Avalon MSL Quarterfinals Part II

Fans were one match away from Bisu versus Jaedong in the Batoo OSL last season. They were so close they could taste it. Suddenly, disaster struck: Bisu lost to an underdog Terran in the semifinals. This season though, the two best players with the most rabid fans were finally going to clash on StarCraft's biggest stage. Bisu and Jaedong were going to meet in the Avalon MSL Finals. There's nothing standing in their way. Bisu! Jaedong! Avalon MSL Finals! Mark it down. Can't wait. It's basically guaranteed, right?

Well, that's why they play the games.

So close, yet so far from an easy 3-0 PvZ semifinals and epic PvZ finals match. Bisu, Bisu, Bisu. Iris won, it was an "upset," but are fans really surprised? Remember 1-3 Mind GomTV4 MSL, 0-2 Flash Daum OSL, 1-3 Flash Bacchus 08 OSL, 0-3 Fantasy Batoo OSL, and now 2-3 Iris Avalon MSL. Bisu has a history of disappearing in big series against hot Terrans. Even the most stalwart Bisu fans must grudgingly admit this. They pull their hair out in frustration. Why, Bisu why? Why make such stupid in-game PvT decisions? If its any consolation, Bisu really made Iris work for it this time.

Match C: Clear Iris, Full Hearts, Can't Lose
Iris 3-2 Bisu | Live Report Thread

(P)1-Gate Expand < (T)2Fac Shakur @ Byzantium 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Bisu opens one gate expand, and Iris opens 2-fac, disguising it as FD by only showing his first tank. Bisu micros very well with his initial goons and seems to be in a good position, but it all comes crashing down when Iris hits Bisu's natural. Three tanks and six vultures face off against six dragoons. Iris comes out on top with two tanks left over. Bisu's dragoons were a split second late in reacting, allowing Iris to trap them with mines while the tanks and newly rallied vultures finished the job.

(P)Drive-by Proxy DT > (T)2Fac Shakur @ Outsider
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Bisu shows 1-gate range (cancels it) to Iris' scouting SCV, and proxies a citadel, archives, and second gate behind Iris' back natural minerals. Iris opens 2-fac again, and doesn't get mines in time to stop the probe-pushed backdoor DT. Iris attacks, but obviously can't break Bisu without a scanner or turrets. Fast, brutal, efficient win from Bisu, exactly like Game 1 but in reverse.

(P)Aggression < (T)Berserker defense @ Carthage 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Bisu opens 14-nex while Iris opens 1-fac expand, opting for early mines and speed. Iris then techs to dropship as Bisu takes his third. Bisu is completely ready for the drop, losing only four probes. Iris takes his third in the meantime. Bisu is ahead, as the openings favored him and Iris' harass has done virtually no damage so far. Bisu has arbiters already making and a fourth base warped in, and then inexplicably recalls an army into Iris' factories. But Iris hadn't moved out yet, so Bisu's recall gets immediately EMP-wiped, and Iris only loses a few turrets and supply. Bisu then inexplicably hits the front, and Iris' well spread group of tanks enthusiastically hold.

Bisu's fifth is up and running now, but his army is nonexistent. Iris takes his fourth. A mini-recall and vulture raid trade marginal damage, and Bisu fails at another stasis-backed attack. Iris finally unsieges and moves out, and Bisu's EMP'd arbiters and weakened army cannot deal with Iris' push. Bisu made some horrible decisions this game, attacking into several well-fortified Terran armies and recalling way too early.

(P)Aggression > (T)Berserker defense @ Heartbreak Ridge
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Bisu proxies a single gateway halfway to Iris' choke, and due to the threat of offensive gas, forces Iris to gas before rax. Then Bisu blocks Iris wall with a pylon, granting his zealots access into Iris' main. Bisu's first zealot arrives before Iris' rax is even done. The first two zealots trade for one marine and five SCVs, while the third and fourth zealots don't score any kills before being chased away by a vulture. Meanwhile Bisu has gotten a second gate and dragoon, and trades two zealots for four marines before Iris' first tank pops out. Both players expand, Iris behind mines while Bisu continues to pump ranged goons. Bisu tries to minesweep but takes a few hits and backs off.

Bisu goes fast arbiter, getting his stargate and archives as he takes his third. Iris takes his third as well while Bisu takes his fourth. Bisu then masses and attacks, this time dodging EMPs and breaking cleanly through Iris' defense, thanks to a stasis on Iris' vultures. Bisu's zealot harass negated Iris' chances to be aggressive early game, and Bisu was in control for the rest of the way.

