The idea of TB and HD casting at the same time sounds absolutely terrible. Even djWheat has no idea, he's just an entertaining caster alongside someone like Day9.

HD is better than 99% of the playerbase, mid masters level player. Stop acting like he has absolutely no idea how to play. He isn't anywhere near Artosis(The caster by who all others shall be judged), but could beat the majority of the people who post on TL. PainUser is a high level player, while Totalbiscuit and DjWheat will probably be the play by play guys.

He's talking about understanding starcraft at the highest level of play. which HD does not. Being mid masters just means you have played some RTS before and have decent general game sense. The only caster listed for this who knows how to read the decisions of the players in this tournament will be painuser. HD is fine at being some white noise in the background while I'm trying to watch a game. But don't try to pass him for any type of analyst at the professional level...

My point is to place HD at the analysis level of TB or DJwheat is pretty unfair to him. And I did say he isn't anywhere near Artosis, but since IGN is looking to get people who are probably going to at the silver to diamond level mostly he probably is able to provide a lot more analysis than they could on their own, while also having the perk of his huge YouTube subscriber base.

Archangel, Tastosis are quite possibly the most respected casting team in the community BECAUSE they can provide analysis. Having relatively high level players participating in the casting for the league can only help. You can even find a lot of love for Tastosis outside of TL, such as on the battle.net forums.

I actually don't see that criticism of Day9, either. I think of him as being a yell-a-lot kind of guy in tournament casting.

No, Artosis provides analysis, Tasteless repeats what Artosis says 75% time and says stupid things other 25% and is not that good at play by play stuff. What he is good is jokes and has good chemistry with artosis.

Give someone like artosis to TB and you get a much better casting Archon (if they also develop some chemistry) as TB is superior to Tasteless in almost all ways.
This is why I'm not a big fan of TB or HD. They simply don't know what they are talking about when it comes to the highest levels of play. Sure, they could be entertaining, but if they don't know anything about the game then what do you expect to get out of it?

I expect to get entertainment. Since TB is awesome at that I will surely get that.

On the other hand Tasteless was complete opposite when he was casting alone during world championship.

Give me a break, that was never during the actual games. I don't think TB would do much better if he ONLY casted with a partner. You are really putting too much into those two days and letting your Tasteless hate take over your arguments. Like, when did Tasteless ever say he rarely plays SC2?

Oh come on, now you are making excuses for him. A moment ago you all were claiming he was casting alone during BW and he is a great solo caster LOL. Decide already?!
I have no tasteless hate, I just do not consider him such a great caster as others do. He said he does not play much (or at all) during first 3 seasons and there was talk on TL about it here and there and I do not remember him ever saying he started playing more or talking about it much (except saying he will steal a build to play over the weekend).
And yes it was during games. Tasteless was casting alone first part of each game before artosis would arrive and he was doing alone introductions for players and MU and maps. It was all pretty bad as normally artosis does all this and tasteless repeats after him like a parrot.

Pay more attention to this in the next GSL, it is so apparent I do not understand how more people did not notice (it must be the superman/kent thing)

By the way, Tasteless is high masters on his account. I sat behind him when I was in Korea and watch him play. Just so you know.
Be the change you wish to see in the world ^-^V //

Mhm. It's why I've shied away from posting. I see the argument of b.net rank being used to discredit TB then ignored when it's mentioned that HD is masters.

Very excited to see many big time leagues receive so much viewer support from the casual viewer. Seeing tens of thousands on streams will definitely turn some heads from sponsors. I can't wait to have so many tournaments to support! Bring 'em on.

Interesting that the owner of FOX is on board for this, or at least his company is. This might have interesting news for ESPORTS in the long run.

Saying Rupert Murdoch is going to directly affect eSports is like saying he chooses the songs on Glee. Correct, IGN is owned by News Corporation which is owned by Rupert Murdoch, but this is an IGN initiative, built by people who are passionate about gaming for people who are passionate about gaming.

Oh I definitely agree that HD is infinitely more knowledgeable than TB, I guess the point I was making is that I really think HD fills the same role as TB and wheat, not the artosis, day9 analyst role.

