Yes you read right the World Cup but Starcraft 2 style. This tournament will be run just like the World Cup does. With Groups, rounds of 16, 8, semifinals, and finally of course the finals. One person can represent their country and make it through the cup and win it. Not happy with the result on this year's World Cup, you can play it through as if you were the team!! If two or more different people want to represent a country they must fight for it and the winner will be in the tournament in a whatever group assigned.
This tournament will be run by me, Zero-D. If you want to help I could use some volunteer just pm me or email me at zerfu_7@hotmail.com. Any new commentators out there that would like to commentate games are welcome as well.

Sign up by posting here what country you want to represent, basically any real country goes.
Unfortunately or fortunately this will be for GOLD players and below, I want this tournament to be for the medium to beginner players, so they can have fun as well as to get experience and raise their skill level throughout the tournament. Same goes for those the would like to try their shot at commentating.
If a player has lost twice or any other circumstance where the player will not advance no matter what, he or she will be given a choice to play the last game or step out of it.
So show your country's colors and represent and win the WORLD CUP!!!

I don't know where I read it, ( probably on some other sc fansite ) one problem that people thought of is in the group stages. In the World Cup group stages, a group consists of 4 teams, in this case, 4 sc2 players. There are points awarded for a win (3 pts), draw (1 pt), and none rewarded for a loss. The reason why its 3/1/0 was to create situations where after the first or second game between the teams, scenarios would occur where each team plays out their fate while subsequently depending on the results of the other match within the group. If there was ever a scenario where everything was balanced, there are several statistics taken into account to determine the group ranking order to see who'd would advance. Sadly, there are no draws in sc2 melee, and the statistics such as goal scored, goal difference doesn't exist in sc2.
tl dr : the exact format of the world cup cant be imitated, must improvise at least for group stages (bigger groups, more/less pts for win/loss, round robin..etc etc.)
edit : the 17173.com world cup went around this with tie breakers if there are similar records within the group. although it's a solution, it's far from perfect.

Sounds good, I'll join! Before the beta ended I was a beast mode copper level player, but after the beta ended I started religiously watching Starcraft 2 strategy and commentary videos, so I might of gotten a bit better... Anyhow, I'll represent America if possible. If not I'll just take the Philippines or Germany.

However, I am a diamond player, just not the top tier of players that make it to the top of all other tournaments hosted lol. If you ask me, gold is a little to low, I think saying anyone who doesn't consider themselves "a pro" should be welcome. Most pros have quite recognizable names anyway. The tournament could be somewhat of a "take a bunch of unknowns and the winner will gain some name recognition" type of thing.
Just a suggestion though, carry on if you aren't interested in that type of thing  .

Note: You should clarify if one can only choose from the current WC teams or if you can pick any country. If we have to pick from the current 32 WC teams then I pick Denmark.
Edit: You should have a pool for who get to represent the U.S. I'm assuming that most people will want to represent the US, so having a playoff type of idea is kind of silly. Make sure that everyone writes down a secondary country if they are choosing the US. Then, out of the surely 10-20+ people, pick a name randomly out of the hat. On the otherhand, you could just do FCFS.

Well, technically American is a nationality and not an ethnicity (except for Native Americans), so if most people go with their ethnicity instead then it should be fine~ Hopefully this tournament stays gold and below. Every tournament is pretty much only diamond players. It's really nice knowing that there's a tournament just for lower level players. Oh and I'd like to clarify and say I'll represent Germany.

The biggest problems with gold level and below is the fact that 99% of them play the same.
0 Harass
0 Successful creativity that isn't dependent on the opponent sucking
1 Big Push and gg
~0 Microbility
I am not much different than gold players, in fact once in a while I loose to a few top 10 golds.
However, the point is, when gold players go into tournaments like these, they will most likely be reluctant to do entertaining stuff. They don't even have the basic timings all figured out. Heck never mind gold, even platinums in my league INCLUDING myself can't perform a regular macro only game well. Players like TLO are fun to watch because they already have the basics down and steady. They can then do creative strategies on top of that to bring them ahead of their opponent.
None the less I wish this tournament success, and may I suggest, winner plays WhiteRa just to see what happends? lol :D

But I have to agree with Nick.TNA here, high gold is pretty much the same as low diamond. The real "pro's" are maybe the top 2% of the diamond league.

WRONG! anyway this was ages ago and I was playing "Scrap Station" PvT I killed his cc and a bunch of his workers leaving him with little minerals and no air units, He killed my base but I had placed a pylon to block the island which he was unable to get to. I was at my friends house and had an easy time waiting him out till he finaly left cursing and swearing. FYI I think you should be able to call for a draw vote (If accepted by all players)

It should be hosted on B.net Africa and the observers will have to spam & lag like crazy to recreate the authentic atmosphere of the World Cup.

World cup for gold players and below, makes a lot of sense, with all due respect shouldn't it be called anything other than WORLD CUP? especially if its in the NA server, most countrys have little to no players aside from US / Canada...
anyways I don't think a world cup should be defined amongst the nation's gold players... or have no prize, i think the title is just a bit too ambitious

Last tourney like this that I was in was the GBLF, and 2 of my friends got knocked out by clear plat - diamond players pretending to be crap, even doing 0-5 placements jsut to be in the tourney.

