Iron Squid II starts and it’s about time! Long have been the months since MMA grabbed his mask of victor, Wednesday is the start of a new chapter. Iron Squid will have a strong start as the first group is also the only group with four Koreans. For the opening game, HerO – an Iron Squid first timer – faces aLive who ended up fourth in the last Iron Squid. The other match will be a ZvZ between Symbol, May’s runner up, and Golden the NA qualifier winner.
Since he came to Paris where he arrived with the crown of IPL 4 champion, it all has been gloom and doom for aLive. GSL was really rough with him as he struggled for a while between Code S and Code A, managing to make his way through the Up&Downs before inevitably falling down to Code A. He kept his head above water until the 5th season where he was defeated in the first round by Flying, a KeSPA Protoss. Team leagues were not more merciful with the Terran as Fnatic lost several players during the last month and was quickly ousted from GSTL. aLive comes back for Iron Squid II with a strong will to show the dog days are over and he is anything but done.
HerO, the real king in the North
When he was the first Korean to join Team Liquid, expectations were big but he was yet to prove his worth. HerO confirmed that he was champion material and he enters Iron Squid II as a two times DreamHack winner. Beastly in offline events, HerO is also good when playing online. He has helped Liquid to do well in team leagues, and managed to qualify to several big events. Europe has been kind to HerO and his first step to Paris is a very tough group. In both WCS and DreamHack, HerO showed he does not fail in group stage, even when in troubles. In Shanghai he beat Stephano, finding the mental resources to bounce back after his earlier loss, a strength that he often lacked.
The face up
It looks quite simple to predict as HerO just obliterated TaeJa in Sweden while TaeJa is currently way hotter than aLive. The Fnatic player probably doubts himself after his loss to Flying in GSL. Nevertheless, it is too early to bury him alive as he is more comfortable when playing as the challenger. When he faced MC in the rounds of 8 of Iron Squid I, he was not expected to be the one to reach Paris, but still he made it.
Symbol, Iron Squid’s emblem
Even though he did not win the first chapter of Iron Squid, Symbol gathered all the attention of the fans thanks to his amazing plays. Surprisingly, Symbol is still yet to win a major title as he returns to Iron Squid. Therefore, Symbol will really be willing to make of Iron Squid II is own story. It is one tough group but Symbol overcame the same situation once, he can do it twice. Lately the Zerg has not been running as hot as he used to during the summer, he will have to go back to his basics: the preparation of his games. He can still count on his team mates and on the great coach Lee to do so.
Golden, Iron Squid’s new nugget
Golden might not be the shiniest of all the names in Iron Squid but he remains a dreaded player. Nobody should forget that he was formed within SlayerS house’s walls as many great players were. Golden was one of the first players to leave SlayerS to try the foreign adventure. He made his debuts with LighT, a team in which he did well at Home Story Cup and even in Korea as he made his way to Code A where he lost to Keen. His performances got him to get the interest of the bigger teams and he was soon recruited by Quantic gaming. Rather under the radar during the summer, he has been on the comeback lately as he managed to qualify to both IEM Singapore and Iron Squid II. Although he is the challenger of the group, he will not be an easy prey.
The face up
Symbol has been training heavily in ZvZ as his GSL Ro16 group was a full Zergs one. Yet he did not make it through, ending up being defeated by Leenock and then Life. Even if there is no shame in losing to those two, it shows that his ZvZ is beatable, a flaw that Golden could take advantage of. Golden offered some solid ZvZ on his way to qualification and the games will be tight.
About advancing
Even if his PvZ was proved beatable by Sen during BWC, HerO is a logical favorite for this first group. Liquid’s Protoss will use his momentum to make it through and as the finals are held in January, it gives him quite some times to practice his champagne (j'aurais mis golden champagne shower perso) shower. To accompany him to the round of 16, Symbol looks like a fairly good bet. May’s runner up will have a tough way through since the group is filled with Korean talents, including aLive who will fight for his honor.
Can't wait to see the thing in action, you set the bar high with the first one, but I think you can still do this tournament better than Chapter One, especially on the English side of things.
Good luck, I'll be watching most of it for sure, hopefully many will join me on the journey.
I don't really see any situation where hero/symbol don't advance, unless alive decides he's going to return to his form at the start of his time on fnatic he and golden look like dead meat against either of them, maybe ZvZ can go truly insane in golden's favour and alive 2 raxes symbol to death but otherwise they look doomed.
I'm gonna go with aLive/Symbol on this one. Despite herO's big win at dreamhack i still believe aLive can win due to his amazing spirit,he also has a very dynamic style whereas Taeja's more ''calm'' and i think that can make herO's fall.
For Symbol/Golden i'm gonna say symbol because he's motherfucking symbol, but golden seemed to be one of the player who wanted the most to qualify for Iron Squid (cf : his twitter ),i wish him the best.
aslo congratulation on the new musical themes, they are very nice, especially herO's one.
my favourite tourney returns, along with moar sick player themes ^^
man the next 5 days will be the most stacked days of SC2 in its history since release: IronSquid2, WCG finals, IPL5, GSL World Championship, Code S semis + finals

