Hey guys, I'm going to be hosting the eighth Open Wolf Cup on 12 September 2010. This tournament is open to all players, regardless of rank/ladder standing. It will take place on the US servers and will have a prize pool that is based off donations. The next tournament will take place on the EU server, so for those EU players, get ready for next Sunday!
If you are interested in taking part in this open tournament, post in this thread with your character name, race, and character code. If you are uncomfortable giving out your code, send me a PM instead. The tournament will have 64 players, but continue to sign up, as in most tournaments about ten or fifteen backups are needed. Keep watching this thread, as it will be updated with important information very regularly. (Note: This is different than most past signups have been; still trying this method out)
IF YOU SIGN UP FOR THIS TOURNAMENT, PLEASE SHOW UP
I have a list of all noshows from the first four OWCs and will continue to keep a list. If a player does not show up three times, they will never be allowed to participate in my tournaments again. So, before contacting me to be put on the list, PLEASE check your schedule and also check the tournament procedures.
Disclaimer regarding signups: If you sign up before someone else, it doesn't guarantee your entry. Some players have reserved spots because they have performed well (defeated well-known players, got first, second place), did artwork (banners, etc), or generally assisted me in some running these tournaments, and have been promised spots. In general, if you've been known to not show up for past tournaments, it's not likely that you'll be skipped over when the selections are made (and you're almost guaranteed to not be selected if you've missed three tournaments without notifying me). Another thing that is key is that I try to get a balanced number of races to avoid P/T-dominated tournaments. Thanks for understanding, and always remember to show up as a backup!
This tournament will take place on the US Servers on Sunday 12 September, at 3:00 PM, EDT (GMT -4).
Prize Pool: $50

No backup list this cup. Thanks. Note: Reserved slots are for former winners, assistants, and those who have earned permanent slots in OWCs.
![[image loading]](http://i56.tinypic.com/x23oqw.jpg)
+ Show Spoiler +Until the semifinals, this tournament will be played in single-elimination rounds. At the semifinals, a best-of-three will be played, and the finals will be a best-of-five set. Many players will probably disagree with this, but it's for the sake of time. This tournament would be FAR too long if the sets were longer for elimination. If a player fails to show up for his match, he will lose by default or be replaced by a backup player.
This tournament will be race-restricting, so once you pick a race, you cannot swap during the tournament. However, if you'd like to change races before the tournament begins, contact me and let me know.
Note about live commentary: Players have the right to refuse casters UNTIL the semifinals/finals. At which time, one caster is required per game for live coverage. Refusing all live casters results in a disqualification.

+ Show Spoiler +Prior to Semifinals: Lost Temple, Metalopolis, Agria Valley, Scrap Station, Delta Quadrant
Semifinals and finals: Lost Temple, Xel'Naga Caverns, Blistering Sands, Metalopolis, Steppes of War

+ Show Spoiler +Essentially, at 2:30 PM EST, ALL players MUST join my IRC channel (see http://thepassingshadow.com/IRC_Chat.html ). Players will use their exact character name as their nickname in IRC (put an underscore afterwards if there are problems with the nick being taken, which can sometimes happen with connection errors). The bracket will be posted so that players can see who their first opponents are. Once in IRC, players should find their opponents and PM them (/msg <username> <message> ) and start sending realID information so that they can add each other as friends. After that, the players should enter a party with one another, do map eliminations to decide which map they will be playing on (see map pool), and then wait for me to tell everyone to begin their first match (will happen at 3 PM EDT). What happens if your opponent does not show up ? PM me in IRC letting me know, and I will either replace your opponent with someone on the waiting list or let you know that you will receive a lucky free win (bye) and will wait for the second round to begin. After I announce in IRC to begin, all 32 parties will play their first game. Casters will begin casting some of these games. Whenever someone finishes their first game, the WINNER will PM me on IRC, specifying both who won and who lost. Once all groups of players have sent me the winners and losers, and EVERY game of the first round is finished, the second bracket will be posted and players will once again PM each other with character information. Once everyone has finished round one, the second round will begin.Once again, the WINNER will PM me on IRC with both the winner and the loser. This will repeat until the semifinals. Semifinals/Finals: Semifinalists will play a best out of three with counter-picks for maps from the Map Pool section. Afterwards, the winner will be announced and everyone will be free to ask for rematches, etcetera etcetera, ask me questions in chat. There may or may not be a third place match. What happens in a dispute over who won the match ? I will add one of the players' realIDs, and look at match history. If there is a further dispute, I will ask for the replay file. Otherwise, sending replays is optional, not required. Last note-- If your opponent disconnects, or claims to, it is up to you to allow him to replay or not.

