This Saturday and Sunday I will be playing a BO31 against KiWiKaKi (not a BO31 each day) but half and half. Starting 6pmEST each day
Why?
a few days ago KiWiKaKi messaged me on skype and the conversation went something like this:
K: hey dood I stream soon C: sick dood K: I was thinking kiwi stream opening, kiwikaki vs catz bo31 showmatch, thoughts? C: ok lets do it K: how much money? C: you want to bet? K: obviously... C: 100$ bet K: more than that... more views, more money... C: 300$? K: 500$ C: fine
and a 1k prizepool was created for the showmatch, did I get hustled? very likely. KiWiKaKi has always been one of the hardest protosses to beat for me. But I intend to win, if not get a lot of, -really expensive- experience and practice. Where?
Should be crazy, hope neither of them tilt at the beginning though, could be a very sad frustrating 16 game losing streak for either of them if they tilted just right. Should be awesome to watch, hope it goes down to the last game.

Well, when you're on a freeroll, you can permit yourself to lay better odds. Even if he loses, he will still come out ahead with all the profit coming from his stream. But I honestly don't think he'll win 33% of the time to make it profitable :|
If this series happens to be fun and all, which will undoubtably be the case, there will be wins from both players right? and something like 20-or-so minute games? let's say 15min, so 4 games in an hour. In a somewhat close ft31, that would be what.. 24 games at least? That's (an estimated) 6 hours.

God some of it is just so great in retrospect. It's hilarious too that that is the first and last time I've heard of Smuft.
I wonder if there is anyone who would be willing to put that much nowadays. Maybe Idra v. Huk in their most hated days, but everyone in SC2 is just so nice to each other. CatZ you need to start burning bridges with Kiwi if you want me to watch this.

Honestly I'm mostly hoping for Desert Oasis. I'm not saying it was a balanced map, but I loved it. Kulas was pretty fun as well.

500$ is not that much for them so i doubt they wouldn't pay up, and even if they didn't I'd still watch anyways so really doesn't matter.

when i see these two it makes me think our NA GM representatives are still code A material, except for late game play. However, there's no denying how entertaining these two are, it's like red vs. blue the sc2 version.
seems like catz loses every game by going roach hyrda vs stalker sentry colosus. i don't understand. he should at least once try a baneling bust or 2 base roach all in vs FFE.

Mass mutaling is pretty damn good too vs. Protoss, if you can harrass enough. Although Kiwi's blink stalkers are insanely good...
CatZ is being amazingly annoying with the baneling drops, although they're not being that effective imo... Kiwi's got great reaction time.

what kills catz imo is kiwi's ridiculous reaction time (defending drops etc...), force fields rendering half the zerg army useless, and awesome unit control. he kills so much shit without losing much most of the time. must be frustrating as fuck for catz.

Why cant it be both. Yes they get some money out of it. But there was definitely so friendly competition to it as well. And whats money for them is entertainment for us so I don't see how you can say how you can't say it wasn't at least partly for entertainment.

No it's not the same. Catz could win 33% of the games while winning non of the best of 31s.
If they played 10 best of 31 matches and the score was the same every time, that would mean that Kiwi won all ten matchups. Your odds of 2-1 would be way off then. Catz would actually have to win a third of the matchups for your odds to correct.
Your odds were given on the entire matchup not the individual games. It is a HUGE difference.

Come on now... There is no way you think that's serious statistics... The odds of Catz winning 16 in a row (I'm assuming you mean he's capable of winning 1 out of 3, not 1 out of 2 like you said) is: 1.977E-8. That's like .000002% or something. That's not very high.
Not sure if this helps to clarify things but I think the argument is winning a game /= winning a series.
Let's assume that Catz's probability of winning a game is 1/3. So if you offered 2:1 odds for those that bet on Catz, you'll break even. Let's use a BO3 as an example.

That reasoning looks correct. I think CatZ would play better in a Bo3 though. Some of the games in this series he seemed to throw because of sloppy cheesing and other stuff he wouldn't try in a Bo3.

Betting $50 on Catz: $100*.26 + ($50*.74) = ($11).
A good handicap gets the EV's as close to zero as possible.
A longer series reduces variance and increases the likelihood Kiwi wins which makes a 2:1 line even worse every time the series is extended. And 31 is a long ass series. You can see this intuitively because although he only has a 26% to win a Bo3, he has a 33% chance of winning a Bo1 (obviously). The longer it is the more skewed it gets.

Yeah, you are correct. I did a bit of binomial analysis of winrate graphically a while ago, but I never went up to Best of 31.

This made me laugh lol, I think earlier on somebody linked to Fayth's poker profile and he'd made like a 60k dollar payout at some tournament, and doubtless makes some from just online poker. I'd been interested to try it but always neglected to as I'm pretty terrible at maths, but now I may just give it a go