(P)AGGRESSION < (T)BERSERKER HARASS @ Byzantium 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [RECAP] +
Bisu opens 2-gate range, proxying a robo in the center of the map. Iris makes a bunker and goes for 1-fac siege expand, but screws up and loses the bunker and suddenly has to face four ranged goons with a single tank. Remarkably, Bisu isn't decisive enough, and gives Iris enough time to pull SCVs and get siege. Iris builds a starport, but his wraith is too late to prevent Bisu's reaver and two zealots from killing all three of his tanks. The wraith takes out the reaver before it can get any more kills, but Bisu attacks Iris front again, almost breaking through before Iris barely holds with a bunker and tank. While Iris' wraith is out scouting, Bisu reverse-elevates his dragoons into Iris' main. Iris again holds, but not after losing several SCVs and buildings.

Bisu has meanwhile expanded twice and in solid control of the game. He reaver drops again, killing a few more SCVs but losing the shuttle to a wraith. Iris counter-drops with a tank and two vultures, but it only gets a few dragoons and probes. Both players take another base, Iris his second natural mineral only and Bisu his fourth (another main). Iris attempts a fantasy-style two DS (tanks) with ground vulture attack, which does excellent probe damage at two of Bisu's bases.

Bisu then hits the front, breaking most of Iris' tanks while keeping his dragoon backbone intact. Iris barely holds and takes his fourth while Bisu takes his fifth. Iris tank drops again, taking out most of the probes at one of Bisu's bases, but Bisu now has arbiter and attacks, wiping out Iris' fourth and all the SCVs at Iris' third. Bisu takes a sixth base, and Iris pushes out with his remaining army toward two of Bisu's bases (4th+5th). The armies meet, and Bisu holds with a nice recall right on top of the tank line.

At this point Iris is on two running bases while Bisu is on four, and Bisu has a larger army. Bisu then executes a ridiculously pimp hallucinated zealot mine-clear, splitting Iris' line and and blowing right into Iris' main. Iris looks very dead, but he has successfully taken out Bisu's probes at his sixth base with a vulture drop. Base count is still heavily in favor of Bisu despite the lost probes.

Bisu's army is much, much larger. I would estimate almost twice the supply, and concentrated in zealots and archons. Iris does a vulture/tank+DS drop on Bisu's two remaining mining bases, and ridiculously, Bisu decides to attack instead of defend, and losing every single mining probe at those two bases. Bisu's attack is again spearheaded by hallucinations, but only kills a CC that was already at a mined out base. The attack gets to Iris' main factories, but stalls out. Bisu lost his army advantage, but storm raided Iris' remaining base, so both players are now no longer mining.

Iris transfers his remaining SCVs and resumes mining, while Bisu continues to lose probes to several vulture drops. Finally, Iris moves out, crushing what was left of Bisu's units with EMP and a tank-heavy army. Bisu GG's out, and Iris wins a ridiculous comeback game. Bisu could have and probably should have won this game at several points with smarter decision making, but credit to Iris for never giving up, holding several large attacks, and continuing to harass Bisu's economy despite losing base after base.

(T)Iris advances to face (Z)Kwanro in the Avalon MSL Semifinals.

Wow. That last game was an action packed, 35-minute thriller. The winner wasn't decided until the final minute, and Iris came back from a huge deficit to win. It really shows how overaggression can really cost a Protoss player. Bisu threw huge army after huge army at Iris while ignoring Iris' small harass attacks that eventually added up to huge damage. The sheer number of probes Bisu lost in this game was staggering, and had he played more conservatively, he almost certainly would have won. But on the flip side, Bisu would have never gotten such a huge lead if he wasn't so aggressive with his reavers and goons early game. This has to be a bitter pill to swallow for Bisu fans, as they watch their hero fall yet again to a Terran deep in a tournament. The loss is even worse because Bisu was up so much in the final decisive game.

Iris is a player that came tantalizingly close to an OSL title -- up 2-0 and pushing GGPlay's natural -- only to lose 2-3. Iris is tenacious, aggressive, and entertaining. But that's not why fans love him. Iris is old school to his core, from the way he acts to the builds he uses. He's like an undecorated, lesser skilled Nada -- all the consistency and resilience without any of the titles. If anyone "deserves" a title (and I use deserve loosely, as I don't believe anyone truly deserves a title until they win it), Iris does. Even if I wasn't the biggest CJ fanboy in the world, I will be pulling for this guy with all my heart. Now, he's two matches away from erasing that bitter Daul OSL memory. You can't help but hope he can pull it out.