Live cast from replays, if you look at the player list it's obvious why you can't get all of those players to plan their schedules around this one tournament.
Awesome! Iron Squid is stuck in my mind as the last great Terran tournament. On top of that, I really like the format of a longer tournament over a weekend long rush. Even if it is online.
HerO - aLive Symbol - Golden winners' match losers' match final match
hmm, sounds better indeed. Will just need to ask the starting maps to Kaoru as he doesn't share maps or result before broadcast to avoid any risk of results leaking!
Very excited for this one. Obviously HerO and Symbol are the favorites but alive and Golden can certainly surprise here. Especially alive can beat most players on a good day.

Yeah, I'm blind and completely missed the line below the start time. It's that black text on white background, it's so low contrast...
Just saw this on reddit, i was already pumped as fuck for iron squid 2 but those stats just blew my mind about the player pool.
- The winners of 13 of all 17 GSL championships, including every champion this year, and 3 of 4 runners-up. - Every MLG champion of the year and every runner-up. - Every Dreamhack champion of the year. - 5 of the past 6 IEM champions. - Both ESWC champions. - Both Blizzcon champions. - Both RSL champions. - The past two IPL champions. - The reigning NASL champion. - The Battle.net World Champion. - Not forgetting the seven players that earned the most money.
I think there's plenty more potential in PvZ in HotS. I really like the idea of swarm hosts generating more "battlefields", and I also like the pressure they bring, it forces the opponent to move, and not just to wait for a deathball. Infestor play is still seems a bit overwhelming, but we know it is being adressed, so no problem there.
I can't say much from the Ps perspective because White-Ra didn't play too well, but I definetly like this new Zerg. And we didnt even see Vipers - whether they are important units in PvZ or not.

I watched Idras Stream the other day and Vipers are amazing. At least if they are used by Idra! This was very entertaining and they are pretty strong in my opinion.

It was incredible because normally in WoL that nexus would have been canceled due to the fact of the non-existant mothership core. But Whitera was right on top of making sure he had that in position (and remember how slow it is, though not as much as before.)
Further, I found it impressive with the positioning, building the pylon just in time so that he defend the cannon from the ling surround which had just barely been completed.

To be fair, having beta infrastructure for an underfeatured service that shipped with a product released two years ago is... bad. Not "bad" as in "something that could use improvement", rather bad as in "who are the sad schmucks behind this? I can only suppose they are so ashamed of themselves as to fall into depression and quit their jobs, which is why these things aren't quite fixed yet."

The tickets should soon be sold if I understood well. The location will be the Palais des Congrès:
There should be three types of tickets: - 35€: basic entry - 60€~: includes entry + t-shirt + In Uchronia album - 90€~: "Golden square" seating (front row probably)
Official info should come soon, this is just a heads up!
Holy hell, Le Palais des Congrès for a starcraft 2 event is pretty big news lol This thing is BIG and one of the main place for entertainement events in France.

aLive vs JYP up and down matches this season on Cloud Kingdom. Both players max out and JYP sends like 3 or 4 zealots around the map to aLive's 3rd. aLive doesnt lift the base and loses his OC to the 3 zealots. then he engages the maxed protoss and loses. has no econ to fall back on. aLive played reallllllly bad that day and came in last in his group
same spawning positions as last game should be free for the group since it was the first match

Wow, that was one horrible attack by Alive. Drop 3 hellions in main, kill a sentry, run from a sentry and a stalker to meet up with your marines on the low ground and damage a nexus while your opponent warps in new units.
I didn't see hero vs stephano series 1 @ bwc, did anyone see it? Is what day9 is saying true that he was missing pylons and probes? I ask that because Stephano just has hero's number most of the times and usually is not about mechanics.

He was definitely on tilt in that first series. Did stargate damage, lost third base to counterattack, missing forcefields, microing poorly, etc. Don't remember the probe thing though.

Sorry for late answer! Symbol was going for infestor, banking up 1500 gas. He then started 10 infestors when Pathogen Glands was 29/80, which makes them come out 1-2 sec to early. He proceeds to lose to a timing push by HerO.

