The World e-Sports Masters 2012 will be the first edition of the seven years old franchise to feature a StarCraft II tournament, which replace Warcraft III as official RTS game. It will last three days, and will be held in Hangzhou, China on 25-28 October.
Kim 'SaSe' Hammar Park 'JYP' Jin Young Han 'aLive' Lee Seok Lee 'MarineKing' Jung Hoon Moon 'MMA' Sung Won Jung 'MVP' Jong Hyun Lee 'Leenock' Dong Nyoung Lim 'NesTea' Jae Duk
This one has an excellent prizepool and is also pretty well known for me because it was already happening back in WC3.
With MMA, Mvp and MKP all here, there will be a lot of exciting games. Too bad though, that they didn't invite one newcomer such as Taeja, Life or Sun.
wow, crazy prizepool for a fairly meh lineup........sase, mma and especially nestea doesnt belong in a tourny with this prizepool, hope they surprise some
There will be a press conference, bracket picking ceremony, and a welcome dinner on the first day 24 October from 1700 - 2100.
From 25 October to 28 October, the schedule is as follow.
Format of WEM 2012
Starcraft 2 - Round of 8 brackets will be chosen at random. Tournament will follow a double elimination best of 3 format, with the grand finals being a best of 5. The player coming from the winner bracket will start off with a 1:0 lead in the grand finals.
LoL - Round of 8 brackets will be chosen at random. Tournament will follow a double elimination best of 1 format, with the grand finals being a best of 3. The player coming from the winner bracket will start off with a 1:0 lead in the grand finals.

If you go to this link ( http://s.163.com/12/1022/11/8EDSTVL900314D0E_2.html ), you'll see a Chinese website. The stream is the thing below the WEM banner and above the schedule. The link you see below the stream is the back up stream. Think it's a Chinese stream.
Also, the reason there are no Chinese players is because WEM 2012 clashes with the finals of WCG China 2012.
On October 20 2012 03:30 covetousrat wrote: Hmm Sase JYP? How did they get invited over players like MC, Squirtle, Creator, Seed and probably Parting?
Because not EVERY tournament is about bringing the absolutely tip top players in the world. If this was the case, we would just have Code S players plus a couple EU players being invited to every tournament.
Also, Sase is a draw in China due to his WCS background. Not sure about JYP.
Alright I've got the brackets here, but I have no idea how to upload brackets onto Liquipedia lol.
Here are the round of 8 brackets.
Opening ceremony at 12pm GMT +8 Nestea vs Mvp (25 October 1pm GMT+8) Leenock vs MMA (25 October 2pm GMT+8) MarineKing vs Alive (25 October 3pm GMT+8) JYP vs Sase (25 October 4pm GMT+8)

Haha probably because there are no known English streams for this. Hard to get hype for a tournament if it's only streamed in a language most TL people might not understand (Chinese).
Edit: The planned time for the matches have been updated onto the site with the brackets in my previous post Times listed is according to Beijing time (GMT +8)
Seems like a good tournament, has some big names around which I did not expect to see, I thought they would be practicing for GSTL or other tournaments.
For anyone who's interested in learning more about this tournaments history, Thorin just wrote a great retrospective summary of the WEG/WEM events thus far: http://www.aceresport.com/uk/content/210.htm.
They weren't joking about the dinner reception eh Looks pretty nice.
Anyway, for those who are interested, this is the Chinese stream (Playing some random onepiece trailer thing). The link below the stream is a link to the back up stream.
Opening ceremony starts approx. 2 hours time, and Nestea vs Mvp should start approx. 3 hours time. I'm going to cut my hair and might not be home then, so we'll see how it goes. Edit: Or maybe I won't be cutting my hair.

Even if he wasn't sure, he knew he couldn't stay on 1 base for that long.
that the f is with this tournament. no stream in the side bar linked, no hype threads or anything... easily missed. in fact, the only way to not miss it is to go to page 3 of this thread. even the OP has no link.