+ Show Spoiler +As of now, these casters will cast (VERY subject to change): Ipp (with Ragequit,tv), SirazTV, myself, Shigure, drooL, Trump and others who contact me. Casting team is being organised. Please PM me if you are interested. This time, casters will be required to use an overlay. This is being discussed right now. Stay tuned. Casting rules: - Do not stream someone else's stream; that simply lowers quality - Do not list yourself as covering the event if you are not, in fact, covering the event (TL mods may delist your stream if you do this) -There will be absolutely no spectators except official casters who are covering the event (This means no friends, random spectators, lobby joining lurkers, etcetera; they will be kicked. This minimises lag and makes casting much easier for us.) - Do not advertise yourself, ask for donations, or use the event for your own publicity -If you are playing in the finals or semifinals, you must allow one caster to stream your games live; not doing so results in a disqualification + Show Spoiler +Just remember; when Day9 does his dailies, or has huge events like his launch party, do people stream his stream ? Of course not, because it's rude and doesn't make sense. The reason why TeamLiquid allows this event to be listed is so that several casters can cover the event and make this a fun community 'gathering' that a lot of people can be involved in. If you want to cast, simply contact me. Thanks guys.
![[image loading]](http://i52.tinypic.com/nqqscy.jpg)
+ Show Spoiler +If you're interested in sponsoring these cups, please contact me via PM. For starters, I'll have everyone casting this event put an overlay up that displays your name throughout the event. Secondly, your name will be displayed near the top of the tournament thread as well, and any information you'd like to be said will be listed and spoken about in-cast.

Brackets are posted! If you didn't make it in, please show up in IRC to be a backup player. I've never (so far) been able to turn away backups because of noshows. Read the section under backup players to find out how to become a backup player. http://challonge.com/openwolfcup8
Also, on a completely different note, if your name is ILOVETHEPEEN, why ?

Also, I have listed some new rules about commentary for semifinals/finals.

what is it with the BYEs? did all 4 players not show up?
|
got some serious talent in here
|
huk takes dq cos he doesnt want his game to be casted, blames delay. Meanwhile, Morrow playing from the EU on US server is tearing it up.
Just lost all respect I had for huk.
|
I just gained more respect for Huk. Good on him for sticking to his guns.
|
Maybe huk should stop registering for all of these tournaments whose rules he disagrees with
|
huk i <3 you. let us watch you play man. i stayed up to watch you rip some terrans apart and put an end to this tvt crap.
|
if he doesn't want to be casted why play in the tournament
|
u guys are such idiots. Huk has every right to be pissed when so many observers watch and lag the game up. Ok cool it wont be live, but you're messing up his game which is what really matters. The audience has every right to participate as long as they dont interfere with the players which isnt the case here.......
I'm sure basketball players would be super happy if conceited fans wanted to watch the game so up-close that they decided to park their seats in the middle of the court. This provides them with a better view!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHO GIVES IF THE FANS ARE IN THE WAY OF THE PLAYERS, ITS SO CLOSE TO THE COURT WE LOVE IT JUST SO MUCH!!!!1

Actually, he doesn't have any right to be pissed.
From the rules:
"Note about live commentary: Players have the right to refuse casters UNTIL the semifinals/finals. At which time, one caster is required per game for live coverage. Refusing all live casters results in a disqualification."
Don't sign up for tournaments if you disagree with the rules.