Symbol started his infestors 1 second too early, so the 10 he was making all popped out JUST before Pathogen Glands finished leaving them all without enough energy to fungal. Hero then used this to his advantage to push in and kill the 4th, and from there the game (Hero's push would have easily been held off/back if the fungals were available)

In the first game of HerO vs Symbol, the latter had Pathogen Glands in production, then queued up 10 Infestors at once. Day9 instantly spotted that these would finish 2 seconds before the upgrade and thus without the extra energy. This lead to HerO winning easily.

Yes, it was aLive clumping up all his vikings. It's comparable to running 20 lings into banelings in early ZvZ, or missing forcefields for protoss.
Had he not clumped those, he would've won that engagement.
he clumped 5 vikings out of 12 or so - this is not avoidable in a not completely perfect game, still he had like 10 corrupters left over, not like he would have taken that engage
i saw golden make 3 times more mistakes in this game

He would've taken it for sure, there were 50 marines as well and not enough fungals for both unless alive doesn't have medivacs and gets caught out of position. I know zerg is crazy op and everything all of a sudden so terrans can't lose because they fucked up, but if it was someone like Polt controlling that army the end result would be way different

Usually when people say it's a good map for terran, it's regarding standard marine/tank/medivac play. As a zerg, it's very hard to take a 4th base against drops. Mech can't drop, so it's not as bad.
On November 29 2012 08:53 stuchiu wrote: And that's why corruption sucks.
This had nothing to do with Corruption. It was Golden not scouting Alive's army composition. He just blindly build a few broodlords and mass corruptor. Which is the correct way to play against the normal composition of mass tank-viking with rather few thors. But Alive went for mass Thor and against that you actually need Mass broodlord. Golden gonna win though, Alive couldn't kill him in time.

Exactly, Thor dont do shit to broodlords... In fact they are a big massive robot of destruction and they usually cant even keep an overlord from freely wandering around all my base when im doing mech.

come on man, it's free hd, good players, good format and good casters (even though day9 was confusing every possible name, constantly calling golden quantic and alive light)
Keeping all those Thors stuck in his natural was a bad move there. Need them all to be firing on the brood lords and they work well, like the previous engagement. Getting them stuck behind each other is a disaster though, since Broods don't suffer the same in the air.

Wow. You are angry because the little text says some French names for the unit instead of the English ones? Do you really not know the English names for the units and structures? Or are you offended by the French language? I don't understand your problem.

Your reaction seems a tad excessive to me, I'll give the information to the production crew though.
Youre right, just in a bad mode and this shouldnt bother me. I guess im just fed up with people trying to forcefully engage their moronic language on other people. Its plain disrecpectfull.
This is 2012, soon to be 2013.. English should be good for INTERNATIONAL events.

Or is it...
This tournament has the strongest player pool I've ever seen. It has the winners of 13 of all 17 GSL championships, including every champion this year, and 3 of 4 runners-up. It has every MLG champion of the year and every runner-up. It has every Dreamhack champion of the year. It has 5 of the past 6 IEM champions. It has both ESWC champions. Both Blizzcon champions. Both RSL champions. The past two IPL champions. The reigning NASL champion. The Battle.net World Champion.
There are the seven players who earned the most money, in order : 1 - MC 2 - Mvp 3 - Nestea 4 - Stephano 5 - DRG 6 - MMA 7 - MKP

You sound irrationally butt-frustrated with french for some reason, are you like this with other languages too? Because I hope not
No other people then the french try to engage you in their moronic language so I dont have this problem with other languages.
Tbh I just think nobody paid attention to the client as we didn't expect people to focus on the units' names... I don't think we're trying to impose anything to anybody, maybe we should go for a ppv format so that you actually pay for your French classes

yeah, I kinda get that dubbing might seem really off when you're not used to it, personally I prefer stuff in the original language (with nicely done subs of course, as I don't understand any japanese but I do love my animes ) but that's just me.
Grr, stupid family is still in town so I wont have time to watch this until next week . Oh well, guess I'll just do what I do for GSL and stick my head in the sand until i finish it.
Statistics, man. Although most of us guessed it without all that fancy mathematics. Love your work though really makes this threads more fun to follow.
It seems to me that perhaps there are too many "FashionSquid" tickets. I understand they hope people pay a little extra to help out the tournament but 60€ is actually pretty expensive. Or maybe I'm poor.
Aaanyway, if you're planning on attending the live event I suggest you get your tickets fast!

But I think except that Iron Squid is going really well so far, good job!

Great 1st show, a lot of improvement since last year.
The only thing to improve must be the communication with the english stream, tell them to run the IronSquid themes (which are awesome), the asus advertisement etc...
Gotta be honest, I never experienced such a smooth super high quality free stream. Absolutely awesome. If this was a restaurant, I would personally commend the cook.