In the semifinals Iris will be the favorite against his CJ teammate Kwanro. They may have lost in Proleague Playoffs, but CJ has been very successful in the MSL (and GOM as well).

Match D: Kwanrolled
Kwanro 3-0 Zero | Live Report Thread

(Z)Living drones > (Z)Dead drones @ Heartbreak Ridge
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Both players open 12-pool gas, adding a second hatch at their naturals. Zero opts for earlier speed, and his first few speedlings arrive and take some health off Kwanro's hatch, but get chased off by defending lings. There's a zergling fight at Zero's natural, and it comes out very even. Kwanro rallies more lings but Zero defends again. Both players mass mutas off two gas. Kwanro seems to have a bigger flock, but Zero equalizes nicely with excellent scourge control. Unfortunately, Zero lost most of his drones to Kwanro's lings as the muta fight was going on.

Zero then decisively wins a second muta fight at Kwanro's main, but loses all his remaining drones to a backstab from Kwanro's lings. Kwanro desperately tries to put up spores while Zero's mutas are distracted by scourges. Two spores complete at Kwanro's natural, and Zero can't harass anymore, having only three mutas and no drones left. Very close and exciting end game, but it felt very like Kwanro should have never let it get to that point.

(Z)Good ling micro > (Z)Bad ling micro @ Carthage 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Zero opens 9-pool while Kwanro opens 12-pool, and Kwanro successfully defends his natural hatch with drones and lings. Zero micros badly, not only scoring nearly no kills, but losing several lings unnecessarily. At this point Kwanro gets a hand cramp and curses out loud while the camera is on him, but he still is able to run into Zero's main with his larger ling force. Kwanro snipes several drones while they drill around a sunken. Zero gets his spire up, but he has lost far too many workers, and his mutas cannot do much damage due to Kwanro's spores. Zero manages a final mutaling attack that is somewhat successful, but loses all his drones to a Kwanro muta backstab. Again we are left in a situation where Zero has more air units but no surviving workers, and Kwanro eventually masses enough mutas to win.

(Z)Average 9-pool > (Z)Horrible 9-pool @ Outsider
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Both players open 9-pool gas, and the ling fight happens in Kwanro's main, where Zero tries to split his zergling group to harass Kwanro's drones. Unfortunately, Zero is horrible at zergling micro and not only fails to kill any drones but loses all of his zerglings. Absurdly, Kwanro has 8+ lings left over, and this forces a sunken from Zero. When both players ecos are equally hungry from 9-pool openings, an extra sunken is ridiculously expensive -- 50 + 75 + 50 + lost mining time. Right before Zero's mutas hatch, Kwanro kills all of Zeros lings and scores a few drone kills. Zero has six drones while Kwanro has ten. This forces Zero to make more scourges, which predictably get sniped easily by Kwanro's larger muta flock. Kwanro kills a few overlords and expands, putting himself even further ahead, and when the muta fight finally happens, Zero loses badly.

(Z)Kwanro advances to face (T)Iris in the Avalon MSL Semifinals.

This series was as one-sided as the Bisu-Iris series was evenly matched. Zero played horribly. Kwanro is no ZvZ bonjwa, so Zero had his share of chances in this series, but Kwanro won so decisively you'd think Jaedong Hyuk was playing. Even more embarrassing, in the final game, the camera cut to Zero's FPView just as he was typing out. The FPV was just idling at the lower left of the map, while Zero had his head in his hands. This loss makes Zero 0-5 in two ZvZ quarterfinals, bouncing him out of both the OSL and MSL. At times, Zero has Jaedong level ZvP and ZvT... but B-team ZvZ. At least he'll know what he needs to practice.

Kwanro is in the semifinals. Even though this is a huge step for him and very exciting for CJ fans, I can't help but feel he partially lucked his way through. His Ro32 Group was weak, his Ro16 opponent Flash was slumping horribly TvZ, and his Ro8 opponent was the ZvZ anti-bonjwa. In the semis, he'll be a true underdog against teammate who sees his style every day. Iris easily beat Effort, who is clearly a level above Kwanro in the CJ Zerg hierarchy. Everyone expects Iris to take this Bo5 easily, but weirder things have happened in inter-team matches. Could you imagine how one-sided a Kwanro vs Jaedong ZvZ MSL Finals would be? Or even worse, how boring a Calm-Kwanro finals would be? Would anyone go to that match? Would anyone even care? Iris, you need to win.

