the championship of the best league in the world just to confirm the fact that he is at the moment by far the best player in SC2.
This really represents a next step in Sniper's career. At the beginning of this season, nobody ever looked at Sniper as if he was a championship contender, but with this, it's undeniable that he is a legitimately top level player.

Funny cause DRG came up the same way, taking out the established top players in SC2 and people started calling him a legend killer too, and he's charismatic.