Yeh i really would appreciate if the Diamond level players would stay out of this tournament. Your not doing yourself any favors stomping on people much lower skill level then yourself.

TBH, this is a horrible way at least at this point to prove rank. Considering how many players probably just blew placement games to rank low and grind vs lower ranked players(see 1/3 of D level iccup players).
Or the fact that people may have been screwed by doing placement matches in unstable Bnet times shoving them in a league weaker than themselves.
Or how resets happend every few weeks so this stated factors couldn't be diminished(for lack of a better word).
Or how most of the educated TL members agree that the entire league system has alot of flaws.
Or how players could just make new TL accts to put an image of newbiness when they could be quality players.
My point is that the BNET metal system is not accurate at displaying skill level, yet. Who knows after the game comes out.
I suggest as another player said earlier that you should be able to invite any player who havn't seemed to appear in any US tounaments. I can't imagine the list being very large to have to figure out. This can also give good but unknown players an option of acheving e-fame. Sort of like a minor league.
*prime example would be that after one reset 2 of my placement matches were just given to me. The opponents just purposful lost or just left the game after a few minutes. But i can assure you that that tournaments without strict ways of enforcing and confirming skill level you will encouter smurfs(creating new accts to grind vs weak players). Iccup has a huge problem of this which discourages me of even using Iccup. While you can't have multiple accts with one SC2 key the concept still applies.
I actually think that with a cash prize you will have more Good players fakeing weakness then playing with players your own skill level.
Here is a suggestion. Try doing group stage play. Or double or even triple elimantion rounds. Some system where you will get plently of acutal games in the tournament feel.

Well If Blizzard refuses to implement a system where you set up requirements for our own tournament, then its facepalm.
And if they dont, then If I'm creating a silver and lower tourney for example after the games launch, then I will simply add minimum 100 1v1 games played, im sure noone will fake 100 games to be in tournaments that arent even guaranteed to ever exist

that's exactly why i signed up for this and i'm sure this is why the other gold or lower level players signed up as well. most tourneys have platinum and diamond level players and it just won't be fun for the lower level players to participate in those because we'll just get roflstomped.
for there to be a gold level tourney like this gives us "noobs" a chance to have some fun and compete with each other in a tournament setting.

Frankly without a great tournament feature in Battle.net, tournaments like this will be extremely hard to control.
But as I said, I will defo be checking every single player I play against, and its quite easy to spot the pros from the mediocre players like us.
Build orders are an easy way to spot this, as is match history
Perhaps a couple diamonds will get throught, and hopefully kicked out when the organiser realises that theyre good, however its not about winning, its about enjoying ourselves and getting used to competative pressure, getting better after all

my bet is that if u get placed into plat but go with a 10-32 record he would let you but im not him so dont entirely trust me on this because there are people who throw matches and u might play a couple, there is that chance, but i doubt he will just say you cant compete at all because some other idiots threw there matches and you're doing horrible in plat but for some reason havent been downgraded.

UPDATE
Ok since there has been updates on the beta "may" be going up early registration is hereby closed. The ones registered now will take preference over the other registered players later on when they meet the minimum requirements. Registration will open 1 week after beta starts. Within this week and half everyone that wants to stay on the list and go on the official list with 32 countries will need to make the requirements and me and the judges will me looking thoroughly at all players. After the official list is up prelims will start and maybe group stages if time lets us.

So meeting the minimum requirements means playing at least 42 1v1 ladder games and being placed in the Gold League or below by then to be able to fully register for this tournament?
And just wanted to say, I'd like to change my country to Ivory Coast over Mexico if possible.

Okay beta is now officially up. All registered countries are now sealed, you cannot change anymore.
People need to play their minimum games.
As well as post up your character name and number and or real id email (if you want to), only for those that are registered
Everyone has a WEEK AND A HALF to register late.

I'm sorry I preregistered, and I'm actually close to completing my 42 games required with an around 55% wins but I won't have my new computer in time for the release and so I won't be able to play until I have it and the actual game, which will most likely make me miss the first round matches if I got picked so I'm going to have to drop out, sorry!

I think pausing as a result in loss is retarded. If there is lag of some sort and you can't pause to fix it and just get an auto loss is beyond the most obnoxious rule in a tournament that I've seen.

All the names listed are IGN not TL names, so it is a bit hard to get in contact with your opponent. Luckily my guy is Netherlands for the first match and he is listed just above.

I don't think i can be in this tourney anymore, I got into platinum after my placements and have been winning about 50% of my games and surprisingly, I got promoted to diamond. I'm pretty shocked myself because I never got into platinum once during the 3 weeks I played beta (must've played about 200 games) and now 2 weeks into the game I'm in diamond.

for those that have been promoted its alright since you needed to be gold or lower during phase 2, usually ppl get promoted during the tournament so its fine. Because you should be still around the skill level needed. To get promoted anyways all you have to do is just play and 50% win rate and you get promoted eventually.

Yea, I'd say we continue with what we have. I'm sure the majority of us aren't playing for prizes but for experience in a tournament setting against people of our level. I've never done anything like this before and it was fun to play with added pressure.