Leenock forgets baneling speed but MMA still doesnt micro against slow banes at his 3rd... wat I do really enjoy Leenock's burrowed baneling play, though. it's always nice to see
Thank you Nestea for accepting this interview with s.163.com and MarsTV. Can you tell us how you feel after winning?
Ah I'm very happy. I usually lose more than I win in my previous tournament games against Mvp. Even though the games were really difficult, I am still very happy to have won.
You came back to defeat Mvp 2:1. Why did you think you were able to win?
I practised with Mvp previously, we know each other quite well, and I also really understood Mvp's strategies, and so I prepared in a way to counter him, and add to that a bit a luck, and I was able to win.
You frequently used your queens to spread creep to limit Mvp. Have you invented a whole new strategy?
The purpose of the queens is to limit Mvp's expanding and taking of the map. Perhaps it's the first time Mvp has seen such a style, and as a result he wasn't able to react properly.
It's been some time since you've appeared at offline tournaments, and the fans are very worried about your condition. How are you now? What percentage of your peak have you managed to recover to?
About 60-70% or so I guess. This is my first overseas tournament after my rest, and it feels like my hands and body hasn't yet adjusted properly, and I'd still need some time to resume practise.
Life, a Zerg player, defeated Mvp at the GSL finals. What's your assessment on the current balance of Zerg?
The difference between the balance of Zerg and Terran is actually not big, and both races are strong in their own ways, and it still depends largely on the players and the strategies.
Have you tried Heart of the Swarm?
I've played about 2-3 times I guess. Not too much.
Finally, can you say something to the Chinese fans?
This is my first time in China, and I am very thankful for the support of the Chinese fans, and I will continue working hard and practising to repay the fans in China. Hope everyone will continue looking forward to my performances. Thank you.

Yup. He had creep to strengthen his contain after he forced a lift of natural from Mvp. Mvp couldn't (didn't try) to break out until it was too late.

That's right and he combined this with a roach/ling/bane contain. MVP predicted the roach/ling/bane attack but it didn't matter as Nestea kept him locked in his base for so long. He got up to broods while MVP had like 1/1 marines at the end of the game...stomp

Mvp lost to that newish roach/nydus/queen attack, which sorta hard counters Mvp's two different mech openings (blue flame/halion banshee). Nestea transitioned out of it well in all the games, and played well from the advantage he had.
I would say Nestea helped Mvp practice last week a lot and blind countered him a bit. Nestea looked good tho.

MMA is really strong, and I'm very honoured to be able to defeat such an opponent. But this is just the first game, and I'm going to try my hardest in the upcoming games to get to the WEM finals.
Talking about winning the championship, who do you think will be your greatest rival on your way to winning it?
MarineKing. My winning rate has never been high against MarineKing, and if he also makes it to the finals, I think he'll be my greatest opponent.
Has there been any changes ever since winning at MLG?
I feel like I haven't changed much, but winning MLG allowed the fans to know about me, and so I'm still very happy about it.
In the games against MMA, your usage of the burrowed banelings was amazing. Why are you able to use them so well?
I started using banelings ever since Starcraft 2 started. I'm really familiar with them and it feels really easy and comfortable for me to use them. Seems like that's it (laughs).
As the main Zerg of FXO, do you have any expectations for this season's GSTL?
In the history of GSTL, there hasn't been any team which has won two consecutive championships yet. And FXO, as defending champions, we will try our best to win the championship, and be the first team to defend the title and win two consecutive championships.
As someone who managed to reach top 8 last season, do you have any expectations for GSL season 5? You know, the top 4 players get to go to Las Vegas.
Haha, I've never won GSL before, and I really want to know how it feels to win a GSL championship trophy! In this new season of GSL, I will definitely try my best in preparing, and win the GSL championship! I'm really hoping to win.
We saw you dancing Gangnam Style after winning MLG. If you manage to win this time, will you still dance it?
(laughs) If I win, I will definitely dance, and I'll dance for a longer duration than MLG.
Finally, can you say something to the Chinese fans?
I am thankful for the support of the Chinese fans. This is my first time coming to China, and everything is just so fresh to me. I will also try my best to perform well, and let everyone see the best of me.

Heh, it wasn't like that yesterday and this morning. Maybe there was some changes in how players drop to the loser's bracket. Bracket also shows that that winner of Mvp/aLive will play Nestea. So it is possible we get a Mvp/Nestea rematch really soon.

0.o so strange. I wonder if the Chinese site made a mistake. It states loser's bracket first match is Mvp vs aLive. And the other match is MMA SaSe. Or maybe that's the way they do double elimination there :S
I'm probably wrong just saw in the thread yesterday they would play today, nothing official.