MSL Semifinal A Preview
(Z)Jaedong vs (Z)Calm
+ Show Spoiler [Statistics] +
Player / Matchup / Last 10 / Last 3 Months / Head-to-Head
(Z)Jaedong / ZvZ / 5-5 / 10-6 / 1-0
(Z)Calm / ZvZ / 8-2 / 8-2 / 0-1

Jaedong's ZvZ looks far from invincible these days. Two recent losses to Orion and Hyuk have fans scratching their heads. Calm is the exact opposite, looking very mediocre and then suddenly going on a ZvZ tear. But do not let these statistics fool you. Before this 8-2 streak, Calm was 2-6 against bad competition while Jaedong was a ridiculous 17-1. Jaedong is still the favorite in this series, and who wins or loses this Bo5 will be almost entirely dependent on his mental state. Can the best player in the world bounce back from a nightmarish Proleague Finals, where he went 0-3 and cost his team the win? Do we dare start throwing out the S-word? Is it even possible for someone who is in two major semifinals to slump?

We haven't had a player in two simultaneous finals since Savior in early 2007. Jaedong is this close to being in THREE finals, including Proleague. However, I don't think he'll get there. The real obstacle will be this Friday, when Boxer's heir will be ready and waiting. I believe Jaedong will lose decisively to Fantasy -- it won't even get to a fifth game. Back-to-back semifinals on consecutive days and in different matchups is just so, so difficult. This OSL belongs to Fantasy. But the MSL semifinal is a different story. On the surface, Calm seems to be in a great situation. I could copy the text from the preview of his series against Effort -- Calm has all the time in the world while his opponent is burdened with several practice commitments. Calm also has no pressure -- he's the underdog and he can play loose and free.

But you don't forget how to ZvZ overnight. Losses to bad Zergs don't erase raw ZvZ ability. Jaedong will be angry, and his hands will still be fast. He won't be his old self, and he won't beat Fantasy, but he'll find a way against Calm. Cheer up Jaedong fans. Proleague wasn't meant to be, and repeat OSLs simply don't happen. One individual final is enough -- you can't have it all.

Jaedong, 3-1 Calm. 24 hours later, Jaedong, 1-3 Fantasy.

GOD D@MM!T BISU!

I really really really hope Jaedong wins or this is going to be one boring MSL. I don't even want to think about it and I also doubt that JD will win versus Fantasy so I would be very heartbroken if JD didn't get to take a tittle considering statistic wise he is the most dominant player right now.

Really disappointed in Bisu thou. It seems there is not a single Protoss with the flare of JD or Fantasy. P players are in dire need of innovation.

Go Iris!

Thanks for the coverage --- I agree that Fantasy > Jaedong and Jaedong > Calm is the most likely outcome, with Fantasy > OSL and Jaedong > MSL.

Yea I couldn't believe it when Bisu lost. I can't think of a player with better PvT right now (Best is not up to his old self, and his style is boring compared to Bisu's imo; Stork and JangBi have not had a great PvT match in months it seems). Yet he loses like this -_-;

Major major props to Iris, he played stupid-good. Seriously, how do you come back to win Game 5? I was so ready for a GG at points I was almost giddy. Fuck.
Peace~

I'd rather see Jaedong win the OSL, but this is a bit like saying I'd rather have a new car than a kick in the head.

And zero...oh zero...

my bet?

1. jaedong beats calm, but loses to fantasy.
OR
2. jaedong beats fantasy, but loses to calm.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Jaedongs not gonna practice against calm, and that if he loses the first match, he will lose the next 2 just so he can get back to practicing TyrantVTerrorist. And sweet jesus I hope Iris gos on to the finals, because he is on fire right now.

The amount of bias against JD in this was just way too much, going to pass on finishing it.

Oh no the person writing my SC news has an opinion and tries to spice up the article by pointing out the 0-3 shortcomings of Jaedong in SPL finals, I will now turn off my monitor and cry.

BUT WAIT

Maybe if I make a post expressing my discontent, everything will be right for next time, when writers can just post the basic information of the game and not have a personality at all!
