If you are in the main tournament, I believe they sent e-mail instructions describing how the players will be chosen to face off against each other.

Tournament Information Pack - Players

1. Tournament Outline

1.1 Swiss Placement Tournament

This is a Swiss-system tournament, are modeled after Chess and Magic: The Gathering tournaments. While this style lacks the early drama of elimination tournaments, it guarantees each competitor at least six matches, and provides an excellent means by which to seed players in the final rounds.

A Swiss tournament begins similarly to a Round Robin tournament: each player is randomly paired against one other player. After the first round, however, players are matched with other players of similar record to identify the best players as quickly as possible.

Each player will play six Swiss placement rounds, and each round is a best of three. The first map will be predetermined by Teh Pwn Gaming officials. After the first game, the loser of the previous game picks the next map.

For additional information, Wikipedia has a thorough article on Swiss-system tournaments. Ours is identical to what they call the “Standard Swiss system.”

1.2 How do you know who to play?

Each player will receive a player ID number. Tables of each player’s bnet ID and player ID number will be available at several locations at the tournament. Matches will be posted in the spectator area before they start. Only player ID numbers will be posted, so players will need to use the tables to determine the bnet ID of their opponents. For each match, a Host and a Joiner will be designated. If a player accidentally plays their match against the wrong opponent, both Host and Joiner will receive a loss for that round, so Joiners please make sure that the person inviting you to the game is the person you are supposed to be playing against.

1.3 What to do Between Rounds

After each round, both players must report the result of your match together to the referee seated at the main desk in spectator room. He or she will update the placement standings so you can be accurately placed in the next round.

Once you’ve reported please feel free to hang out in the spectator room where you’ll be able to see who you’re competing against in the next round of play. The Spectating room plays host to our commentators and sponsors, so you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the round with food, entertainment and door prizes.

In the Spectating Room, you’ll also see whether you are the designated Host or Joiner for the next round. If you are a designated Host, you must create the game lobby on the selected map within five minutes before the rounds starts. If you are a designated Joiner, you must add the Host to your friends list and join his lobby.

Sample Placement Round

10:55am - You’re in the Spectating Room, and you see that you (ID number 5) are matched up against ID number 22. You are listed as a Host.
10:56am - You walk to the Players’ Room and sit down. On your desk is a sheet with a table of all the players’ IDs and gamer tags. You see that ID number 22 is PeanutBiscuit.336. You add PeanutBiscuit.336 to your friends list.
10:58am - Looking at the projector screen, you see that the starting map for the next round is Terminus RE, so you get a lobby open for it, and invite PeanutBiscuit to join.
11:01am - PeanutBiscuit arrives, you exchange the gl hfs, and you’re good to go.
11:07am - That was rough. You got proxy 2-raxxed into the ground. As the loser, you get to choose the map for the next game, so you select Crossfire, making sure to pick the GSL version. You’re still the host, so you invite PeanutBiscuit and start the game.
11:40am - You won a macro slugfest! It’s PeanutBiscuit’s turn to choose the map, and he picks Shakuras Plateau. You host the game, making sure to select the Blizzard version, invite Peanut Biscuit, and away you go.
12:02am - You did it! You won the match! The Commentators can’t get over your awesome drop play. Now, you should head out and report your win to the referee seated outside the Players’ Room. Now you make a choice: You can return to your computer and await the next round (but please keep noise and talk low for the sake of the other players) or you can go to the Spectating Room to get food, watch games, and witness the upcoming
announcement of your match-up in the next round, beginning at 12:30.

1.4 Top-Eight Playoff Tournament

At the end of the six Swiss placement rounds, the top eight players are placed into a single-elimination playoff tournament. The rounds of four and eight are best of three, while the finals is a best of five. If time allows, the playoff series may be extended to best of five or best of seven (any such changes would be announced before the start of the round).

Placement and seeding in this tournament is decided by who has the most match wins, then (in the event of a match wins tie) by game losses, then by game wins. In the unlikely event of a tie between players with identical records, a best-of-one runoff matches will be conducted between tied players for playoff spots. Runoff matches will occur during the break between placement matches and the Top-Eight Tournament.

2. Map Pool and Map Selection

The pool of playable maps is as follows:

Xel’Naga Caverns (MLG Version)
Shakuras Plateau (Blizzard Version)
Metalopolis (MLG Version)
ICCUP Sanshorn Mists
The Shattered Temple (Blizzard Version)
Typhon Peaks (Blizzard Version)
Terminus RE (GSL Version)
Crevasse (GSL Version)
Tal’Darim Altar (GSL Version)
Crossfire (GSL Version)

Beyond the first set, the game loser will select the next map.

3. Schedule

Tournament officials may elect to change these timings during the event. If this is the case, a new schedule will be promptly announced and displayed via projector during the rest of the event.

9:00am - Check in begins.

Players may arrive at any time between 9:00am and 11:00am to check in at the front desk, pick up information packets and begin set-up. You are strongly encouraged to arrive before 10:00am, as games will proceed according to schedule without regard to a player’s absence or set-up status:

Game Loss: Failure to create or arrive in the designated game lobby withing five minutes of the start time for the round.

Match Loss: Failure to create or arrive in the designated game lobby within twenty minutes of the start time for the round.

11:00am - Placement Rounds Begin.

Each Placement Round is a best-of-three, and is allotted eighty (80) minutes for completion. There are ninety (90) minutes between the beginning of each round, resulting in a ten minute break between each round. If a round lasts more than 80 minutes, it may be put under referee scrutiny for an additional five minutes and will end in one of the following ways:

1.) One player will win. If that player now has two wins in the match, that player takes the match as normal. If the match is now not over, the match ends in a tie (0.5 points) for both players.

2.) The game does not end during the five minutes scrutiny. If this occurs, the referee will decide whether one player had an overwhelming advantage. If so, that player wins the game and follows the process per (1), above. If the referee feels that either player could reasonably win, the game and match end in a tie (0.5 points).

After you’re done with a round, please remember to report your match result to the Referee seated in the Spectating Room to see the standings and your opponent in the next match. In the event that we fall behind schedule, match-ups and start time will be posted at least five minutes before the beginning of the round.

11:00am - Placement Round One Begins.

8:00pm - One Hour Break

Having reached the break, you will find yourself in one of three positions in the player pool.

If you are in the top eight, congratulations! Sit back, take a break, and the staff will assist you in setting up for the single elimination playoff.

If you are tied to be in the top eight, then you’ll need to play at least one more game. You’ll be playing against whomever you’re tied with in a best-of-one system to decide the playoff bottom seed. The maps and structure of these runoff games will be decided by Teh Pwn officials.

If you’re not in the top eight, then it’s time to choose whether you want to spectate the playoff tournament. If you choose not to spectate and wish to leave, please pack up your computer before 9:00pm, which is the end of the break.

Regardless of your position, the break is the best moment to take a breather, get some food from the spectators’ room, or leave the building to conduct any business you have. The doors to STSS automatically lock after 4:00pm, but our staff will be checking the doors throughout the break to let people back in.

9:00pm - Top Eight Tournament Begins

If you’ve made it into the top eight, you’ll be seeded into the single-elimination playoffs. The same lateness rules apply to the playoffs, so please be on time.

Also, 14/32 have signed up for the Newbie Tournament so there are still spots available!

PM sent!

If anyone else is wondering this same question, you must bring everything required for you to play the game including your tower/laptop, monitor, peripherals, at least a 15ft ethernet cord, and a power strip if you need more than 2 outlets.

Thanks,