lol no one is asking huk to let 14 obs into his game just 2~3. yes i know ideally all professional tournament games should be lag free but thats realistically impossible. also the rules are there for a reason. if huk is allowed to break them and get away with it, shouldnt every other player have that right as well? it may not be perfect but its what we got now and if huk doesnt agree with it, why did he even bother signing up?
|
"Huk has every right to be pissed when so many observers watch and lag the game up."
lol, 3 observers. And morrow is playing from EU -> US and not complaining, just doing it for the fan-service even tho it's probably a big disadvantage for him.
Also why sign up for a tournament if you disagree with the rules, did he expect the rules to be changed for him or something?
Quoting the rules written in this thread; "Note about live commentary: Players have the right to refuse casters UNTIL the semifinals/finals. At which time, one caster is required per game for live coverage. Refusing all live casters results in a disqualification."

Only 1 observer was required. Huk is just being a baby. Morrow is playing from a different continent and you dont see him refusing obs. Guess thats the difference between a professional and a amateur.

Morrow vs. Stalife was so brutal to watch. It just gave me that same "urrrgh" feeling I get when I totally blow whatever nooby plan I had and the other guy just walks up with twice as much stuff at 7:00 or 8:00 and wins.
More constructively: why didn't stalife lift off his bunker, build up marines/hellions behind his CC, and not try to drive guys all the way back to the bunker with his SCVs?
|
It would be nice if these live casts were delayed at least 5 minutes. Right now most casts are only 5-10 seconds behind the action, which makes it just too easy to cheat.

Why are there 3 streams of the same match? Admin your tournament man. Pick one stream to be your official stream and kick everyone else out.

Agreed. This multiple people covering the same game nonsense is getting quite old and I'm not even a player.
|
If you're going to write a rule like that should also limit the number of streams. But at the same time you entered the tournament knowing the rules. Expecting epic rage post soon because idk how many times I've said it both parties gotta work together here so 1 stream if you're gonna force a stream.

This is assuming that they followed their own rules, of course.
|
I saw Wolf message one of the players that they could refuse streamers as long as someone was casting. I'm sure if Morrow or Kawairice would refuse the two additional casters, that would be fine. Also Wolf have casted the final alone in previously cups, but said he would allow others to stream because he was tired.
|
It seems relatively simple to me. If you don't agree with the way the tournament admins wish to run a tournament don't enter it. Quitting in the middle of it because they don't agree with your demands is idiotic.
|
Wolf only requested one streamer for the HuK game. Kawaii and Morrow have not stated any issue with multiple casters during the finals
|
I might also add that Morrow defended Huk in the Trump chat (if it was the real Morrow).

Goddamn, Wolf Those players give you a really good game and it was so damn close. Saying something like this is a disgrace to your tournament. It was rude, un-called for and interacts with the players that it even makes it unfair. Kawaii stopped producing after you went off there. Very good promotion to your tournament (_not_).

did kawaii rice just sort of afk at the end? just stopped making units..stopped making anything in general with like 4k min/2k gas. lackluster way to follow through with a superior army and ultimately basically threw the game.

Are you sure? I actually got the impression that his macro suddenly slipped but I didn't relate it to the comment. Hm, wonder if it got to his head. That's really unfortunate, it really looked like he just gave up before the game was over.

Completely agree. "tedious tvt" As the tournament organizer I think more maturity is required.
I also do not agree with Huk's DQ...

What did happen precisely ? The stream did lag for me so I missed the end of the fifth set.

You've got to expect TvT finals the way the game is shaping up so far. That comment was out of line.

Completely. Sort of surprised but idk... You can't do that even if you hate TvT. Good way to keep your viewers hooked...

