8 plus the WCS Canada

so if Thorzain wins this, 4 out of 8 players on the finals will be EG players?
Will they try to prevent team kills?

No. If Thorzain wins vs. Ret, he plays immediately against Demuslim in the round of 16. Winner makes it to the 8-man final. Even now, none of the players are currently in the finals. They haven't done the playoffs for that yet.

Edit. If Thorzain wins, he will play Puzzle. If Ret wins, he will play Demuslim. Clarification due to them sending people on by seeding, as opposed to bracket.

Not sure about Thorzain playing Ret (if he wins). I may be wrong but I think on stream they said they would reseed the wild card winners for the next round, in which case if Thorzain wins, he is still bottom seed so he would play Puzzle?

Really disappointed that the NASL Toronto finals is going to be final 8 instead of final 16. How are they gonna stretch out an 8 player tournament over 2 days? Sounds like there's gonna be a lot of snore time.

This is to be the first premier tournament to be held in my hometown and I was really looking foward to seeing as many of the top international stars compete live in person. Now that number is gonna be cut in half. What if Stephano, MC, DeMuslim, Puma, etc. are knocked out of the tournament at the Round of 16? Then they won't be coming to Toronto and I and all the other Canadian fans like myself won't be seeing them.

The WCS qualifiers is a sorry substitute for not having the NASL top 16. Promoting local players is great and it's nice that they'll get to play at a big event, but watching unknown semi-professional players just isn't as exciting to watch as watching players you already know and love.

The only people I recognize from the Canadian qualifiers page on liquipedia are Ryze and Attero. I assume HuK and TT1 are going to be competing as well whether or not they make it to the top 8 in the NASL? Any word about whether other Canadian pros will be showing up? (Kiwikaki, Slush, Drewbie, dde, Scarlett(!), Desrow, Stalife)

Yeah, see edit above. Thorzain will play Ret today, and if he wins, he plays the highest seed (Puzzle). The highest seed who wins today will play the lowest seed (Demuslim), so Ret/Strelok/Beasty/Galaxy in that order whoever wins gets to play Demuslim. The 2nd one to win on that list, or perhaps on a longer list, plays Stephano.

Agreed, I am also very upset about this change in format. The regular season seems all the more meaningless. You can get first place in the entire league and you still need to win another BO5 to make it to the offline event. Last season top 2 in your group guaranteed you a spot at the offline finals, which is far simpler a format and far better for the players. Overall very disappointed with this change by NASL.

Also, I question whether or not the players are fully aware of this change in format. From watching recent interviews with HuK and him talking about his upcoming tournaments, he lists NASL as if he thinks he's already at the offline finals, when in reality he still needs to win a likely difficult BO5 to make it there.

I agree, I would have loved to see a top 16 in the finals, nicer bracket without being too big, especially since it is single elimination (I assume it still is?). And rewards the top 8 players + the next 8 that could work their way through the wildcard. The good thing is that bo5s will give us a bit more content, but 8 players over 2 days seems stretched.

Yes, I forgot that it's single elimination. That makes the 8 man format all the more silly.

It does seem the format has changed more than people expected, no direct seeding into the finals, it's more like pool play into brackets and winning your pool just allows you to skip a round.

I thought that at first too but the RO8 is BO5 and everything after that is BO7. I seem to remember the first three Shoutcraft Invitational's had almost the same format (except only the finals were BO7) and that fitted into 2 days nicely. I believe they started around late morning/midday and finished late (midnight/1am or there abouts). That coupled with the fact that WCS Canadian qualifiers are running simultaneously should mean they're sorted for content.

While the RO8 is considered the 'Finals' the top 16 receive a prize fund. Coming top in your league (and thus making it to the RO16) guarantees you prize money, not to mention the potential $1200 to be made in the season. I'd hardly call that pointless.

You guys are also forgetting that, in Toronto we will also have:

- CSL Canadian Championship (4 Canadian universities playing)
- NASL Tribes Grand Finals
- Blizzard Canadian Championship (32 player double elim tournament)
- NASL Grand Finals

This is a LOT of content to fit into two days, we will be broadcasting about 20 hours of content per stream (2-3 streams) over the weekend. There will definitely be no shortage of action!

With just two days, bringing 16 players was not feasible for what we're trying to accomplish. Furthermore, we made a decision to pay for 100% of the travel cost of the players, as opposed to just giving them a stipend like we did in Season 1 and Season 2, so it was a tradeoff.

We felt it would be better to eliminate the cost from teams entirely, but bring less players -- that way it rewards them even more for making it this far.

Thank you for the early update.

My heart wants Lowely, but if Ryung is on his GSL form then I fear he should have it fairly easily

There will be no shortage of action, but the overall quality of that action will be greatly diminished by only having the 8 NASL players there. CSL and WCS are great and all, but the quality of play will be nowhere near that of the NASL RO16 and onward. Also, there's far less star players in the CSL and WCS than the NASL. I'd really hate to not see MC, Stephano, etc. at the finals because of this format change.

Also, with an 8 man single elimination tournament, even in spite of BO5, the amount of content at the "NASL S3 Fianls" that will actually be from the NASL tournament seems surprisingly low.