Sucha weird way to do it 0.o I don't want to see Mvp Nestea rematch so soon

Yeah, it seems like this format setup for possible round 1 rematches very soon.

He tends to go mutas quite a bit in ZvP
Also he can do some sick 3 base aggression, using roach/ling/bling and burrow to the max. He got many different styles, should be fun!
Hmm well November will be a HUGE month for the state of SC2 with all the big tourneys coming up.. All I know is that SC2 streams are really dying (sort of )

Moment of truth coming up in lb r2, will one of the high tier terrans in this tournament be able to win a single non-mirror game vs mediocre z/p's? Stay tuned.

Wouldn't call Alive high-tier anymore. Nestea's play against MVP certainly hasn't been mediocre thus far either. Barely lost to Leenock and came back to flatten MVP hardcore yesterday. Whether he'll keep it up remains to be seen.
Why in the world would you give away your warp prism attack by attacking a useless overlord on the 4th.. i don't think leenock had anything in the main.
This was scheduled to be played a couple hours ago, yet the stream is nowhere to be found and only one I can is showing LoL. What am I missing, when does the SC2 tournament continue?

It's done for today, resumes tomorrow at 14:00 KST
Man, frustrating being an mkp fan sometimes. He just watched alive proxy mvp like every game yesterday! Today he plays alive and doesn't freaking scout! It's like mkp never learns by watching his opponents previous games. He should have scouted like mad against alive cheese.
Every time MKP loses to proxy cheese, I hold out hope, ok he's going to learn to scout now. Been waiting 2 years for that lesson to kick in.

Also there's only 4 total matches left.. are they really extending this another day?
I think the Chinese streams work better. Either the fengyunzhibo one that the guy after you listed or this one http://s.163.com/12/0925/18/8C95GRVV00314IL3.html, but you have to download and install a plug-in for this one.
wow gratz JYP, even if he loses he still wins $8000 I believe, i hope EG spam some of there social media tomorrow to get a few more people watching the finals.

Hmm won't that be a problem for WCS Worlds? Like it was for WCS Asia.
I can finally post in this thread. Nestea beating MVP was amazing but the ways he lost to Leenock and Sase disappointed me immensely and were both great examples of why he has fallen so far. He screws up early game attacks that should be auto-wins and gets out multi-tasked heavily. Terrans doing so poorly at this tournament has been strange I mainly blame the brackets though. I don't think MVP would have lost to anyone in the first round besides Nestea. Though I guess he lost to Alive but those games were strange and easily could have turned out differently if played on a different day. MMA was always going to lose to Leenock and just impressive that he took a game considering his recent play. I've always been a fan of JYP and I hope this tournament finally gets him the attention I think he's deserved for a long time. Towards the end of last year I thought he was the best PvZ in the world. He definitely had the best record but somehow didn't get very much attention for it.

Same thing i was thinking $4000 difference. Not bad considering it was a weekend thing and not that many players.
On October 28 2012 15:05 illsick wrote: i missed the games, were they any good? and how was the crowd?
Games weren't that good. G1 was on cloud kingdom, cannon-rush followed up by a hydra nydus in the main and JYP desperately trying to defend. G2 was on daybreak, leenock doing a big roach-ling infestor attack as JYP tried to defend his 3 bases until he could get out collosi but he died before that.

mm true, but the reason Ro32 Code S pays out so much is because it's actually quite a feat just to make it in! You have to get into Code A through prelims which is tough, then you either have to win Code A Ro24 or win in the up/downs, which is tougher. The exception being the occasional international seeds they give out, that is truly free money for losing (lookin at you Idra/Sen/Thorzain).
But back to this tournament, Leenock wins $12k for winning 3 bo3s and 1 bo5! That's more money than 1st place at the smaller IEMs, Dreamhacks, and MLGs, so called premier tournaments.

this tournament is well known in war3,
I think he means that their wasn't that much (if any) exposure for foreigners to get aware of the event, and that's a shame caus the line-up was pretty badass. But if this was a succes (hope it was!) then hopefully next time more people will be aware of it. The invites and prizepool could stay the same (in terms of quality) and it would still be a pretty bad as event.
Alas enough blabbering, gratz to Leenock, i look forward to (hopefully) more events. Makes me really happy to see big Chinese events like this ^__^