Why would an obs/caster/admin/anything be saying ANYTHING during the game, let alone something as ridiculous as that.

morrow outplayed me all games wolf's comment didn't mean anything to me, it was what everyone was thinking of course im bad, hit supply cap, didnt expect viking count so fast. i didnt have starports ready to deal with it and just expected to win off surprise bcs like an ignorant idiot that cant tvt, so don't blame it on him

I think he was late for a date. still bm though lol

Well, I had less lag during the 3 first sets and they were all but tedious. Fast-paced, quite brutal. Not sure about the fourth. Still, after such a series (I mean, even more after such a series) that's really irresponsible from the tournament admin.

More importantly it was right during Kawaii's push on MorroW's 4th. Important moment in the game, players really focused I'm sure and then something like that comes up ...

You're pushing yourself quite hard here, Kawaii.

Fir of all he said: "Torturous TvT". Second of all Kawaii said at the end: "Sorry for wasting your time wolf".
if you quote, get them straight.

You need to relax man, you played some great games but overall need to lighten up. Throwing in the towel before the game starts is pretty bad for personal moral which leads to poor decision making.

1. i am the very caster that wanted to get into huks game. he did announce that he would forfeit if he was forced to be casted, and so he did. but you really gotta oblige the rules of a tourney you are in, it's easy as that. so i am sorry for huk, i and everyone else would've loved to see him play, but all that came down to his decision. i think he is basically right; the player/caster issues are severe and need to be dealt with somehow, but i think it is kind of sad that most people just follow huk and his opinion blindly. this tourney is based on donations, which won't come in without viewers, and you can't deny that the tourney also has the intention of being entertaining to viewers (no casters - no viewers). it is just rude and disrespectful to the tourney admin and the viewers to enter a competition and just forfeiting and leaving it like that because of rules you knew beforehand. and what really saddens me is that people seem to see huk as a martyr and as someone who is "finally being consequent". whatever the problems and the possible solutions are - in this case it was just plain BM. and i say that as a huk-fanboy and as someone who totally sees the player/caster problem.
2. i think wolf's comment in the last game was just like a *sigh* without any bad intention and i am certain the players knew that. i don't know if kawaiis "afk" had something to do with it but he was tired and certain of his imminent loss anyways. maybe he just didn't want to play anymore. don't be too hard on the guys, we all had a lot of fun

sorry to say, but this tournament was pretty much a joke.
huk takes the DQ in the semifinals because he doesn't want a caster in it...then in the finals a caster makes a completely unnecessary comment in all chat.

Personally I see no issue with HuK being DQ'd. He didn't abide by the rules of the tournament and as a result was kicked out of it. Why would you play in a tournament if you knew the rules stipulated that you would be casted? It shouldn't be a surprise, and I am actually kind of glad you guys didn't cave.
I DO agree that there are some issues with casting/etc - but if the tournament says you are going to be casted, then you can't be upset when it happens.

Or look at from the bright side, that you are clearly not bad when you have terrible macro and still almost win against Morrow.

Well... saying it normally wouldn't be bm... but he basically said it to the players... while they were playing... its disruptive and for a tourney organizer to say it like that is unexpected and pretty offensive... Kawaii didn't take it poorly because he's an extra chill dude...

i think people are overreacting here. the atmosphere was pretty friendly, morrow + kawaii apparently had a lot of fun, wolf is a great guy and yeah, everyone had fun pretty much. everyone knew that wolf was in a hurry before the game, and it was just a kind of friendly banter i think. kawaii already defended wolf a few posts earlier.
you should give this man a break. he certainly didn't mean it in an offensive way at all, and i think he deserves respect for hosting a tourney with such an awesome and community friendly atmosphere every week on his own. and please wish him luck with the girl that has a boyfriend. :D

I think it sounds worse than it was. The players were chatting quite a lot during the games. Obviously a ref should not speak but the atmosphere seemed very friendly.
On a related subject: Morrow is a fucking beast. <3

wolfcup is amazing cup and he is doing a great job, remember this was his first screwup in all tournaments so far, first one (talking about the ingame chat). other tours have alot more screwups than this