And I just want to make it clear that I really do not dislike HD or wheat or TB at all, in fact I quite enjoy all of them, I really just always feel a bit let down when I'm watching such a high level match and the person talking pretty obviously doesn't fully understand what is going on in detail. And its usually fine if there is someone there who either is a pro or a former pro to clear it up!
You can think I'm wrong, but that's no reason to quit thinking.

SO it's his fault we didn't get a Queen episode of glee...

Honestly though, why cant all the critics just watch the league before spewing venom about x,y, or z.

Casters with less knowledge of the game can sort of work when you pair them up with someone really knowledgable who can handle the higher level analysis stuff. It's all about striking a balance, too much analysis and you'll alienate the newer casual audience and too much play-by-play and you'll annoy the veterans.

Tastosis works so well because both casters actually have lots of knowledge about the game, incredible chemistry, good humor and exciting play-by-plays. Artosis generally takes the lead on strategic analysis because that's something he genuinely loves to do, Tasteless picks up on some play-by-plays and often does some in-battle and pre-battle analysis or positioning statements that are helpful and insightful as well.

Similarly, I feel DJWheat and Day9 work well together because both casters have knowledge of the game, good chemistry and decent humor. Day9 takes the lead on strategic analysis while DJ Wheat chimes in from time to time and reiterates what he says. DJ Wheat often does some pre-battle analysis and Day9 just genuinely explodes during exciting battles. It's all about the balance.

I think TotalBiscuit might work if you pair him with someone knowledgable like PainUser, or DJ Wheat would work incredibly well if you pair him with PainUser also. But then again, HD will need someone like PainUser too... I think you need more casters to take over the knowledge department, or just rotate and see how it goes, and if it isn't that great than just have PainUser stay while everyone else rotates. DJ Wheat can actually pick up some of the analytical slack as he's fairly knowledgable about the game but I wouldn't place him or TB alone as during that cast you'll annoy the people who don't want the play-by-play as much as the strong analysis or vice versa.

In short, the best casting comes in well balanced pairs.

We choose to do that because of how significantly simpler it is for us to get this event up and running with NA players (in terms of travel, scheduling, lag issues, communication, etc), and since we're based in NA, we are supporting NA eSports to begin with.

Wow eSports is litterally exploding at the moment!

At this rate of growth I wouldn't be surprised if the NA leagues at least over take Korea in the next few years, in SC2 at least... :S

Is anyone else having trouble keeping on top of the amount of content being produced at the moment?

I wish the IPL the best of luck and I look forward to trying to catch some of their games.

I'm not making excuses for Tasteless. I agree with you that during the dead time he was quite horrible, BUT when he does get more comfortable in that role (it must be around 3 years since he solo cast), he is very effective at delivering both entertainment and analysis.

I've watched every season of GSL and I don't once remember him say he doesn't play that much of SC2, so maybe provide the specific game?

anyway this is really getting offtopic so I'm not going to continue this argument anymore.

This is huge; IGN is huge so essentially this SC2 is huge right?

Awesome to see another founding block on the NA scene for the SC2 community; also a small note but every else got a clan tag except for Select who is dignitas hehe

The list of commentators is pretty awesome; interesting to see PainUser doing the iNcontrol and transitioning into some casting based gigs! There will certainly be a lot of entertainment with those casters

Travel?...wait are the games being played in a studio? Is this tournament not strictly online? Is that how the contestants were chosen? By living in a similar area?

Now I am confused, are the players all going to be in the same area when the games are played? Does this mean it will actually be live?

Excellent. IGN is a very big site with a strong connection to potential advertisers and sponsors and experiencing producing content for gamers. It's great for SC and eSports to see so many people throwing their hats into the ring. Plus, ISL is free! So I'll definitely be checking it out.

Ahaha, agreed, I think that line jumped out to anyone who had to deal with the messiness of MLG.

Super excited for this. I'm really looking forward to the hopeful future eSports has in North America!

The most promising thing is that they seem to have gotten the guys from Well Played to help out. Those guys really knew how to add some production value to a tournament(SC2 Reddit Inv).

They timing on this for them is pretty good. People are dying for the next big eSports thing after this hard weekend for the community.