Oh geez... I guess this is my first 'scandal' or big 'drama' situation with running these tournaments. Let me address everything now.
On September 13 2010 07:14 Liquid`Tyler wrote: Why are there 3 streams of the same match? Admin your tournament man. Pick one stream to be your official stream and kick everyone else out.
I do this normally, but today I decided to let Trump and drooL cast as well because I know they have a fairly strong following and wanted to allow them the chance to cast this tournament since they have both asked in the past. I felt that I might have to leave soon as well, because I had a meeting arranged that I was becoming late for, and I decided I might let the others cast for me. As it turns out, I cast all of the finals and they weren't needed. I hope they enjoyed being able to cast the last games. I didn't want to leave them or their viewers "hanging".
On September 13 2010 08:21 p4NDemik wrote:Show nested quote +On September 13 2010 08:18 cyprin wrote: wolf if you're going to run a tournament don't bm the players, that was rude as fuck This. Acting like that in the middle of a heated game (TvT or not) is just disgusting.
I cannot disagree. It was unprofessional and wrong of me to do. I did it because the atmosphere was pretty relaxed and the two players were chatting throughout the entire series. KawaiiRice was feeling fairly down because he felt like he had no chance (despite the fact that he's my favourite player, never backs down from anything, and always puts up an amazing fight; one of the best players in the world), and MorroW was trying to reassure him.
The atmosphere was friendly, and I had teased the players earlier saying to make it a best of three so I could go where I had planned to meet someone, but we kept it at best of five. MorroW was joking saying he'd cheese and Kawaii just kept saying "I'm going to lose no matter what". The atmosphere felt so relaxed that when the game kept going back and forth looking like anyone could take it any time, since I was in a bit of a hurry, I said "Torturous TvT" as a joke. MorroW immediately was slightly annoyed by this, and I realised it was something I shouldn't have said. Even as I was casting, I typed it out, deleted it, deciding it was in bad taste, but then said it again a few minutes later. I made the wrong decision, and I apologise for it.
This will never happen again, and I am sorry. I do want to say that I love MorroW and KawaiiRice both and that while both of them disagreed with my unprofessional action, neither of them took offence to it. In addition, I will never again make plans on Sunday that might interfere with my tournaments. That way, my casting and attitude will be in no way affected.

I hope you, adeQuaTe, someone who has made these tournaments possible for weeks and weeks, even purchasing my headset that allows me to cast with good audio quality, decide to reconsider. Remember, not all of the posters here really represent TeamLiquid's values, and I'll really miss your support if you no longer support these tournaments. It's because of people like you that I can have these wonderful community events with high stakes. I thank you for all you have done and, again, hope you reconsider pulling your support.
::
Regarding the HuK situation: I love HuK, he's a great guy, but we disagree on live vs replay casting. That's all there is to it. I respect him for staying firm on his stance about the issue, and he didn't bad manner me or anyone else about it. He just said he would take the disqualification, which is listed in the rules. It's unfortunate that he probably did not read the updated rules, but there are no problems here. Please don't speak badly of him about it here. There's a thread for that discussion.
::
Lastly, thanks for everyone's support of this Wolf Cup. I'm not going to stop having these cups, unless it's impossible for me to find financial support. Next week's cup will take place on the EU server. See you all then!

Correct. Thank god otherwise 99% of pro replays would be so spammy. Pro player never stop chatting in spec chat ! When you have 6 people watching who have a combined average APM of 900 chat gets a little wild sometimes lol!

Nice response from Wolf - and I do agree this is the first time I've ever had anyone show anything that's any sort of an issue with his tourneys. Don't know the guy - but like what I see.

This is probably one of my favorite regular tournament, so here's hoping this weeks drama won't effect future ones. It has good streams, good casting (mostly) and it usually goes off quite smoothly. I also think that having a prize pool that isn't too large makes the play more exciting as the players aren't as afraid of doing things out of the box.

Due to several circumstances, OWC9 (EU) may be pushed back a week. Stay tuned. The post for that should appear soon, but if it does not, expect a weeklong delay, pushing it back to the 26th.
